Practical Travel Tips for Your Kuching Itinerary

Carpenter St

Make your Kuching trip smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free with these practical and thoughtful travel tips:

🚗 Getting Around Easily – Kuching is a compact and walkable city, but the easiest way to travel between attractions is by using Grab, the popular ride-hailing app in Malaysia. Public buses are available but may not always be punctual or frequent.

🎫 Plan Ahead for Tours – For visits to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Bako National Park, or Sarawak Cultural Village, it's a good idea to book in advance, especially if you want a guided experience or need transportation arranged.

👟 Dress Comfortably & Respectfully – Light, breathable clothing is ideal for Kuching’s tropical climate. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially for nature outings. When visiting mosques or rural villages, dress modestly to respect local customs.

🍽️ Dine by the River – Enjoy a scenic meal at riverside restaurants along the Kuching Waterfront or explore rooftop dining spots like The Granary Kitchen + Bar for a unique view of the city and river at sunset.

🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes – Don’t leave Kuching without trying Sarawak laksa, kolo mee, ayam pansuh (chicken cooked in bamboo), and midin (jungle fern). Head to Top Spot Food Court, Lepau, or local kopitiams for authentic flavours.

Avoid the Heat – Plan outdoor activities like park visits or long walks in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

🎭 Cultural Experiences – Take time to visit a traditional longhouse, watch a cultural performance at Sarawak Cultural Village, or explore local crafts at the Main Bazaar. Engaging with Sarawak’s diverse ethnic cultures is a highlight of any visit.

🛍️ Smart Shopping Tips – For souvenirs, check out Main Bazaar for handicrafts, Satok Weekend Market for local snacks, and Plaza Merdeka or The Spring Mall for modern shopping. Look out for Sarawak pepper, kek lapis, and handmade textiles.

🌿 Best Time to Visit – Kuching is a year-round destination, but the drier months from April to September offer better weather for outdoor adventures and wildlife spotting. If you're planning to visit national parks, avoid the rainy season (usually November to February) for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Everything was fine, no major issues. But was expecting a bit more for a RM1500 per night stay, eg more attentive and coordinated staff, larger breakfast spread, bathroom drains that didn't smell. Not comparable with other hotels in this price point. Porters were not well informed of facility operating hours. maître d' at restaurant was inconspicuous, walked in and several staff just stared at us, felt awkward and unwelcoming. Food at breakfast was pretty average, not bad, but could do with a more premium touch.

Had a pleasant stay at the hotel. The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable, offering good value for money. The hotel is convenient located near the airport and connected to a shopping mall, making it easy to access food and essential. Breakfast was enjoyable with good variety of options, and the staff were generally friendly and helpful. However, there was a blackout during my stay that lasted more than 30 minutes, and it appeared that there was no backup generator available. Fortunately, it occurred in the early morning when there was some natural light. It would have been more challenging if it had happened at night. This is an area the hotel need to look into. Overall, still a comfortable stay, but improvements in this aspect would enhance the experience further.

Overall, my stay was excellent. The hotel is located in a prime spot in the heart of Kuching, right by the Sarawak River, making it a super convenient city hotel. 📍 **Outstanding Location** The hotel's location is one of its biggest highlights. You can easily walk to the Kuching Waterfront, the Cat Statues, Chinatown, and numerous restaurants and cafes. Whether you're traveling for leisure or business, it's a huge time-saver – you can complete most of your itinerary just by walking. 🛏️ **Comfortable and Spacious Rooms** The room size was larger than expected, with a sensible layout, comfortable beds, and excellent air conditioning. Some room types offer city or river views, which are beautiful at night, perfect for relaxing. The overall hygiene was good, making it a great value-for-money option. 🧹 **Service and Facilities** The front desk service was efficient, and both check-in and check-out were smooth. The hotel provides essential facilities like elevators, Wi-Fi, and breakfast service, which are perfectly adequate for daily needs. 🍽️ **Breakfast and Surroundings** The breakfast is a simple affair, but it's enough to kickstart your day. A bigger bonus is the abundance of fantastic eateries nearby. Within a few minutes' walk, you'll find local restaurants, cafes, and fast-food options, which is incredibly convenient. 🌟 **Overall Impression** If you prioritize 'location + value for money,' this hotel performs exceptionally well. It's ideal for travelers who enjoy urban exploration and convenience. The overall experience was relaxed and comfortable, making it a highly recommended accommodation choice in Kuching city center.

This is a classic older hotel. The biggest highlight is definitely the great views and relaxing atmosphere, especially the balcony area which is very comfortable and offers excellent scenery. We stayed in a triple room. The room itself felt quite old, and the facilities clearly showed their age. As for cleanliness, it was a case of 'looks okay on the surface, but the details are lacking.' For instance, there were some less-than-clean marks on the sheets, and while the towels had clearly been washed, their dark color wasn't ideal. The bathroom's cleanliness was also just average; not overtly dirty, but not meticulously clean either. Overall, the hotel's strong points are its views and location. However, there's room for improvement regarding the room's hardware and the detailed cleanliness. It's best suited for guests who prioritize scenic views and are less sensitive about the age of the accommodations.

While the room wasn't huge, it had all the essential amenities and the location was excellent. There were plenty of dining options nearby, making it super convenient for both getting around and eating out. The only downside was the inconsistent hot water supply; it wasn't hot enough and quickly turned cold, which really impacted my shower experience. I hope they can improve their hot water system.

I stayed here for a few nights and had a generally acceptable experience. The room itself was a bit old and dated. However, looking past the dated decor, the overall stay was okay. The room was kept clean, the bed was comfortable enough for a good night's sleep, and all the basic amenities worked without any major issues. The staff were friendly, and the location was quite convenient. If you are looking for a modern, luxury experience, this might not be the place for you. But if you just need a functional, reasonably priced place to crash for a couple of days, it gets the job done. It's nothing fancy, but overall ok.

A ruin of its former glory. This hotel was clearly state-of-the-art back in the day. There's a light control panel by the bed, a bar on the terrace, and so on.
