  • January is the cheapest month to fly, while February is the priciest, because Chinese New Year lands on 6 February 2027.

Three details catch Malaysians out. Humidity drops to about 30%, so lips crack before fingers feel cold. Wind on an open stretch of the Great Wall knocks 5°C off the reading. District heating, which runs from 15 November to 15 March, keeps rooms and malls at 20 to 24°C, so you will peel layers on and off all day. Our Beijing weather guide has the month-by-month picture.

Does it snow in Beijing?

Rarely. Any winter day carries roughly a 1% chance of precipitation. December delivers about 5cm across two days, January is drier, and the annual maximum snow depth averages 7.5cm against a record of 33.5cm.

When snow falls, three spots repay the effort. The Forbidden City turns red walls and yellow roofs into something else entirely. Jingshan Park, just north of it, gives the postcard view over those roofs. The Summer Palace is quieter, with its 728m Long Corridor framing a frozen Kunming Lake and hawkers selling roasted chestnuts outside. Tickets cost ¥40 from 1 November to 31 March, appear at 8pm Beijing time exactly seven days ahead, and the palace closes every Monday, so plan the week around it. No ticket window exists on site, so read our step-by-step ticket guide first.

Christmas lights and new year countdowns

Christmas is a working day in China, and the decorations ignore that completely. Malls switch their lights on in late November, and hotels sell Christmas Eve dinners weeks ahead. Universal Beijing Resort puts on the biggest show, with a 22m tree, fake snow every evening and a Hogwarts castle light show from 5:30pm. Sanlitun Taikoo Li hosts a mulled wine market, and The Place builds a four-storey tree above an indoor rink. Catholic cathedrals such as Xishiku and St Joseph's at Wangfujing hold Christmas Eve services that fill early. Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027, the Year of the Fire Goat, and the national holiday runs from 5 to 11 February. Book everything before that.

Winter-only things to do

Frozen lakes are the headline act. Beihai Park opens a 15,000 sqm rink on Lotus Lake beside the south gate, usually from late December to early February, with wooden sleds and ice bicycles for hire. Kunming Lake at the Summer Palace opens Beijing's largest rink in early January. Shichahai pairs its rink with a market selling dumplings and candied hawthorn. Two family carnivals, at the Olympic Forest Park and Longtan Park, run from late December to late February.

Ice lanterns are the other winter exclusive. The Longqing Gorge festival opens around 15 January and runs into early March, lit from 10am to 10pm with last entry at 9:30pm. Tickets were ¥140 for the ice lanterns, ¥80 for the glacier canyon and ¥220 combined. Yanqing runs 5 to 10°C colder than the city, so the ice lantern festival is where hand warmers and a power bank earn their place. High-speed rail from Beijing North to Yanqing takes 30 minutes, then bus Y43. For the Great Wall, pick Mutianyu over Badaling. Fewer tour buses, better ramparts, and a cable car that saves your legs on icy steps.

What to wear in Beijing in winter

Three layers, and the base matters most. Start with thermal merino or synthetic long johns, never cotton, because damp cotton pulls heat straight out of you, and wet cotton at -8°C is how a good day turns bad. Add a fleece or wool sweater, then a down jacket with a windproof shell, and thermal leggings under jeans. Small things decide the day. A beanie over your ears, touchscreen gloves, a scarf you can pull over your nose, thick socks and boots with deep tread. Bring a power bank, because phone batteries die fast outdoors, and sunglasses for the glare off frozen lakes. Pack lip balm, hand cream and moisturiser for the indoor half of the trip. Hotel heating dries skin out by day three. Children need one extra layer than you, and strollers are miserable on ice. Forgot something? Uniqlo and Decathlon both keep city-centre stores, and Alipay or WeChat Pay handles the payment.

Flying from Malaysia in winter

Three airlines fly nonstop from Kuala Lumpur, and all of them land before breakfast. Malaysia Airlines takes off at 11:40pm and lands at Daxing (PKX) at 6am after 6h20m. AirAsia X leaves at 6:45pm and reaches PKX just after 1am. Air China's 12:15am service, the only one into Capital (PEK), lands at 6:45am. The two cities sit 4,351km apart. Trip.com's route page lists 47 fare options across 11 carriers, most of them one-stop, and its data logs about seven departures a day. The cheapest nonstop one-way fare was MYR 547 with AirAsia X in early December, while journeys with one stop in Manila or Hong Kong started at MYR 914. Monthly averages make the timing clear: November MYR 652, December MYR 718, January MYR 575, February MYR 1,059. AirAsia X includes one cabin bag, so bundle checked luggage when you book rather than at the airport. Malaysia Airlines includes 32kg. From Daxing, the express train reaches Caoqiao in 19 minutes, and the Capital Airport Express costs ¥25. The Beijing metro takes foreign cards tap-and-go. Land on that 6am red-eye and it will be about -5°C outside, so keep your jacket in the cabin bag. Compare live fares from Kuala Lumpur and Beijing hotels before you lock dates.

Malaysians enter visa-free for 30 days, so a winter trip slots into a longer China route. Our Beijing guide for Malaysians covers money, transport and arrival, with separate guides for families, Muslim travellers and nights out.
