Classic Shanghai Must-dos:

1. Stroll along Wukang Road, immerse yourself in Shanghai’s history and culture, and admire the charm of old Western-style houses. This is the ultimate spot for photos! You’ll find plenty of people capturing memories here—haha! 📸Come take stunning pictures and share them on Instagram. There are many cafes and unique shops nearby, though the prices are on the higher side.

2. Take a Huangpu River night cruise, experience Shanghai’s history and dazzling skyline on its wide waters. As I sat on the boat, a song came to mind: Night Shanghai~ Night Shanghai~you are a city that never sleeps…🤩

3. My top pick for a must-visit museum! 👍Visit the Shanghai Museum, you can explore Shanghai’s development history and even take part in some interesting activities.

4. Spend a magical day at Shanghai Disneyland, having fun with Mickey, Minnie, and your favorite Disney characters. Here, we have the chance to relive our childhood and meet the animated characters from our memories! Enjoy thrilling roller coasters!😜

5. Visit the Shanghai Wild Animal Park and enjoy a joyful time with adorable animals. There are lots of animals here, making it a perfect place to bring kids for a fun time!

6. Explore the Shanghai Botanical Garden, admire the blooming flowers, and embrace the romantic vibes of spring.

7. Indulge in local delicacies at Chenghuang Temple Food Street, and experience the charm of Shanghai’s nightlife. Here’s a little tips👀: the snacks at the beginning of the alley are more expensive, but the farther you go, the cheaper they get!🥰

8. Shop at Nanjing East Road Pedestrian Street. This is known as a shopping paradise. Walking down Nanjing Road, I really get that feeling of the city lights just coming on. There’s so much delicious food and fun to be had, I feel like my wallet might go bankrupt!🤣

In addition to these classic tourist spots, let me share a few special activities with you:

1. "Sleep No More" – An Immersive Theater Experience

  • A 3-hour interactive performance with no dialogue, relying solely on actors' body language and dramatic intensity.

2. Candor – A Vintage-Themed Immersive Show & Party

  • A 2-hour show divided into 3-4 segments, each lasting around 20 minutes, followed by a 20-minute break before the next act.
  • The Babylon-themed performance I attended featured six performers, with lots of audience interaction.
  • At the end of the show, the audience is invited on stage to dance, making it a super fun and immersive experience!!!

You can also try bike-sharing, which is affordable and convenient, allowing you to pick up and drop off bikes as you go.

Best Time to Visit Shanghai – Based on Experience, Weather & Cost

If you're planning a trip to Shanghai, the best times to visit in terms of weather, crowd levels, and cost-effectiveness are:

1️⃣ Mid-to-late March to April (excluding the Qingming Festival holiday)
2️⃣ May, after the Labor Day holiday
3️⃣ Mid-to-late October to November, after the National Day holiday
4️⃣ September, after the summer break when students return to school

Why These Periods?

  • Comfortable weather – Not too hot or too cold, making it pleasant for outdoor activities.
  • Fewer crowds – You won’t have to deal with overwhelming tourist crowds, making sightseeing more enjoyable.
  • Better experience – You’ll have more flexibility to visit attractions without long wait times.
  • Lower costs – Accommodation and transportation prices are more reasonable compared to peak holiday seasons.

Of course, Shanghai is a great destination year-round, as it has a mild climate without extreme cold or heat. Even during peak seasons, as long as you enjoy the trip and find value in the experience, your journey will be meaningful and fulfilling! 🚀✨

Shanghai Travel Tips You Should Know!

What should I pay attention to when traveling to Shanghai for the first time?

The Bund lights up at 7 PM and turns off at 11 PM. If you're short on time, a cruise is a great option.

Stay near Nanjing Road – It's food heaven, and it's super convenient to reach all major attractions.

Avoid taking taxis in Shanghai – Traffic jams and parking are a hassle. The metro is fast, affordable, and covers almost all tourist spots.

Hongqiao Airport is closer to downtown, while Pudong Airport is closer to Disneyland. For high-speed trains, choose Shanghai Railway Station or Hongqiao Railway Station.

Jing’an Temple lights up only on Fridays, Saturdays, and national holidays, starting at 6 PM (but in hot weather, it might light up at 7 PM instead).

Visit Wukang Mansion in the morning for fewer crowds. Afterward, explore Tian’ai Road, Huaihai Middle Road, and Yuyuan Road for a relaxing walk.

For Disneyland, check for "Early Bird" tickets at least 10 days in advance. If you're staying overnight, Xujiahui is a great option—Metro Line 11 takes you directly to the park!

I highly recommend this hotel and was very impressed with my stay. The breakfast was wonderful, especially the stir-fried vegetables, which were delicious. I would like to give special thanks to Iris Zheng for her excellent care and for arranging a very comfortable room for us. The housekeeping staff on the 7th floor also provided outstanding service. If we return to Shanghai, we will definitely stay at this hotel again.

This is my second time staying here. The hotel staffs are very friendly and helpful. They try their best to accommodate us in all aspects. I bought a pair of shoes that would be delivered to the hotel on the next day, I informed the concierge and they thoroughly went through details of the expected parcel to prevent errors and miscommunication with the delivery. The next day when my parcel arrived, the concierge called and make sure the parcel delivering was the correct one for me. As for the house keeping, they noticed that we drank all 4 bottles of complimentary water everyday and from our 3rd day of staying onward they gave us 6 bottles without our request. Not to mention that I accidentally spilled milk over my bed in the rush, I informed the front desk before we headed out and they enthusiastically told me not to worry they would send the house keeper to change my bed sheet right away. In the morning of our last day, Oliver from the front desk called to confirm our check out and informed that hotel’s check out time was twelve noon. They also asked how many luggage we had and what time would we want the concierge to come collect them which I told them to come up around 11am, and at 11am sharp they rang on my door. Oliver from the front desk came along with the concierge, accompanied us down and helped us through the check out process and luggage deposit. Around 1:30 pm when we came back from lunch, our luggage was ready for us to pick up and headed out to the airport.

This is one of the best hotel in Shanghai thanks to its location, its amazing garden, and the architectural heritage (the ground floor/lobby if the former French Club that operated until 1949). I only have positive comments to make on the hotel itself and its staff. Yet, travelers should be aware that despite its name (Okura), it is no longer run by the original Japanese company, but by the Jinjiang Group, a state-backed entity. The reason I mention this is that during my last stay, Shanghai hosted the 8th International Import Exhibition. Since some foreign luminaries has booked rooms in this hotel, it became at once and for 5 days a military camp. All the gates were closed and closely monitored. Metal detectors were installed in the entrance and security check was mandatory (including body scan when one beeped under the metal detectors). No matter how many times a guest went out, even for a short strol in the garden, going though the metal detectors was mandatory. The lobby was full of policemen, undoubtedly courteous, but still an overblown presence. The hotel admitted that as a government-backed hotel, they had to comply with any demand by the authorities. So if you plan to book a room in this hotel, make sure that no big event will be held during your stay. Contact the hotel beforehand.

This was my first stay at a Pullman hotel, and the environment was really good. It's conveniently located with Shanghai Station right across the street. The facilities are comprehensive and still quite new, and the daily housekeeping was very thorough. What really stood out, though, were the staff; they were incredibly kind and enthusiastic. I arrived very late one evening to check in, and Ms. Beverly at the front desk was exceptional. I mentioned I wasn't sure about the room type, and she actually took me to see it, showing great consideration for the guest and a high level of professionalism. I stayed here for about half a month, and Beverly left a very lasting impression on me.

Highly recommended. Mr. Li provided outstanding service throughout my stay. He helped me with multiple things, including changing rooms and finding items I needed. My Chinese isn’t very good, but he always listened carefully and communicated in a way I could understand. What impressed me most was that he assisted me right away even at midnight when I needed to change rooms. He genuinely gives his best to every guest. The hotel does have a few minor downsides and some facilities were a bit broken, and it’s slightly far from the subway but the excellent service made my stay truly memorable.

Today is my last day at The Westin Bund Center Shanghai. At first, I loved the hotel, but unfortunately, the experience has slowly deteriorated. Before arrival, I had tried emailing ************************* to make a small request to celebrate an anniversary, but the email failed to deliver with an error saying the recipient’s server didn’t recognize certain characters. I’m not sure why, as the email was in English and sent from my phone. At check-in, I mentioned this to the receptionist (his name started with “C”), who was very polite and spoke to the lady behind him, asking her to reach out to Angela to assist. He then told me to head to my room and assured me I would be contacted. I waited for an hour in the room with no update, so I went out hoping to find a message upon my return, but sadly, there was still nothing. The email issue could have been my fault, and that is fine. But what is unacceptable is being promised a follow-up for such a special occasion and then never receiving it. For a hotel of this standard, I expected better communication and service consistency. Later, my son lost part of his toy, which led me to start searching around the room. While doing so, I discovered dust under every cabinet. Worse, I found what looked like someone else’s cream bottle stuck between the bed and the dresser. This makes me believe that the bottom part of the bed sheet was not changed, as housekeeping would almost certainly have noticed such an item if the bed had been properly stripped and remade. I have stayed in many Marriott properties, and this is the first time I would give only 2–3 stars. :(

Booked a collection executive room and was very happy with my room on the 29th floor with the most perfect view on Shanghai's skyline. Hotel is perfectly located on the Nanjing East road in the very center of Shanghai. Hotel itself and rooms are a bit worn out - need renovation in the nearest future but room was immaculately clean and provided with fresh bottled water every day. Breakfast was very good - both chinese and western. cuisine provided, lot of fruit, pastry and very good coffee. Special thanks to the executive lounge manager Annie who is the most friendly and helpful lady with perfect knowledge of english language. During the happy hours and afternoon tea time Ms. Annie explained clearly all the choices of food served and the beverages.

I reserved a twin room, which turned out to be quite spacious. I was fortunate to receive a corner room, though it was situated a considerable distance from the elevator. The staff were very pleasant and offered us a warm welcome. Complimentary water bottles were available for guests to take as needed. The room was immaculate, and the facilities were excellent, including an automatic toilet similar to those found in Japan, a powerful hairdryer, and various amenities. The location is also superb, being very close to Nanjing Road and the metro station. Overall, I'm recommend this hote.

Review: The Langham Shanghai — Still Well-Located, But No Longer the Same The Langham Shanghai has long been one of my preferred hotels, especially before the pandemic. After many stays, I’ve come to expect a certain standard of hospitality, consistency, and refinement. This recent visit, however, showed a noticeable decline across several areas. Service Overall service from the staff was acceptable. Front-line employees remained polite and tried their best. However, the manager on duty—a Caucasian manager—felt out of touch with Asian hospitality norms. His attitude came off as dismissive and rude, which immediately set the wrong tone. The contrast between the staff’s warmth and his behavior was striking. Breakfast Buffet The most significant drop was in the breakfast buffet. Quality has slipped in a way that’s hard to ignore: food didn’t taste as fresh, dishes weren’t as well prepared, and the overall selection felt uninspired compared to previous years. At this point, it’s honestly better to go out for breakfast. Room & Housekeeping Room cleanliness was fine, but small inconsistencies added up. Turn-down service was missed on some nights. When I requested water refill, the staff who arrived seemed confused about why she had been sent up, leading to an awkward exchange. These are small moments, but in a five-star hotel, they highlight cracks in training and coordination. Overall Impression The Langham Shanghai still has one unbeatable strength: location. But nearly everything else has declined—food, consistency, management attitude, and attention to detail. After years of loyalty, I’m now considering switching to a different hotel for future trips. The experience simply didn’t match the standards I’ve known and trusted from The Langham brand. A disappointing stay from a once-reliable favorite.

The hotel's location is unbeatable – a 3-minute walk to East Nanjing Road subway station, and 5 minutes directly to The Bund. All the shopping, dining, and entertainment you could want are right at your doorstep. Plus, you can store your luggage, which is so convenient for tourists! Even more surprisingly, the front desk proactively upgraded us to a larger room for free! The room was spacious and bright, with decor that blended old Shanghai charm with modern simplicity. I particularly want to praise the bathroom's wet and dry separation – a huge practical bonus! There's even an old-fashioned iron, which is a major plus for anyone needing to press clothes.

Perfect service, perfect view, hahaha! After booking the hotel, Lorna quickly contacted me and helped me with all sorts of things, big and small. She's so lovely and responsible! Keep up the good work! I think this view is the best angle to see the Bund, even better than the Seagull on the Bund! The orange juice at the Executive Lounge is delicious. When they ran out of orange juice in the morning, Miki even managed to get me a glass, thumbs up! Bruce, our butler, provided exceptional service. Because we had a small baby, he helped us arrange an early check-in and a late check-out. In the evening, he even brought us pine nut cakes, which was a very thoughtful gesture. The hotel itself is very distinctive, with spacious and comfortable rooms. Is the third time that we stay at this hotel an it never disappoints. Is the perfect hotel if you want to stay near Hongqiao station or the airport and it has plenty of dining options around and things to do. The line 2 takes you straight away to the city center and to PVG airport if needed, but bear in mind that PVG airport is very far from here. The hotel breakfast is well balanced with many options, both local and western. The service, gym, pool and amenities are on point. Spacious rooms, nicely cleaned and comfortable. I stayed here for one night. I came here after leaving another hotel that wasn't good. I'm so glad that I came here instead. I really got such a good night's sleep. One of the hotel staff, Ekko, was extra helpful in answering my questions in English, allowing me to stay longer in the lobby while I waited for my friend and even offered me a bottle of water. He was very welcoming! The the bed is so comfortable and soft and the hotel is very clean. And the breakfast is also delicious. You also have a vending machine on the first floor that takes digital payment and a mini refrigerator in your room. There's also a smart TV with HDMI and screen mirroring. It's great value for money and it's also just a really comfortable place to stay. The interior design is really beautiful and eclectic. I think you'll have fun just hanging out in the lobby, good music playing, for a couple hours doing some work at one of the many sitting areas in the lobby, if you're a digital nomad like me. As a business traveler with a packed schedule, I'm taking advantage of a rare free moment today to praise this hotel apartment. This was our first stay at Citadines Gubei. The lobby is spacious and bright, and front desk staff member Wei Kaijie greeted us with a friendly smile, showing us the guest rooms and providing a detailed overview of the apartment's facilities. Manager Fu Renjie is highly competent. We stayed in room 1752 on the 17th floor, and the housekeeping staff there are very meticulous, especially Liu Gaiqin, who has an excellent service attitude. She diligently cleans our room and bathroom daily and promptly replenishes our amenities. The hotel breakfast is very generous, and for takeout orders, a robot delivers them directly to the room door. What truly sets this hotel apart, and what I haven't experienced in other hotels, is that the front desk staff go above and beyond their own duties to deliver guests' packages directly to their room doors. This made us feel incredibly welcome and at home. We will definitely be staying here again on our next trip.

The hotel's location is excellent, making it very convenient for my mom's class reunion. Her classmates, all in their eighties, met up on Nanjing Road, enjoying a quiet spot amidst the bustling city. There are plenty of local eateries and restaurants nearby, so you can easily find food right outside. My mom was very satisfied with her solo trip this time.

During the off-peak May Day holiday, the first choice for an outing to Sheshan is Kaiyuan Mingting! The hotel lobby is spacious and bright, the front desk Xiaoqian is warm and thoughtful, the check-in procedure is efficient and convenient, and the business king room with a large terrace is upgraded for free. The room is clean and comfortable. When I saw the children, I took the initiative to provide children's supplies. There are many plugs in the room, which is very convenient. The network speed is also very fast. It is suitable for business and parents. The hotel is next to Qingpu Sam's Club, which is very convenient for shopping. It takes 20 minutes to drive to Sheshan Forest Park. Overall, the overall experience exceeded expectations, and I will choose here next time!
