I highly recommend this onsen hotel! The environment, service, and food are all excellent. They have two outdoor private onsens and two indoor private onsens, all free of charge. The public outdoor onsen is also very large, and some rooms even come with their own onsen baths. After your bath, you can enjoy complimentary milk and cold drinks, and in the morning, Yakult. There's a sake happy hour in the evening, and free ramen for a late-night snack! I've stayed at over 20 onsen hotels, and this is the first time I've seen such generosity, haha. The hotel pays great attention to every detail, which is fantastic. For dinner, we chose the Hida beef kaiseki meal, which was also quite good. They offer a free shuttle service. I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit!

This hotel is 10-15’ walking from Takayama train and bus station. It was a great base to enjoy the day market as relaxed atmosphere of the city easily. The room is comfortable but it shows that the hotel was built some decades ago. There are two onsen, great for experiencing such a relaxing activity. Really liked the one that has plants and rocks in the outside. There is also a small pond with koi where you can walk and chill by. Staff was helpful but I think that the hotel was a bit too crowded with packs of mature tourists which were a bit noisy and excited. n

November 25, 2025 This was the most expensive and luxurious hotel I've ever stayed at. I was assigned to a 'Jing Suite' in the 'Kou Chu Jing' series. Although these suites aren't as newly renovated as the 'Heki Suites,' they come with a jacuzzi! I didn't even bother with the hotel's onsen because of it. My first jacuzzi experience was absolutely amazing. You pull down the blinds, lie back, and watch the small TV in the opposite bathroom, while powerful jets massage your feet. The toiletries were all Sekkisei or POLA (for use in the hotel only, not to be taken). All the drinks in the mini-fridge were complimentary and could be taken with you. Plus, there was a capsule coffee machine in the room with four free capsule coffee flavors. The view from the living room was fantastic. The toilet and bathroom were two separate rooms; the bathroom was closer to the bedroom, while the toilet was next to the living room outside. It had a motion-sensing light, so if you sat there for too long, you'd have to move or the light would turn off by itself 🤣. I called the hotel three days in advance to pay for an upgrade to the highest-tier 'All Hida Beef Dinner.' All the ingredients were Hida beef, and the menu even listed the cow's name and origin. You could also order à la carte from the hotel's partner sushi restaurant; I added sashimi and vinegar crab, and I was absolutely stuffed. Since I contacted them in advance, they provided a complimentary shuttle service to and from Takayama Station. Upon arrival at 12:30 PM, it was a mini-bus, and the driver (a kind older gentleman) was easy to spot, holding a whiteboard with my name written on it. For departure at around 2:00 PM, it was a fancy black sedan, which looked super luxurious. The Nepalese staff member, dressed in a kimono, escorted me to the room and explained everything in detail. The restaurant also had private rooms. For breakfast, you could choose between Japanese or Western. After much deliberation, I opted for the safe and popular Western breakfast because some of the ingredients in the Japanese breakfast were a bit too healthy and exotic for my taste. The most memorable item was the hotel's dashi-rolled omelet, which was incredibly delicious. Milk, orange juice, and tea were all free and unlimited during breakfast. It truly showed that you get what you pay for!

Nice and traditional hotel. Good location and close to the old towns. We explored the Takayama old town in the morning ( incl. morning market ) and night times. We also enjoyed the great food and onsen there. The hotel staffs provided good hospitality in all areas. They really gave us a lots of good services and helps during our stays.

Wow my friend and I told ourselves that this was gonna be a little treat for us when we booked, knowing how steep the price was. But it was way more enjoyable than I had expected! We had not planned how to travel back from the hotel to Nagoya, so we just asked the front desk when we arrived. And the staff was so kind to share with us the timetable and modes of transportation available. (I conversed with her in Japanese). We went late at night for the onsen, around 11pm, and basically had to whole place to ourselves! There are 2 indoor pools and 3 outdoor pools, and the outdoor pools are must-tries!! Whole body was so relaxed after soaking in the onsen, and it relieved our weariness and sore from hiking. Buffet dinner and breakfast were awesome too! My friend is vegetarian and initially she worried that she might not have much options, but her worry was uncalled for, as they had a wide variety of food, all super delicious. We also loved the view from our room and also from the lobby… perfect onsen hotel experience for us.

This hotel is very close to Takayama Station, though you do have to cross a skybridge to get there. The rooms are clean and tidy, and they're cleaned daily. If you don't need daily cleaning, the front desk will give you a complimentary bottle of water. They have public baths, hot springs, and free massage chairs. For breakfast, each person gets a Hida beef dish, and while the variety isn't huge, there's definitely enough to fill you up. The only downside is that the staff's English isn't great, so you'll need to use a translation app. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel.

A perfect ryokan stay! Takayama Ouan is just 5 minutes from JR Station. The no-shoes policy with tatami throughout creates an authentic feel. The highlight is the stunning 13th-floor rooftop open-air onsen with city views, plus three free private baths – great for tattoos. After soaking, enjoy free ice cream and Yakult. Evening complimentary ramen at 9:30 PM is a nice bonus. Breakfast buffet with Hida beef is exceptional. Excellent value and highly recommended!

The biggest advantage of this hotel is its incredibly convenient location, practically a 2-minute walk from the JR station. It's especially ideal for anyone needing to use JR trains. From the room, you can directly see the station and trains, which is a real treat for train enthusiasts. The hotel provides washing machines and dryers; you can even leave the washing machine running while you're out. However, a full wash and dry cycle takes quite a while, about three hours, so it's best to plan accordingly. The in-room amenities are also impressive, with a ReFa showerhead and hairdryer, offering a pleasant experience. The hotel offers free luggage storage, which is convenient both before check-in and after check-out. For shared facilities, there's a public bath on the 2nd floor, and a free foot bath on the top floor. There are also private hot spring rooms available for 2750 yen for 45 minutes if you prefer a quieter bathing experience. One thing to note is that the room windows have a screen-style design, so remember to draw the inner curtains at night, otherwise, it can get quite bright in the morning. Overall, this hotel's location, facilities, and attention to detail make it very suitable for short trips, especially for those who enjoy taking JR trains or have an interest in them.

Super conveniently located just next to Takayama Station and right beside the Nohi Bus Terminal, making it an excellent base for getting around especially by public transport to Shirakawa go or Toyama or Nagoya. Unlike many hotels in Japan with compact room sizes, this hotel offers a more spacious setup, complete with a kitchen, cooking utensils, and even a washer-dryer — perfect for longer stays or added comfort. It is also within easy walking distance to Miyagawa Morning Market and Takayama Old Town, with plenty of Hida beef restaurants nearby for a great local dining experience.

This is the best value hotel I've ever stayed at. It's less than a 10-minute walk from the JR station – just turn right, walk straight, cross the street at the traffic light, and keep going straight. The front desk staff were incredibly warm and polite; check-in was super quick. They even bowed at the elevator until the doors closed. The room was a bit more spacious than typical single rooms and well-equipped. There was a wardrobe and pajamas, which you could use for hot springs. The room was very clean, and toiletries like toothbrushes could be picked up in the lobby, where you could also choose your preferred pillow. The room had a humidifier, but make sure to read the instructions on the wall before using it. The room was actually warm enough even without the heater on; I turned it on the first night and woke up feeling too hot, so I didn't use it on subsequent nights. Breakfast was surprisingly varied and delicious. When I checked out in the morning, the staff who helped store my luggage were also polite and enthusiastic. Throughout my stay, staff members greeted me kindly every time I entered or left the lobby. Plus, it's very close to Takayama Jinya Morning Market and the Old Town, and only about a 30-minute walk to Hida Folk Village. If you're visiting in winter, I highly recommend this place – Shirakawa-go (Gassho-zukuri village) in the snow is absolutely beautiful. All in all, this is the most cost-effective hotel I've ever experienced.

The location is fantastic, very close to the old town and with a convenience store right next door. Both the room and the lounge are super stylish and clean. It was great to relax on a tatami mat after a long time. However, I could faintly hear snoring from the next room, which made me wonder if my own noises were audible, and I felt a bit less relaxed. When I went to the lounge during operating hours, it was quite noisy, possibly due to many international guests, so I ended up just going back to my room.

The hotel staff is warm and thoughtful, the breakfast is rich and delicious, and you can soak in hot springs. It is my first time staying in a Japanese hotel. I feel novel and the experience is very good. I will choose to stay here again when I come to Takayama

The hotel is very close to JR Takayama Station. After exiting the station, you don't need to cross the road; just turn right towards Tokyu Stay, and you'll find it after passing Ajikura Tengoku. The hotel's decor is very unique. We booked a corner triple room, so the space was incredibly spacious and comfortable. Besides drip coffee and tea bags, the room also provided bottled mineral water. There's an open-air bath on the 9th floor – simply flawless. Before my trip, I read many reviews recommending Hida beef, but to my dismay, I discovered Ajikura Tengoku was closed when I arrived (ugh!). Luckily, I quickly found Maruaki, a famous Hida beef restaurant open year-round. The beef was incredibly rich and fatty – you'll definitely fall in love with Hida beef! I'm already planning to come back next year! 😋

Hida Takayama Washington Hotel Plaza

This was my second stay at the Washington Hotel in Takayama, and I'll start with the pros. It's incredibly convenient, located directly across from Takayama Station and the Nohi Bus Center. From the platform, it's less than a 50-meter walk to the hotel lobby, which is super handy. For travelers catching early buses to Shirakawa-go, Kamikochi, or Furukawa (especially recommended during cherry blossom season), this location is a huge advantage. All the nearby attractions are within walking distance, and the drugstore, restaurants, and specialty shops next to the hotel are among the last to close in Takayama. This is a big deal because many restaurants and shops in Takayama are quite particular, operating only four or five hours (or even just two or three) a day and often closing three or four days a week. Some restaurants even stop taking customers by 6 or 7 PM. We joked that at night, Takayama is full of 'hungry ghosts' wandering around! The hotel's toothbrushes are still the 'old style' and are much better than those in many other hotels. The triple room layout was well-designed and felt spacious when organized properly. The shower had good pressure and was very comfortable. What needs improvement is the shower curtain – it's too thin, so the strong shower spray easily splashes outside the tub. The breakfast is only a Japanese set meal. I tried it one day, and the taste was just so-so. I skipped it the second day, and it was still the same on the third, so I decided not to eat it again. The breakfast options are too limited; it looks good but doesn't taste great. Other hotel services were still good. The triple room had two trash cans, which shows thoughtful attention to detail. The overall bathroom facilities felt a bit old, and the extractor fan wasn't very powerful... Oh, and the hotel offers a hot spring ♨️ with pretty long opening hours, but I didn't get to try it, so I can't comment. All in all, for this price, being able to stay in such an extremely convenient, central location near the station (and commercial center) is definitely worth it. On a side note, I'm not sure if it's due to an economic downturn or the off-season, but Shirakawa-go and Takayama were noticeably less fun, less interesting to explore, and had fewer good shopping and dining options than my previous two visits. 'Travel early!' is truly not an empty phrase.
