| Oroqen (976). The Oroqen is a tribe of the Oroqen people, located on the banks of the Oroqen River in the northernmost part of Genhe City, Hulunbuir, and in the western suburbs of Genhe City. It is the farthest and most mysterious branch of the Oroqen people. The Oroqen, also known as the Reindeer Evenki, means a place where poplar forests thrive. In the mid-17th century, the Reindeer Evenki migrated from the Lake Baikal region to the dense forests of the Greater Khingan Range, living off hunting and raising reindeer. They are known as the 'Reindeer Tribe' and 'China's Last Hunting Tribe', and are one of the ethnic groups in China that preserve the 'reindeer culture'. The last generation of pure-blooded Reindeer Evenki numbers only about 30 people, and the reindeer they have relied on for generations have dwindled to just over 600. A very small portion of the Reindeer Evenki still retain a more primitive and natural way of production and life.
