THE 15 BEST Surabaya Taxis & Shuttles (2025) - Tripadvisor

Taxis are a convenient and reliable way to travel around Surabaya, with services available at Juanda International Airport, major hotels, shopping malls, and popular attractions. Blue Bird and Orenz Taxi are among the most trusted operators, offering metered fares, clean vehicles, and professional service. Both Grab and Gojek are known for their reliability, transparent pricing, and convenience, which make them highly recommended for tourists. Ride-hailing is also significantly cheaper than using private taxis, and you can easily estimate travel times and fares before confirming your trip.

When using either service, it is advisable to:

  • Double-check your pickup location before confirming the ride.
  • Keep some cash (in small notes) handy in case e-wallet payment fails.
  • Always wear a helmet if you are using Gojek’s motorbike service (helmets are provided).
  • Avoid booking during heavy rain or peak hours to prevent surge pricing.

Grab and Gojek together offer the most efficient, safe, and affordable way to explore Surabaya — from shopping malls and cultural landmarks to street food areas and local markets.

The room was very spacious, comfortable, and clean. The bathroom had both a bathtub and a separate shower. The water in the shower wasn't hot enough, but luckily, the bathtub water was nice and hot. The breakfast had a wide variety and was delicious. I've been to Indonesia several times and stayed in many hotels, and the breakfast here ranks among the best in my opinion 👍. It's a hotel I would definitely want to stay at again.

Arrival was well attended by concierge. Check in is disappointing. (Staff name Max) not very accommodating. Need to learn extend of service. We have 4 rooms booked in total and all located in diff floors. Request for just 1 extra bed as already paid for room with 3 adults w bf but staff insisted to charge extra for bed for it due to high occupancy. He said it’s been requested by 70 guest that is arriving? Double standard service. Even with much plea still said no. Requested for bday compliments they gave a small cake that’s hard and not moist. Pls Improve quality. No balloons or decor. For a 5 star hotel, basically not to standard. We book the shuttle service at 2pm for next day. But next day they said can’t meet the time we requested because of the large group. Terrible! Dint wsnt to complain and spoil our vacation. Bf was so so. Not the best but acceptable. Generally hotel room is large and comfortable. Only the guy staff lacks service. He’s sooo rigid and stucked up.

Nice, clean, and spacious room with comfortable beds, a fridge, and a kettle. Everything worked very well. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The pool is covered, but the water is relatively cold and not suitable for lap swimming. The gym is very small but offers a great view of the city. The breakfast buffet was good. We felt very comfortable. Overall, recommended for the price.

Great solid property and performance all round.. what a great short stay we had.. from the elegant lobby and lounge area through to the beautiful spacious room with lovely views over Surabaya. Exceptionally clean with every quality amenity on offer in room and within hotel confines. The room was peacefully quiet, with a soft comforting bed. Pool and recreational area was set amongst manicured palm trees and gorgeous gardens. The pool was one of the best balanced PH levels I’ve ever swam in. Nice comfortable lounges and ample seating around with some seats submerged along in pool. The refined service level at this hotel is a solid 10/10 from reception/concierge/ room attendants and especially in Pavilion Restaurant. The quality, presentation and variety of food is outstanding at breakfast. Thank you graciously for making our special occasion so welcoming with the beautifully adorable presentation on the bed, lovely celebration cake offered along with the very personal attention from the Sous Chef and charming restaurant staff at Pavilion. Special shoutout to Restaurant ambassador Wachid whom personally escorted our plated celebratory cake to our room. Reception and concierge service was also exceptional, graciously assisting us with our missing luggage wheel dilemma. JW Marriott and all involved.. till we meet again.. Terih Makasih 🙏🏻

I requested a non-smoking room, but I could smell strong cigarette smoke every night, which disturbed my sleep. The air conditioner was also not cold, and I couldn’t adjust the temperature because the remote control was broken. No floor mat was provided, and the hotel itself feels quite old and in need of upgrades. My transportation keep registering every time I went out. Overall, the best thing about this hotel is its strategic location. It’s easy to access restaurants, malls, and several attractions within walking distance. The staffs also very friendly. Before I review I want to say all the staff were kind friendly and very helpful. If this review was about the staff you would have 100%. My problem is with the fabric of the hotel. It is dirty , shabby and living in the past. The first entertainment hotel in the city. Looking at it it was probably the last time it was refurbished. I feel that the staff put on a brave face and they are professional in their duties. Entering my room the sheets were grey had holes and stained. If you use an external laundry and hire your linen someone needs to change your contract!! Grey is not white. The walls are covered in hardboard and are dirty. Shower and toilet ok. Fire door did not self close. Hole in the wall where the self closer keeps hitting it. If this is a four star hotel it’s the staff who are keeping it there, a review though in my opinion would drop you to two stars at the best!! The owners need to reinvest!!

I was assigned room with amazing view from 6th floor. The room is clean and neat and I love that they have smart TV. Wifi is pretty fast and reliable too. Nice old style hotel with a lovely garden and the location is all right. The room is also spacious and clean. However, this is a hotel more suitable to tourists than business travellers. All the electrical outlets in the room are connected to the main switch, and so the only way to charge your cellphone at night is to keep at least one light on. The breakfast is average and there is just one bag each of tea and coffee in the room, and two bottles of water. This hotel feels like one of the more upscale options in Surabaya. The garden is absolutely beautiful, attracting many visitors who come specifically to take photos, and it has a rich historical background. The mattress in the room was very comfortable. The only minor issue was that the sink in the bathroom drained a bit slowly, which seems to be a common problem in Surabaya. The breakfast was incredibly abundant; I'd recommend setting aside an hour to enjoy it. Plus, it's right next to a shopping center, making it perfect for some last-day travel browsing. The hotel's spa is about 250 RMB for a 60-minute session per person, but it's really relaxing. Just a heads-up, check-in is only available after 2 PM.

🚆 Train Travel Between Cities

Source: The Jakarta Post

Surabaya serves as one of the most important railway hubs in Indonesia, connecting major cities across the island of Java. Travelling by train is one of the most comfortable and scenic ways to explore other destinations from Surabaya, offering travellers a reliable alternative to long bus rides or domestic flights.

The city has two main train stations — Surabaya Gubeng Station and Surabaya Pasar Turi Station.

  • Gubeng Station mainly handles trains heading south and east, such as to Malang, Yogyakarta, and Banyuwangi.
  • Pasar Turi Station serves routes to the west and north, including Jakarta and Semarang.

Indonesian trains are generally clean, punctual, and well-maintained. There are three main classes of service:

  1. Executive Class (Eksekutif) – Air-conditioned with spacious seats, ideal for long journeys.
  2. Business Class (Bisnis) – Comfortable with standard seating and air-conditioning.
  3. Economy Class (Ekonomi) – Affordable and basic, popular among local travellers.

Tickets can be easily purchased at train stations, through the KAI Access app, or via online booking platforms. It is recommended to book early, especially during weekends and public holidays, as trains tend to sell out quickly.

For multi-day trips or excursions outside the city, such as to Malang, Bromo, or Banyuwangi, hiring a car with a driver offers the best balance of comfort, safety, and convenience. Many local drivers also act as informal guides, helping travellers explore attractions at their own pace without the stress of navigating or parking.

💳 Money and Payment in Surabaya

Understanding how payments work in Surabaya will help Malaysian travellers navigate the city smoothly and avoid unnecessary inconveniences. While modern payment methods such as credit cards and e-wallets are becoming more common, cash remains essential in many places especially small shops, traditional markets, and local food stalls.

🏦 Currency Exchange

Currency exchange services are available at Juanda International Airport, major shopping malls, and authorised money changers across the city. It is advisable to exchange a small amount at the airport for transportation and small expenses, then exchange larger amounts at licensed money changers in the city for better rates.

Banks such as Bank Central Asia (BCA), Bank Mandiri, and Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) also offer currency exchange services. Always check the rates and make sure to keep your exchange receipts.

💡 Tip: Avoid changing money on the street or with unlicensed agents to prevent counterfeit or short-counted notes.

🏧 ATMs and Cash Withdrawal

ATMs are widely available throughout Surabaya in shopping malls, convenience stores, and near hotels. Malaysian travellers can withdraw cash using Visa, MasterCard, or Cirrus-enabled debit or credit cards. Withdrawal fees typically range from IDR 20,000–50,000 (RM 6–15) per transaction, depending on your home bank. To avoid issues, always choose ATMs located inside secure areas (such as malls or banks) and notify your bank before travelling to prevent card blocking.

💳 Credit and Debit Cards

Major credit and debit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted at upscale hotels, restaurants, and large retail outlets. However, many smaller shops and food stalls still prefer cash payments. Before using your card, confirm with the cashier whether card payments are accepted, as some places may require a minimum spend or add a small service charge.
