Our flight arrived at the airport late at night. Even under normal circumstances, it takes almost 2 hours to get to the hotel. However, our bus driver and guide decided to stop and aid another bus that had broken down on the road. They claimed that it would only be for 5 minutes, and it turned out to be over 45 minutes! Unfortunately, there was no washroom on our bus. There were some people who desperately needed to relieve themselves, but they were told to wait until they reached their respective resorts. Once we reached Grand Memories Hotel, we had to wait another 30 minutes for a golf cart to come pick us up along with our luggage and drive us to the Sanctuary section of the resort. The roads are too narrow for the bus to take us all the way to our section of the resort. There is a bar for drinks and a 24-hour kitchen that provides you with simple pizzas as you wait to complete the check-in process. Out of the two rooms that we had booked, one (#5748) was in an appalling state. It was damp and moldy with broken and dilapidated furniture. The towels and the bedding in this room were full of stains and holes. Both rooms had large cockroaches. On our first night, all three of us slept in the better room on a single king-size bed. Each room was supposed to come with one welcome bottle of rum (one for each room), water bottle (replenished daily), a soft drink bottle (replenished every other day), and two cans of beer (also replenished daily) in the fridges. On the first day, these beverages were only present in the more decent room (#5742). We managed to get the dilapidated room changed to a nicer one (#5731) the next afternoon. It came with two full-size beds which made it ideal for all of us to sleep comfortably in the same room if we wished. We had to keep requesting for the drinks that were not initially present, as well as the drinks that were meant to be replenished from time to time in the second room. Our butler, Uziel, was not very helpful in ensuring that this second room was restocked with the required drinks. We were given the excuse that very few of our belongings were present in the second room and for this reason the people who come in to replenish the fridge think this room is unoccupied. If that were true, why were the tips that we left in the fridge and room taken every single day? The mosquitoes in this resort were out of control! Swarms of these blood-sucking insects would follow us around, especially during dinner time. We were applying a lot of insect repellant, but these creatures still managed to bite all three of us (on every exposed body part) every single day of our stay. Other guests, including some regular VIP guests, showed us their bites which were even worse than ours! The à la carte meals were good. The staff were mostly friendly and gave good service. The best thing was that you were allowed to add to your meal by getting extra stuff from the nearby buffet restaurant. We didn’t mind the buffet food although it
