Ulasan U Street Hostel

The hostel itself was good. The check-in process with the Goki app worked smoothly. My travel companion and I stayed in a twin room with bunk beds. Mattress and pillow were both thick and soft. Towels, soap, and toothbrush were provided. The bathroom was fine, but the door wouldn't close all the way shut, leaving a gap of about an inch. We usually just used the bathroom in the hall instead. A fridge and microwave are available in the common area on the floor. I thought I had chosen a hostel in a good location, so close the U Street metro station, and in a neighbourhood with so many restaurants and also grocery stores nearby, and yes, all of these were convenient. Unfortunately, on a Friday night, this neighbourhood is very loud, with loud music being blasted from cars parked outside late into the night. The windows aren't very sound proof, so we could hear everything clearly. When shots were fired at 5:00 in the morning, we heard those loud and clear too, soon followed by the sirens of at least 20 emergency vehicles that remained parked on the street outside our window for several hours. There had been a homicide at the bus stop in front of U Street station. The victim was 19-year-old Andre Baker. When I read news reports later, I learned that there had been another homicide the previous night on 13th St between U Street and T Street, the block the hostel is on. The victim was 33-year-old Denzel Greenwood. I recognize that what happens on the street outside the hostel is beyond the control of the hostel management. I would recommend the hostel itself, but travellers should be aware of the safety risks in the surrounding area.
