The Johor–Singapore border is primarily served by two major checkpoints: Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI / CIQ Johor Bahru) along the Causeway, and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (Second Link / Tuas). These crossings are recognised as among the busiest land borders in the world, handling hundreds of thousands of travellers daily. They play a vital role in connecting Johor Bahru and Singapore, supporting economic activity and cross-border movement. The checkpoints are widely used by a diverse range of travellers, including daily commuters working in Singapore, tourists exploring both destinations, and weekend travellers seeking leisure, shopping, or short getaways.

Typical Wait Times at the Johor–Singapore Border

Trafffic to SG

Wait times at the Johor–Singapore border vary significantly depending on the day, time, and checkpoint used. On weekdays, traffic is heavily influenced by daily commuters travelling between Johor Bahru and Singapore, resulting in peak congestion during early mornings and evenings. Weekends and public holidays tend to experience longer queues, particularly during popular travel windows such as Friday evenings and Sunday nights. During major festive seasons, including Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year, travellers should be prepared for extended delays that can exceed several hours. In general, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (JB Causeway) is more congested due to its central location, while the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (Second Link) offers a smoother journey, albeit with a longer driving distance.

Factors Affecting Wait Time at the Johor–Singapore Border

BORDER SG

Waiting time at the Johor–Singapore border can vary due to several factors, including traffic volume, immigration efficiency, and external conditions. Heavy congestion is common when large numbers of commuters and tourists travel between Johor Bahru and Singapore, especially during peak periods. In addition, slower immigration processing, security checks, weather conditions, special events, and road incidents can all contribute to longer delays at the checkpoints.

Factor

Description

Impact on Wait Time

Traffic Volume

High number of commuters and tourists

Increases congestion, especially during peak hours

Immigration Processing

Speed of passport clearance and staffing levels

Slower processing leads to longer queues

Security Checks

Random inspections or tightened security measures

Causes delays and intermittent stoppages

Weather Conditions

Heavy rain or poor visibility

Slows vehicle movement and traffic flow

Special Events

Events in Singapore or Johor Bahru

Sudden surge in travellers and vehicles

Road Incidents

Accidents, breakdowns, or lane closures

Best Times to Cross the Border

WOODLANDS CHECKPOINT

The best time to cross the Johor–Singapore border is during off-peak hours when traffic is lighter and immigration clearance is faster. Travelling early in the morning before peak commuter hours, during midday, or late at night can significantly reduce waiting time for those moving between Johor Bahru and Singapore. Conversely, certain periods should be avoided due to consistently heavy congestion, particularly at the end of the workweek and during major travel return windows.

Transport Options

KTM TO SG

Transport choice plays a significant role in determining how long you will spend at the Johor–Singapore border. Each mode offers different trade-offs between flexibility, cost, and waiting time, especially during peak periods between Johor Bahru and Singapore. While some options provide convenience, others are more efficient in avoiding congestion.

Transport Options and Waiting Time Impact

Transport Mode

Description

Impact on Waiting Time

Driving

Private cars offer flexibility and comfort

Often the longest wait during peak hours due to heavy traffic

Bus Services

Includes operators such as Causeway Link and SBS Transit

Can be faster than cars due to dedicated lanes, but still affected by congestion

Train (Shuttle Tebrau / KTM)

Direct rail service between JB and Singapore

Fastest and most predictable option; avoids road traffic completely

Motorcycles

Common among daily commuters

Typically the fastest during congestion due to dedicated lanes

If you are travelling during peak hours, consider taking the train for the most reliable journey, or use a motorcycle if available to minimise waiting time.

Great location! There's an MRT station not too far from the hotel, and the Singapore River is right behind it. You can walk about 1.5 km along the river to Clarke Quay, and even reach the National Gallery. The room itself was quite spacious, and I appreciated having purified drinking water. Personally, I'm not a fan of bathtubs, and the tissues disintegrated too easily when wet, which was a bit inconvenient. However, the hotel breakfast was excellent and had a great variety.

Booked for 2 adults and 1 child. The room was quite spacious with two 1-meter beds. The front desk staff, who I think was an Indian gentleman, asked if it was our first time in Singapore and what we thought of it. I told him it was our first time and we found it very clean and tidy, but I couldn't express more in English. Seeing that our child was tall, the gentleman kindly offered us an extra bed for free, saying it would help the mother rest well at night. Our whole family was very grateful for his thoughtful gesture. Although our child ultimately chose to share a bed with mom, not needing the extra bed, we still appreciate the gentleman's kindness. It showed us the humane side of this city, and we look forward to visiting Singapore again next time we have the chance.

I was a bit disappointed with the hotel during this second visit in June 2026. There was a noisy construction site outside the window, and drilling went on for several hours in one of the neighboring rooms due to renovations. I really wanted to rest after my journey but couldn't, neither in the room nor on the terrace. They couldn't find another room for me, but they tried to smooth things over, which is a plus for the hotel. This time, there were no welcome fruits, no second evening housekeeping service, and no replenishment of amenities, tea bags, or candies. Breakfast was good. The view was excellent; I watched the tree show from my room. Overall, considering the room price, I had hoped for better. My first visit was more enjoyable. It's best to go to the pool right when it opens at 6 AM – there are minimal people then. However, it's heavily chlorinated; even after washing, the smell wouldn't come out of my swimsuit. It was convenient that my room was in the same tower, so I could go to the pool in my bathrobe and slippers. There's free bottled water at the pool and a restaurant for snacks.

The front desk and bellboys were very welcoming. The cleanliness was also excellent, and the breakfast restaurant was spotless. The room was incredibly spacious. Plus, the location is fantastic – very close to both the subway and bus stops. Right across the street there's a mall with a wide variety of food and drink options. Thumbs up! 👍

I booked this hotel with a lot of trepidation, as I saw many negative reviews and debated for a long time. I'm not a shill, but I'll share my experience this time. We had a sea-view room. The bathroom was genuinely enormous, which really lifted my spirits. The golden view was absolutely stunning, especially at night, with Marina Bay Sands, the Merlion, St. Andrew's Cathedral, and the Singapore Flyer all perfectly visible. The bed was also comfortable, and my initial anxieties just melted away. There were certainly downsides. The air conditioning was genuinely loud. For someone sensitive to noise, it might be a bit hard to tolerate. But for those who aren't sensitive to sound and just crash after a long day of sightseeing, it's not an issue – like my family, who didn't notice the AC noise at all and found it perfectly acceptable. I, however, am very sensitive to sound. The toilet paper was also genuinely not good; I ended up buying my own from the supermarket. So, overall, for me, the pros outweighed the cons. I later read many reviews, and it seems the sea-view rooms might genuinely be better than other room types, for instance, being in the South Tower and not having connecting rooms. These are all my personal opinions, for reference only. I'm someone who really dislikes writing reviews, but since traveling abroad isn't easy and I agonized over choosing a hotel for over a month, I've been through the struggle, and I don't want you to go through the same dilemma.

This hotel is centrally located, very convenient to the MRT and bus stops, making it easy to get around even on foot. As it's surrounded by several academies, it's a paradise for young people with plenty of shopping malls and restaurants. The rooms have basic amenities, but they are thoughtfully designed, such as the hot water dispenser in the room, and shared irons, ironing boards, fridges, and microwaves on each floor. There are also coin-operated laundry facilities, which are very useful given Singapore's hot weather. The laundry room is connected to the gym, a nice touch so you can work out while waiting. For short stays, they don't clean the room daily. The air conditioning is excellent. The bathroom, however, doesn't have a wet/dry separation.

The hotel's location is excellent, with a subway station right outside the door and another line a few hundred meters away that goes to Chinatown. It's about an 800-meter walk to the Fort Canning tree tunnel (a popular photo spot), and from there you can continue on to the Old Hill Street Police Station (also known as the Rainbow Police Station), Clarke Quay, and the Merlion. The room size is a definite advantage compared to other hotels in the same price range; there's plenty of space to walk even with two large suitcases. The bathroom size is standard as well. The downside is that the bathroom fixtures are quite old, and the shower is difficult to use. However, I was aware of this beforehand, so I was prepared, and given the other advantages, it's acceptable. The bedding is good, and the sofa is quite comfortable. Among the toiletries, only the shampoo, shower gel, and toothbrush weren't great; everything else was fine. The room has a kettle and comes with tea and coffee packets. There's also a water dispenser in the hallway where you can get iced or room temperature water. The hotel breakfast is decent, on par with business hotels in China. However, the service is excellent; they diligently restock drinks and food even at the last minute, even if there are only a few people dining. There are washing machines and dryers on the fourth floor, each costing 5 SGD, and you can get change for coins at the front desk. The commercial machines work very well; the dryer gets clothes completely dry in 40 minutes. There are also ironing facilities in the room. Overall, I recommend this hotel. If you have a higher budget, you might look elsewhere, but if you're looking for great value for money at this price point, you should definitely consider it.

The room was very clean and tidied daily. It's very close to the subway station, with plenty of dining and shopping options nearby. The only downside is that the rooms facing the road can be a bit noisy, as the ICA building is right opposite. Transportation is very convenient, and the hotel front desk staff speaks a little Chinese. The view from the window was also nice.

I had been here several times, staying at both wings. I like the pool. This time, like the previous time..the wifi wasn’t working well but this time, it has caused some “major” issues and inconvenience! I can’t be reached for hours! I called reception for help and eventually they sent staff to my room to settle the issue for me! Thankful and grateful for that. All the rest are good for a short stay.

I requested for checking out at 1.00pm the next day and told the staff to take note so that their other staff would be aware as well. They said that it would be noted in the system.
