Hotel berhampiran Dechmont Law, Livingston

The hotel was nice. We arrived on a Friday evening when there was a huge event taking place at the house. Check-in was quick and easy. Rooms were clean just a bit warm. Fortunately, we had a fan in the room. Beds were very comfy. Dinner at the restaurant was ok, nothing fancy but fine for the price. However, staff is in dire need of training. Not one single waitress/waiter was able to smile. They spoke very fast and slurred and we had to wave them to come back for further orders. When we ordered the bill, something went wrong with the card and they just walked away, mumbling something we could not understand. After 10 minutes they still did not get back to us so we had to catch them at the bar in order to clarify what happened. Turned out the card was declined and they did not make any efforts in letting us know. Which left us with a very strange feeling. Breakfast was the same, staff was not able to smile or at least look friendly. It all felt like it was a shame that they had to work. Not sure what the reason is for that as they treated all guests the same way. The next morning we were sitting in the breakfast area with the sun blinding us so we asked them to pull down the blinds but they told us they were just facade. Breakfast buffet was very poor: Kellogs cereal bags (the small ones) 3 bananas, 2 old apples and some grapes.

It is rather odd to get to this hotel passing through an industrial area, being so close to the airport (10-15min car) and yet arriving in a countryside type of environment with sheeps and trees. An oasis of tranquility close to the airport. Perfect! Large indoor pool with steam and sauna rooms. Large hot tube with jets. Good for relaxing after driving. Only negative point, it is with an outdoor access only, if it is cold or rainy, cover yourself and DO not got there in slippers! Staff is overall nice and smiling, especially our housekeeping lady, the lady upon check out and the bellman upon arrival. Rooms are large enough to be comfy and well equipped. Complementary still water and a small milk in the minibar (empty otherwise). Bathrooms with separate shower. All good. Breakfast ok, neither exceptional nor dissapointing. We did not have the time to try the A la carte part, pity. The diner was not as positive. The restaurant is not cosy and has a cold overall feeling, lacking of decor and finishing touches. Looking more like a cafeteria than a nice dining room (same place for Bkfst and pretty much same set up), despite some prices on the high end. I was advised wrongly re soft drinks at the beginning (re content size) and staff brought twice the same drink to me. They forgot my starter and brought the main directly. Some obvious miscommunication. We had a fish and a rib eye, both very nicely cooked but both with disappointing sides/sauce (too salty or too much vinegar in salad). It put us off ordering desserts. Overall a good address for a night before or after your plane.

Check in was easy, parking was not a problem. Food in restaurant was more finger food and more like what you’d get in a cinema. I was happy with it but hubby thought otherwise hahaha. We played pool at the lobby which had a pink table. Lots of fun before retiring for our super early flight. Room was ok for short stays. 7-10 mins walk to airport. On the whole was nice.

We stayed at the Riccarton Inn for three nights in July as we were attending a wedding at the nearby Free Company.  After originally booking a city centre hotel we decided to look at something a little closer and found The Riccarton which looked to be nearby, with nice rooms and at a good price. Before booking we contacted the venue via FaceBook to see if there were any room suggestions and we were told that rooms 1, 2 & 5 are double rooms but they suggested room 1 as the best pick out of the three if it was available…… it was, so we booked it. Getting to the venue was relatively easy, it was a 15 ish minute walk from Currie Hill train station although the majority was uphill so probably not the best route to take if you have reduced mobility.  There is a bus stop just over the road from the venue and if you catch the 44 from the city centre it drops you right there (the bus stop right outside the venue, i.e. on the same side of the road, takes you back into the centre on the 44 bus.  Buses are easy with TapTapCap so you can use your debit / credit card or device (always use the same card or device to make sure the cap applies).  A single journey is £1.80 and it caps at £4.40 for a full days travel.  We said that the next time we stay at the venue we’d definitely finish our journey on the bus instead of the train.  Oh, the venue is also on the N44 route which is the night bus service, ideal if you go out for a few drinks and it saves on taxis.  There are a few different local taxi services as well as Uber, the couple of times we used a taxi we did use Uber in the end as they were actually cheaper and we found them a little more reliable. Check in was really simple, we didn’t prepay but the cost of the room was charged to the card we booked with on the morning before we arrived.  All we needed to do was pop a signature onto the booking confirmation at the bar and we were handed our keys, one for the main door to the venue (it gets locked at midnight so you can let yourself in) and one to the room.  We didn’t pre-request breakfast but we decided to add it on for two of the mornings and paid for it at the bar…….. I would highly recommend the breakfast, at £8.95 per person it is most definitely worth it (more on that later). The room itself (room 1) was a decent size, it had a very comfortable bed, a built-in closet and plenty of drawer space.  The en-suite bathroom had a good size bath with over bath power shower, toilet and wash basin… again all spotlessly clean.  The towels were really fluffy and properly dried you instead of just moving the water around which is always a good plus.  At night the room did get a little warm but as long as you don’t mind your window open and you leave the bathroom door and window open you do cool down a little.  There are tea/coffee making facilities in the room and a hairdryer is also provided.  The WiFi code is provided on a welcome card which we found in one of the drawers in the desk. My partner and I arrived late after a flight to Edinburgh airport and were greeted by a very friendly member of staff in the nightshift. The whole hotel looked freshly decorated with new fixtures and fittings, all of which seemed of a very high quality. Our room (room 4) was wonderfully appointed, the bed was very comfortable and the shower was fantastic. Breakfast was freshly cooked and served very quickly. For what we paid this hotel is worth a 10/10 any day!!

Very good overall. Spa facilities mostly all available (no sauna). Room was spot on. Breakfast was disappointing. Cold plates is not a good start and having to wait for buffet service is not on either. Tea/coffee/milk brought to the table but you had to go look for sugar and so it goes on. Simple things in themselves but annoying when all you want to do is sit down and eat breakfast.

Loved our overnight stay, spacious room despite being made up with large king size bed and two single beds. Very clean. Lovely staff. Ate at Harry’s bistro within the hotel and food was piping hot and lovely. Great outdoor area at the back with seating and seats to the front too. Stunning view from room 205 with views of the bridges in the distance. A wee pal too with a seagull who liked to tap on the window.
