This is my third time staying at Mimpi Perhentian. It is sad to share that my experience this round is the worst as compared to the first two trips. There is no toiletries refill after the room was made up because the items are out of stock. I do understand that it closing season soon because of the monsoon. However, I did pay for the room at full price. Why do I have to be the collateral damage of the weather? The bed sheet and comforter have a smell which is caused by the sheet not drying properly. On my fourth day, the room was not made up when I returned to my room at noon. I called the front desk and told them to give me a new set of towels and omit the housekeeping. At around 4pm, the housekeeping staff knocked on my door and wanted to make up the room. Hence I am not sure if they have initially forgotten to make my room or if they only have one staff to do housekeeping. On top of that, I had a rude encounter with the restaurant manager. I went diving daily at 8am hence I have made a special request to pack my breakfast (which is included in the room package) and I will collect it at noon time. On the first day, the packed food portion was too little so I requested extra fruits on the second day with the restaurant manager in the morning. She said ok and when I collected my food at noon, it was not packed. Hence I asked the waitress on duty to pack it for me instead. On the third day, I saw the same restaurant manager again and I explained to her that she didn’t pack the extra fruits for me. She said I was not allowed to pack the food after I have eaten at the restaurant. I told her that I go diving at 8am, and I have never sat down to eat. She started to raise her voice and told me that I cannot pack the extra fruits because customers are only allowed to have one portion of fruits (which looks like a portion for a child). Which I find ridiculous because I get to dine an unlimited portion if I dine in. Furthermore, I did not request the packed food for fun. I will have digestive problems if I eat and dive. The restaurant manager was not only rude and inconsiderate, it is most disappointing that she judged me when all I did was take care of my health so that I can enjoy my dives and holiday.

When I arrived at Alunan, I was expecting the standard getaway, an escape from the city to refresh myself temporarily. But as soon as I arrived at the resort (via boat) I noticed something very special about this place. Beyond the breathtaking views and crystal clear skies and ocean, there was a lot of genuine care and connection from the resort team. The delightful guest service assistant, Sel, was waiting at the pontoon to greet new arrivals. She accompanied us to reception while showing us around the resort. After checking in, another guest service assistant, Teha, brought me to my stunning ocean-view room (floor-to-ceiling windows all around, a sizeable bathroom, and a rooftop deck) while explaining the unique character of this resort along the way. In order to preserve the island's ecosytem, no heavy machinery was used in the construction of the resort. There were no single-use plastics to be found, all body care items were natural and reef safe, and complementary jars of snacks were refillable. This has given the resort a very unique character: sturdy metal staircases and platforms connected various parts of the establishment, which rest at different altitudes on the landscape. There was even a tree growing out of the middle of the restaurant, protected by resort owners who seemed to have great respect for the island's primary forest and surrounding seas. Furthermore, the resort is passionate about the reef ecosystem surrounding Perhentian, and boasts a Coral Conservation initiative which allows guests to ”adopt” corals. With a small fee, one could learn about corals from resident marine biologists and place rescued corals in the coral nursery. Here, I met Aimi, who answered my questions about coral behaviour (I didn't know corals were animals rather than plants, or that they bred in rather strange ways). Upon adopting a coral, I got to jump into the ocean to snorkel around the coral nursery, which was teeming with fish species. It was surreal. There was also a dive centre, where another marine biologist, Naufal, assisted guests with necessary equipment to explore the seas. Lifejackets and snorkelling equipment were available to utilise at no cost, which led me to develop a daily swimming and snorkelling routine after settling in at the resort. Mind you, there's quite a fair bit to see in the ocean ecosystem in Perhentian. Batfish, wrasses, groupers, blue-lipped clams, corals and many other fishes can be found all around the island, clearly visible as the waters were clear like glass during my stay there. Those who can't swim could just visit the pontoon to look at the various colourful fishes of the Perhentian seas. There are no cars or roads, but one can hike or kayak their way around this stunning island. I went to Keranji beach via kayak and saw stunning, decades-old underwater coral from my kayak, and was often close to tears from the natural beauty of this island. If in the past my island holidays were notable for the hangovers

This was the holiday of a lifetime. A fantastic experience for all of us (2x 60+ somethings and 2x 20+ somethings). Carla and her entire team without exception were attentive, friendly, and each very interesting in their own individual way. From first impressions as we landed on the beach, through the welcome drink and Carla's very helpful introduction to island life, the food, and happy hour cocktails every day that you can set your watch by ready for the evenings activities along the beach (fire show, lots of excellent food, beach bars), will remain in our memories for a very long time - well at least until we return again!! The beach was a great blend of very clean, and lively enough to be interesting without overcrowding (the two weeks before Europe schools break for summer). So much to do too! We were here 8 nights and were busy right through, snorkelling with turtles, baby shaks (sic), little Nemo's and a whole host of other tropical fish. We were lucky enough to see, on two separate days, turtles come up the beach in front of the hotel to lay 100+ eggs (taken to a local sanctuary for hatching and release), and watch the mothers (Shirley Turts and Lily Shelby) make their way back to the water after dark. Amazing wildlife. A short day trip to Redang island was very worthwhile too - beautiful beaches. The boat boys (GreenBoys next to the hotel) were super helpful and friendly for all our excursions out to sea. We made a great number of ongoing social media friends on this trip. We used the spa on several occasions - June's massages were terrific after a long day in the sun and sea. Treks through the jungle to the ”windmills” (wind/solar generating station at a high point on the island - breathtaking views), and a short jungle walk across the island to other beaches were great too, but choose the time of day to do these activities carefully, and take water - it gets very hot in the sun!!

1. We had a great time on the boat, the snorkelling trip, and the view was amazing. We checked in on Thursday, and we felt like having the resort to our own. The resort became busier on Friday & Saturday. 2. Booking, checking in & out was quick and hassle-free. 3. The resort is near to the jetty; therefore, we did not have to walk very far. 4. The quality of the food was above average. Foods were cooked deliciously. The buffet choice was plenty, considering the COVID-19 pandemic. 5. The resort facilities, however, could use several improvements: 1. The room should be maintained regularly. The management cannot depend on complaints from the guests alone. Have a regular inspection and repair program. 2. Housekeeping is basic. Toiletries (shampoo) still contains Methylparaben. 3. The bathroom is huge, it should have a physical separation between the shower area 7 the toilet to avoid the bathroom floor from getting wet. 4. The hot water is only available during the day when solar power is abundant. 5. There were no TV channels. After some troubleshooting, we still got no TV, and we were advised to change our suite. At the new suite, we still got no TV. Then the staff at the Reception explained that the antenna was struck by lightning. The staff could have been truthful in the first place. 6. We noticed some rubbish was left at a spot without proper disposal. We also saw a giant lizard rummaging the trash. This poses a health & safety hazard. 6. Compliance to COVID-19 SOP: 1. No temperature screening equipment. 2. Staffs were not wearing face masks/face shields at any time we were there. 3. No movement control/physical distancing during the breakfast buffet. The staff must take proactive controls; they cannot depend on the guests because they were hungry. This resort is a best-seller, but please proceed with caution.
