If you’re looking for a quick tropical escape in Malaysia, Redang Island is definitely one place I’d recommend. The first thing you’ll notice is the water, clear enough to spot colorful fish swimming around, with soft white sand and that postcard-like turquoise sea. 🌊🐠
What I love about Redang is that you don’t need to plan a super packed itinerary. You can spend the morning snorkeling, chill by the beach in the afternoon, then catch the sunset with a cold drink in hand. 🍹🌅 It’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down and enjoy the moment. And if you’re into marine life, Redang is even better. The island is known for its beautiful coral reefs, colourful tropical fish and chances to spot sea turtles, making it a popular choice for snorkeling and diving.

📅 Best Time to Visit Redang Island
If you ask me when’s the best time to visit Redang Island, I’d say: go during the dry season, when the sea is calm and the weather is more suitable for island activities. ☀️🏝️
Redang is generally best visited from around March to October, when you’ll have better chances of sunny days, clearer waters and good conditions for snorkeling and diving. This is also when most resorts and boat services operate normally. From around November to February, the northeast monsoon brings heavier rain and rougher seas to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. 🌧️Many resorts may close during this period, and ferry services can also be affected, so it’s not the most ideal time for a Redang getaway.

For me, the biggest reason to visit Redang is the SEA. 🐠 If you’re planning to spend most of your trip snorkeling or diving, April to August is a good period to consider, as the weather and sea conditions are generally more favorable.

🐠 Things to Do on Redang Island
🤿 1. Go Snorkeling
This is probably the must-do activity in Redang. 🐠🌊 The water around the island is clear, and you can spot plenty of colorful fish, coral reefs and, if you’re lucky, even sea turtles. You can join a snorkeling trip arranged by your resort or head to some of the popular snorkeling spots around the island. Even if you’re not a strong swimmer, don’t worry too much! Many tours provide life jackets and basic snorkeling equipment.

If you’ve seen photos of Redang before, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Long Beach. 🏝️ Also known as Pasir Panjang, this is one of the island’s most popular beaches, with soft white sand and clear turquoise water. It’s a great place to swim, relax, take photos and simply enjoy the island atmosphere. The beach can get lively, especially during peak periods, but that’s also part of its charm. If you like having restaurants, resorts and activities nearby, Long Beach is a convenient choice.

For anyone who loves snorkeling, Redang Marine Park is one spot you shouldn’t miss. 🤿🐠 The surrounding waters are home to colorful fish, coral reefs and other marine life. It’s a popular stop on snorkeling tours, so you’ll usually find plenty of visitors coming here to explore the underwater world.
Remember to follow the marine park rules: don’t touch the coral, don’t feed the fish and keep your distance from marine animals. The underwater scenery is beautiful enough without us disturbing it.

Want to see sea turtles? 🐢 Then keep an eye out for Turtle Bay on your snorkeling itinerary. The area is known for turtle sightings, although of course, there’s never a 100% guarantee that you’ll see one. If you’re lucky enough to spot a turtle swimming nearby, just enjoy the moment from a respectful distance.

The hotel having a lounge at Terengganu Airport is a huge plus! Upon arrival, the lounge staff were incredibly helpful and quickly arranged our transfer to the jetty. Once we reached the island and checked in, everything was meticulously organized, with staff collaborating efficiently to manage all our bookings. Saiful, the restaurant manager, thoughtfully added me on WeChat to arrange our themed dinner, which was a very nice touch – thumbs up! Our customer relations manager, Hamdan, followed up throughout our stay, assisting with activity arrangements, answering all our questions, and checking in daily to see how we were doing, making us feel right at home – another thumbs up! Finally, I have to mention the fantastic location of The Taaras! The private beach view from our cliff suite was absolutely stunning! The room was spacious and well-laid out; our whole family loved it! With all the facilities at the hotel, there's no chance of getting bored. A tip for future visitors: the hotel has its own private airstrip on the island. The hotel is located in the northern part of the island village, close to the beach. The public beach is about a 20-minute walk along a forested path suitable for cars and motorcycles. There are only two public piers on the island. One is located in the south, where islanders travel. You need to disembark from this pier to reach the hotel. The hotel provides a shuttle for 10 renminbi per person. The other pier is located in the east, where there are more hotels, a more beautiful beach, and complete facilities. It's also popular with tourists, so it's best to book a hotel there, such as Laguna, but it's difficult to book well in advance. Dribam is like a Chinese farmhouse, with rooms built on stilts on the hillside, made of wood and concrete. The surrounding ecology is pleasant, with small animals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the open-air restaurant. Beware of monkeys when dining; they stole our bread during breakfast.DariRM180

There isn't any choice of food. Only the coffeehouse limited food.
If wants to go to Long Beach for more choice of food will cost Rm50/per head boat.

We had an unexpectedly beautiful 4D3N stay at Redang Divers Resort. Initially hesitant due to the 3.2 rating, we booked as it was the only available option, but it turned out to be the best decision.From the warm yet respectful service by Wei to meeting the humble owners Adrian and his wife, everything felt genuine and comfortable. The food was outstanding (we truly miss the food!) honestly among the best we had in Redang.The beachfront view was amazing, white sand and turquoise sea right in front of our room. Simple, raw island vibes, clean rooms, and a truly heartfelt experience for our family.
A small note: the toilet flooring could use an upgrade, but we understand refurbishment is already underway with the new management.Not a “luxury” resort, but definitely 5-star in heart, service, and overall experience.We’ll definitely be back. Thank you for making us feel at home!DariRM363

There are many hotels on Redang Island on the same beach as this one. Honestly, I haven't been to Laguna, so I don't know what it's like. Excluding the most expensive Taras, the rooms in this hotel are probably better than the others overall, though its price is a bit high. The room is very large, accommodating 4-5 people, making it a top choice for family trips. The beach in front of the hotel is also relatively clean, with finer sand. The hotel's sales team is also very good and meticulously helps guests. However, the hotel's room service was quite unsatisfactory. Firstly, there were ants in the room. I reported it to the hotel for treatment, but nothing was done, leading to adults and children being bitten by ants. Later, they gave me a bottle of insecticide to deal with it myself, which I was very unhappy about. Ctrip helped coordinate multiple times, hoping for compensation, but to no avail. At check-out, due to personal reasons, I carelessly left my passport in the hotel safe. I urgently contacted the hotel but received no response. It was Ctrip that helped me contact the hotel. However, due to ferry schedule issues, I had to arrange a boat myself to retrieve my passport before my last flight. The hotel breakfast is very mediocre, with limited variety. Apart from these issues, Redang Island is definitely worth a visit. You can see sea turtles, Nemo, and many beautiful coral fish. The beach is very comfortable. The most delightful part was seeing tractors, which most city kids haven't seen, being used by these hotels to transport guests – it's quite charming. If you have enough time, you can stay a few extra days to fully experience it. Remember to book the Chinese restaurant on the island in advance; it opens at 6:30 PM every day.DariRM725

This hotel is a great value for the price. First, they offer a holiday package that includes boat transfer, food, and daily activities—I really liked it. Second, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful; they accompany you and try to make your holiday great.
One thing that could be improved is the cleaning quality. The cleaning is superficial—the walls in the bathroom are very dirty, the mirror is dirty, etc. The cleaning personnel does not pay attention to details. Also the safe and TV did not work.
I would also warn families with kids, as this hotel might not be the best choice for you. Snorkeling activities are not suitable for small children, the food selection is very limited (so kids may not find something to eat), and there are no facilities for entertaining children at the hotel. Finally, the tap water quality is poor, so I would be worried about my child showering there.

🚤 How to Get to Redang Island
For most travelers from Kuala Lumpur, the usual route is: Kuala Lumpur → Kuala Terengganu → Jetty → Redang Island 🏝️
✈️ 1. Fly to Kuala Terengganu
The easiest option, especially if you’re travelling from Kuala Lumpur, is to take a flight to Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) in Kuala Terengganu. The flight itself is relatively short, so this is a good choice if you don’t want to spend too much time on the road. Once you arrive, you’ll need to continue to one of the jetties for your boat transfer to Redang.

Most visitors get to Redang via Merang Jetty, although the exact departure point depends on your resort or ferry package. From Kuala Terengganu Airport, you can arrange a taxi, private transfer or other transport to the jetty. 🚗

This is also when the holiday starts to feel real. Once you’re out on the water with the sea breeze and blue ocean around you, you’ll probably be reaching for your phone to take photos. 📸
🚌 Can I Travel to Redang by Bus?
Yes! If you’re travelling on a tighter budget, taking a long-distance bus from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu is another option.
It takes considerably longer than flying, but it can be more affordable. From Kuala Terengganu, you’ll still need to arrange transport to the jetty before taking the boat to Redang.
