We've stayed here on previous visits to Benalla because we are a two-child family and this is one of the few local motels that provide two rooms and laundry facilities. We're aware of the ravages of Covid and labour shortages, but over time we've noted a distinct decline in the maintenance of this Motel, which starts with a massive hole in the guest carpark and old furniture piled up in the carports. When we arrived (at 2:30 pm) there was a sign on the office door, giving a number to call. My wife called this number several times before getting an answer, and we waited some time for the staff member to arrive. The grounds are poorly maintained, with the pool area and playground in disrepair. The gardens around our unit (adjacent units) were shot through with weeds, and there was a pile of rotting fruit on the path to the front of our unit. The cleanliness of the unit was okay, but there was dust on top of doors and cobwebs/dust behind the washing machine and dryer. The washing machine had a broken knob and missing supports, making it very difficult to use. The management requires guests to wash all dishes before leaving, which grates a little at $205 a night and no dishwasher. As a comparison, for $260 a night we stayed in an immaculate two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit in central Melbourne, with a dishwasher, all mod cons and a fabulous view over the Docklands.
