Friendly and helpful staff. Mild stains found on couch’s fabric. Hot/cold water unsteady.

Really nice stay with family. Good facilities, pools and outdoors. Food and drinks really good and a lot of variety. Staff excellent, really nice and available. The rooms starts showing need for modernisation.

So poor, not 4/5 star in slightest. We moved here in last minute panic when facilities were closed at the hotel we had booked. It was a big mistake. We paid extra for a delux superior room. I think it must have been the mould and stains we paid for as the previous cleaning had left layers of dust so the extra money wasn’t for cleaning. It was dated which I don’t mind if it is clean- it wasn’t. We were in room 607 with a view of an apartment block, a rubble site and a glimpse of the sea. We could hear the sea and wind as it howled between the buildings. The dining room is like a holiday camp. The food recycled from meal to meal. We are one dinner and didn’t bother again. It was so noisy and not helped by the staff throwing and clattering dishes and cutlery constantly. I despise having my plate taken when my partner is still eating . It happened every meal. Breakfast plenty of choice the omelettes and pancakes were ok. And the fresh fruit also good. Lunch we stuck to salad and the pool side bar had the same food out for hours kept gently warm. At no point did I see any temperate checks or shelf life on food. McDonald’s has much better food safety. Drinks available from a help yourself station so if you like quantity and not care about quality you’ll be fine. And plastic glasses … The reception tried to be helpful which included ordering us a taxi - 8 euros more than the same trip by Bolt. And refusing to allow us to share a cab with another couple. We had to have separate ones. You can get the excellent local bus service from the road at the top for €2 . They give you a glass of Madeira wine on arrival which was lovely but I think they hope the shot of alcohol will colour your view. The bed was rock hard. I heard you could have a mattress topper so I asked for one - it never arrived. I try not to leave negative reviews and say nothing if I am up happy but please look at other hotels than this one and save yourself the heartache.

The room was spacious and bright overlooking the sea, we could forgive the room was a little tired, as it was perfect for our needs. The staff were very helpful from the guy that showed us to our room, to waiting staff who were very attentive, nothing was to much trouble. We liked the style of the hotel which was very traditional, in a perfect position just outside Funchal, and so not subject to the noise of the city. The food was varied and plentiful, the house wines and cocktails were acceptable. Special mention for Leticia for her wonderful back massage, and Marlene on reception who was very helpful.

Lovely hotel. Nice location but a good hour walk into Funchal centre. Very hilly. Pools at hotel nice & clean but not heated sadly. Indoor pool not heated but sauna near so you can warm up after. Food was really good overall. Bathroom has glass door ! Which wasn’t good when staying with your son. This really could do with changing. Rooms a nice size & very clean. Staff all nice. Would stay again

We had a 4 night break in the Pestana Royal and we were Royally looked after. Staff were great and we had a fantastically relaxed stay. Food was great, fresh salads, always good choices, fish, meats and vegetarian. Pools were great no rushing for Sunbeds, fresh towels when you need them, something for everyone. Entertainment every night,

The hotel is very well maintained and looks beautiful from the outside and inside. The rooms are very comfortable, and a very good nights sleep… the best I have had in many months. The staff was very friendly and helpful during our stay. The gardens and swimming pool have a great view and are a real pleasure to walk around. A big thank you to the staff ! We appreciate your hard work.

Having read some negative reviews about this hotel on trip advisor I was hesitant in booking, however these were completely unfounded. We have just spent a glorious week being very well looked after at the Pestana Royal Hotel. Every member of staff was courteous and wanted to make one's stay as relaxed as possible. Katarina was particularly kind and helpful and went the extra mile to make sure arrangements went smoothly re our chosen excursions through 'Feeling Madeira' agency. The hotel facilities are good, the AI drinks package is excellent and the food options beautifully prepared and well presented. This was our second holiday with Jet2 and each time we have been impressed by Jet2 staff welcome and courtesy. Edouardo our holiday representative in Madeira was excellent. Jet2 staff always seem very attentive to travellers needs. Highly recommended.

The hotel is situated to the west of Funchal centre, with a free shuttle bus in and out of town, but also by the main road for a good cheap public bus service. The hotel has a whole host of amenities, for both adults and children, so it's a perfect place for spending all your time but with having the option to explore the interesting and beautiful island too. The rooms are comfortable, with a good sized open plan bathroom and large walk-in shower. The powerful air conditioning unit was very welcome. All the staff were helpful, assisting a relaxing and stress-free holiday. The Guest Service Manager, Karina, helped us book a couple of excellent tours across the West and East of the island - and her warm character with encouraging smile were a delight each day! We would definitely come here again.

No complaints helpful staff rooms a bit dated with few sockets but they are only for sleeping and washing …. Food choice excellent in buffet restaurant and high quality Reading some earlier reviews was not sure what to expect - pleasantly surprised at our experience

Highly recommend a stay here. Delicious food in the buffet with musicians playing at breakfast time. Hot and cold snacks outside of buffet, Everywhere seemed clean and well cared for. Lovely gardens. Lift down to nearby beach which had beautiful sea front walks. Easy access to nearby shops. Walk to Funchal centre approx 2 miles and similar distance to the Fisherman’s village. Our room was spacious with a view overlooking the sea and nearby hillside, Staff very friendly. Pools warm and clean.

Very clean room with a fabulous view. Plenty of choice food wise. Welcoming attentive staff. Outside main dining room is the best vending machine coffee I’ve ever tasted, there is also a popcorn machine in reception. Tip - You’ll need to use your room key to access the lift from the beach.

Had a lovely week at the Pestana, yes room was a bit tired but very spacious and we had a partial sea view but this didn’t bother us as we were hardly in our room. Pool area was lovely with lots of sunbeds and seating by the pool bar. We were glad of the indoor bar on the couple of occasions the weather turned. Drinks were ok and we liked the help yourself wine and beer stations. There is a courtesy bus laid on by the hotel which takes you to the port area but we purchased the yellow bus tickets online and used them daily to get in and around Funchal’s more out of the way attractions (bus stop conveniently outside of hotel). The local buses are very economical too. The only downside was the restaurant area seemed very cramped and wasn’t very relaxing. We tried both speciality restaurants and the Italian was our favourite. Other than that and for what we paid we thought it was very good value for money.
