We had a wonderful stay at the Gilpin Hotel and Lake House. We had booked a junior suite which came with its own hot tub in a little garden area. Positives - The biggest plus of the Gilpin is its staff. After three nights it felt like we had made friends with so many of the people who worked there. Firstly there's Lorraine who welcomed us at the front desk. She was a pleasure to deal with and, upon raising an issue with her, she was diligent in arranging for those issues to be addressed with the relevant staff. Also, two of the waiting staff we wanted to specifically call out are Grace and Caroline- both of them struck the perfect balance of fun and friendly mixed with the formalities you would expect of a 5* hotel. And lastly, to the spa Olivia did a great job in all of the treatments we had. Other notable mentions: Charnice and Laura. - The decor feels luxurious and very relaxing. Very suitable for the festive season. - There are two restaurants, Source and Spice. My fiancé and I are quite fussy so we mainly ate at Spice but we really enjoyed the food there. - The hotel is situated in a beautiful part of the country. I won't put it as a negative but I would say the hotel is most suited to those that can drive. It doesn't have easy access to nearby towns or walk paths unless you can drive.  - After raising said issues earlier, the staff were very proactive in remedying the situation remediating the situation with us. It was nice because rather than wait for a complaint about anything in particular you can tell they just want to show goodwill proactively. A fantastic customer service experience in that regard.  Negatives - On the aforementioned issues, I will say the front of house staff such as Lorraine did a fantastic job of listening to our comments and delegating to the appropriate team for action. I will say however, the team responsible (cleaners) for addressing said concerns did not address the issue at hand in an adequate way on first attempt. I will note the front of house team could not have been more understanding and the issue was ultimately resolved. - Inconsistent table service at times, particularly in Spice, one of the mornings we had breakfast and in the lounge area. - Due to where the Source dining room and kitchen is in relation to the lounge, it could sometimes feel like you were interrupting the service staff when you had to walk through the service area. This is a fairly minor point but just worth mentioning. Overall - We would recommend people consider the Gilpin as a holiday destination, especially if you are looking to relax. We have enjoyed it as a festive getaway. We wouldn't describe it as seamless an experience as some other 5* hotels we have been in but there is an overall sense of warmth and friendliness which is not always the case in very formal establishments, and the staff have overall been the greatest pleasure to get to know.

Excellent staff and service. The room is good size , nw, fresh and clean. Breakfast is buffet style with nice view, one of the best I ever had.

We've been to this hotel many times over the last few years, mainly in Autumn when the leaves are changing colour & the waterfalls are flowing. Amazing peaceful location with Fell Foot Park nearby & the chain ferry over to Hawshead & the undeveloped side of Windermere & beyond. New owner this year & refurbishment is starting, though it seems the amazing character of this old hotel will not be spoilt. Warm , clean & cosy. The motivation of the staff this Trip has been amazing. The best ever for can do. The Polish chef is the main reason for our return. He & his talented, friendlyteam team provide really interesting fresh local food & menus & the cooking is as good as some exceptional places in France. Lovely indoor pool & spa & outside. Bottom rooms on the lake are amazing. Open your doors & admire the views & air. Package breaks are available & good value. We will return next Autumn.

I booked this very last minute as a break away for myself and hubby. Very quaint old pub which has been extended. We stayed in room 7 which was adequate, we were initially worried that we would be disturbed by people going to/from their rooms given we were right by the top of the stairs but this was unfounded. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. I had disturbed sleep due to a “droning noise” which was constant throughout the night. We couldn’t figure out where the noise was coming from, we initially thought it was chiller compressors but they weren’t near our room. I mentioned it to reception on check out, they said they would get maintenance to check as it could be the chimney which ran up through the room.

My family had a great time. The view was stunning. The staff was helpful. The surrounding was great.

Very enjoyable stay; Ben and the front of house team were all very friendly and helpful, the food was great and the hotel is well looked-after. The setting and views are lovely and there is plenty of room in the lounges, restaurant and bar to ensure you don't feel crowded by fellow guests and can make yourselves comfortable if the Cumbrian rain keeps you indoors for a spell. The rooms are well equipped (and warm!) and feel good quality, the garden space and terrace are a good size (too cold to be on when we were there, but look appealing for a summer stay).

We'd been really looking forward to our stay, which was a treat from my husband for my birthday. Both of us had visited before but not since it was re-styled and we had picked Linthwaite so that we could try another Michelin-starred restaurant at the Henrock restaurant there. Sadly, although the hotel itself is lovely, and some of the staff were excellent, several things really let it down. On arrival we noticed a small sign stating 'reception' pointing to the left that was attached to the right-hand door of a set of double doors, so we assumed we needed to go through the left hand door. As we opened it, rather than a hello, or can I help, someone just barked at us that 'reception's that way'. Check-in was then slightly odd as we were told we'd be shown around the hotel, which would've been a nice touch had one of the two staff attending to us thought to offer to take our bags to our room or to keep them at reception whilst we were shown round. Instead, we had to keep hold of them which then meant the staff member showing us round kept saying 'you've got your bags with you so I won't show you this, can't show you that' etc, rendering the 'tour' pointless. Once we had settled into our room we went for a drink at the bar. No-one was behind the bar when we walked in so we were just stood at the bar looking at what was on offer and discussing what we might order. After around 1 minute, the barman walk led in and again, no hello, welcome, or what can I get you etc, just 'sit down please' . We were puzzled and my husband said 'could we have a drink' and the barman repeated again 'sit down please'. When we said we'd like to sit at the bar, he seemed annoyed. No other customers were around. The food at the Henrock restaurant was really good - we had the tasting menu and the service broadly good too, but twice during the meal we had to wait long enough for something that we said to each other 'they must've forgotten...' We also had an incident later in the evening where we were trying to get out to the outdoor seating area. We had seen another couple struggle with the door earlier. After several attemots, eventually I opened the door but had to use such force I injured my hand as it caught between the handle and frame. My fingers are still swollen a day later and it's sore to grip anything. It really shouldn't be this difficult for guests to access the outside tables, especially as the door in question is a fire exit. Finally, we were told on arrival that our breakfast would be at 9am. In all honesty, I couldn't remember for sure if they had contacted me and asked us to choose a time in advance or if 9am was dictated to us, but in any case, since we made the hotel booking, a work commitment came up for my husband that meant 9am would be too late, so we asked at reception after dinner whether we could change it to 8am. Without even checking any records, we were told no as the hotel was fully booked. Not 'i'll see what i can do' or 'I'm sorry but...', jus

Been to Lindeth Howe 4 or 5 times now and I make no apologies for writing another review. This place is outstanding in every way from the staff to the food and the bedrooms we cannot fault anything. Yes it isn't the cheapest place around but as the saying goes you get what you pay for and it is worth every penny. Based on Beatrix Potter as she used to own Lindeth, it is quirky without going over the top. Just one fault this time round hence the 4 star instead of 5 star when we arrived back after a walk into Bowness people were sat outside because of the nice weather. When these people went inside they left cups and glasses on the tables. The cups etc were still there the following which isn't a nice sight to look out over first thing in a morning. Might be a trivial thing but let the place down on our visit this time. This won't stop us coming back but these little things need to be addressed to keep the standards up.
