Exploring the World of Yokai in Sakaiminato: Stepping into Shigeru Mizuki's Realm

In Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, Japan, the charm of yokai seems to be everywhere. As I set foot on this land, the first thing that caught my eye was Sakaiminato Station, a place full of whimsy and fantasy. As the terminal station of the JR Sakai Line, Sakaiminato Station is not only the gateway to the world of yokai but also the birthplace of Shigeru Mizuki's fantastical stories. Riding the adorable Kitaro Train, my heart was filled with anticipation. These trains are not only decorated with illustrations of manga characters on the outside, but the interiors are also filled with cute images of the Kitaro family, bringing immense joy to both children and adults. As the train traveled through beautiful scenery, I thought, this is not just a journey, but an adventure with yokai. On the train, I heard the announcement for 'Nezumi Otoko Station,' and at that moment, it felt like I had truly stepped into the world of manga. Every time I stepped out of the station, I could see chibi statues of Shigeru Mizuki, alongside Kitaro, Nezumi Otoko, and Medama Oyaji, as if they were quietly guarding this land. Sakaiminato, the hometown of this manga artist, made me feel a strong cultural atmosphere. Everything here tells the story of Shigeru Mizuki, and as a witness to these stories, I couldn't help but feel a surge of emotion. In Sakaiminato City, besides riding the yokai train, there are various interesting activities waiting for me. Starting from the station, I took a bus that circled Sakaiminato, visiting major tourist attractions, making me feel like I was in a yokai amusement park. Especially 'Shigeru Mizuki Road,' a street full of Showa-era retro vibes, with 177 bronze statues, each one making me stop and admire. At night, the yokai silhouette projections on Shigeru Mizuki Road gave me a sense of mysterious charm different from the daytime. This atmosphere reminded me of childhood stories, as if the yokai were quietly moving in the night, sharing their secrets with me. Even though I never experienced the peak of Kitaro, coming here, taking photos, and feeling the presence of yokai made me incredibly happy. In Sakaiminato, yokai are no longer synonymous with fear but are adorable characters from childhood memories. This yokai journey is not just a trip but a sweet memory, making me deeply attached to this land.
