Hotel J, Unawatuna

The room is nice, the manager and people work there are very kind, there is a good location from the beach and the mattress is nice. I really recommend it. The pool is nice, they have a good breakfast. I went during low season. It was very quiet that was nice because was my last destination in Sri Lanka

Basic budget hotel with a great pool and lovely staff! Rooms were spacious and clean with a balcony, desk & chair, TV with local channels, air con and a ceiling fan. Although housekeeping is available, and I believe there is supposed to be a card to put on the door, we never had one and despite mentioning this on several occasions we were never given one and had to constantly ask for housekeeping, fresh towels etc when needed. The pool is fantastic, I was in this every day of our stay and towels for the pool are available and although there is a space for them they're rarely at the side of the pool, so you need to go ask for them too! There is a toilet at the side of the pool and a shower to rinse off before/after a swim. Breakfast if not included, was available until 11:00 am (if I remember correctly) and was ~1,500 LKR. Service can be a little slow, one morning I waited 40 minutes and no-one took my breakfast order, they'd just walk past me, so I ended up going into the reception and asking for that too, service is a hit and a miss, sometimes people are buzzing round you and other times they don't come near! My husband became unwell during our stay and the staff couldn't have been more helpful, absolutely commend them for that - thank you so much. There is a supermarket across the road, restaurants etc are ~1.5km away, tuk tuks are always outside, don't let them overcharge you - haggle!!! ~500-600 to Ceylon Spa and ~800 if you're going further down to the bigger hotels/restaurants. We stayed here for 8 nights as a stop gap due to a change in our plans, and we enjoyed our stay.

Myself & my boyfriend stayed here the start of this week. The hotel has a restaurant downstairs where we ate at one night & the food was delicious! The staff are very friendly & super helpful. Our room was a decent size. The only downside to this hotel was that there were quite a lot of ants in our room. I know that bugs in hot countries are a given but there was lots.

My friends and I spent a day at Hotel J and enjoyed our stay. The Good: The rooms were clean, the pool was well maintained, and the food we ordered was good. The staff was friendly and helpful; doing their best whenever we had a request. The ACs in the rooms were powerful and we were comfortable in the humidity of Sri Lanka. The Bad: There are few things such as wires sticking out of the AC, stains in the bathrooms etc that would be great, if handled. The Unique: As far as a great budget destination, Hotel J ticks all the boxes. It's easy to find, it's comfortable to stay in, it's right opposite a supermarket and it's a 5 minute drive from Galle Fort. The style of the hotel is of an old Sri Lankan bungalow and it's lovely.
