Chaoge Youth Hostel (Dali Ancient Town South Gate)

It is located south of the town. But the noises is far from the town. They provide washer and dryer. And even projector in individual room.

Excellent hostel, I really enjoyed my stay! Really nice and helpful staff with English-speakers. The buildings are in the traditional local style but with modern furnishings - stylish and cosy with nice common areas indoor and outdoor. Excellent location in the ancient town at the edge near the South Gate down an alleyway off a main pedestrian road area with lots of shops and restaurants. It took about an hour to get there by bus number 4 from Dali city railway station. It was about a ten minute walk from the bus stop with some cobblestone roads once you get to the ancient town which can be a bit rough with suitcases. The staff gave me suggestion for where to eat locally and sent details via WeChat. The hostel runs activities and does lunch and dinner for 20 yuan which you can sign up for and is a nice way to meet other guests. All the other guests were Chinese so there was a language barrier for me but we still had some nice chats through translator or if they spoke English. The female 8-bed room was nice and spacious with large windows and it was cleaned regularly. Beds were comfortable and you have to make them yourself. There are lockers which your key card opens. The toilet is open with glass sliding doors so you can hear noise, but it was clean and I liked the western style toilet and that the shower a sink and toilet were all separate for convenience. You can hear the music playing from the nearby shops on repeat for most of the day but it didn’t sound too bad and I got used to it. They offer earplugs and toothbrush at the front desk - I’m glad I had earplugs. There is a laundry area which is free to use with washing machines and washing powder and dryers and plenty of space to hang clothes. There’s also a cafe in the main lobby/common area and it’s a good place to do work with power sockets. And there’s free filtered water and a fridge you can use.  I’d definitely come back!

Amazing hostel right in the middle of the ancient city. Great communal areas and good vibes made a bunch of friends to go drinking with.

Upon checked in to my room, I noticed that the lock of the bathroom (inside the room) is broken and that means the door can't be closed at all. With six people sharing the room, I was uncomfortable doing my business/taking a shower without the needed privacy. The light in my bed was also broken. I asked for a different room but the reception said there was no other room available, so they let me moved to another bed with a functional light in the same room instead.Thanks for that. As for the toilet, I had to go to the backyard and use the common one. But that's ok. The lobby area is very messy full of people's personal stuff, so it looks nothing like the advertised photos. They offer free laundry which is appreciated but the clothes hanging area was next to the cats house and the house blows the air smell of cat poops directly to the area. This makes the whole area as well as the clothes smelly. Overall the place has great potential. It just needs some minor repairs and regular cleaning and organising.

Volunteers were really helpful in the hostel. And atmosphere was friendly and chill. But guests don’t throw out their trash and even if personal clean place it’s anyway dirty. And also they were noisy at night

A great hostel, very well located in Dali old town, with a very friendly staff, and perfect to meat other travellers with common areas that are very enjoyable ! Would definitely come back here if I come back to Dali !

Had a good stay, although when there is rain there seem to be some leaks in the womens bathroom.

This is a beautiful place with a great atmosphere. The outdoor areas are excellent for relaxing and socialising, and the staff make an effort to bring everyone together. The rooms are also spacious and comfortable. However, the cleanliness of the bathrooms leaves a lot to be desired. They were often dirty, out of toilet paper, or not working properly, which made using them quite inconvenient.
