Let’s dive into the best things you can do in Miri — experiences that’ll leave you refreshed and craving more Sarawak adventures! 🌴✨

🌟 Top Must-Do Things in Miri

1. Explore Mulu National Park – A Different World Underground 🏞️

Canopy walk of Gunung Mulu National Park
Cave entrance for Gunung Mulu caves

Nature lovers, this is your playground.
Gunung Mulu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to some of the world's largest and longest cave systems.

Walking into the Sarawak Chamber feels like stepping into another universe — it’s so massive, it could fit forty Boeing 747s! 😲
You’ll be in awe of the sheer size and beauty of the caves, the cool underground atmosphere, and the rich biodiversity.

Things you can do:

● Easy guided tours to Deer Cave and Lang Cave

● Walk across the world’s longest canopy skywalk

● Go on adventurous spelunking tours if you’re feeling brave

Tip: Book your tours early — they limit visitor numbers to protect the environment.

2. Relax at Tusan Beach – Sunset Dreams 🌅

View of Tusan beach

If you love beautiful beaches, Tusan Beach is a must-visit.
It’s famous for the Horse Head Rock formation — yes, it literally looks like a horse drinking from the sea! 🐎

And if you visit during the right season (March to September), you might even catch the magical Blue Tears — glowing plankton lighting up the shoreline at night.
It’s one of the most surreal natural phenomena you’ll ever see.

Perfect for:

● Sunset lovers

● Photographers

● Couples looking for a quiet romantic spot

3. Visit Canada Hill & The Grand Old Lady – A Piece of History 🛢️🏙️

The grand old lady mining rig

Want a little bit of history with your view?

Canada Hill is where Malaysia’s first oil well was drilled in 1910.
Standing proudly there is the Grand Old Lady — Miri’s iconic monument to its petroleum roots.

From the top of the hill, you’ll get stunning panoramic views of Miri city and the coastline, especially at sunset. There’s also a Petroleum Museum where you can learn how oil changed Sarawak’s history.

4. Stroll Through Miri Handicraft Centre – Local Treasures 🛍️

A central place for all things hanidcrafts in Miri

No trip is complete without souvenirs!

Miri Handicraft Centre is the perfect spot to pick up:

● Beaded jewelry handmade by the Orang Ulu community

● Traditional woven baskets and mats

● Pua Kumbu (traditional Iban woven cloth)

● Unique Bornean crafts and home décor

It’s also a lovely experience to see artisans working on their crafts right there in the market.

5. Go Island Hopping to Luconia Shoals – A Diver’s Paradise 🐠🌊

Diving in luconia coast

If you love diving, Luconia Shoals is a hidden gem you absolutely shouldn’t miss.

Located about an hour’s boat ride from Miri, it’s part of the South China Sea and boasts:

● Clear turquoise waters

● Colorful coral reefs

● Rich marine life (think turtles, reef sharks, and more)

It’s not as touristy as Semporna, which means you get a lot more privacy and pristine waters to explore.

6. Chill at Coco Cabana – Seaside Vibes and Art 🎨🌴

🌿 Hidden Gems & Local Secrets in Miri

Miri isn’t just about its famous spots. Some of the best adventures happen when you explore a little deeper. Here are some hidden gems you shouldn’t miss:

1. Lambir Hills National Park – Mini Adventure, Maximum Reward 🏞️

Canopy walk around the rainforest

If Gunung Mulu feels a bit too hardcore, Lambir Hills National Park is a fantastic alternative that’s much closer to Miri town — about 30 minutes’ drive only!

This place is a hiker’s dream, with:

● Lush rainforest trails

● Scenic waterfalls (some you can swim in!)

● Rich birdlife and even flying squirrels if you’re lucky 🐿️

The hike to the main waterfall, Latak Waterfall, is manageable even if you're not super fit. And trust me, nothing feels better than jumping into a cool pool after a humid jungle trek.

Pro tip: Bring mosquito repellent, lots of water, and maybe an extra change of clothes — you’ll want to take a dip!

2. Niah Caves – Step Back in Time to Prehistoric Borneo 🦴

Interior of Niah Caves

For a truly "Indiana Jones" kind of day, Niah Caves is an absolute must.

Located about 1.5 hours from Miri, Niah is famous because archaeologists discovered human remains here dating back over 40,000 years!
When you walk through the massive caves and see ancient cave paintings, you really feel like you’re stepping into history.

Highlights include:

The Great Cave — unbelievably huge and atmospheric

The Painted Cave — home to ancient drawings on the walls

● Watching local bird’s nest collectors scaling the cave walls (still happening today!)

It’s slightly more rugged than Mulu, but so much richer in "wow" moments.

Tip: Wear proper walking shoes — parts of the cave trail can be slippery.

3. Bekenu Esplanade – The Slow Life by the Sea 🌊

Bekenu beach unique formataion of rocks

About 40 minutes from Miri town, Bekenu is a sleepy little fishing village that's perfect if you’re craving some real peace and quiet.

At the Bekenu Esplanade, you’ll find:

● Calm seaside vibes

● Friendly locals selling fresh seafood

● Golden hour sunsets that are seriously underrated

It's not fancy, but it’s one of those places that make you slow down and breathe properly again.
Great for an afternoon drive if you just want to "jalan-jalan" and clear your mind.

🍽️ What to Eat in Miri: Local Flavours You Can’t Miss

One thing’s for sure — you’ll never go hungry in Miri.
The food here is a beautiful reflection of Sarawak’s rich cultures: Malay, Chinese, Iban, Orang Ulu, Melanau, and more. Whether you're hunting for hearty noodles, fresh seafood, or unique Sarawakian specialties, Miri has plenty to offer.

Here’s a quick guide to what you absolutely must try:

1. Miri-Style Kolo Mee 🍜

Sarawak style kolo mee

Yes, you’ve heard of Kolo Mee in Kuching — but Miri’s version deserves its own spotlight.

Here, the noodles are slightly softer, and the sauce is a little more savoury compared to Kuching’s style.
It’s usually topped with minced pork, char siu slices, and a light sprinkle of green onions.

Best eaten:

● For breakfast

● With a side of iced kopi-o to start your day like a true local

Where to try:
Hop over to Yi Xiang Kolo Mee — locals swear by it!

2. Umai – Sarawak’s Fresh Seafood Delight 🐟

Umai - a seafood dish traditional to sarawak

Umai is a traditional Melanau dish that you must try if you love sashimi-style seafood.

It’s basically raw fish marinated in lime juice, chili, onions, and sometimes a little bit of salt and sugar. Super fresh, tangy, spicy — like an explosion of flavours with every bite.

Fun tip:
Ask if they have prawn umai too. Some places in Miri offer different versions!

Where to try:
Head to Awang Mahyan Cafe or find it at local markets like Tamu Muhibbah.

3. Kampua Mee 🍜

kampua mee a unique style of sarawakian kolo mee

Different from Kolo Mee but equally addictive, Kampua Mee is more straightforward — slightly oily, lightly flavoured with shallot oil, and served with slices of BBQ pork.

It’s the ultimate comfort food for many Sarawakians.

Where to try:
Go to Choon Kim Coffee Shop early in the morning for the real deal.

4. Fresh Seafood Feasts 🦐🦀

a feast of different types of seafood

Thanks to Miri’s coastal location, seafood here is crazy fresh and affordable.

You can feast on:

● Butter prawns

● Chili crabs

● Steamed fish with soy sauce

● Grilled squid

● Local shellfish like "lokan"

Where to go:
Seahorse Seafood Restaurant is a popular choice if you want a nice setting, but honestly, the seafood stalls along Tanjong Lobang area are just as good and way cheaper!

5. Kek Lapis Sarawak – Sweet Souvenir Heaven 🍰

a fantastic xpread of layer cakes

No Sarawak trip is complete without Kek Lapis (layer cake)!
Miri has tons of local bakers offering beautifully layered, colourful cakes in flavours like pandan, chocolate, and even durian.

Perfect to buy as souvenirs or makan sendiri during your trip. 🎁

Where to find:
Look out for local brands at Bintang Megamall or small stalls at the handicraft centre.

6. Night Market Adventures 🌙

A compilation of night market foods

If you want the real Malaysian makan experience, hit up Saberkas Night Market.

Every weekend, you’ll find:

● Grilled satay

● Fried chicken wings

● Sugarcane juice

● Lok Lok skewers

● Freshly made apam balik (the fluffy peanut pancake)

It’s loud, chaotic, smells amazing, and tastes even better — basically heaven for street food lovers.

Checked in at 3:30pm on a weekday and was told the room still wasn’t ready, which was disappointing considering it wasn’t a public holiday and the hotel didn’t appear particularly busy. After a long day of travelling, the last thing you expect is to wait around past check-in time with no proper explanation or urgency from staff. The facilities were another letdown. Went for a swim around 9:30am only to find the pool closed for cleaning during peak morning hours. The spa and steam room were also frustrating to use because we had to search for staff every single time just to get them switched on. It defeats the purpose of advertising these facilities if guests can’t conveniently access them when they want to relax. Overall, the hotel looks nice on the surface, but the service and management of the facilities really took away from the experience. For a Pullman hotel, I expected a much smoother and more premium stay.

Due to located at seaside, things getting wear and tear faster and rooms kind of rundown but still in acceptable condition. Food wise ordered chicken wings but tasted like no seasoning at all And pizza is also under baked. These basic food definitely needs to improve.

The hotel's location is excellent, right above a mall. It's also in the bustling city center. The front desk staff are friendly and welcoming. The room itself is good, too. My only complaint is that the air conditioning wasn't cold at all. We switched to a second room, and the AC was still just as warm. 🙄

The hotel location is very nice, located in the town center and there is a mall opposite. Need upgrade for the room, very old and run down. Those home appliances were aging and not clean. Can see some ants on the working desk as well.

Located middle of the city centrally but sadly nothing surrounding seems to be attractive to us. Hotel are old and requiring some maintenance. Swimming is small and crowded. Gyms are aging with squeaky noises and need urgent lubricants. WiFi was extremely poor and connection was very slow. Surprisingly breakfast was very good. Staff are friendly.

Overall, the stay itself was comfortable, and the room met expectations. The hotel's aesthetic is elegant and beautiful, and its location is convenient, surrounded by chinese restaurants within easy walking distance. The breakfast buffet was also good and enjoyable. However, the experience was unfortunately dampened by issues at the front desk, hygiene standards in the common areas, and soundproofing. We arrived around 10am and requested an early check-in, fully understanding that the standard check-in time is 2pm and that any earlier arrangement is subject to room availability and discretion. However, we were told by staff that early check-in would only be possible with an additional charge of RM160. This created an uncomfortable impression where it felt less like a matter of room availability and more like withholding an available room in order to impose extra charges. The tone suggests monetising convenience which we weren't particularly happy about. After checked-in around 5pm. we noticed dirty plates on the floor left near the lift area. What was more concerning was that these plates were still there in the same spot the next morning when we checked out. This raised questions about cleanliness and hygiene, especially in shared spaces. In addition, the soundproofing could be improved. Noise from children crying near the lift was clearly audible, and due to the hotel's proximity to the airport, airplane noise could also be heard. This may be a concern for light sleepers or guests seeking a quieter stay. While the room and overall stay were generally good, these experiences affected our impression.

Had a pleasant stay here. The room was clean, comfortable and well maintained, offering good value for money. The location is convenient, with plenty of food options and shops nearby. The hotel serves a simple yet delicious breakfast. I especially enjoyed the Chinese style dishes. The dining area was also comfortable and relaxing. Staff were friendly and helpful, and check in was smooth. One minor issue was the room air conditioning was extremely cold and difficult to adjust, so we had to turn it off during our stay. Overall, still a good choice for a comfortable and affordable stay in Miri. Would consider staying here again.

The cleanliness of the hotel surprised me, every part of the room is clean & comfy. Swimming pool & jacuzzi water were cold, it would be awesome if the jacuzzi water is hot. And in case you need extra pillow, they will make you pay for “renting” it.

Very good value hotel, located near the Bintang Mega Mall and local restaurants. Nice rooms big windows. Good shower, sink & wc. Working fridge, internet tv, kettle. Oddly, all the plug sockets - there are plenty - are on the TV side of the room. Lighting OK. A plug socket blew up on me, though the hotel quickly restored the power. Maintenance of loose & badly wired plug sockets needed Room #506. Staff good. Very nice hotel lobby with free copies of the day’s Borneo Post Bewspaper.

First of all, it's cheap for a family of 3 to stay there. Convenient location . But first impression we checked into the room is the smell from the toilet. It's very unpleasant. Secondly, there's still hair on the floor. So cleanliness is just average. Surprisingly, the bed and pillow is comfortable. We had good rest. The Aircond is cold too. Hot shower is okay. Need to know how to adjust. It gets too hot, then user has to keep adjusting it in one session. Well it's personal preference I guess. It's too hot for me. Maybe not for others. I'm sorry the photos are irrelevant. Captured during our drive from Sabah.

I had a pleasant stay overall and the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and clean. However, there were a few issues during my stay — two sets of power sockets in the room were not working, and the WiFi connection was quite unstable, with intermittent on-and-off connectivity. I hope these issues can be improved for future guests.

I booked for 2 queen sized bed for 4 person stay, but everytime only provide toiletries, water, drinks for 2 person only. Although they will provide upon request but it already created inconvenience to us. Besides that, the toilet water flow system very bad, all the water stuck at toilet after bath, got bad smell somemore, unfortunately after feedback to the hotel staff, they said memang like this, it is due to the floor problem, hope hotel can solve it instead of asking guest to accept it, a bit disgusting

Location is very good. Beautiful scenery from the apartment. Very strange and rigid rules. I knew 1 person from apartment was entitled to have free breakfast a day. I was given 3 breakfast coupons for 3 day stay but when I tried to have 3 persons from my family to have breakfast together for the same day, the receptionist bluntly refused. The conditions of each apartment we stayed was different. My sister had a 3 bed room unit with full utilities including dinning table and yet there was no wash basin for cups and plates. The bathroom sinks were leaking.

It was a 1hr drive from Miri city to the resort. The condition of Miri-Bintulu road was very challenging as its under major maintenance. We basically on 50km/hr. The resort is a good place for family get together esp when we have limited access to the internet & calls. There are a lot of physical activities you can do there in a group or solo. The resort tour included in the stay is a great exposure for kids to understand rainforest eco system.

✈️ Travel Tips for Visiting Miri

Before you pack your bags and get excited about beaches and caves, here are some quick tips to help you make the most out of your Miri trip:

1. Best Time to Visit 🌤️

Miri’s weather is generally hot and humid year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry season from March to October.

This is when:

● Beaches are prettier (blue skies, golden sunsets)

● Cave exploring is safer (less risk of slippery trails)

● Outdoor activities like hiking and island hopping are more enjoyable

Tip: Avoid the year-end monsoon (November to February) if you’re planning outdoor adventures.

2. Getting Around 🚗

Miri is quite spread out, and public transport isn’t super developed — but no worries, getting around is still easy.

Your options:

Car rental: Best if you want to explore national parks, beaches, and outskirts freely.

Grab (e-hailing app): Cheap and super convenient within the city itself.

Taxis: Available, but a bit more expensive than Grab.

Pro tip: If you’re planning trips to Lambir Hills, Niah Caves, or Tusan Beach, definitely consider renting a car. It’s way more flexible.

3. What to Pack 🎒

A few essentials to make your trip smoother:

Light, breathable clothing (it’s humid!)

Good walking shoes (especially for caves and hiking)

Bug repellent (trust me, especially for jungle treks)

Sunscreen and cap/hat (the sun can be really strong)

Waterproof bags if you plan to visit beaches or do island hopping

Nice to have: A small flashlight for cave walks or jungle hikes — sometimes your phone light just isn't strong enough!

4. Money Matters 💵

● Miri is still very much a cash-friendly place, especially at small stalls, markets, and outskirt areas.

● Major malls, hotels, and restaurants accept cards and e-wallets like Boost and GrabPay.

Tip: Always carry a little extra cash when venturing out of the city centre.

5. Respect Local Culture 🙏

Miri is wonderfully diverse — you’ll meet people from all backgrounds: Iban, Malay, Chinese, Orang Ulu, Melanau, and more.
Everyone is generally super friendly, but just a few reminders:

● Dress modestly when visiting villages or rural areas.

● Always ask before taking photos of locals, especially in traditional attire.

● Try a few words in Bahasa Malaysia — even a simple “Terima kasih!” will earn you smiles.
