(+) Very charming place (+) Kind host (+) Can play with a cat (+) Beautiful room. (-) Uncomfortable bedding texture. I understand that it saves costs, but it's a weird inconvenience. You can request an alternative (I haven't tried). (-) Cannot flush toilet paper. I understand why. I would stay again though :)

By far the best place to stay in Shanghai. The owner is super friendly and helpful, the room is spotless, and the location is perfect — close to everything you need. Definitely recommend staying here.

A little haven of peace in the heart of the biggest city.We wish we had spent more time there. We'll keep the address for later. The cats are very welcoming.

The 'housekeeper' waited patiently for our arrival as we had issue sorting out the hail-riding booking at the airport. She had forwarded pictures with directions so it made easy to walk from main road through the small lane to find. Being an old corner terrace, there's no lift. It's ok as the number of stairs up was not daunting. A little cramped in the room. Both of us are small-built and staying only for a night, it's ok too. Adequate power outlets though it would be perfect to have USB ports on the wall ;P Several eateries are available in the neighbourhood. However, most don't begin business even if it's 8+ in the morning. A short walk gets one to the metro station. If we had known earlier, we would have taken a ride to the accommodation from Xiaoshan train station. Nevertheless, we took a ride to the airport upon departure. (And it cost only 7 yuan per person!) Overall, we are satisfied with the stay.

We had a great stay at Zighouse. It's an old but charming building. There was a problem with our room but the owner eventually went above and beyond to sort it out. Would definitely recommend this place. The owner speaks great English so communication is easy. Also washing machine available. But no dryer. Location might seem a little scary at night because of small alleys but we never felt unsafe. Other then that very central location to explore the main sights of Shanghai by metro or even by foot.

It is a little hard to find but the owner sent detailed instructions on how to get to the house. There’s cats and a dog which are extremely well behaved and the room was great.

The location is extremely central, and the alleyway itself is very clean and tidy. It's very close to Huaihai Road and nearby Xintiandi, yet surprisingly quiet despite being in the heart of the city. I stayed on the 4th floor, the top floor, which was a separate room with a small balcony for some fresh air. Note that it's a large open-plan room with only a tatami mat next to the toilet. There's a wooden screen that can provide some privacy, but if you mind, be sure to check beforehand. This is a separate loft, with an outdoor terrace. The terrace is for drying clothes and has a small table. Relaxing on the rooftop in the morning is wonderful, with a panoramic view of Shanghai's alleyways. A very nice experience. Check-in was entirely self-service; there was no front desk, and communication was via WeChat. Overall, everyone seemed quite courteous. I went to bed early that night, as there were quite a few foreigners present.

I'm back in my beloved Shanghai again, choosing an old Western-style inn. Nestled in an old alleyway, it seamlessly blends the charm of old Shanghai with the everyday life of a local neighborhood. I love it... The cow cat mother and cubs are so affectionate and inviting to pet. They double as the inn's lobby manager and front desk staff, welcoming guests in the courtyard and letting them rub their backs and belly. Their sweet, coquettish meows are so sweet and warm, it feels like home...

I had to stay there in a hurry, and although the facilities were a bit old and had a bit of a smell, the location was close to Nanjing Road and they upgraded my room for free, so I had a good stay.

The owner proactively upgraded my room for three consecutive days. The cats in the courtyard were very friendly, and they even came to see me off when I left.

The cats on duty were quite cute, the guesthouse had a great location, and the old-style houses and alleyways had a charming atmosphere.
