Do Malaysians Need a Visa to Visit Canada?

Old Quebec

Yes. Malaysian passport holders need a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) to visit Canada (no eTA option). Apply before you travel; most applicants must give biometrics. This applies whether you arrive by air, land, or sea.

If you’re flying and you see references to an eTA online, that does not apply to Malaysians—only to passport holders from visa-exempt countries.

You can check the official requirement and start your application on IRCC’s site.

How to Apply for a Canada Visa

Source from www.canada.ca

Confirm you need a visa (not an eTA)

Malaysia is visa-required for short visits to Canada. You’ll be applying for a Visitor Visa (TRV).

Read the official “How to apply” guide

This page walks you through the process and opens the online application.

Gather documents with the IRCC checklist (IMM 5484)

Use IRCC’s official checklist to prep your passport, photos, funds, travel plan, ties to Malaysia, invitation (if any), etc.

Get visa photos that meet IRCC specs

Photo size and head size are specific (35×45 mm; head 31–36 mm).

Create/Sign in to the IRCC online portal and fill the forms

You’ll complete the TRV application online and upload your documents. (Forms like IMM 5257 are generated in the portal.)

Pay fees (visa + biometrics)

Visitor visa processing fee is CAD $100. Biometrics (if required) are $85 per person ($170 family cap). Pay online.

Give biometrics (fingerprints + photo)

You’ll receive a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL) in your IRCC account. Book an appointment at an official site (e.g., VFS Global Kuala Lumpur) and complete biometrics within the deadline stated on your BIL.

Wait for IRCC updates

IRCC will message you in your account. If approved, you’ll receive passport submission instructions and a decision letter. Follow the instructions exactly; VACs charge a service fee to transmit your passport for visa stamping.

Submit your passport

Use the method IRCC specifies (often via the VAC). After the visa counterfoil is placed in your passport, the VAC returns it to you.

Travel to Canada

Bring your passport (with the visa), supporting documents (e.g., itinerary, proof of funds, invitation if applicable), and your return/onward ticket. IRCC’s “Visitor visa” page explains arrival steps.

The hotel was a glamorous stay right in the heart of Toronto. There’s a feeling of old luxury in the rooms and the lobby. The room had been renovated recently but they’re much smaller than newer hotels and only just fits a couple and luggage. The amenities were good, and we used the small sauna and steam room. Everything about the hotel was great despite being so compact. The toiletries provided were by Le Labo, but the scent is very strong and can be overpowering for some if you don’t bring your own.

The location of the hotel is very good, the room is very clean and has a sense of design, I stayed in Andy's room for 3 days. The service is also very good. In the middle of the night, the waiter will bring you boiling water after a while. The fly in the ointment is that the old house's water outlet and drainage are not very good, and the water from the faucet is all white. The rooftop pool has a nice view but the water is a bit cold.

The reason for choosing Ritz is to value service. But I think Ritz Toronto didn't do that! Ritz discriminates in room arrangement! When I first stayed for two nights, I was assigned to the 10th floor. I was not satisfied and asked for a higher one. I was changed to the 17th floor! As a result, when I checked in again two days later, I was assigned to the 7th floor! I was speechless! And knowing that I had just checked in a few days ago, I wonder if guests are used to it! The most unacceptable thing is that when I left, I asked the concierge to help me move my luggage into the car. I also prepared a tip. As a result, the concierge was extremely unenthusiastic. I reminded him several times but he didn't move. He moved one for every one my friend moved! He even wanted a tip. Where does his confidence come from!

When staying at the hotel, the front desk informed that all non-alcoholic beverages in the mini-bar are free because they have been prepaid. After that, bring some desserts. Someone knocked on the door at night, asking if a turndown service was needed. Before leaving, I was told that there are additional charges: facility charge $12, Neighbourhood Mktg $4.89. This is required upon check-in.

On June 25th my wife and I stayed at the Chelsea for 1 night. We have been clients of Chelsea since it was first constructed many years ago. We had a very disappointed stay this time because, as we waited on Gerrard St to enter the underground parking (quite congested) we were given a $200 parking violation by a parking representative who stated we were blocking the bike lane. We were in line for approximately 10 minutes and considered it normal traffic congestion in Toronto. We remained in our car and eventually entered the parking garage. I have disputed the parking ticket, but also feel that Chelsea has to take some ownership in this situation. There were a couple of vehicles in front of the hotel without occupants that should have been moved and this would have given much easier access to the parking. As of today Chelsea will not be a top preference for future visits to Toronto.

We had an amazing experience at the Hilton, Toronto. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our train got into the city, and we had a few hours before our scheduled show. The staff graciously tagged and stored our luggage while we toured around. The lobby, room and the pool were both amazing and very clean! The pool (and sauna) was a highlight for sure! Just beautiful! We were given late checkout upon asking, and enjoyed the pool more the next morning. Also, the little coffee shop in the large hallway attached to the hotel was SO good!!! They were wonderful there as well. We highly recommend and will certainly book our next stay here!!!:)

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights and all is good. It was a lovely surprise as it was a last minute booking after our Airbnb (paid) reservation became unresponsive. We are very glad we found this Suites. We particularly like the sitting room where we could sit down for a rest and watch TV, have a takeaway for dinner. The microwave comes in very handy (although we love to have a basic kitchen!) . Location: about 5 mins walk from the Queen station, there is actually an exit right in front of the hotel but you need to know how to navigate underground. It would be handy if it rains. It's 7 mins walk to the Eaton Centre where there are urban eateries, and you can take a tram to Chinatown. About 20 mins walk to CN tower and the harbour front, although you may want to just catch the subway. There is a 24-h supermarket across the road. Service: really friendly hotel staff check in and out, one of the housekeeping lady is also very friendly. No fault at all. The room is quite modern, spacious and new. If I had to find something to say, I would prefer to have the duvet put inside a cover rather than sandwiched between two bedsheets (which seemed to be the norm in Canada?), but I'm not fuss about it. All in all, we will definitely come back again.

Breakfast

The hotel lacks dedicated areas for dining, and to sit down and enjoy a meal. The bed and breakfast deal would have meant eating from and/or in an adjoining small coffee shop - so no nice breakfast buffets or very limited breakfast menu. The website pics of vaults look amazing online, but in reality the vault was cluttered as a storage room. The room (3210) was tired, cracked tiles in the bathroom, dirty windows, very basic crockery (2 plates/bowls) and cutlery (2 of each - knife/fork/spoon) - made the kitchenette hard to make the full use of. The in-room coffee machine was dirty, so didn’t use. The room is basic and bathroom old fashioned with old white shower curtain, dirty brown/cream stone tiles with ingrained dirt. The advertising online shows the hotel as a contemporary interesting old bank/vault which was why we booked - in reality it’s old and tired in most places - including the lifts which are scratched old dark wood. The ‘spa’ or gym is limited. On a plus note, the hotel was a great location to see Toronto. Would we stay there again… I’m sorry to say… no.

The service at this hotel was truly frustrating. First, we were informed that our two rooms couldn't be on the same floor. If we insisted on being on the same floor, we'd have to settle for a room with a significantly worse view. Ironically, the room we were given, which supposedly had a good view, turned out to be an accessible room that only had one chair. I called room service to request an additional chair, and they agreed promptly. However, the chair never arrived, not even by the time we checked out. I can't help but wonder if these common ploys are because bookings made through platforms like Ctrip aren't well-regarded.

Location: The hotel is not connected to the PATH, that you can walk completely indoor from lakeshore all the way to Dundas street, with access to loads of restaurants and shops. The southest connected building is one street across the hotel. The room was newly renovated, yet it was not in a modern way: the room lights were not turn on by slot in the room card at the entrance (actually there's no such upgrade in the room at all!). I have turn on every single light when I go into the room and turn them off before I sleep. There's at least 6 of them! Do not disturb sign still required to hang out the tag on the door handle, which fell off everytime you open the door!! super annoying The lobby bar food were good and especially the staff were very friendly. The hotel is in a great location, just opposite the University of Toronto and the Ontario Museum. On the left is the luxury shopping street, with LV, Chanel and other world brands. On the right is a subway station more than 100 meters away. There are also 24-hour convenience stores and department stores on both sides. The room is large, spacious, bright and well-equipped, which is equivalent to a one-bedroom apartment, much larger than the rooms of Tokyo Empire and Hong Kong Conrad. The restaurant on the first floor is a high-end restaurant with no buffet. Breakfast costs 30 Canadian dollars per person, and dinner costs about 60 Canadian dollars per person. If you want to save money, you can go to Whole Foods 500 meters behind the side. It is very huge and has everything you need for cooked food, and there are even rice self-service lunch boxes. Located in the wealthy area of Yorkville, Toronto, it is safe and quiet. There are no tour groups. Most of the guests are Europeans and Americans, but the hotel is also very friendly to Chinese people, with warm smiles. There are two Asian girls at the front desk who can speak some Chinese, so we checked in in two or three minutes. The only minor issue was that the hotel asked us to pay a facility fee twice. We explained to the hotel that the Ctrip booking included all fees. The hotel said they had not received the facility fee, but after looking at our confirmation letter on Ctrip, they kindly said they would reconfirm with Ctrip and it would not affect us.

Processing usually takes several weeks but can vary depending on the season. It’s best to apply well in advance.

  • What should I do if my visa application is rejected?

You may reapply if you have new information or if your circumstances change.
