Practical Travel Tips for Your Kuching Itinerary

Carpenter St

Make your Kuching trip smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free with these practical and thoughtful travel tips:

🚗 Getting Around Easily – Kuching is a compact and walkable city, but the easiest way to travel between attractions is by using Grab, the popular ride-hailing app in Malaysia. Public buses are available but may not always be punctual or frequent.

🎫 Plan Ahead for Tours – For visits to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Bako National Park, or Sarawak Cultural Village, it's a good idea to book in advance, especially if you want a guided experience or need transportation arranged.

👟 Dress Comfortably & Respectfully – Light, breathable clothing is ideal for Kuching’s tropical climate. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially for nature outings. When visiting mosques or rural villages, dress modestly to respect local customs.

🍽️ Dine by the River – Enjoy a scenic meal at riverside restaurants along the Kuching Waterfront or explore rooftop dining spots like The Granary Kitchen + Bar for a unique view of the city and river at sunset.

🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes – Don’t leave Kuching without trying Sarawak laksa, kolo mee, ayam pansuh (chicken cooked in bamboo), and midin (jungle fern). Head to Top Spot Food Court, Lepau, or local kopitiams for authentic flavours.

Avoid the Heat – Plan outdoor activities like park visits or long walks in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

🎭 Cultural Experiences – Take time to visit a traditional longhouse, watch a cultural performance at Sarawak Cultural Village, or explore local crafts at the Main Bazaar. Engaging with Sarawak’s diverse ethnic cultures is a highlight of any visit.

🛍️ Smart Shopping Tips – For souvenirs, check out Main Bazaar for handicrafts, Satok Weekend Market for local snacks, and Plaza Merdeka or The Spring Mall for modern shopping. Look out for Sarawak pepper, kek lapis, and handmade textiles.

🌿 Best Time to Visit – Kuching is a year-round destination, but the drier months from April to September offer better weather for outdoor adventures and wildlife spotting. If you're planning to visit national parks, avoid the rainy season (usually November to February) for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Booked the deluxe room and it is a newly renovated room. However, due to the ongoing renovation on other floors, there is noise of drilling and knocking sounds as early at 8am. Otherwise, the hotel has a very nice layout and is spacious. Location is superb..close to waterfront and eating places by walking. Friendly and helpful staff. One other comment is that the housekeeping is not done throughly. Strands of hair found on the bathroom floor even after the room is cleaned. Overall, had a great stay for 4 nights.

We had a lovely 3D2N mother-daughter and intergenerational friends’ stay at Cove 55, Santubong, and it was exactly the sort of peaceful break we were looking for. The grounds are beautiful and very calming, with a real sense of tranquility and serenity. The staff were lovely — warm, attentive and thoughtful throughout our stay. Our mothers are in their 80s, and the pace and setting were perfect for them. Two nights felt just right for a restful getaway. The room was spacious, bright and comfortable. The bed was firm and very comfortable, and the air-conditioning was powerful — an absolute godsend in the Santubong heat. The complimentary water, coffee and tea provided were adequate. The weather was generally nice, although scorching during certain parts of the day, so we were glad to have a cool room to retreat to. Our stay was simple and very enjoyable: we basically ate, chatted and swam. The food was good quality, with generous portions, and we were very satisfied with the meals. The place feels lived in rather than brand new, but it is respectably clean. I would not describe it as immaculate, but it is by far cleaner than many hotels and retreats in Kuching. The only thing I wish we had done differently was to request ground-floor rooms in advance. As our mothers are in their 80s, it would have been easier for them to avoid climbing the stairs. For anyone travelling with elderly guests or anyone with mobility concerns, I would suggest requesting ground-floor rooms when booking. Overall, Cove 55 is a beautiful, serene place for a quiet escape, especially for families or friends wanting to slow down and spend time together. I would happily recommend it.

The hotel is beautifully designed, with an elegant atmosphere that creates a very comfortable stay. The interior is stylish, and the bed was exceptionally comfortable, allowing me to have a great night's sleep. However, I believe the hotel should pay more attention to housekeeping and quality control, especially considering it is a newly opened property. The white coffee table in my room was covered with a noticeable layer of dust. When I wiped it with my hand, dust came off immediately. Surprisingly, the other tables in the room were clean, so it seemed that this particular table had been overlooked. I also found dust on the floor beside the glass panel next to the bathtub, which looked as though it had not been cleaned. In addition, there was a loose screw beside the fish tank, along with visible traces of unfinished construction or installation work. These details should have been properly cleaned up and inspected before the room was handed over to guests. The weighing scale also had visible dirty marks on it, which did not leave a good impression. Another disappointment was that I called Guest Services twice to report these issues, but no one answered either call. In the end, I gave up trying. Overall, I genuinely enjoyed the hotel's beautiful design, elegant ambience, and comfortable bed. My experience would have been much better if more attention had been given to cleanliness, room inspection, and guest service. I hope the management will address these issues, as the hotel has great potential to provide an excellent guest experience. Should the hotel require further clarification, I would be happy to provide videos documenting the issues I encountered during my stay. I hope this feedback will be helpful in improving the overall guest experience. Room 501

The hotel is connected by a skybridge to a shopping complex with lots of great food options! The wooden barrel fish was delicious! Every aspect of the service was top-notch! Stayed here during my recent trip to Kuching. The hotel’s location is very convenient, with easy access to the waterfront, restaurants, and nearby attractions. The room was comfortable and sufficient for a short stay, although some parts of the hotel could benefit from a refresh. The staff were friendly and helpful whenever assistance was needed. Breakfast was acceptable, but the selection was fairly limited. Overall, the hotel offers decent value for money and is suitable for travelers looking for a centrally located place to stay without spending too much. A good choice for a short stay in Kuching.

The facilities are run down. The desk in the room had a peeling laminate, and the toilet paper holder was moldy? It was so broken that the holder, which was built into the cabinet, would fall out every time I tried to get toilet paper. I even left a note for the staff asking them to refill the room amenities, but they still weren't replenished. The view was nice though. The hotel shows its age, but overall it is still well-maintained and perfectly acceptable for the price point. While the design and furnishings feel a little dated, everything was generally clean and in working order, making it a practical and comfortable stay rather than a luxurious one. On the positive side, the location is definitely a strong advantage the hotel is conveniently close to a mall and several attractions, making it easy to get around and find food or entertainment.
