The Captain Whidbey Inn is a dump. I would rate it zero stars if that was an option on this site. Do not waste your time or your money. Better to sleep in the back seat of your car. Our water view private bath lodge room cost $383 before taxes and fees. We arrived to find the worst excuse of an inn ever. I am a travel agent, and we have traveled all over the world so I have experienced wonderful and rotten. This was the worst. The lighting for the room is a floor lamp with a bulb attached at the end and no shade, a round globe beside the bed coming out of the wall and a hanging round light from the 50's. The linens are fresh from the thrift shop. Towels are thread bare. There was an extremely large tree limb lying on the property with 3 orange cones around it but it was laying there for 3 days. When we left, it was still around. Lots of kids on the property so I hope none of them got hurt. When we checked in and got our room, my husband said, "I specifically asked for second floor." Desk clerk said, "well, you got first, hahahah." I was told 3 guys from CA own the property and Columbia Hospitality manages the property. I think it is time the owners and property manager meet at the property to review what a dump they have on their hands. Or maybe, it's just a cash cow for them, and they don't care??? Prove me wrong, please.

The natural beauty of the grounds was very nice. However, the rooms are so plain, I honestly don't know how they can charge so much. I didn't understand and assumed for that price that it would be a more "luxury" county experience. It was really just spartan. There was a note at the desk when we tried to check in that they were in the store. "Ring the bell" and someone will come. We waited 10 minutes after ringing, then left a note we were in the bar waiting. 15 minutes later someone came. Meanwhile, it took more than that to get our 4 drinks. The restaurant was small, and the menu limited, so we decided to eat elsewhere (and had a fabulous meal in Oak Harbor). Our Lagoon rooms had almost no furniture or fixings. The bed was low to the ground (a mattress on a board about the same height as a boxspring), and the mattress was very soft. The only other place to sit was a very narrow wood bench along a wall, the same low height as the bed. In place of curtains were canvas blinds, that didn't really hug the window. Lots of gaps and light, and lacking privacy. The bathroom was adequate, the towels small and rough. The red message light on the phone kept blinking, the front desk said we had no message and she didn't know why it was still blinking. It blinked from when we got there until when we left two days later. One of the lights by bedside didn't work. The one bedside light that did work wasn't bright enough to read by. The room was cold. I set the thermostat to 68, but the room never warmed at all. If you wanted to use the firepit by the lagoon, you needed to carry wood from the main building. If a nice, nature environment is all it takes for you to be happy for $400/night, than you will be happy here.

Advice to anyone planning a wedding here: make sure your guests know what they are signing up for in terms of accommodations, including the lack of privacy in the Historic Lodge and the fact that any event in the lodge (which I imagine are common) sounds like the party is in your own room if you're staying in the lodge. I'm reviewing from the experience of someone who did not know what I was signing up for with the Historic Lodge, as I was assigned that room for a wedding and given no context, i.e. the fact that it had paper thin walls and shared bathrooms, one men's and one women's for the 12 rooms on the floor. To use the toilet privately you have to use the bathrooms downstairs in the restaurant. The Historic Lodge is more like a bed and breakfast minus breakfast being included. You can hear every conversation in the other rooms, halls, deck, and lawn out front clear as day. After traveling 11 hours to get here, I was near tears when I couldn't nap while so exhausted because of a hair dryer, footsteps, etc. I cannot emphasize enough how thin the walls are; it was as if the person next door was using the hair dryer right next to me. The shared bathrooms' shower situation was not private enough for my comfort level (clear glass door and loose curtains parting in the middle that could easily be brushed aside if someone were unsure if the shower was occupied) so I actually didn't shower while I was here :( The queen rooms are quite small but, from what I saw, some of the larger rooms in the lodge looked lovely. I understand many people seek this out and love it; I think the lack of privacy and quiet would be more tolerable if you were traveling from a closer distance and had a strong interest in the historic aspect. Pros: the beds are comfy, the room and bathrooms were clean, the decor is adorable, we saw tons of jellyfish right off the dock, the staff were mostly warm and kind, and the breakfast galette I had at the little coffee shop was really good. I think if you stayed in the lagoon rooms or cabins you would have a much better experience. This review is primarily written so other weddings or buyouts inform their guests about what they are getting. When you read "hotel," you assume you'll have your own bathroom and walls of normal thickness, especially for $309/night. We did not discover this on the website until it was too late and we had committed.

Captain Whidbey is a really magical property filled with Madrona trees right on peaceful Penn Cove. The historic lodge is adorable albeit creaky but what do you expect for a historic lodge? The s'mores and chess in the lobby were a wonderful way to wind down the evening. The views from the restaurant patio were incredible, and the food was impressive. Space on the lawn to have an afternoon glass of wine was so perfect. I just wish the rooms had a few more small touches to make them more comfortable. I'm allergic to dogs and there are many in the guest rooms and I noticed some allergic reactions to the linens. Perhaps separating rooms for pets would help with this. The rooms in August were a little stuffy - a fan would have been very helpful. Robes in the rooms to enjoy the sauna would have also been a nice touch - they show up in the photography for the inn but were not provided. For the price you pay per night ($350+) these are small touches I would have really appreciated and would have made it feel more worth the value.

The 1–2-star reviews are accurate. I had at least 4-star expectations for the price I paid. As a single I splurged & paid more than $350. per night (not including fees and taxes) for a with private bathroom - yes it was August, but way overpriced for this dump. No coffee in the room, glad I brought my own, they lent me a water kettle. Whoever owns this property needs to hire a gardener. No excuse for the unkept grounds. Just walking in the door was a shock. See photo of the door mat. What was good about my stay: the bed and pillows were comfortable. You'll have to keep the drapes down (bye-bye view) when you are in the room as the balcony is shared. I would question the last time the ("hand woven"?) bed throw" was washed. Then there's the random, thrift store quality lighting, Worst of all: the price! What a rip-off! See photos below. This place needs an overhaul!

Love this place so much- it is so special and mindfully curated. Variety of rooms make each visit a unique adventure. I've stayed 4 times now, in a different room type each time. The restaurant with view of the cove is just PERFECT and they brought us blankets while dining outside. rustic chic hospitality NOT TO BE MISSED

Really sweet place! I would have appreciated more information from the front desk agent and a more welcome check in. I checked in late, so that may have been part of the problem. The bartender was excellent. The room was small but really cozy. Great view of the bay. Parking was easy.

This hotel is unreal. The restaurant is amazing. The room was so cute. There's all kinds of fun amenities on the grounds (pond, tree net, SAUNA, yoga room with a big tv...) and even the bathroom had really nice body products.

This place is so overrated and overpriced it's hard to describe. We stayed in a lagoon room. Incredibly dated, no amenities (no fridge, no TV, no microwave, etc.). Poor lighting, we could hear everything above and next to us. I agree with someone else who commented about lack of privacy. We were on the first level, so couldn't leave the blinds up because everyone who walks past your room can see right in. This place felt like an overpriced camp. Housekeeping never came even though we arranged to have them come one time in our four night stay.

Was looking forward to a romantic stay here and had gotten good feedback from friends, but it left much to be desired. The cost for the lagoon room was way inflated for what you get. It is very, very bare bones in there. A bed, a bench, a noise machine, and that's about it. The tiles on the bathroom floor were freezing cold. The first level of the lagoon rooms have next to no privacy looking straight into your bedroom unless you leave the blinds down, which blocks the only good thing about the room (the view). We didn't even get robes in our room, not sure why. We had a reservation made for us for dinner by the front desk, but when we talked to the hostess, no reservation was made. Luckily there was room at the bar, otherwise we would've been screwed. Food was decent, but again overpriced. Multiple menu items were either out or not being served anymore but still advertised on the menu. Groundskeeper was grumpy and said a passive aggressive comment about our dog when I briefly let her run around with on her leash on when there was literally no one else around in the giant field. Literally an hour later another couple was out throwing tennis balls and having their doodle run around off leash all around the field with no one saying anything. The whole experience just left a bad taste in my mouth. Wouldn't come back or recommend.

Captain Whidbey Inn is a historic Inn full of charm and character. My husband and I spent an evening here and it was charming and warm. We had dinner here and stayed the night upstairs in the main house. The food was good, service was awesome during dinner and our stay upstairs was an adventure. There is a shared bathroom in the main inn which was very clean. Our room was above the bar downstairs so we heard last call at 8 pm. The voices did not die down till well after 9 pm. There are no TV's in the rooms but there is a white noise maker in the room which really helped us early risers get to sleep. Although we did not have dinner reservations, they got us in. The ground are beautiful and quiet.

Bed was supper comfortable; cabin was tastefully decorated. Bathroom is small but no big deal. Bathroom is small but so was the cabin. we enjoyed just hanging out in the cabin. We stayed for leap day so it was cold and raining. Cabin was nice and warm because of the gas fireplace.

Very expensive for the quality of the room. No microwave, no TV, no refrigerator, and the walls were so thin we could hear the children talking in the next room. It wasn't put together well, low craftsmanship on the building and cheap materials. $300 for the first week night, and $400 for the weekend. I wouldn't recommend this spot to anyone. Good view, but Whidbey is full of good views.
