Hotel Roca Mar

The Rocomar Hotel in Madeira is in a great location - the ocean views are fantastic, and being able to dive straight into the ocean is something you do not often get the opportunity to do at most hotels. There are also several nice spots to lounge in the sun, either by the pools or as you walk down to the sea. However, there are several aspects which make the hotel seem more like a 3* than the advertised 4*. Although breakfast is standard like most hotels, the options at lunch and dinner are incredibly limited. The salad bar is quite limited with many hotel staples not being available, and the hot dishes were not that varied. There were often no vegan or vegetarian options, and some of the fish options were not very appetising. For a hotel on an island, the over reliance on tinned tuna was disappointing. Most of the staff were very friendly and polite, however, the bar staff in the evening at the main restaurant / bar were quite rude and dismissive. The all inclusive drinks options were limited compared to other hotels (there only served white rum and not dark) and, at times, the bar staff seemed to avoid those who were all inclusive for those who were paying for each round of drinks purchased. The Wi-Fi often was not working (or working very slowly) but allowances can be made for this. The A/C in the room broke on the forth night and when reception were informed, the response was “I cannot do anything about that”. It took a further three days and another visit to reception for it to eventually be fixed. There are many good aspects to the hotel, one being the second bar by the pool, and the rooms are comfy and spacious. A good place to stay for the week, but maybe for bed and breakfast only. There were a number of nice restaurants in the local areas, as well as Funchal itself, which are well worth a visit. Overall, a good base for exploring Funchal and the rest of the island.

Fantastyczny hotel! Widok z restauracji z tarasu sztos do potęgi. Niedaleko hotelu na końcu promenady można wybrać się na klif poza szlakiem.

This hotel complex is beautiful!! It is clean, safe and the views from every corner are stunning. It started off a bit rough, as we arrived at 11pm and unfortunately only Luis was on duty. He really needs customer service training. We upgraded to a seaview room at a higher price so upon checkin I asked if our room was seaview. His reply was if “that is what you booked then you got it”. Our ac was not working and the room was boiling. Luis was not helpful at all. After seeing the room, we told him we booked a 28 metre room. And our room was tiny. His reply “i don’t carry a measuring tape, some rooms are big and some are small”. Anyway we gave up, unpacked and went to bed. In the morning, we went to reception and she was so helpful! She said the room we booked was not available but she could move us to Galomar. From then on our stay was amazing. We were slightly annoyed that we had to repack and move as we had to wait for the new room to be ready at 1pm. So we did lose a morning. Not ideal when we only had two full days there. Everything else was excellent. The restaurants, the pools and the room. Just a note that the LIDO area by the ocean is public. Meaning that you will not get chairs/umbrella at that level (unless you go super early). But there are more near the other pool. We loved the Galomar and highly recommend you get a seaview room there.

We very much enjoyed our stay here. It’s part of a resort of three hotels that share the same facilities. We had two rooms both with a lovely sea view and balcony. The small kitchenette was basic and a tiny bit limited but ok for basic cooking. Only one room had a coffee machine. We only ate once in the main self-service restaurant which was enjoyable but slightly overpriced. We loved happy hour at the bar and also enjoyed the evening entertainment. All the staff were very helpful though the waiting time at reception could be long as there was generally only one person on the desk. We hired a car were able to park for free on the street outside the hotel and the hotel has a car park (€7.50/day). There are a few shops within walking distance. There are quite a few steps around the hotels though I think most areas are accessible by ramp or lift, but possibly not the pools. Thanks for a wonderful holiday.

Overall I would say that both the hotel and resort are very quiet and chilled. If you are looking to relax with a bit of peace then this hotel is for you. If you want a lively resort or a hotel with lots of activities then this might not be your thing. It was maybe also early in the season so I cannot comment if it gets more active ;-) We went all inclusive for a week and it was fantastic value. Most drinks and all food is included which made things so much easier. We had to use the buffet for breakfast and dinner which got a little repetitive but you could use the al la carte for 50% discount on food (plus all inclusive drinks) for dinner on Tue and Fri. The pool bar menu was great for lunch though and branded ice creams were included. There were very few on the all inclusive package and I got the impression it was quite a new thing for the hotel. There was never an issue getting a sunbed each day. Maybe again as it's early in the season and the weather was a little mixed - a few sunny days but a few overcast days. Pool towels are provided but cost 1 Euro to exchange during the stay. The staff were wonderful - so helpful. A real asset to the hotel. The resort is also spotless - the cleaners and pool guys work tirelessly all day to ensure this. The only criticism I would have is that the pool bar seemed a little understaffed most days which meant longer waits. Our room was very spacious and had a beautiful sea view. We paid a little extra for this and it was worth it. One of the days, after zero daytime entertainment, the staff arranged a Children's Day which was wonderful. It was just a shame it went from nothing to amazing back to nothing. I am used to TUI/First Choice holidays where they have a full daytime activity package, including my favourite aqua aerobics, but there was nothing here at this time of year. The evening entertainment was also a bit hit and miss. Some great musical acts but some more dubious acts such as a puppet show and a man with a casio keyboard. The free shuttle to Funchal was a useful addition. Needs to be booked 48 hours in advance but was punctual and we had a great day in Funchal. We did no other trips. We did hear people who rented a car enjoyed a bit more freedom to explore the island. I would recommend this hotel and we're very grateful to the staff for making it a great week. We were sad to leave!

Bardzo dobry tani hotel. Położony w pobliżu lotniska, przystanek autobusowy naprzeciwko hotelu. Można dojechać do centrum Funchal, a stamtąd w innym kierunku. Śniadanie za małą dopłatą, jak dla mnie smaczne - tzw kontynentalne, ale każdy znajdzie coś dla siebie. Można dokupić obiady za 25€/os. Basen wewnętrzny i zewnętrzny. Bar koło basenu, ręczniki kąpielowe przy barze. Pokoje czyste i komfortowe, obsługa miła i pomocna. Jeżeli będę wracał na Maderę z pewnością wybiorę ten hotel. Klimatyzacja w pokoju, choć nie używałem. Mogę z pewnością polecić ten hotel.
