I'm conflicted with this hotel, the location great, the building attractive, and the transport links (as in most of Amsterdam) are spot on. The staff I met were all friendly and helpful, and the restaurant recommendation sheet was a useful touch. The lounge area is generally well appointed and has an Honesty bar which was well stocked and reasonably priced. Shortly after checkin a hand-written note and voucher for a free drink were placed by the door. This was a nice touch and appreciated. The bed was comfortable enough, and bedding and towels were clean. Tea & Coffee were restocked by housekeeping. Sadly that brings me to the negatives. Specific to my particular room is that the downstairs layout is such that Room17 really shouldn't be a hotel room, but should be part of the lounge area. The access to the room felt like I was walking through a (short) service corridor. The carpet is very worn and the floorboards scuffed up. The kitchen was left open constantly and in the morning the noise from deliveries and food prep woke me up around 5am. There is no privacy due to the bed being directly next to the garden window, so the curtains have to be closed whenever you are in the room and if other guests are in the garden in the evening they will keep you awake. Whilst the bed was comfortable, the room had twin beds but no space around or between. Just put in a double/king. The room in general was grubby and tired, it feels like it's overdue a redecoration at least 3 years. There are bloodstains & holes on the net curtains, and numerous cracks, plastered over screw holes and water stains on the wall. I understand it is an old building but things like this just look shabby. COVID was perhaps a missed chance to renovate? Simple things like the lampshade over the table being scratched up and the flex being filthy and covered in paint splashes. The bathroom urgently needs a deep clean & maintenance, there are stains everywhere, embedded dust in corners, and black mold growing on the grout. One handle for the shower is missing, the sink tap is leaking from the base, the smaller of the flush buttons for the toilet does not function and two lights in the bathroom also do not work. The whirlpool bath is a nice touch, but sounds like a jet engine taking off and is amplified by the tub, it feels as if a motor has been mounted incorrectly causing the resonance. Lighting in the bathroom is so bright that it's not a relaxing experience.
