Khaban Bacalar Hotel Boutique

In this hotel everything is about money. Instead of a warm welcome you are told what everything will cost when you lose or damage it. And we were told that we would not be refunded in case we would leave the hotel earlier (we prepaid everything, why would we want to leave early?). Rooms should be spotless in an hotel with these prices but bathrooms and showers are not. We had large insects in our room and cleaning was very poor. In 1 of our 2 rooms we didn’t have internet during our entire stay. The worse were the receptionist: they are on their phone all the time and totally uninterested in the guests. This hotel is not worth the price they charge. There are much better options near Bacalar.

The hotel is located on the lake, that was the reason for booking this hotel. The kayaks are included which is very nice! Note that the hotel is It’s 20 min from the center of Bacalar. When we arrived, we went to the restaurant (only a few tables) for a lunch. Both my son and I are vegetarian, so we asked for the vegetarian options. Only one option. Unfortunately, not available. When I complained, the guy in the restaurant told me: 'you’re in Mexico'. We already spend a week in Mexico with excellent vegetarian food. During our lunch, a lot of flies and two cats hang around. It was quite rainy for some days and it felt a bit ‘trapped’ in the resort, far away for the center. I think there are much better places to stay.

So this place is fantastic in most aspect including service and location .However a tad bit too rustic for urban folks and a bit on the pricey side for what it offers. First of all there are snake signs everywhere which might freak some people . We also had a small scorpion in the bathroom which I saw while taking a shower. This was not acceptable and the hotel manager brushed it by saying- 'they are not dangerous and yes there are bugs etc ' . Now I am not sure of any scorpion being not dangerous or if scorpions are considered as regular bugs ( I can say this with utter confidence - as have a personal experience with scorpion sting and hospitalization. Also if there are 1 scorpion , they generally have a nest with 8-10 in the vicinity ) He also did not offer any recourse as such. Adding this review for awareness and make the correct decision

Beautiful place to stay at. It has panoramic windows so expect best views from your room during sunset or sunrise. Excellent service, stuff is very friendly and pleasant. The restaurant there had the most delicious food: chicken enchiladas, fish tacos (tilapia), guacamole. Still craving it nowadays. We loved that it had free kayaks. We enjoyed it during sunrise early morning. We also got massage at our porch. It was very relaxing. The hotel maintenance is perfect. Always clean, tidy and fresh. The only minus is that hot water works for just first 10 minutes of showering. So take the shower together if you love it hot;)

Everything from the beginning was perfect, Easy check in, Rooms are really clean and beautiful, i came to realx and chill and it was exactly what i was looking for, Food is great, Erick and Antonio where really great. Thanks for everything, coming soon for sure!

This is a luxury boutique hotel, situated on the lake at the end of a 2km access dirt road and about 15mins drive from Bacalar Town. It's brand new so everything looks great, the rooms are well designed and the beds are particularly comfortable. The surroundings are stunning, the views from the rooms are great and you can really feel the relative isolation of being away from everything and in the midst of the jungle. Service was exceptional, there was nothing that was too much for them. This isn't for everyone though. The pool is on the small side, the wifi is unreliable, the hot water in the shower lasts for 5mins before having to wait for it to warm up again, there are plenty of mosquitos and the pier and seating areas are limited in size. You're also away from it all so should be prepared to travel back and forth, or alternatively take a break from civilisation for a few days - it's a good opportunity to do so. Also, even though the lake is truly amazing, we were a bit disappointed by the colour of the water, which was deeper blue than what we expected - it's only that brighter lighter blue in the southern half of the lake. The restaurant is a bit average and expensive, but it operated separately from the hotel so would be unfair to rate them down because of it. Staff at the restaurant are lovely, service is great and I wish I could say nicer things about the food but it was just poor value compared to anything in town, including the top end restaurants. There are also too many things on the menu to be good given the low volume of clientele - I'd recommend them to cut the menu right down and do just a few things well enough, maybe then they can command the prices they're after.
