The Spring Hill, made of Taihu stones, features the twelve zodiac animals (in shape). Bamboo is planted among the stones, and stone shoots are also piled up, symbolizing the rapid growth of bamboo shoots after rain. The Spring Hill faces the Yiyu Pavilion, a place for banquets, creating a delightful spring scene. 🪷 Summer: The Summer Hill, located to the left rear of Yiyu Pavilion, is a sight to behold. It is also made of Taihu stones and features a lotus pond at the foot of the hill and a crane pavilion on top. Taihu stones are known for being "thin, wrinkled, leaky, and transparent." The fishbone stone in the pond, a treasure of the garden, resembles the character "moon" (月) standing in the pond. Stones resembling frogs are placed by the pond, creating a scene of moonlight over a lotus pond with the sound of frogs croaking. The plaque of the Crane Pavilion on the hilltop is read from left to right to incorporate the pine and cypress trees to the left of the pavilion, forming "Pine Crane Pavilion." 🍁 Autumn: The Autumn Hill, the largest of the four seasonal hills, is connected to the Summer Hill on the left by the Baoshan Building. It is ideal for climbing and is made of Huangshan rockery, rugged and meandering. The hill features stone windows, stone benches, stone tables, skylights, stone steps, and stone bridges. The Zhuqiu Pavilion at the summit is the highest point in the garden. ❄ Winter: The Winter Hill, located on the east side of the garden, between the Autumn Hill and the Spring Hill, is closer to the Spring Hill. From the latticed windows of the Winter Hill, one can see the Spring Hill, implying that spring is not far behind even in winter. The Winter Hill is built with Xuan stone, which is crystal white and radiantly round. Winter plum, Nandina domestica, and elm trees are planted on the hill, adding a touch of color to the winter landscape. The south wall of the Winter Hill also features a "wind sound hole," which produces the sound of a howling north wind when the wind blows, creating a chilly atmosphere.
