You can also try bike-sharing, which is affordable and convenient, allowing you to pick up and drop off bikes as you go.

Best Time to Visit Shanghai – Based on Experience, Weather & Cost

If you're planning a trip to Shanghai, the best times to visit in terms of weather, crowd levels, and cost-effectiveness are:

1️⃣ Mid-to-late March to April (excluding the Qingming Festival holiday)
2️⃣ May, after the Labor Day holiday
3️⃣ Mid-to-late October to November, after the National Day holiday
4️⃣ September, after the summer break when students return to school

Why These Periods?

  • Comfortable weather – Not too hot or too cold, making it pleasant for outdoor activities.
  • Fewer crowds – You won’t have to deal with overwhelming tourist crowds, making sightseeing more enjoyable.
  • Better experience – You’ll have more flexibility to visit attractions without long wait times.
  • Lower costs – Accommodation and transportation prices are more reasonable compared to peak holiday seasons.

Of course, Shanghai is a great destination year-round, as it has a mild climate without extreme cold or heat. Even during peak seasons, as long as you enjoy the trip and find value in the experience, your journey will be meaningful and fulfilling! 🚀✨

Shanghai Travel Tips You Should Know!

What should I pay attention to when traveling to Shanghai for the first time?

The Bund lights up at 7 PM and turns off at 11 PM. If you're short on time, a cruise is a great option.

Stay near Nanjing Road – It's food heaven, and it's super convenient to reach all major attractions.

Avoid taking taxis in Shanghai – Traffic jams and parking are a hassle. The metro is fast, affordable, and covers almost all tourist spots.

Hongqiao Airport is closer to downtown, while Pudong Airport is closer to Disneyland. For high-speed trains, choose Shanghai Railway Station or Hongqiao Railway Station.

Jing’an Temple lights up only on Fridays, Saturdays, and national holidays, starting at 6 PM (but in hot weather, it might light up at 7 PM instead).

Visit Wukang Mansion in the morning for fewer crowds. Afterward, explore Tian’ai Road, Huaihai Middle Road, and Yuyuan Road for a relaxing walk.

For Disneyland, check for "Early Bird" tickets at least 10 days in advance. If you're staying overnight, Xujiahui is a great option—Metro Line 11 takes you directly to the park!

One word. Excellent. Marvellous customer service. Service orientated hotel. Location is good too as it’s located exactly at nanjing pedestrian street with access to metro line 2. Special credit to Justin Wu during my check in. Fast check in and voluntarily upgraded us even without us requesting. Kudos for great attentive attitude. We were also given late check out as my flight back is late at night. Appreciate his understanding. Smooth check out process too especially with a sweet young beautiful lady named starry cui. Can converse well in English too. Gave us a complimentary plushie which makes a great memorable gift. Will definitely stay in crowne plaza if I am to drop by Shanghai again

This year, we decided to book our New Year's Eve dinner at the Radisson, and to save ourselves the hassle of traveling back and forth, we decided to stay there as well. JUDY called me a day in advance to ask about my room preferences, which eased my anxiety and built up my anticipation for the stay. We booked a Deluxe Suite, facing south towards People's Park, offering a really great view. The room was very tidy, with a living room and bedroom, and a standard double bathroom with both a shower and a bathtub, but no bidet. Although the hotel isn't new, it's clear that the room facilities are very well-maintained. The shower brand is Radisson's own, and it worked quite well. Room service is also worth mentioning; their response time was very quick, and they offered turndown service. We also received complimentary welcome fruits. The hotel's location is excellent. You don't even need to go outside to access New World City directly, making shopping and dining very convenient. We had lunch on the 8th and 9th floors of New World City for the past few days. Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is right outside. On New Year's Eve, we went to Nanjing Road and the Bund, experiencing Shanghai's New Year's atmosphere up close, which was a rare treat. The breakfast was very plentiful, and I was pleasantly surprised to find my favorite crystal cakes. The lack of free parking was a bit unexpected. While it might be due to the location, other hotels I've stayed at recently, like the Conrad and Peace Hotel, also have excellent locations but offer free parking. However, the parking garage entrance is very narrow, and the turns are quite tight, which could be challenging for less-skilled drivers. So, it's probably best not to drive if you can avoid it. This was my first stay at a Radisson Group hotel, and it left a very positive impression on me.

It's super close to Nanjing Road, The Bund, Shanghai Museum, Natural History Museum, and Yu Garden, making it incredibly convenient for family trips exploring the city. The twin beds in the room were perfect for families with kids. A special shout-out to Manager Xiao Ma at the front desk – his service was incredibly warm and efficient. The location is superb and incredibly convenient. The service is warm and friendly, and the staff's attitude is excellent. It's a vintage hotel with a touch of Shanghainese charm. They were incredibly responsive to all my needs; whether it was the cleaning staff on my floor or the service staff in the executive lounge, everyone provided immense help during my stay! I highly recommend this old-school hotel. While the facilities are a bit dated, they are very well-maintained. It's also worth noting that some floors are undergoing renovation, so you might want to inquire about that before checking in. Oh, and you absolutely must try the breakfast; it's really delicious, especially the scallion pancake with egg!

Full marks to the front desk service at Pullman Shanghai Jing'an! The entire experience was professional, efficient, and thoughtful, truly reflecting the high standards of a luxury hotel. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly and guided through the check-in process seamlessly. The staff were gentle, polite, and patiently answered all my questions about room types, facilities, and local transportation. Their attention to detail was exceptional. They also responded promptly and handled any last-minute requests with great service awareness, making me feel at ease and comfortable from the moment I arrived. The front desk team as a whole displayed high professionalism and a smooth workflow, with absolutely no perfunctory service. They truly made me feel at home. With its excellent location, great facilities, and such outstanding service, this will be my first choice again next time. Highly recommended!

The hotel’s location is very good. It is about a 5-minute walk to a huge Starbucks, Nanjing West Road, the MRT station, and Wujiang Road, which has several nice bakeries and food options. This made getting around very convenient. There was also a 7-11 just across the road. However, the Premier Two-Bedroom Suite was disappointing for the price paid. The rooms are rather small, especially the master bedroom, where there was not enough space to place or open any luggage. We had to keep our luggage in the living room instead. The bathroom, particularly the shower area, looked very dated. The tiles appeared old and there was a musty smell, which was unpleasant. Another inconvenience was that the light switches were only on one side of the bed, making it very inconvenient to switch off the lights from the other side. The kitchenette was also very small. Cutlery was stored in a drawer above the bin, which was not ideal, and there were no extra plates provided. The tiles looked old with visible cracks, and some of the drawers were faulty. Overall, the room did not feel premium and felt overpriced for what was offered. The hotel rooms clearly need a glow-up to match the Kempinski brand and the rates charged. Additionally, the reception area was undergoing renovation, with no seating or waiting area. The pick-up and drop-off driveway is very narrow, only a small lane. When loading our luggage, we had to do so very quickly as other cars were waiting. The driveway would benefit from being more spacious. While the location is excellent, the room condition, layout, and facilities did not meet expectations for a Premier suite.

I really love the name of this hotel so I booked 3 nights without hesitation. What surprised me is that we have been upgraded (our room is on 12th floor) and the view of the room can see the bund clearly just from the window of our room. For the service, you could feel really warm-welcomed and the staffs are really patient. By the way, the restaurant on 7th floor is worth to be tried. I bet you won’t regret if you choose this hotel.

The hotel was easy enough to find for a hotel the has a reception on the 4th floor and no signage out front. The location is prime for access to the pedestrian road. Lots of sightseeing and shopping in this area. Short drive to all the key tourist hotspots. Beds were comfortable, staff were great to foreigners like us, breakfast was fine. The only thing of notes was we had no luck using the dryers and resorted to hanging out our clothes in our room. But this is a minor issue and may be operator error. We would stay at the Yitel premium again.

The location is super central and convenient for getting anywhere. The staff honestly told us that the Oriental Pearl TV Tower view was partially obstructed, but it was still stunning. They even provided disposable bath liners and milk bath packets for the bathtub. Xiao Wu was incredibly helpful, always answering our questions promptly and efficiently. A big thank you to Xiao Wu! The only minor issue was the front desk male staff member's insincere expression when we checked in at 6 PM on January 12th, which made us feel a bit uncomfortable. However, the front desk staff who checked us in late at night were very friendly despite the late hour. Overall, the staff's attitude was excellent! The hotel definitely has some age, but the TV was smart, and the breakfast was refreshing and cozy. All in all, a good experience!

Overall Experience: My stay was defined by a feeling of tranquil escape. The hotel's greatest strength is its atmosphere. Being in a historic building tucked away in a quiet, leafy neighborhood just off the famous Nanjing Road created a perfect balance. I could easily walk to the buzz and shopping, but returned each time to a serene, garden-filled sanctuary. It felt more like a peaceful retreat than a standard city hotel. Service: The service was consistently attentive and polite. Staff were professional and quick to help with requests. The check-in and check-out process was smooth. While the service wasn't overly familiar, it was reliably good and matched the hotel's calm, understated style. I felt well taken care of. Facilities: The facilities are well curated but compact, focusing on quality over quantity.

The room was quite spacious and very close to the subway station (Jing'an Temple, Exit 12, right next door). The elevator was also fast. I stayed at the Jinjiang Metropolo Hotel Classiq Shanghai Nanjing Road during the Chinese New Year holiday, and my overall experience was excellent. Both the location and service were outstanding, and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Shanghai. The hotel boasts a prime location, just a 10-minute walk along Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street to the Bund and Yuxingji (People's Square branch). This made sightseeing and enjoying local cuisine incredibly convenient. It's also only a minute's walk from Nanjing East Road Metro Station, making it super easy to get around the city. Downstairs, there are plenty of specialty restaurants offering a wide variety of choices, making meals hassle-free. The hotel's buffet breakfast offered a rich selection and delicious food, catering to different tastes. My room was clean and tidy, with soft and comfortable bedding and excellent soundproofing, ensuring a high quality of rest. The front desk staff were warm and attentive. Big shout out to the housekeeping staff! The coffee machine was broken, and two of them actively helped me sort it out. Now, for the breakfast department, I have a big complaint! 😡 Because I had an early train to catch the next day, I specifically ordered a takeaway breakfast the night before. But when I got to the station, bumpy ride and all, I opened the breakfast bag and was speechless. Inside was a bruised pear, a cup of black coffee, and three identical, dry croissants! Even McDonald's knows to pack sugar and milk with coffee – do you five-star hotels not? With so many Western and Chinese options for breakfast, I only get three stale croissants? No fresh fruit? Guests are expected to eat fruit that's almost rotten?! I've stayed at many five-star hotels, and this packed breakfast quality is even worse than a Hampton Inn! 😤😠🤬

Facilities: The bathroom sink wasn't very practical; water splashed everywhere easily. Environment: The breakfast area and lobby bar are shared and quite small. Service: The hotel service was really good. The front desk staff, especially Loretta, were very professional. She deserves a huge commendation – even on her days off, she'd message me to say I could reach out to her anytime if I needed anything. The concierge service was also excellent, promptly anticipating guests' needs, making both check-in and check-out very smooth. Housekeeping was great too; turndown service was always done by the time I returned to my room. Breakfast is a crucial indicator of a hotel's quality, reflecting its attention to detail and standards through its offerings and quality control. After I spoke with the hotel, there was an improvement the next day. The bakery items were truly outstanding; the pastries were perfectly flaky, and both the pancakes and waffles were delicious. The fried dishes also had a great texture.

Stayed at the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, also known as the 'Deep Pit Hotel,' during 'Xiao Nian' (Minor New Year). Located 88 meters below ground, it's a truly unique architectural marvel, recognized as one of the world's top ten architectural wonders – a definite must-see! The check-in process was incredibly smooth; we were able to get into our room before 12 PM. Every bed in the room faces the deep pit, and the balcony is spacious. From there, you can see a waterfall, a pool of water at the bottom of the pit, and the Ferris wheel, skywalk, and bungee jumping at the Deep Pit Shimao Wonderland amusement park across the way. You can even lie in bed and enjoy the waterfall view. The room amenities are excellent, with a shower and bathtub, and a well-designed wet/dry separation. Overall, the facilities are top-notch, and the breakfast is plentiful. The real-time cliff light and shadow show at night is particularly impressive and spectacular. Drawing inspiration from the 'Classic of Mountains and Seas,' it showcases unique oriental mythical stories. The butler service was outstanding. I lost my ID when I visited the Wonderland park the day before, and our butler, Bruce, was incredibly proactive in helping me search for it. He found it the very next day, which was a huge help. This is our re-visit of the hotel. I don’t know why, but it just felt homey instantly (usually it will take me a night to get used to the room), it’s just comfortable with peaceful ambiance and soft lighting. The breakfast was amazing and it really helped to start our day in a pleasant way! We also had a pleasant interaction with the room-service robot who delivered bottle water to our room twice 😄 You just had to try it!!! too bad I couldn’t hug the robot 😄 I also like the Hotel’s good and combined use of technology and human service. I called from the room to ask for bottle water, and it was answered by a lady who said they will send a Robot to deliver. (In another hotel, I also made a call from the room with a small request, but it was an auto answer where you had to talk to a machine and dial the numbers when prompted, which often ended in frustration). Other than that, just one suggestion, I thought the quality of the toiletries and slippers provided could be better compared to the peer hotels, yea, especially for the slippers, they felt too synthetic compared to the slippers from the other two hotels I stayed at during this travel. Overall, great stay, pleasant experience and will revisit!

This hotel is perfectly suited to my taste. The lobby is predominantly decorated in black and red, with even the glass panels featuring a red tint. The lobby area is incredibly spacious, boasting many distinct seating zones, which made me feel like I could spend an entire day just lounging there. The hotel is conveniently located right next to a large shopping mall, MixC City, offering a wide array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Plus, it's just a few subway stops from either the train station or the airport. Getting to the hotel from Ziteng Road Metro Station: exit and enter the shopping mall through its main illuminated entrance. For the most straightforward path, *before* you reach the pedestrian street of the metro commercial area, follow the signs to take the elevator up to the second floor. From there, walk through the parking lot between Buildings A and B, and you'll arrive directly at the hotel, with no stairs to navigate. Overall, I feel the hotel's marketing efforts are insufficient. This hidden gem truly deserves to be discovered by more people.

The room facilities are complete and well-equipped, with a refrigerator, washing machine, and microwave all available, which is very convenient for long business trips. The front desk staff are warm and friendly, and the housekeeping staff clean very promptly and meticulously, always accommodating requests.

The hotel is conveniently located near Nanjing Street, making it easy to get around and explore the area. There is a convenience store close by, which is very handy for quick purchases. For Muslim travelers, there is a halal restaurant nearby called Nizam, which is a big plus. The room was quite small and really only suitable for sleeping. The walls are not soundproof, so noise can be an issue—light sleepers may find it uncomfortable. Overall, it’s an okay option for a short stay if location is your priority

The location of the hotel is very good, next to the Sam Hotel, but it is very quiet. The whole hotel is a building, surrounded by a small river and opposite a park. It is very quiet, the environment is very good, the hygiene is very clean, and there is a fragrance as soon as you enter the door. The hotel service is great, the receptionist Xiao Liu is very enthusiastic, the facilities are complete, the underground parking lot is large, the breakfast is a Chinese and Western buffet, there are also full meals at noon and in the evening, and there is a barbecue next to it in the evening.
