Practical Travel Tips for Your Kuching Itinerary

Carpenter St

Make your Kuching trip smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free with these practical and thoughtful travel tips:

🚗 Getting Around Easily – Kuching is a compact and walkable city, but the easiest way to travel between attractions is by using Grab, the popular ride-hailing app in Malaysia. Public buses are available but may not always be punctual or frequent.

🎫 Plan Ahead for Tours – For visits to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Bako National Park, or Sarawak Cultural Village, it's a good idea to book in advance, especially if you want a guided experience or need transportation arranged.

👟 Dress Comfortably & Respectfully – Light, breathable clothing is ideal for Kuching’s tropical climate. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially for nature outings. When visiting mosques or rural villages, dress modestly to respect local customs.

🍽️ Dine by the River – Enjoy a scenic meal at riverside restaurants along the Kuching Waterfront or explore rooftop dining spots like The Granary Kitchen + Bar for a unique view of the city and river at sunset.

🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes – Don’t leave Kuching without trying Sarawak laksa, kolo mee, ayam pansuh (chicken cooked in bamboo), and midin (jungle fern). Head to Top Spot Food Court, Lepau, or local kopitiams for authentic flavours.

Avoid the Heat – Plan outdoor activities like park visits or long walks in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

🎭 Cultural Experiences – Take time to visit a traditional longhouse, watch a cultural performance at Sarawak Cultural Village, or explore local crafts at the Main Bazaar. Engaging with Sarawak’s diverse ethnic cultures is a highlight of any visit.

🛍️ Smart Shopping Tips – For souvenirs, check out Main Bazaar for handicrafts, Satok Weekend Market for local snacks, and Plaza Merdeka or The Spring Mall for modern shopping. Look out for Sarawak pepper, kek lapis, and handmade textiles.

🌿 Best Time to Visit – Kuching is a year-round destination, but the drier months from April to September offer better weather for outdoor adventures and wildlife spotting. If you're planning to visit national parks, avoid the rainy season (usually November to February) for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

I rarely leave comments, but after this trip, I feel the need to do so—overall, it was quite disappointing. This morning at breakfast, I found a dead mosquito on my plate and requested a replacement. However, the plate was returned to me, and it appeared to be the same one, with a mosquito leg still on it (I didn’t manage to take a photo). I’ve included another photo showing a cockroach leg in the room, which reflects my concern about the overall cleanliness. Service was also lacking. There was no proper introduction to the resort upon arrival. When we asked a staff member how to get to the beach, they simply nodded without giving any directions or confirming if access was allowed. We had to find our own way, which is not acceptable given the price point. That said, the room itself was excellent, especially the décor and the bathroom. However, for the mangrove room, be prepared for a noticeable (and somewhat unpleasant) mangrove smell, which makes the balcony less enjoyable.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Stay & Delicious Dinner I had a very pleasant stay at Riverside Majestic Hotel. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay. One of the highlights was having dinner at the Puteri Lounge. I enjoyed the braised beef short ribs served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The beef was tender, flavorful, and very satisfying. I also had a hot cup of coffee, which was the perfect complement to the meal. Overall, it was a relaxing stay with good food, great service, and a comfortable atmosphere. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting Kuching. Highly recommended! 😊

As the first person to write a review, I have to praise this hotel. It was my first business trip to Kuching, and this hotel suddenly appeared on the 18th. There were no reviews, which made me worried I might have a bad experience. I checked online and found it was part of the IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) group, and it was a renovated older hotel. After checking in, I felt it was incredibly good value for the price. The hotel's decor was grand and unique, with a youthful and stylish design. Many corners featured thoughtfully placed furniture and artwork. The facilities were excellent. Because the hotel is new, every corner of the room was spotless. As someone who travels frequently for business, I'm very particular about hotel cleanliness, and this hotel truly didn't disappoint. The front desk staff were very polite and welcoming. The bedding was very comfortable and soft, and I slept very well. The bathrobes were also of high quality, the towels were clean, and the toiletries smelled wonderful. The breakfast was plentiful with many choices, and I heard the dinner was also good. This hotel truly exceeded my expectations. Before this, I was torn between two other five-star hotels in Kuching, but after this comparison, I won't have to worry about choosing another one. Voco just opened on June 18th, and I still feel a slight smell of renovation. It gets better after turning on the air conditioning and ventilating. If you mind the smell of renovation, you can move in after September; I think the smell should dissipate by then. It's only about a 10-minute walk from the airport, and it's also about a 10-minute walk to popular spots like the Seaside Plaza. The location is very convenient. If I come here for business again, I will definitely choose this place without hesitation.

Had a pleasant stay at the hotel. The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable, offering good value for money. The hotel is convenient located near the airport and connected to a shopping mall, making it easy to access food and essential. Breakfast was enjoyable with good variety of options, and the staff were generally friendly and helpful. However, there was a blackout during my stay that lasted more than 30 minutes, and it appeared that there was no backup generator available. Fortunately, it occurred in the early morning when there was some natural light. It would have been more challenging if it had happened at night. This is an area the hotel need to look into. Overall, still a comfortable stay, but improvements in this aspect would enhance the experience further.

Stayed here during my recent trip to Kuching. The hotel’s location is very convenient, with easy access to the waterfront, restaurants, and nearby attractions. The room was comfortable and sufficient for a short stay, although some parts of the hotel could benefit from a refresh. The staff were friendly and helpful whenever assistance was needed. Breakfast was acceptable, but the selection was fairly limited. This is a classic older hotel. The biggest highlight is definitely the great views and relaxing atmosphere, especially the balcony area which is very comfortable and offers excellent scenery. We stayed in a triple room. The room itself felt quite old, and the facilities clearly showed their age. As for cleanliness, it was a case of 'looks okay on the surface, but the details are lacking.' For instance, there were some less-than-clean marks on the sheets, and while the towels had clearly been washed, their dark color wasn't ideal. The bathroom's cleanliness was also just average; not overtly dirty, but not meticulously clean either. Overall, the hotel's strong points are its views and location. However, there's room for improvement regarding the room's hardware and the detailed cleanliness. It's best suited for guests who prioritize scenic views and are less sensitive about the age of the accommodations.

My three-day stay at the Grand Margherita Hotel was the highlight of my trip to Kuching. Situated right in the heart of the city, the location is unbeatable. Being steps away from the iconic Cat Statue and the scenic Kuching Waterfront made exploring the city on foot incredibly easy. My room was facing the cat statue. The breakfast buffet was amazing,. Their Sarawak Laksa and Kolo Mee are authentic and packed with local flavor. I also love the Roti Jala. While the hotel carries a classic charm, the rooms are spacious, clean, and well-maintained. The hotel shows its age, but overall it is still well-maintained and perfectly acceptable for the price point. While the design and furnishings feel a little dated, everything was generally clean and in working order, making it a practical and comfortable stay rather than a luxurious one. On the positive side, the location is definitely a strong advantage the hotel is conveniently close to a mall and several attractions, making it easy to get around and find food or entertainment. Overall, it’s a decent, budget-friendly option if you value location and practicality over modern facilities. I stay at 1601 room with very nice panoramic view of waterfront Kuching. For me, Imperial Suites Serviced Apartment Kuching is in a very convenient location, especially since it’s close to Boulevard Shopping Mall and other nearby shops, so it’s easy for me to find food, groceries, and anything I need. I like that everything is within short distance, so it feels more lively compared to staying far from the city. The apartment-style setup is also nice because it’s more spacious and suitable if I’m staying longer or with family. Been years and many occasion it has been our choice of short stay in kuching especially if we did come in with a rental vehicle , it is very convenience in and out from many side of the road when we need to avoid road congestion on busy hours . On our last stay we did have some issue of being framed of a cracked glasses as we check in very late and went straight to bath and rest of the night, lucky we did notice the crack glass but thought it would be bery common as we expect of quite budget stay and it happen the next day while we re out around kuching being message of we need to pay for the glass because hotel front desk says we broke it . Anyway long story short , at that late evening while being back to the hotel , we went to the front desk just to make sure if they're are really seriously asking us to pay for the glasses . We are bit furious cause we did not broke it as it is as it is prior we checked in, just to make sure , i did ask the front desk to make sure and reconfirm it they really want us to pay for it , that they can charge us prior we re checking out the next early morning. But to our surprise the next morning while we're checking out , the feont desk did not bring that issue up anymore.
