Philadelphia Philadelphia, officially known as 'Philadelphia', is a major industrial and commercial city in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania, USA. It is situated along the Delaware River, facing Camden, New Jersey, across the river, approximately 140 kilometers from the river's mouth. The city boasts large-scale port facilities along the Delaware River, allowing large ocean-going vessels to reach the port area directly, making it an important port in the United States. Philadelphia is the country's former capital and its fourth-largest metropolis. Over time and with industrial development, Philadelphia's significance has faded somewhat, but in the mid-18th century, it was the site where the Declaration of Independence was drafted and signed. Both the First and Second Continental Congresses were convened here. The draft of the United States Constitution was also crafted and signed in Philadelphia. Betsy Ross designed and raised the first American flag here; and the nation's founding father, George Washington, also left his mark on the city. This place is the birthplace of America and American democracy. The name 'Philadelphia' comes from Greek, meaning 'brotherly love', and this city, with a population of 1.6 million, still maintains the feel of a friendly small town. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is much more imposing than the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in appearance, with a beautiful facade facing directly towards the Philadelphia City Hall.
