Glancing at the Granaries

As you wander around Floriana and Valletta you may stumble across some open, stone paved areas covered in circular stone slabs. They may seem quite strange and you may wonder what they are; well these are in fact granaries. The stone slabs you can see are actually the tops or lids . The granaries pictured are actually right at the end of the aptly named Grain Street, just outside the old main entrance to Fort Saint Elmo. The granaries were built in the 17th and 18th centuries to be able to provide storage within the fortifications in case of a siege. #celebrateit #mediterranean #valletta
