Ataka-no-Seki Barrier

#japantrip You'd have to be a pretty serious fan of Japanese legendary history to find this monument worth a look, but the statues are impressive enough. This site is reputed to be the location of a border/tax gate set up to control the flow of people going north, and is the legendary setting for an episode in 1187 that's been immortalized in kabuki plays and Akira Kurosawa movies. This is the site of the Ataka Sekisho, which was the setting for the Kabuki play Kanjincho. There are well-maintained restrooms in the area, making it suitable for walking.
