This was my first time back since my military days and having travelled through Germany in the 3 years I was here, I haven’t changed my opinion that Cologne is the best city to visit. This time I was here for the FIBO fair and stayed at the Mercure for the first time. As expected it was first class and the hospitality of its staff was impeccable. The hotel is out to the west which means a 20-30 minute tram ride into the main area around the cathedral and river but once you master the payment system you will enjoy the experience, with the trams being on time throughout. The only criticism is that being a fitness person and witnessing others like me staying at the hotel, the gym was poor consisting of only 3 cardio machines in a tiny room. A small set of dumbbells would be a welcome addition and would have justified a 5 star instead of the 4 I have given. Otherwise well done to all the staff for a highly enjoyable stay. I stayed at the hotel a few times on business trips. For that purposes it's perfectly suitable, easy to reach by car and with some shopping and eating possibilities nearby. For tourism it's a bit of a stretch but there is a direct tram to the city center nearby. I enjoyed the breakfast, it has all that a breakfast should need. The quality of the restaurant food was also good for the price.

We stayed here for 3nights and got a great deal! The hotel is super easy to find, literally when you come out of train station and are looking straight at The Dom at the bottom of steps you turn right and keep walking in a straight line. It takes about 10 mins!! We didn’t have breakfast so I can’t comment on this. The rooms are dated, dark woods everywhere but everything you need and all clean etc. We had a room by the lift on the 4th floor at the back of the hotel. Lovely and quiet. Didn’t hear 1 guest or any traffic! We planned our trip and decided to save taxi costs and brave the train. So so easy!!! The train from the airport - We went to the ticket machine and entered Koln HBF, ticket was 3.20 euros and it took about 14mins. When we left the hotel we walked again back to the station and entered Koln/Bonn airport and it tells you which platform and off you go straight to the terminal building! Excellent weekend. Be sure to go to Cafe Extra Blatt in the old town for a buffet breakfast. We found it by accident on the Sunday and it was a super find! Very busy but we only waited 5mins for a table and stayed a few hours!! Bei Oma Kleinmann is another fabulous place to eat! Their Schnitzels are the best!!! A 20min walk from the hotel but totally worth it! Book in advance though or be prepared to wait.

Stayed for 3 nights, it's around a 15 minute walk from the Main station or Cathedral, two routes you can take, one is past the Marriott and music college, the other is up a nice pedestrian street with bars, cafes and shops on it. The hotel is in a nice urban peaceful area, 2 mins to the river front. The hotel is a 4 star officially but without a safe, fridge, or wifi I would only rate it as a 3 star. My room on the 4th floor was quiet and very clean, good storage, good bathroom with toiletries. Nice comfy bed, very big room. Check in was quick and easy although the room wasn't ready until 3pm, I could leave my bag in storage. I was in the block opposite and the restaurant was in the main complex, there is parking should you have a car. Definitely recommend it, if you don't mind the walk to the centre.
