The hotel is in a good location right on the harbour with great views and just yards from bars and restaurants. It is an attractive building externally with a pleasant garden and pool area. The main part of the building, a former villa, is smart and impressive. However the majority of the bedrooms are located in an extension and the corridors here have no natural light and are grey and oppressive. The bedrooms are rather small with rather austere grey decor and no art work. A bit like a prison cell. The rooms and bathroom are clean and well serviced. The beds are decidedly uncomfortable, small and hard; don’t expect a good night’s sleep. The only bedding provided is a sheet and a very flat pillow. Breakfast are reasonably good with a good variety of fresh continental fare plus bacon and eggs and these can be eaten outside in front of the hotel which is pleasant. The evening meals are a disappointment. The menu is limited, repetitive and uninspiring. Guests have to eat in a starkly-lit dining room that has no character. Guests were expressly forbidden to take their food outside as one could at breakfast. There is one choice only for vegetarians. The main courses are kept in heated trays and the food is dry and lukewarm. Although half-board we cut our losses and ate in one of the many al fresco restaurants nearby which were very good value for money.. The pool area is attractive and of a good size. Perhaps a little more supervision would have been helpful to discourage children from yelling and screaming and large family groups hogging the whole pool with their games. The full extent of the garden is not utilised and there was always a lack of loungers made worse by a number of selfish guests who reserved, but did not use the beds for much of the day. We observed one family of four requisition four beds before breakfast and then go out for day to return at 4 o’clock Only thirty loungers for 90 guests. The hotel is on a busy road. The bedrooms are double-glazed but there is significant and almost constant noise from the ubiquitous Italian motor scooter which make ten times the noise of a bus carrying fifty passenger. Be warned also that the roads outside the hotel are swept at 6 in the morning by very noisy vehicles. Many guests had faulty air conditioning, bad news when the temperature was 36C. We had it on good authority that the management were reluctant to get it repaired because of the cost. The hotel owners are rather supercilious and unfriendly and regularly laughed when one voiced a concern. We wouldn’t recommend Hotel Milan and advise others to look elsewhere. Air conditioning that works, pleasant comfortable rooms, better food and less arrogant owners and the hotel would be just perfect.
