Practical Travel Tips for Your Kuching Itinerary

Carpenter St

Make your Kuching trip smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free with these practical and thoughtful travel tips:

🚗 Getting Around Easily – Kuching is a compact and walkable city, but the easiest way to travel between attractions is by using Grab, the popular ride-hailing app in Malaysia. Public buses are available but may not always be punctual or frequent.

🎫 Plan Ahead for Tours – For visits to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Bako National Park, or Sarawak Cultural Village, it's a good idea to book in advance, especially if you want a guided experience or need transportation arranged.

👟 Dress Comfortably & Respectfully – Light, breathable clothing is ideal for Kuching’s tropical climate. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially for nature outings. When visiting mosques or rural villages, dress modestly to respect local customs.

🍽️ Dine by the River – Enjoy a scenic meal at riverside restaurants along the Kuching Waterfront or explore rooftop dining spots like The Granary Kitchen + Bar for a unique view of the city and river at sunset.

🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes – Don’t leave Kuching without trying Sarawak laksa, kolo mee, ayam pansuh (chicken cooked in bamboo), and midin (jungle fern). Head to Top Spot Food Court, Lepau, or local kopitiams for authentic flavours.

Avoid the Heat – Plan outdoor activities like park visits or long walks in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

🎭 Cultural Experiences – Take time to visit a traditional longhouse, watch a cultural performance at Sarawak Cultural Village, or explore local crafts at the Main Bazaar. Engaging with Sarawak’s diverse ethnic cultures is a highlight of any visit.

🛍️ Smart Shopping Tips – For souvenirs, check out Main Bazaar for handicrafts, Satok Weekend Market for local snacks, and Plaza Merdeka or The Spring Mall for modern shopping. Look out for Sarawak pepper, kek lapis, and handmade textiles.

🌿 Best Time to Visit – Kuching is a year-round destination, but the drier months from April to September offer better weather for outdoor adventures and wildlife spotting. If you're planning to visit national parks, avoid the rainy season (usually November to February) for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Everything was fine, no major issues. But was expecting a bit more for a RM1500 per night stay, eg more attentive and coordinated staff, larger breakfast spread, bathroom drains that didn't smell. Not comparable with other hotels in this price point. Porters were not well informed of facility operating hours. maître d' at restaurant was inconspicuous, walked in and several staff just stared at us, felt awkward and unwelcoming. Food at breakfast was pretty average, not bad, but could do with a more premium touch.

For those who may not know, the lobby is located on level 2 and is accessible by lift. The room I stayed in was very spacious; however, the cleanliness could be improved, as there were stains on the white duvet cover. I was on the 10th floor, and it was quiet at night, despite being in the city center. A water purifier is available along the corridor, and cooking utensils are provided, so you can prepare your own meals if you'd like. The Spring Shopping Mall is just opposite the hotel and can be easily accessed via a skybridge.

Stayed at the old wing (block where the main lobby is). Everything needs an upgrade. From the carpet to the doors of the cabinet and working desk, the power plugs on the wall, the phone, the bathroom with mould in the corners etc. it’s also always cold in the old wing. Slept without turning on the air con every night. Breakfast was buffet style and had a good variety. But for me; the only thing that was good was the coffee machine. Maybe also because I’ve been to this city many times and I know there are a lot of good food just a few mins walk away. Staff was great though. Housekeeping cleaned the bathtub rubber mat for me, brought water when asked and cafe staff were friendly and nice. Many other hotel options in the city; I wouldn’t recommend this one.

I have always stayed in Merdeka Palace and Suites each time I go to Kuching because of location. For this trip I stayed in Room 1301 from 7 - 10 Dec 2025. Pleasant surprise during my stay at the 2-bedroom suites because some refurbishment have been done. The old carpets were replaced with SPC flooring. Old furnishings were replaced with new curtains, 2-seater settee and a Samsung flat TV. The 2-bedroom suite is really spacious and you get a good view of the city centre facing the Dewan Undangan Negeri building. WELL DONE TO THE MANAGEMENT for the upgrading works.

Stayed for 3 nights. Overall, the staff were very nice and humble. The location is quite good, as you can easily reach many places from here. The only feedback I would give is that the water dispenser should be placed in the corridor instead of requiring guests to request it from staff, so we can refill our bottles by ourselves. The hotel is also not near the main road, so it is generally quiet at night. Occasionally, the steamboat stall near the hotel plays music quite loudly, but it did not really bother me.
