Practical Travel Tips for Your Kuching Itinerary

Carpenter St

Make your Kuching trip smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free with these practical and thoughtful travel tips:

🚗 Getting Around Easily – Kuching is a compact and walkable city, but the easiest way to travel between attractions is by using Grab, the popular ride-hailing app in Malaysia. Public buses are available but may not always be punctual or frequent.

🎫 Plan Ahead for Tours – For visits to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Bako National Park, or Sarawak Cultural Village, it's a good idea to book in advance, especially if you want a guided experience or need transportation arranged.

👟 Dress Comfortably & Respectfully – Light, breathable clothing is ideal for Kuching’s tropical climate. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially for nature outings. When visiting mosques or rural villages, dress modestly to respect local customs.

🍽️ Dine by the River – Enjoy a scenic meal at riverside restaurants along the Kuching Waterfront or explore rooftop dining spots like The Granary Kitchen + Bar for a unique view of the city and river at sunset.

🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes – Don’t leave Kuching without trying Sarawak laksa, kolo mee, ayam pansuh (chicken cooked in bamboo), and midin (jungle fern). Head to Top Spot Food Court, Lepau, or local kopitiams for authentic flavours.

Avoid the Heat – Plan outdoor activities like park visits or long walks in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

🎭 Cultural Experiences – Take time to visit a traditional longhouse, watch a cultural performance at Sarawak Cultural Village, or explore local crafts at the Main Bazaar. Engaging with Sarawak’s diverse ethnic cultures is a highlight of any visit.

🛍️ Smart Shopping Tips – For souvenirs, check out Main Bazaar for handicrafts, Satok Weekend Market for local snacks, and Plaza Merdeka or The Spring Mall for modern shopping. Look out for Sarawak pepper, kek lapis, and handmade textiles.

🌿 Best Time to Visit – Kuching is a year-round destination, but the drier months from April to September offer better weather for outdoor adventures and wildlife spotting. If you're planning to visit national parks, avoid the rainy season (usually November to February) for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

I've been to Kuching over a dozen times, and this is by far my favorite and most satisfying hotel. I'll definitely stay here again on my next visit. 1) It puts me in a good mood. 2) The bedding is clean, fresh, and dry. 3) You need a room card to access the elevator, which provides high security. 4) All the little details are well thought out. I was a bit disappointed with the hotel. The deco was like in the 80s. The room is old & need upgrade badly. The stain on sofa & carpet. The damp smell. The room comes with microwave and fridge but both out of order! The whole hotel a bit run down. Such a waste. But as credit I would mention that the location is good. The frontlines were very helpful & friendly. However, I won’t choose this hotel on my next visit.

Unfortunately, the photos on the site didn’t match our expectations. As a first timer booking here, it wasn’t so good. This one room suite is fine for a 1 night stay but it is very small/tight to move. In the details there’s stated dining room/washing machine but the room was super tiny that the original facilities are already packed. Wifi didn’t work the whole night. The staff was quick to check but after that it still didn’t work so end up having to buy data to do work which was the reason for staying the night. The room was a bit dusty when i came too. There is no free parking for 1 night stay as told when checking in, so limited access card given (no access to parking space). Would probably not book this type of room again next time. A bit too below expectation. Would definitely ask more questions before booking next time, cannot trust photos given blindly.

The hotel is old, and only one elevator works, so getting up and down is a bit slow. The corridors and rooms smell damp. I booked a room for three people, but the amenities provided were always for two people. Fortunately, the staff were quick to respond when reminded. However, during our four-day, three-night stay, we consistently had to remind the staff.
