THE 15 BEST Surabaya Taxis & Shuttles (2025) - Tripadvisor

Taxis are a convenient and reliable way to travel around Surabaya, with services available at Juanda International Airport, major hotels, shopping malls, and popular attractions. Both Grab and Gojek are known for their reliability, transparent pricing, and convenience, which make them highly recommended for tourists. Ride-hailing is also significantly cheaper than using private taxis, and you can easily estimate travel times and fares before confirming your trip.

When using either service, it is advisable to:

  • Double-check your pickup location before confirming the ride.
  • Keep some cash (in small notes) handy in case e-wallet payment fails.
  • Always wear a helmet if you are using Gojek’s motorbike service (helmets are provided).
  • Avoid booking during heavy rain or peak hours to prevent surge pricing.

Grab and Gojek together offer the most efficient, safe, and affordable way to explore Surabaya — from shopping malls and cultural landmarks to street food areas and local markets.

The room was very spacious, comfortable, and clean. The bathroom had both a bathtub and a separate shower. The water in the shower wasn't hot enough, but luckily, the bathtub water was nice and hot. The breakfast had a wide variety and was delicious. I've been to Indonesia several times and stayed in many hotels, and the breakfast here ranks among the best in my opinion 👍. It's a hotel I would definitely want to stay at again.

This is supposed to be a five-star hotel, great location but the service was just so-so! There's only one all-day dining restaurant on the second floor. The towels were absolutely filthy, worse than what you'd find in a two-star hotel. They were discolored from white to gray and yet still provided to guests. Unacceptable... I can only give it two stars! The soundproofing in the room was also poor, and the facilities were worse than a three-star hotel back home. For a supposed five-star, I'm reluctantly giving it three stars.

I had a staycation for my husband's birthday and our 18th anniversary. I was so happy because all of my requests were granted, and the service was outstanding. Thank you, Vasa Hotel. We received both a birthday cake and an anniversary cake for free. It's rare for a hotel to fulfill customer requests like this. For the past two years, my birthday staycations at other 5-star hotels were a bust, I didn't get anything. This hotel is luxurious, clean, and all the staff are friendly. It truly deserves its 5 stars and is definitely worth returning to (mbaleniable).

This hotel is located in the Darmo area, within walking distance to Surabaya Zoo, and about a 10-minute taxi ride to the train station, Submarine Monument, and Plaza. There are plenty of restaurants and convenience stores within walking distance, making the location excellent and safe. I stayed here for three nights. The executive suite on the top floor offers great views, but the deluxe suite on the floor below would have been perfectly adequate. Both rooms are very spacious with two floor-to-ceiling windows. The breakfast buffet offers a wide variety of choices, enough to satisfy even a Chinese palate. A special thank you to the front desk staff for helping me find my wallet, which I had lost in the lobby!

Hotel is decent, not the new posh kind of hotel and it shows in some of its facilities in the room but the rooms are very big, service staff was very nice and helpful and spa was superb! As a female solo traveler it felt safe to stay at. Would recommend if you are not too picky about rooms and for the price it was good. Location was quite convenient too. I always stay here whenever I visit, but this time the experience was a bit disappointing. It has many positives, otherwise I wouldn't keep coming back to Surabaya and staying here. Let me talk about the negatives. I drove all the way from Bali, feeling a bit tired and unwell. I wanted to check my blood pressure, but when I asked at the front desk, they said they didn't have a blood pressure monitor. I believe a blood pressure monitor and some simple health check tools should be readily available. They're not large pieces of equipment, and it's essential for hotels to have some basic medical supplies for guests who feel unwell. This is just my personal suggestion. Also, during holidays or public festival days, the hotel's advantage of convenient transportation and being connected to a mall turns into a nightmare. You have to wait a long time for the elevator to get to the basement parking, and finding a parking spot becomes extremely difficult.

Before I review I want to say all the staff were kind friendly and very helpful. If this review was about the staff you would have 100%. My problem is with the fabric of the hotel. It is dirty , shabby and living in the past. The first entertainment hotel in the city. Looking at it it was probably the last time it was refurbished. I feel that the staff put on a brave face and they are professional in their duties. Entering my room the sheets were grey had holes and stained. If you use an external laundry and hire your linen someone needs to change your contract!! Grey is not white. The walls are covered in hardboard and are dirty. Shower and toilet ok. Fire door did not self close. Hole in the wall where the self closer keeps hitting it. If this is a four star hotel it’s the staff who are keeping it there, a review though in my opinion would drop you to two stars at the best!! The owners need to reinvest!!

The location is super strategic, right in the city center and close to everything. Public transport access is also nearby. It’s a decent hotel located in center of Surabaya near to Tunjungan Plaza and Jalan Tunjungan. The room is very standard to everything one person need for few nights stay… nothing fancy. I was assigned room with amazing view from 6th floor. The room is clean and neat and I love that they have smart TV. Wifi is pretty fast and reliable too. One thing for improvement is foul smell on the hallway. I think it’s due to the aging building. However, staffs clean the hallway carpet regularly. Good location, room, gym and breakfast. If I stop here, it will only be a very regular comment. I would say the hotel is operated by warm heart staff trying all means to help guests. We encountered a big issue with car rental, with no E-Toll card prepared by the rental car company. I just asked Dimas Adhytyawarman the duty manager where to buy e-Toll, Dimas not only told me the supermarkets to buy it, more importantly, he checked with colleagues and informed us that the supermarket cannot charge e-Toll and banks are closed during weekend. We still tried our luck to check these supermarkets, but only came back to hotel with a card without money. When Dimas saw my husband be back to the lobby, he asked him how it went. Understanding that we were not able to solve it, he and his colleague Andrey even tried to use their own e-bank to get some money for us to enter the freeway and then we can top the card on the way. Eventually, they helped us solve the problem completely. Without their full commitment to service, problem-solving mindset, caring for people, we would not be able to start a great vacation to Bromo and Sewu driving by our own. Once more, sincere thanks to Dimas Adhytyawarman and Andrey. I believe they will have a great career with all their wonderful traits.

This hotel feels like one of the more upscale options in Surabaya. The garden is absolutely beautiful, attracting many visitors who come specifically to take photos, and it has a rich historical background. The mattress in the room was very comfortable. The only minor issue was that the sink in the bathroom drained a bit slowly, which seems to be a common problem in Surabaya. The breakfast was incredibly abundant; I'd recommend setting aside an hour to enjoy it. Plus, it's right next to a shopping center, making it perfect for some last-day travel browsing. I chose this hotel because I had heard it offers great views and is conveniently located near many attractions, including Tunjungan Plaza. However, despite booking a non-smoking room, I was informed upon arrival that only smoking rooms were available. Unfortunately, the cigarette smell throughout the corridor and inside the room was very strong and difficult to tolerate. I considered moving to another room, but since I was only staying for one night, I decided to stay. The staff offered to spray the room with air freshener, but it did not help much. I also tried to adjust the room temperature but could not find the AC remote. It think the hotel uses a central AC system, and the thermostat in the room was missing some buttons, which did not look good. 🚆 Train Travel Between Cities

Source: The Jakarta Post

Surabaya serves as one of the most important railway hubs in Indonesia, connecting major cities across the island of Java. Travelling by train is one of the most comfortable and scenic ways to explore other destinations from Surabaya, offering travellers a reliable alternative to long bus rides or domestic flights.

The city has two main train stations — Surabaya Gubeng Station and Surabaya Pasar Turi Station.

  • Gubeng Station mainly handles trains heading south and east, such as to Malang, Yogyakarta, and Banyuwangi.
  • Pasar Turi Station serves routes to the west and north, including Jakarta and Semarang.

Indonesian trains are generally clean, punctual, and well-maintained. There are three main classes of service:

  1. Executive Class (Eksekutif) – Air-conditioned with spacious seats, ideal for long journeys.
  2. Business Class (Bisnis) – Comfortable with standard seating and air-conditioning.
  3. Economy Class (Ekonomi) – Affordable and basic, popular among local travellers.

Tickets can be easily purchased at train stations, through the KAI Access app, or via online booking platforms. It is recommended to book early, especially during weekends and public holidays, as trains tend to sell out quickly.

Below is a guide to popular train routes from Surabaya, including estimated fares and travel times:

The trains also feature restrooms and designated luggage storage areas.

If you plan to continue to Bali, you can take the train from Surabaya Gubeng to Banyuwangi, followed by a short ferry ride across the Bali Strait to Gilimanuk Port, a scenic and convenient overland route between Java and Bali.

Car rental services are available at Juanda International Airport, major hotels, and through online booking platforms. You can choose to drive yourself or hire a car with a driver, although a chauffeur-driven service is often recommended for Malaysian travellers due to Surabaya's busy traffic and unfamiliar road conditions. A local driver can also provide useful knowledge of the best routes, attractions, and dining spots, making your journey more comfortable and convenient.

Rental prices typically include basic insurance, and additional charges may apply for overtime, tolls, or parking. If you plan to drive yourself, ensure you possess an International Driving Permit (IDP), as Malaysian licences alone are not officially recognised in Indonesia.

For multi-day trips or excursions outside the city, such as to Malang, Bromo, or Banyuwangi, hiring a car with a driver offers the best balance of comfort, safety, and convenience. Many local drivers also act as informal guides, helping travellers explore attractions at their own pace without the stress of navigating or parking.

💳 Money and Payment in Surabaya

Understanding how payments work in Surabaya will help Malaysian travellers navigate the city smoothly and avoid unnecessary inconveniences. While modern payment methods such as credit cards and e-wallets are becoming more common, cash remains essential in many places especially small shops, traditional markets, and local food stalls.

🏦 Currency Exchange

Currency exchange services are available at Juanda International Airport, major shopping malls, and authorised money changers across the city. It is advisable to exchange a small amount at the airport for transportation and small expenses, then exchange larger amounts at licensed money changers in the city for better rates.

Banks such as Bank Central Asia (BCA), Bank Mandiri, and Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) also offer currency exchange services. Always check the rates and make sure to keep your exchange receipts.

💡 Tip: Avoid changing money on the street or with unlicensed agents to prevent counterfeit or short-counted notes.

🏧 ATMs and Cash Withdrawal

ATMs are widely available throughout Surabaya in shopping malls, convenience stores, and near hotels. Malaysian travellers can withdraw cash using Visa, MasterCard, or Cirrus-enabled debit or credit cards. Withdrawal fees typically range from IDR 20,000–50,000 (RM 6–15) per transaction, depending on your home bank. To avoid issues, always choose ATMs located inside secure areas (such as malls or banks) and notify your bank before travelling to prevent card blocking.

💳 Credit and Debit Cards

Major credit and debit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted at upscale hotels, restaurants, and large retail outlets. However, many smaller shops and food stalls still prefer cash payments. Before using your card, confirm with the cashier whether card payments are accepted, as some places may require a minimum spend or add a small service charge.

📱 E-Wallets and Digital Payments

Digital payments through GoPay, OVO, and DANA are becoming increasingly common, especially in urban areas. These platforms are widely used for ride-hailing (Grab, Gojek), food delivery, and retail purchases. However, foreign travellers may find it difficult to activate local e-wallets, as registration often requires an Indonesian phone number and bank account. For convenience, Malaysians can continue using credit or debit cards for online bookings and hotel payments.
