Butler House

We loved our stay here. The hotel is small and cozy, staffed by some of the most friendly and professional staff you will ever meet. They are in the heart of Kilkenny, only steps from the Kilkenny Castle, numerous shops, and lively pubs and restaurants. We had breakfast in the restaurant and drinks at the bar and were so delighted with everything. If in Kilkenny, you simply cannot beat Butler House! And be sure to enjoy the gardens behind the hotel. They are amazing!

Every single thing about this hotel is beautifully done. The Butler House, once a family home, is a fine, elegant hotel in the heart of Kilkenny. While the lobby is simple, the staff was very attentive, friendly and helpful. Our room was gorgeous and at the head of the staircase on the second floor, overlooking the street. The bed was huge, with soft sheets and a perfect pillow. We had comfortable upholstered chairs, a large wardrobe, and the carpet was plush and soft. The bathroom was large and well appointed. Breakfast each day was held in the breakfast room, which was lovely. Each morning we were seated right at the bow window over looking the garden - so pretty! We were able to order off the menu, always a treat, and our breakfasts were delicious, piping hot and made to order. I think the backyard was my favorite part - it was a grand and well designed walled family garden with huge, old shade trees, and large lawn, shrubbery and paved pathways all around. I could imagine family's children playing in the large garden. I would stay here again and again.

Absolutely delightful experience in every respect. Quiet genteel dowager house for Kilkenny Castle that has been transformed into a hotel. Beautiful high ceilings with delicate plasterwork. Warm fires. Gorgeous views of the back garden from the breakfast room. A terrific la carte menu for breakfast, every item we tried was delicious and beautifully served. Above all the reason to stay here is the staff, who made us feel more than welcome, truly like family. Thank you Frieda, Sophie, Martin, Nicola, Iwilke and manager Lorraine. We can’t wait to visit you again. Simply WOW!!!

Very much enjoyed our 1 night stay in this lovely atmospheric and elegant house. Perfectly located, and parking available. A lift or stairs to go up to rooms, our room and bathroom was perfectly clean and lovely and quiet, Gorgeous gardens attached. The breakfast was an a la carte choice, and was very nice. All the staff very friendly. Lovely stay.

Had we known we were going to be put into the basement room,we would never have booked Butler House. Guests should be forewarned about this room and it should only be offered in emergencies, and at half the price of the upstairs rooms with garden views. It is dark, noisy, with small, high windows looking onto a wall. The guest house lacked atmosphere..no onsite dining, the bar was empty of both staff and customers. Breakfast was average. The croissant was small, cold, hard and definitely not freshly baked. We had to asked for barista coffee, which came at an extra cost. It was very disappointing experience for a Blue Book recommended place.

We had a one night stay in Butler house and arrived late. On site parking is a definite plus and we were warmly greeted. Our first impression at night was a nice hotel, with a fairly large room and bathroom, although a bit dated. Our room overlooked the street but the noise from the pubs and cars quieted down considerably that we were able to sleep with the window open. The Butler House really comes alive in the daylight! This historic building is charming with gorgeous gardens in the back and a direct walking path to the castle. Breakfast was wonderful with several hot and cold options in a pretty breakfast room with garden and castle views. We found all the staff to be friendly, welcoming and professional. We wish we could have stayed another night to explore Kilkenny more.
