Really great stay! Kind of a traveler's hotel. Self-check-in/out is a little weird but went smoothly; there are usually a couple of staff folks at the kiosks to help. And, yes, the rooms are small, kind of Tokyo-esque, but very nice: comfy beds, great views (from the bed--we looked out over Roosevelt park to the east). The bathroom is small but remarkably not cramped. Fridge in the room, no microwave or coffee maker (but there's a great coffee spot a block west called Yours Truly--banging flat white).
But you aren't going to the city to stay in your room, right? Very convenient if you're arriving to JFK (took the airtrain to the J, get off at Bowery and you're across the street). Spring Street on the 6 is a very short walk if you're coming into Grand Central. Getting to Newark is more of a schlep.
Great neighborhood: food, bars, close to Chinatown/Little Italy, easy walk to the East Village, SoHo, alphabet city. And it's a part of town where people actually live, so there are great local spots (unlike, say, midtown)
Would absolutely stay here again.
