Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden

#sydneytrip This urban secret garden is quite a lush and cool place to wander on a hot day, with plentiful greenery and tantalising views of the city. When you climb out you will find the former home of Wendy and the late Brett Whiteley and see why, after his death in 1992, she opted to clean up this piece of unused railway land neglected by Transport NSW. What I liked about it was it felt organic and less planned and intentional than other gardens. It has an eccentric series of interwoven paths running through it which defies you seeing all of it in an orderly fashion, instead inviting you to partake of it organically. It’s also littered with nooks and resting spots. The screams of children on Luna Park Sydney’s neighbouring Big Dipper added a strange, otherworldly eeriness to the experience.
