From the exterior, this is more akin to a Spanish Parador than the often industrial units commonly used to house Premier Inns. That's not surprising, once staff tell you that it's a grade 2 listed building that once housed the County Records Office. Having been up since 3am, in need of a sit down and the loo, I reported an hour early for check-in. Unlike my previous Premier Inn experience, I was shown to a comfy seat, pointed in the direction of the Gents, and offered a complimentary cup of tea. Now THAT'S hospitality from an experienced pro. Thanks, Emily. The room was fine, with the exception of the water, which, despite warnings of the hot temperature, only ever became lukewarm, including the shower in the morning. As in previous PI visits, I struggled with the room temperature control. Having set it to 22C before bedtime, it had mysteriously switched off during the night, rendering it pretty chilly at 4am. I had taken advantage of the meal deal, which, at £26.99, buys a two-course dinner with a drink, plus breakfast. I reckon I saved £20 on menu prices by doing that. I had my first prawn cocktail in about half a century, beautifully prepared by Aga, the Polish chef, who also put together an excellent mixed grill. The pre-packed butter portion was rock hard, so I used my patented solution, once demonstrated amid much hilarity to my mother on a KLM business-class flight from Amsterdam to New York. The trick: pop it under your armpit for a few seconds! I never fails! The young Filpino server was attentive, helpful, and a perfect example of how someone in the hospitality industry should be. Unlike the two women staff at breakfast the following morning. Having gone in at the start of service, all they did was stand at the bar yacking, leaving the few early morning guests to fend for themselves. No guidance as to what was where, no offer of tea or coffee, and no clearing of plates as the meal progressed. By 8am, now stationed at the entrance, they did say 'thank you' as I left. Glenn, the breakfast chef, told me he'd been in at 0530 to prepare. I think he'd cooked everything by 0600. I don't expect, right at the start of service, scrambled eggs to be dried out. Even worse, every single thing on the buffet was, at best, tepid. Food Standards would have had a field day. So, a mixed bag all in all, but the best broadband I've ever had in a Premier Inn - the chargeable ultimate Wi-Fi, rather than the free version, coming in at 8mpbs. Criticism apart, I wanted to book again for a theatre visit in May, as the dreaded rail replacement bus is operating due to bridge-bulding at Stowmarket Station, meaning I can't bring my bike. Dynamic pricing being what it is, my £63 room will be £100 more! It's always best to travel off-peak.
