Sukau Greenview Bed and Breakfast

We had a truly amazing 2-night, 3-day stay at Sukau Greenview Bed & Breakfast. From the start, communication for pick-up and drop-off was seamless and very well organized. Our room was clean, spacious, and the lodge itself was in a fantastic location right on the river. The food was good, and we were thrilled with how many animals we got to see, though we were a little disappointed to miss the elephants. However, the highlight of our stay was definitely the staff—absolutely amazing, super nice, and very personal in their approach. They really made our stay memorable. All the tours offered were relevant and well-executed. We were sad we couldn’t join the optional tour on the last day, as it was already fully booked. In the future, maybe a better booking system for the tours would help. One small suggestion: the system for selling ice creams could be improved. After 8 pm, they were no longer available, and it required calling the staff to open up. It would have been really nice to enjoy ice cream after the night tour, but unfortunately, this wasn’t possible. Everything was super organized, and we would not hesitate to stay here again. Highly recommended!

The worst customer service experience from management that I've ever had, and an incredibly poorly managed operation that puts its guests at risk. We spent two nights here with the 3D2N Kinabatangan river excursion, and most of the trip was fantastic. The boat rides themselves are fun, though brief and not very focused on finding the 'big' animals. The room was very rugged, with ants in the bathroom, but fair enough for the price. The food was actually incredible, as were the vast majority of the staff. The problems came when we were sent on a walking tour, during which the guide became lost. We spent an extra hour and a half walking in circles in the deep, off-path jungle while the guide either asked us where we thought the river might be or disappeared for 5-10 minutes at a time to unsuccessfully try to find a way out. On one of these excursions, he managed to lose us, and we had to go and find him. After almost three hours, we were finally 'rescued', only to be met with just the most cursory apologies from the senior guide team. Getting lost happens, and I don't hold the guide accountable at all - but the complete lack of safety provisions from management, with no way to track or trace a lost party, is clearly a disaster waiting to happen. When I spoke with management, they were initially hugely apologetic, but upon check out it turned out that their initial offer of a refund was in fact just a 50 ringgit note and a slice of cake, along with the morning operations manager making it very clear that they didn't feel that anything serious had actually happened. Their 'final offer' of a 10% discount  felt like a clear indication that this wasn't something they took seriously, and were unlikely to implement any changes that would stop it from happening again. Most of the staff here are great, it's not a bad price, and I'm sure the above wouldn't happen to you, so it's probably still not a bad option to see Kinabatangan. But if something does go wrong, don't expect the management to help you in the moment, or do anything to make it right after the fact.

The reason for this low rating is due to the rubbish and plastic in the jungle and the river. None of the tour operators (including this one) make any efforts to collect the rubbish or minimise pollution (noise and environmental pollution) by using E-motors on their boats. The animals were amazing but on our first tour we were actually shocked that 30 boats were backed onto each other chasing after elephants. This left us all with mixed feelings. In our operators defense the following river cruises were more relaxed and respectful of the wild animals. In addition - here as in all of Malaysia the condition of homeless dogs is heartbreaking. No efforts are made to sterilise male dogs to reduce the number of new homeless puppies being continually introduced. Basic things like water or scraps from the kitchen (these were plentiful) could help with the condition of these poor animals.
