Practical Travel Tips for Your Kuching Itinerary

Carpenter St

Make your Kuching trip smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free with these practical and thoughtful travel tips:

🚗 Getting Around Easily – Kuching is a compact and walkable city, but the easiest way to travel between attractions is by using Grab, the popular ride-hailing app in Malaysia. Public buses are available but may not always be punctual or frequent.

🎫 Plan Ahead for Tours – For visits to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Bako National Park, or Sarawak Cultural Village, it's a good idea to book in advance, especially if you want a guided experience or need transportation arranged.

👟 Dress Comfortably & Respectfully – Light, breathable clothing is ideal for Kuching’s tropical climate. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially for nature outings. When visiting mosques or rural villages, dress modestly to respect local customs.

🍽️ Dine by the River – Enjoy a scenic meal at riverside restaurants along the Kuching Waterfront or explore rooftop dining spots like The Granary Kitchen + Bar for a unique view of the city and river at sunset.

🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes – Don’t leave Kuching without trying Sarawak laksa, kolo mee, ayam pansuh (chicken cooked in bamboo), and midin (jungle fern). Head to Top Spot Food Court, Lepau, or local kopitiams for authentic flavours.

Avoid the Heat – Plan outdoor activities like park visits or long walks in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

🎭 Cultural Experiences – Take time to visit a traditional longhouse, watch a cultural performance at Sarawak Cultural Village, or explore local crafts at the Main Bazaar. Engaging with Sarawak’s diverse ethnic cultures is a highlight of any visit.

🛍️ Smart Shopping Tips – For souvenirs, check out Main Bazaar for handicrafts, Satok Weekend Market for local snacks, and Plaza Merdeka or The Spring Mall for modern shopping. Look out for Sarawak pepper, kek lapis, and handmade textiles.

🌿 Best Time to Visit – Kuching is a year-round destination, but the drier months from April to September offer better weather for outdoor adventures and wildlife spotting. If you're planning to visit national parks, avoid the rainy season (usually November to February) for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Booked the deluxe room and it is a newly renovated room. However, due to the ongoing renovation on other floors, there is noise of drilling and knocking sounds as early at 8am. Otherwise, the hotel has a very nice layout and is spacious. Location is superb..close to waterfront and eating places by walking. Friendly and helpful staff. One other comment is that the housekeeping is not done throughly. Strands of hair found on the bathroom floor even after the room is cleaned. Overall, had a great stay for 4 nights.

We had a lovely 3D2N mother-daughter and intergenerational friends’ stay at Cove 55, Santubong, and it was exactly the sort of peaceful break we were looking for. The grounds are beautiful and very calming, with a real sense of tranquility and serenity. The staff were lovely — warm, attentive and thoughtful throughout our stay. Our mothers are in their 80s, and the pace and setting were perfect for them. Two nights felt just right for a restful getaway. The room was spacious, bright and comfortable. The bed was firm and very comfortable, and the air-conditioning was powerful — an absolute godsend in the Santubong heat. The complimentary water, coffee and tea provided were adequate. The weather was generally nice, although scorching during certain parts of the day, so we were glad to have a cool room to retreat to. Our stay was simple and very enjoyable: we basically ate, chatted and swam. The food was good quality, with generous portions, and we were very satisfied with the meals. The place feels lived in rather than brand new, but it is respectably clean. I would not describe it as immaculate, but it is by far cleaner than many hotels and retreats in Kuching. The only thing I wish we had done differently was to request ground-floor rooms in advance. As our mothers are in their 80s, it would have been easier for them to avoid climbing the stairs. For anyone travelling with elderly guests or anyone with mobility concerns, I would suggest requesting ground-floor rooms when booking. Overall, Cove 55 is a beautiful, serene place for a quiet escape, especially for families or friends wanting to slow down and spend time together. I would happily recommend it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Stay & Delicious Dinner I had a very pleasant stay at Riverside Majestic Hotel. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay. One of the highlights was having dinner at the Puteri Lounge. I enjoyed the braised beef short ribs served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The beef was tender, flavorful, and very satisfying. I also had a hot cup of coffee, which was the perfect complement to the meal. Overall, it was a relaxing stay with good food, great service, and a comfortable atmosphere. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting Kuching. Highly recommended! 😊

The hotel is quite new, and very close to the airport. The buffet breakfast is good. However, it seems the staff were not familiar with the system so the check-in took a long time. Besides, there were renovation noises at 8-9am in the morning upstairs which was a bit disturbing. Lastly, it can take a long time for deposits refund (3 days already and I haven’t received it)

Had a pleasant stay at the hotel. The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable, offering good value for money. The hotel is convenient located near the airport and connected to a shopping mall, making it easy to access food and essential. Breakfast was enjoyable with good variety of options, and the staff were generally friendly and helpful. However, there was a blackout during my stay that lasted more than 30 minutes, and it appeared that there was no backup generator available. Fortunately, it occurred in the early morning when there was some natural light. It would have been more challenging if it had happened at night. This is an area the hotel need to look into. Overall, still a comfortable stay, but improvements in this aspect would enhance the experience further.

The staff were friendly and helpful whenever I needed assistance, which made the whole experience even better. The location was also very convenient, with easy access to nearby shops and restaurants. Overall, everything was smooth and hassle-free. If I had to mention one small thing, it would be that the check-in process took a little longer than expected, but it wasn’t a big issue. I would definitely consider staying here again and would recommend it to others looking for a comfortable and reliable place to stay.

This is an older, established hotel located in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak in East Malaysia, right on the waterfront of the Kuching River. It's surrounded by several other star-rated hotels, including three international chain hotels. I had a layover in Singapore and arrived in Kuching at night, so I booked this hotel for one night as a stopover. While the hotel is a bit old, the room environment was decent. The breakfast was a 'Western-style' breakfast, so it was quite simple. The same building as the hotel houses offices, including the Brunei consulate and a 7-Eleven. There's also a McDonald's just diagonally across from the hotel.

First of all, the general manager needs to re-educate the customer service staff again. During check-in, the staff had long hair and tied their hair and were tall but the service was so bad, I don't know what to say to get such disappointing service, what's more I also hotelier Please teach the staff how to welcome guests when the staff asked for cash deposit the staff used a rude tone like Sarawakians saying “nerit”. After that, okay it's okay still be patient so I said I always have RM50 I live there always said okay but he kept saying in a nerit tone only RM100. Okay I told my husband to get more money from the atm next to the hospital but even that at least he told me to sit down even though he didn't want to give me the key I understand but don't treat guests like that.

Excellent location right by the river with a beautiful view of the opposite bank. It's also very convenient being close to the river tour pier. The reception service was top-notch; not only were they polite, but they also anticipated guests' needs. The breakfast buffet offered a wide and generous selection. However, there weren't enough staff, so during busy times, table clearing was quite slow, and guests had to wait patiently.

The hotel shows its age, but overall it is still well-maintained and perfectly acceptable for the price point. While the design and furnishings feel a little dated, everything was generally clean and in working order, making it a practical and comfortable stay rather than a luxurious one. On the positive side, the location is definitely a strong advantage the hotel is conveniently close to a mall and several attractions, making it easy to get around and find food or entertainment. Overall, it’s a decent, budget-friendly option if you value location and practicality over modern facilities. I stay at 1601 room with very nice panoramic view of waterfront Kuching. For me, the location of this hotel is strategic as i like it near to the airport and beside one city mall. It's also near to Gala City. The front staff always ready to helped. My friend and I had stay here for 3 night. The room which we stay on our first night are comfortable, clean and tidy. But, the problem is when the glasses of the bathroom suddenly broke down by itself which result to my friend got slightly injured as she on her way to defecate. The hotel did pay for the compensation towards my friends after she went to the clinic. Hence, we need to change our room after the incidents. The second room are not so comfortable as on the second night i cannot sleep due to my skin got itchy, which, I believe it cause from the bedsheet. Then on the next day, i asked the housekeeping to change the bedsheet. The problem is solved. Overall, I'll give 7.5/10 to this hotel.
