🧭 “Eh, Singapore Again?” – A Malaysian’s Love Letter to the Little Red Dot

Let’s be honest lah — every time someone says “Let’s go Singapore,” the first reaction is always a mix of “Wah shiok!” and “Aiyo, the currency pain bro…” 😂
But somehow… we still go. Again and again.

Why? Because Singapore just gets it right. It’s clean, it’s efficient, and got so much to do in such a small space, it feels like someone compressed a whole season of travel content into one long weekend. And you don’t even need to take leave if you plan it right (Friday half-day, balik Sunday malam — power combo).

My last trip was a spontaneous one with two of my closest makan kakis. We went with zero itinerary and ended up discovering a rooftop bar with free views, a Japanese thrift store in Somerset, and ate laksa so sedap I nearly cried.

So this guide isn’t just the typical “go here, take photo, next” — it’s for us Malaysians who want to get the best of Singapore without feeling like we’re being scammed by the conversion rate 💸.
Let’s dive into all the things you can (and should) do in SG, whether it’s your first time or your fifteenth.

🏙️ Top Attractions Worth the Hype (Yes, Even for Malaysians)

You know how some places are overhyped and then you go there and think, "Eh, this only nice for Instagram ah?"
Singapore’s top attractions? Actually worth it.
Here’s my personal breakdown of the must-go spots — not just for photo ops, but for vibes, makan nearby, and those little moments that make you go “wah”.

🌸 Gardens by the Bay – A Walk Inside a Dream

Gardens by the bat during the night with all the lights

This place legit made me feel like I was in Avatar meets Kew Gardens. The Supertree Grove alone is already a vibe — especially at night when the light and sound show plays. But the real magic?

🌿 Cloud Forest Dome: Mist, mountains, and rare plants all packed into a giant glass dome. It’s surreal. Like walking through an alien rainforest.
🌼 Flower Dome: Different seasonal displays — from tulips to cherry blossoms. The aircon is a bonus too 😅
🌃 Evening Light Show (FREE): Come at 7.45PM or 8.45PM, lie on the floor like everyone else, and just… vibe.

Malaysian Tip:

● Skip the dome tickets if you’re on a budget — just walking around the outdoor gardens and watching the show is already worth the trip.

● But if you do go for one dome, choose Cloud Forest. 10/10.

🌆 Marina Bay Sands SkyPark – Sky-High Feels (And Selfies)

A birds eye view of marina bay sands skypark

You’ve seen it. That spaceship building sitting on top of three towers? Yep, that’s MBS. The SkyPark gives you 360° views of Singapore — from the harbour to the skyline to all the little dots below that are actually humans 😂

But here’s the catch:
Entry is SGD28 — and you don’t even get to swim in the infinity pool (that’s for hotel guests only 💸).

💡 Hack:
Instead of paying for the SkyPark, go to Ce La Vi bar on the same floor. Buy one drink (SGD20+), and enjoy the same view with vibes and a drink in hand. Worth it.

💦 Jewel Changi Airport – Yes, You Should Go Even If You're Not Flying

the lush and green interior of changi airport

I once took a Grab straight from the JB checkpoint just to visit Jewel Changi. That’s how cool this place is.

🌀 The Rain Vortex — the world’s tallest indoor waterfall — sits in the middle of a massive glass dome. It’s surrounded by lush indoor gardens, suspended walking nets, and… a Shake Shack.
It doesn’t feel like an airport. It feels like a luxury sci-fi jungle.

📸 Great for:

● IG pics

● Kids (so much space to run)

● Makan (lots of food options, halal too!)

● Cooling down (aircon heaven)

🏖️ Sentosa Island – The Island Escape Just 15 Mins From the City

The beautiful sandy beaches of sentosa island

If KL had something like this, I swear we’d never leave.

Sentosa is like Singapore’s playground — with beaches, theme parks, aquariums, zip lines, and even an upside-down house.

Must-tries:

● 🐠 S.E.A Aquarium – One of the largest in the world. I nearly cried watching manta rays glide past like gentle sea dragons.

● 🎢 SkyHelix – 360° rotating open-air ride. Not for the faint-hearted, but soooo worth it for the views.

● 🏄 Adventure Cove Waterpark – Slides + snorkelling + lazy river = family-friendly fun

Bonus tip: Sentosa’s beach train and trams are free — use them to hop between Palawan, Siloso, and Tanjong Beach. Great for picnic days.

🦁 Singapore Zoo & Night Safari – Animal Encounters You’ll Remember

A family enjoying the night safari looking at a tiger

Look, I’ve been to a lot of zoos (yes, even Zoo Negara 🥲), and Singapore Zoo is just next-level. Spacious, clean, and the animals genuinely look happy.

But the star of the show? Night Safari.
You ride a tram through the dark jungle, spotting nocturnal animals in dim light. Feels like you’re in a David Attenborough doc. Once, a hyena stared straight at me. We had a moment.

💡 Buy combo tickets if you're doing both. Come early to beat the queue — it gets packed!

📊 Quick Recap Table

Attraction Entry Price (MYR) Worth It? My Verdict
Gardens by the Bay Free (outside), RM36–RM70(domes) Yes 🌸 Go at night for the light show. The Cloud Forest = must-see.
Marina Bay Sands SkyPark RM70 Meh 🤷‍♂️ Skip the ticket, go to Ce La Vi for a drink and same view.
Jewel Changi Airport Free (basic access) YES ✨ Don’t skip! Great for food, pics, and vibes.
Sentosa Island Free entry (attractions vary) Yes lah! 🏖️ Feels like a holiday inside a holiday. So much to do!
Singapore Zoo + Night Safari Combo from RM240 Pricey but worth it 🦁 Night Safari is unforgettable. Zoo is world-class.

We’ll kick things off with shopping spots (both boujee and budget-friendly), then go all-in on the food scene — with honest, Malaysian-style breakdowns, halal options, and tips to stretch that precious ringgit.

🛍️ Shopping Without Regret (Or Bankruptcy)

Let’s be real — when the conversion rate is nearly RM3.50 to 1 SGD, you have to be strategic. No more simply "beli dulu, fikir kemudian" okay? 😂

But lucky for us, Singapore has a shopping spot for every type of Malaysian — whether you're a luxury hunter, bargain beast, or thrift queen 👛

🛍️ Orchard Road – The OG Shopping Belt

The outside of a mall in singapore

Orchard Road; The granddaddy of all Singapore shopping streets. If you want branded stuff (or just want to jalan-jalan in aircon with pretty lights), this is the place. Think Ion Orchard, Takashimaya, 313@Somerset, and the list goes on.

💡 Malaysian tip:

● Sales usually happen June (GSS) and December. That’s when you might find items that feel closer to our local prices.

Don’t forget about Don Don Donki for quirky Japanese snacks and skincare!

🧥 Bugis Street – Bargain Hunter’s Playground

The interior of a mall in singapore

This is more Malaysian style — got street fashion, souvenirs, accessories, bags… and best of all, can nego a bit!
(Just don’t expect Pasar Malam prices lah okay 😅)

● Upstairs got clothing shops, downstairs got very Malaysian vibes — cheap food, fruit juices, phone accessories, and more.

● Next door is Bugis Junction, with more mainstream brands and nice cafés.

🛒 Mustafa Centre – 24/7 Madness in Little India

The front of mustafa square

Need perfume at 2AM? Want to buy 3kg of cashew nuts, 2 rice cookers and a Rolex in one trip? Mustafa Centre got you.

This place is chaotic, but also… somehow amazing. You’ll find everything under the sun, and prices are actually more wallet-friendly than anywhere else in SG.

🌙 Open 24 hours — perfect if you can't sleep or just want to lepaking with purpose.

👚 Haji Lane – Hipster Heaven

A tourist taking pictures in haji lane singapore

If you love artsy stuff, vintage clothes, or want to support indie boutiques, Haji Lane is your spot.
Very IG-friendly — murals, colourful buildings, aesthetic cafés. You’ll see people doing fashion shoots here… or just minum kopi sambil posing.

💡 Tip: Try the thrift stores hidden inside the narrow shops. Found a vintage Levi’s jacket here once for under SGD25 🔥

📊 Quick Shopping Guide Table

Area Vibe What to Buy Malaysian Verdict
Orchard Road Lux, aircon, high-end Branded goods, cosmetics, gadgets Window shopping best… unless got sale 💸
Bugis Street Budget, lively, youth Clothes, souvenirs, small gifts Yes, for affordable shopping fun!
Mustafa Centre Crowded, chaotic, cheap EVERYTHING Great for last-minute or bulk buys
Haji Lane Chill, artsy, indie Thrifted fashion, café hopping Worth a walk, especially for the vibes

🍜 Makan Till You Drop – A Malaysian’s Culinary Quest in Singapore

Okay. Now we talk about the real reason we go Singapore:
Makan sampai puas.
I don’t care if you’re a foodie, a picky eater, or just a budget traveller — Singapore’s food scene will seduce you.

And yes… it really does taste different. Even the chicken rice. Don’t fight me on this 🙃

🐔 Chicken Rice Showdown – Tian Tian vs Hawker Chan

A mouthwatering dish of hainanese chicken rice

Ah, the eternal debate.

Tian Tian (Maxwell Food Centre): Juicy, fragrant, long queue… but worth it. Even Anthony Bourdain gave it his thumbs up.

Hawker Chan (Chinatown): Michelin-starred, soy sauce chicken rice. Affordable, fast, tasty.

🥇 My vote: Tian Tian wins on flavour. But if you hate queues, Hawker Chan is still solid.

🦀 Chili Crab – Spicy, Messy, Worth It

A delicious and spicy looking chili crab dish with a side of mantous

Singapore’s iconic dish. Eat it with your hands and don’t wear white.
Best enjoyed at:

Jumbo Seafood (East Coast)

No Signboard Seafood (Geylang)

● Or if you’re broke but still curious… try the chili crab pasta at local food courts. Got that same sweet-spicy kick.

🍜 Other Must-Trys (Malaysian-Approved)

Dish Where to Eat Why You’ll Love It
Laksa Katong Laksa Spicy, creamy, with noodles you slurp with a spoon only 😍
Hokkien Mee Geylang Lor 29 Wet style, smoky wok hei, got lard bits (sorry halal fam 💔)
Satay Lau Pa Sat Satay Street Open-air, night market vibes. Order 20 sticks, no regrets.
Kaya Toast Set Ya Kun Kaya / Toast Box Breakfast of champions: toast + soft-boiled eggs + kopi C

🕌 Halal Makan Recos

Spot Area Must-Try
Zam Zam Near Bugis Murtabak (beef or chicken), biryani
Hajah Maimunah Kampong Glam Nasi Padang heaven — sambal goreng, beef rendang
Sofra Turkish Café Beach Road Kebabs, lamb stew, and fresh bread

The room was spacious with a lovely river view and good hygiene. Breakfast was just okay. There's a bus stop right outside and a subway station about 300 meters away, making transportation very convenient. They also offer Chinese-speaking service. However, the omelet cook in the restaurant was unfriendly towards Chinese guests, showing differential treatment. Overall, my experience was still pretty good. I also got a late checkout until 3 PM.

The hotel's location is excellent, right in the heart of Orchard Road, Singapore's busiest district, surrounded by shops and eateries. It's incredibly convenient for shopping and dining, and not far from various attractions by subway, which is a major plus. The room's amenities and service are standard, but definitely worth the price in Singapore!

The Carlton Hotel Singapore is a fantastic value-for-money option in the city center, boasting an unbeatable location. It's just a 3-minute walk to City Hall MRT station, directly opposite Raffles City Shopping Centre. You can easily walk to Chijmes and St. Andrew's Cathedral, and Merlion Park is only a 10-minute stroll away. Getting to Gardens by the Bay and Orchard Road is also incredibly convenient. The surrounding area is packed with restaurants and convenience stores, making late-night snack runs a breeze. This hotel meets five-star standards, with an overall rating of 8.7. Its location scores 9.5, cleanliness 9.1, and service 9.0. The rooms are spacious and clean, featuring panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, USB fast-charging ports, and water purifiers. The bathrooms have separate wet and dry areas, ensuring maximum comfort. Facilities are comprehensive, including an outdoor pool and a gym, plus a rooftop bar on the 29th floor offering stunning city night views. Dining options are plentiful with Plate restaurant and Tuxedo Café catering to various tastes. The service is thoughtful and attentive. The concierge and front desk staff are warm and professional, quick to resolve issues like delayed luggage, and even provide pleasant surprises like honeymoon setups and welcome cakes. The hotel offers exceptional value for money, with prices that are friendly compared to other hotels of similar caliber in Singapore, making it ideal for both business and leisure travelers. A minor drawback is the small size of the swimming pool, and check-in times are quite strict, but overall, these small imperfections don't detract from an otherwise excellent experience.

1. The location is incredibly convenient, with Funan Mall right downstairs. It's super easy to get to Merlion Park, Clarke Quay, and Marina Bay Sands, all within walking distance. 2. The room is on the smaller side, definitely not the 28 square meters advertised on the platform, but it's well-equipped and very clean. 3. The breakfast selection is limited, and the taste is just average. 4. There's a deposit of SGD 100 per night upon check-in. 5. I stayed on the 15th floor of the South Tower and didn't experience the noise issues that some reviews mentioned.

Chinatown Singapore|0.94km dari pusat bandar
The location is pretty good, with convenient subway access right next to Chinatown. However, most shops in Chinatown were closed during the Chinese New Year. On the first day, it rained, so we took a taxi instead of the subway, and it was incredibly expensive. A 3.2km ride cost 34 Singapore dollars (likely due to holiday surge pricing). So, friends, remember to take the subway when you're in Singapore, don't hail a taxi. The facilities are just okay, but the breakfast was filling.

I chose this hotel for its design, and indeed, I really liked the design of the 4th floor upon check-in. The greenery was beautiful, and the constant birdsong was lovely. The location is also good; taxis to Marina Bay Sands were around 10 SGD. However, there were some things I wasn't happy about. First, there were mosquitoes in the room. My arms were bitten so badly in the middle of the night that they were swollen for two days. Also, the soundproofing wasn't great. I could hear the elevator noise until late at night, even though my room wasn't right next to it. I paid extra for breakfast, but it was very mediocre. Both the taste and variety were just average and didn't justify the room rate. Lastly, none of the hotel staff spoke Chinese, at least not anyone I encountered during my two-day stay.

I had a staycation at the Swissotel on a weekday night. Since it was quite late, check-in was smooth and fast. I was given a city view premier (Standard) room on the 24th floor. The room was of an odd shape with a long corridor which reduced noise levels. Since the hotel is almost 40 years old now, the rooms are quite spacious, and I enjoyed sitting and relaxing on the large couch and had a great sleep on the wide king bed. However, I did notice some very short strands of hair on the pillow even before I laid down, which makes me wonder if the pillowcase had been washed in between guests. During the daytime, the warm sunlight lit up the surrounding colonial buildings well (CHIJMES, Raffles Hotel etc) and it made for great pictures that I managed to shoot from the balcony of the room. Having stayed at the sister property-- Fairmont Hotel before, I was a little disappointed that the toiletries were of a seemingly ordinary brand, as opposed to LeLabo used at Fairmont which is usually similarly priced but more luxurious. I feel that the minibar area can be upgraded, since currently it looks dark and rather out of place as compared to the rest of the well decorated room. Nespresso and TWG Tea were available, while oddly enough the minibar was empty. At the Fairmont for comparison, there is an overengineered but fully stocked minibar with sensors that will detect the drink leaving the fridge and exorbitant charges will be applied. The room also felt slightly older - Some nicks on the wall, frames etc, as I learned that Swissotel was last renovated in 2019 while Fairmont was renovated slightly later. The USB-A ports also gave away the room's age. There seemed to be rather few charging plugs available for such a large room. Location of the hotel is superb, with convenient transport downstairs via the MRT and it is easy to get a Grabcar. It is also connected to the shopper's paradise, Raffles City Shopping Mall. Singapore faces an acute manpower shortage in the hotel and hospitality industry, but I never once felt service was an issue here. The reception and concierge were amply staffed, staff were friendly and could be seen proactively helping guests with their luggage. I also did not have to wait to check in/out. There is a large gym on the property, raved about by other reviews, but I did not visit it since it is on the Fairmont side of the hotel [quite a walk away] and I got lost trying to find it. Lastly, I could not resist visiting the Skai Restaurant which Swissotel is most known for since it is among the tallest restaurants in Singapore -- taller than Marina Bay Sands. It is located on the 70th floor of the hotel and I had a 3-course lunch there. Service was great as to be expected, but prices are steep - if you don't have the 30% Accor Plus discount. While the food was alright, the view was simply superb since it is unblocked on all sides. I would recommend visiting just for the view, but I heard that there could be a minimum order of 1 main course needed to enter. Overall, nitpicking aside, the Swissotel is one of the better 5 star hotels in Singapore and a great choice for business travellers. Asides from the not so clean pillow I could not find any other major faults. However, since Fairmont and Swissotel are both usually similarly priced at $400+, and having stayed at both before, I would recommend the Fairmont over the Swissotel since it offers a slightly more luxurious experience for not that much more.

Have stayed here 3 times on each visit to SG over the past year. The location is great. Only some rooms have bidet, and where one of our rooms has no bidet, there is a mini fridge. Hope that very room will get a bidet and mini fridge eventually. The TV is useless as the Internet is too slow to cast anything on it. Maybe provide a HDMI cable so we could connect our devices to it. Wish there are stretch bands and roller foam provided in the gym. I’ve seen some guests confused over the way to use the washer and dryer, so it might be good to print a poster with instructions to use them.

Hotel Boss has a fantastic location. There's a Founder Bak Kut Teh restaurant right downstairs! The closest MRT station is Lavender, and it's only about three to four stops to places like Merlion Park and Marina Bay. There are also many bus stops nearby, providing direct access to all major attractions in Singapore. Plus, there's a Sheng Siong supermarket about 500-600 meters away, which is great for buying souvenirs at a good price! The rooms are a bit small, but generally very clean and tidy. The breakfast offers a good variety, and there's also a large swimming pool! If you're looking for good value for money, this place is definitely a solid choice.

Stayed 3D2N with my daughter to meet my youngest daughter from SMU. The hotel nearby SMU Campus . The hotel room is very big room compare i survey the other hotel, , newly renovated and clean. The staff are very friendly, especially the front counter staff. The hotel provides a water filter machine on every floor (reminder: bring your own tumbler 👍). The location is very convenient for MRT — just a few steps away from Bras Basah MRT 🚇, and Bus Stop are available directly to Suntec City Mall and Marina Bay. Within a 5-minute walk, you can reach Bugis Street, Bugis Junction, and Bugis+ for shopping and food. In front of the the Bugis Malll, there’s a Chinese hawker stall — the chicken rice is nice, cheap, and delicious 😋. Overall, it’s a great place to stay. The hotel is conveniently located right by the Singapore River. My kids absolutely loved the split-level design of the room. ## Environment: The location is good, very close to the subway, making transportation convenient. There's a convenience store downstairs, so it's easy to grab a bite if you get hungry at night. We East Asians might find the smell in some areas a bit uncomfortable (mainly in the elevator; the lobby and rooms are fine. You know the drill). ## Hygiene: The room was quite clean. ## Service: Check-in involved a bit of a wait. For Singapore, it seems there are fewer staff who speak Chinese. Also, my breakfast records for two days weren't logged, so I had to explain and confirm with the staff every morning. ## Breakfast: Perhaps to cater to the needs of Indian guests, the breakfast here was truly difficult to describe... ## Facilities: The hotel facilities are quite old, but! The important thing is that the rooms are really spacious. If you're not a fan of Singapore's super small-sized rooms, I highly recommend this place. Additionally, the hotel decor might remind you of the golden nineties; it's quite retro and stylish in its own way.

For this price, don't expect too much from the cleanliness. Lower your expectations, and you might find it just about okay. The pros: It's close to the Rainbow Police Station, Fort Canning Park, and the Little India temple. Public transport and MRT stations are a guaranteed 10-minute walk away, and there's a 7-Eleven within 5 minutes. Even though it was hot and we were tired in the afternoon, the kids still had energy, so we let them go to the pool. It's small, which is good, and not too deep, so I just relaxed on a lounge chair while they had a blast all afternoon. Clarke Quay is right next door. The hotel's condition is just average, probably on par with a 3-star hotel in China. It's a 5-minute walk from the SkyHelix. I had such a wonderful stay here! The room was spacious and very clean, and the bathroom was spotless with everything I needed — even a bidet spray, which was a nice touch. My favorite part was definitely the warm spray shower. It felt so soothing and relaxing, almost like enjoying a mini onsen after a long day. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, especially the short-haired lady at the front desk — she was so polite, friendly, and made me feel truly cared for. The location is also very convenient — just a 3-minute walk to local restaurants (including a delicious Thai eatery and a famous porridge shop called Jok Kob), a bus stop, and a convenience store.
