Located in the heart of the new downtown Detroit, The Atheneum is an excellent choice. It is close to Little Caesar's Arena, Co-America Park, the museum, and a host of other destinations. Inspired by Greek and Roman architecture, the hotel's interior boasts an unusual structure designed with the guest in mind. The Atheneum features an inviting, cathedral-like lobby, with a full bar (serves food, as well) and on the left, a long reception area on the opposite side. These flank the lounge with plenty of tables and places to for conversation. Unique, I think, to this engaging hotel is the circular motif to its landings at each level. A n elevator is behind you when you reach its central location. Press a button on the columnar structure at the center and one of five carriages will open for you. The exercise room is located on the second floor. Rooms are designer-spartan, with tasteful art and furnishings, comfortable beds and good linens. Glass block, allows light from the elevator rotunda into the suite and is repeated between bath and bedroom. The downside to the furnishing is the absence of a microwave; however, there is good coffee, and our room had a small refrigerator. In addition, the suite was spacious enough to be a studio apartment. What was wanting overall? Better lighting! If one prefers reading or working, rather than watching one of three ample flat screen TVs, best to bring a reading light or go down to the lobby. The staff are lovely. Personable and knowledge, they could not have been kinder or more professional. If a guest needs to be at an entertainment venue, it is arranged with grace and when your shuttle arrives, you are escorted to it will also bring you back to the hotel. And, finally. what a restaurant! See my separate review of the sublime Symposia.
