Hangzhou, often called “Heaven on Earth,” is located in eastern China’s Zhejiang province, just an hour by train from Shanghai. The city is famous for its stunning West Lake, lush tea plantations, and centuries-old temples, all of which change dramatically with the seasons.

Hangzhou has a humid subtropical climate, meaning hot, humid summers and cool, damp winters, with pleasant spring and autumn transitions. Summers can be scorching, reaching 35°C (95°F), while winters rarely dip below 2°C (36°F). Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, thanks to mild temperatures and breathtaking natural scenery. But no matter when you go, there’s always something special to experience.

Understanding Hangzhou’s Weather

🌸 Spring in Hangzhou (March–May)

🌡️ Temperature: 10–25°C (50–77°F)
🌦️ Weather: Mild, increasing humidity, frequent rain showers

Spring in Hangzhou feels like stepping into an ink painting—West Lake’s willows turn green, peach blossoms bloom, and the city awakens from winter. April is peak cherry blossom season, making it one of the most photogenic times to visit. That said, March can still be chilly, and April and May bring frequent showers, so come prepared.

✅ What to Wear:

  • Layers! Mornings and evenings can be cool.
  • A light waterproof jacket—rain showers come and go.
  • Comfortable walking shoes—West Lake’s scenic paths are a must-explore.

🌟 Best Things to Do:

  • Cherry blossom viewing at Taiziwan Park 🌸
  • Dragon Well Tea Village (Longjing Village) – Spring is tea harvest season, and you can watch farmers handpick fresh tea leaves.
  • West Lake boat ride in the mist – The scenery is straight out of a Chinese watercolor painting.

🎊 Local Festivals:

  • Qingming Festival (Early April) – Pay respects to ancestors and enjoy traditional snacks.
  • West Lake Tea Culture Expo (April–May) – A must for Longjing green tea lovers!

☀️ Summer in Hangzhou (June–September)

🌡️ Temperature: 25–35°C (77–95°F), occasionally hitting 38°C (100°F)
🌦️ Weather: Hot, humid, frequent rain (June–July plum rain season)

Hangzhou’s summers are intensely hot and humid, but also incredibly vibrant. West Lake’s lotus flowers are in full bloom, and the city’s nightlife comes alive after sunset. June kicks off the (Plum Rain) season, bringing persistent showers, while August and September bring occasional typhoons. If you visit in summer, prepare for heat, crowds, and sudden downpours.

✅ What to Wear:

  • Light, breathable clothing (cotton or linen)
  • A portable fan and lots of sunscreen
  • An umbrella—for both rain and sun protection

🌟 Best Things to Do:

  • Evening boat rides on West Lake – Avoid the daytime heat and enjoy the stunning sunset.
  • Hiking in Moganshan’s bamboo forests – A cool escape from the city’s summer heat.
  • Explore Qinghefang Ancient Street at night – The evening breeze makes it more bearable.

🎊 Local Festivals:

  • Dragon Boat Festival (June) – Watch thrilling dragon boat races along the Grand Canal.
  • Qiantang River Tidal Bore Festival (August–September) – Experience the world’s largest tidal bore, where waves surge up to 9 meters high!
♥️One of the biggest challenges when traveling abroad is how to stay connected in Hangzhou? Don’t worry—you can opt for an eSIM! It’s affordable and incredibly convenient!

🍂 Autumn in Hangzhou (October–November)

🌡️ Temperature: 15–25°C (59–77°F)
🌦️ Weather: Crisp, dry, and comfortable

Autumn is Hangzhou’s most beautiful season, with golden ginkgo trees, cool breezes, and some of the clearest skies of the year. If you love hiking, photography, or just strolling around West Lake, this is the best time to visit.

✅ What to Wear:

  • Light sweaters and long-sleeve shirts
  • A windproof jacket—evenings can get chilly
  • Sunglasses—autumn sunshine is bright!

🌟 Best Things to Do:

  • Visit Manjuelong Village for stunning autumn foliage 🍁
  • Take a sunset boat ride on West Lake – The reflections are stunning in fall.
  • Enjoy osmanthus tea at a traditional tea house – Osmanthus flowers bloom in autumn, adding a unique floral scent to tea.

🎊 Local Festivals:

  • Mid-Autumn Festival (September/October) – Enjoy osmanthus-flavored mooncakes and lantern displays.
  • West Lake International Marathon (November) – A scenic running route along the lake.

❄️ Winter in Hangzhou (December–February)

🌡️ Temperature: 2–12°C (36–54°F)
🌦️ Weather: Cold, damp, occasional snowfall

Winter in Hangzhou is misty and magical. Though snow is rare, when it falls, it transforms the temples and pagodas into a winter wonderland. The humidity makes it feel colder than the actual temperature, so bundle up! The best part? Fewer crowds and lower hotel prices.

✅ What to Wear:

  • Thick coats and scarves—the cold can be deceiving!
  • Waterproof shoes—pavements can get slippery.
  • Heat packs—locals often use them to keep warm.

🌟 Best Things to Do:

  • Visit Lingyin Temple in the mist – The atmosphere is otherworldly.
  • Enjoy a traditional Hangzhou hotpot – A warm and comforting winter meal.
  • Take a quiet boat ride on West Lake – With fewer tourists, it feels like a private retreat.

🎊 Local Festivals:

  • Chinese New Year (January/February) – Experience fireworks, temple fairs, and local delicacies.
  • Plum Blossom Festival (Late February–March) – Stroll through Meijiawu Tea Village when the plum blossoms bloom.

Penyambut tetamu meja depan 小祝 sangat membantu dan responsif. Menghargai respons pantas mereka. Terima kasih 小祝.

My family enjoyed our stay in Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Hangzhou. The rooms were clean. The staff including receptionists and cleaners were courteous and helpful. We also paid for the hotel buffet which has a wide selection on food. The hotel is also next to the Wulin night market. It is also within walking distance to the West Lake which is a popular tourist attraction. Highly recommended.

Easy stroll to West lake, Wulin night market, Yintai shopping mall and many great restaurants nearby. We stayed three nights in one lake view suite and one city view room. The view from the lake view suite is fantastic! The attached sunset picture was actually taken in the room! I want to call out for Yajun and Huapin from the service team who are super friendly and gave us some great tips for Hangzhou! The breakfast is included with a good variety of choices. My kids especially love the Doraemon dissert which is so cute! See my attached photo too. On our last day, we even walked to the subway station at Fengqi road with several big luggages to catch a train at the railway east station. Without a local mobile number it's hard to catch a cab and cabs are usually small to fit more than one big luggage. Just notice at the intersection of Qingchun and Yan'an road you cannot turn left but to cross the pedestrian bridge with the escalator to the other side of the road first.

I never stay somewhere else for my business travels to Hangzhou since 2018. You may find the breakfast selection not too variety. However their hospitality make their accommodation always full with customer. Its location is in the middle of city which make commute between places easier. In fact, the nearest metro station only about a few minutes from the stay. All staffs are very helpful and friendly. Their body care product worked really well for my skin. I really love it.

Lovely stay, as always, for the Citigo chain. Hotel location is close to Kerry Center and a short drive from West Lake. Staff is friendly and accomodating. Our room was located very close to the street and there was a lot of traffic noise. We were able to use the ear outside provided. Our room did not have the black out curtins that some Citigo locations have. But otherwise, the room layout was nice and the hotel was just as expected. We always choose to stay with Citigo, regardless of what city in China we visit!

i booked a twin room, requested for non smoking area as we are sensitive to it. they gave us 9018. but after going inside, i noticed traces of smoke smell. i called the reception right away. the manager immediately changed our room to 1018. I was so amazed how quick she attended to my concern. so i am giving this hotel the highest possible rating i can give. the breakfast buffet is very satisfying. with all the food you want to eat. from soup, veggies, rice, cereals, fruits, bread, coffee, soy milk, hot milk, noodles. honestly, i didnt seem to look for other food. becuase 36RMB for a breakfast buffet is a jackpot!! where else can you find a sumptuous meal for only 36RMB?? only in Merchant Marco Edgelake Hotel!! although the location is quite outskirt.. if you have big luggages and you prefer to walk, it would be a bit troublesome to you. but with the cost per night, the service, attitude of the staff, i will definitely come back to this hotel and will recommend to my friends.

We have been guests of Huachen for many years now- with a short break caused by Coronavirus. We love: its location - a walk from the Lake and the transport connections After recent modernization. It resulted in cleaner bathroom , water properly hot, towels new. In most rooms- Curtains- need refreshing.By mistake we booked a ‚ family with small child rooms- the decor leaves room for improvement. Beds comfortable. Single rooms are airier and the curtains less…tired. Breakfast is well varied , and affordable. Despite a slightly outdated decor- it is our top choice for location and quick and kind service offered at Huachen. In the lobby - a tiny office offering local tours and shows which we had enjoyed with our previous stays.

Specially the cleaning lady on 12th floor, that was such a kind and nice person, made us feel welcomed, even though we didn't speak the language. Also she was super fast and effective on her job! I'm sorry I didn't end up getting her name to tha nk her personally for all the care she gave us while we stayed there! Hope the managers can pass on to her this message!

Disappointing Experience at Twinkle Hotel, Hangzhou My stay at Twinkle Hotel in Hangzhou left me with mixed feelings. The hotel itself is beautiful, with spacious, clean, and comfortable rooms. However, several aspects of my experience were quite disappointing, enough that I regret my decision to stay there. Upon arrival, I found the front desk staff to be somewhat indifferent. While they efficiently checked me in, their lack of warmth and smiles made them appear disinterested in guests' experience. One of the primary reasons I chose this hotel was its advertised pool. However, upon arrival, I discovered that the hotel doesn't have a pool of its own. Instead, guests are directed to a nearby pool club, which, to its credit, was nice. However, the hotel misrepresents the pool service; they only provide a one-time ticket for the entire stay. If you wish to use the pool again on another day, you must pay an additional 128 RMB. This crucial information was not disclosed during booking, which I consider to be deceptive advertising. Another disappointment was regarding a promised free gift of digital version pictures, as stated in the booking. When I inquired about this at the front desk, they claimed to have no knowledge of such an offer. This inconsistency added to my frustration and left me questioning whether the fault lies with the booking app or the hotel itself.

Awesome hotel. Stayed with family just for a day, but that was so memorable. Staffs were so kind, helpful. They took care of all our requirements. Breakfast was not rich as during CNY their cook were out of station, so not sure how is the breakfast in general. But the hotel is worth staying due to it’s cheap price. Transportation may not be very convenient as its not located in Hangzhou city center. If you drive, then this hotel is a good deal for sure.

Best Time to Visit Hangzhou Based on Your Travel Style

1️⃣ Budget Travelers: Best Time to Visit Hangzhou for Cheap Flights & Hotels

If you're traveling on a budget, winter (December–February) and late summer (July–August) are the cheapest times to visit Hangzhou. Flights and hotels drop by up to 40% compared to peak months, and tourist crowds are minimal. While winter is chilly and misty, it adds a romantic, serene vibe to West Lake, and summer’s heat can be managed with early morning or evening explorations.

💰 Money-Saving Tips:

  • Book flights at least 4-6 weeks in advance for the best rates, or use fare alerts to track price drops.
  • Stay in local guesthouses or boutique hotels—many offer great off-season discounts.
  • Dine at local noodle shops rather than tourist-heavy restaurants—Hangzhou’s street food is top-tier and cheap!
  • Avoid Chinese New Year (late January/early February)—this is an exception to the budget season rule, as prices spike.

2️⃣ Luxury Travelers: The Best Months for High-End Experiences in Hangzhou

For a five-star Hangzhou getaway, visit during spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) when the weather is perfect for private lake cruises, fine dining, and premium spa retreats. These seasons are also prime for Hangzhou’s top-tier experiences, like a VIP tour of Longjing Tea Village or dining at Michelin-starred Chinese restaurants like Jin Sha.

🌟 Exclusive Experiences:

  • Stay at the Amanfayun, a luxury resort set in a secluded monastery village.
  • Take a private boat tour on West Lake at sunset, with a curated Hangzhou-style dinner.
  • Indulge in a luxury spa experience at the Four Seasons, featuring treatments with Longjing tea.

3️⃣ Adventure Seekers: Best Time to Visit Hangzhou for Outdoor Thrills

If you're all about hiking, cycling, and exploring Hangzhou’s nature, the best time to visit is autumn (October–November). The crisp, dry weather makes it ideal for trekking up Fei Lai Feng (Flying Peak), biking around West Lake, or exploring Moganshan’s bamboo forests.

⛰️ Top Adventure Experiences:

  • Hike Jiuxi (Nine Creeks) in autumn—a lesser-known trail with waterfalls and fiery maple trees.
  • Cycle through tea plantations in spring (March–May), especially in Meijiawu and Longjing Village.
  • Try paddleboarding on West Lake in summer (early mornings are best to avoid the heat!).

⚠️ Weather Considerations:

  • Avoid summer afternoons (June–August)—the humidity makes long outdoor adventures unbearable.
  • Winter hikes (December–February) can be stunning, but trails might be damp and slippery.

4️⃣ Cultural Enthusiasts: Best Time to Visit Hangzhou for Festivals & History

Hangzhou is a cultural paradise year-round, but spring (March–April) and autumn (September–October) are best for cultural experiences. These months bring lively festivals and comfortable weather for temple visits, museum tours, and ancient street explorations.

🎭 Must-Experience Cultural Events:

  • Qingming Festival (April) – Watch locals pay respects at Lingyin Temple and enjoy traditional Qingming pastries.
  • Mid-Autumn Festival (September/October) – Visit Gu Shan (Solitary Hill) for the best moon-viewing spots and taste osmanthus-infused mooncakes.
  • West Lake Lotus Festival (July) – A summer highlight where the lake is covered in vibrant lotus flowers.

🎟️ Tips for Cultural Travelers:

  • Visit Lingyin Temple early in the morning to avoid tour group rush hours.
  • Stay in a traditional Chinese-style inn in the Hefang Street area for an immersive experience.
  • Plan around Golden Week (October 1–7)—this national holiday brings extreme crowds.

5️⃣ Family Travelers: Best Time to Visit Hangzhou with Kids

If you're traveling with kids, I recommend visiting late spring (May) or early autumn (September–October). The mild temperatures and low humidity make outdoor activities enjoyable without tiring the little ones.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Kid-Friendly Attractions by Season:

  • Spring (March–May): See baby animals at Hangzhou Safari Park, take a family boat ride on West Lake, and enjoy picnics in Taiziwan Park.
  • Summer (June–August): Hangzhou Ocean Park and wetlands boat tours are great for cooling off.
  • Autumn (September–November): The Chrysanthemum Festival at Guo’s Villa is a colorful, relaxing experience for kids.
