Beijing With Kids: Pop Land, Pandas and Theme Parks for Malaysian Families

Beijing looks intimidating on paper. It is huge, and English is rare on menus. With a child in tow, though, it turns out to be one of Asia's easier big cities to enjoy on a budget.

This guide covers what Malaysian parents ask about most: Pop Land, Beijing Zoo and the theme parks, plus flights, strollers, hotels and homestays. Prices are in yuan, and 1 CNY is about RM0.60.

Why Beijing is easier with kids than you expect

Beijing runs on UTC+8, the same as Kuala Lumpur, so nobody lands with a jet-lagged toddler at 3am.

The metro is the quiet hero of a family trip here. Fares run ¥3 to ¥6, signs are in English, and since September 2024 you can tap a foreign Visa or Mastercard straight at the gate, with JCB and American Express added in June 2025. No ticket machine. No queue. No child on your hip while you hunt for coins.

Pop Land: Labubu, Molly and a castle inside Chaoyang Park

Pop Land is why many Malaysian families have added Beijing to the list. Pop Mart built it, it opened on 26 September 2023, and it fills about 40,000 square metres inside Chaoyang Park.

Picture your blind-box shelf at park size, with Labubu, Molly and the Monsters as characters.

Four zones split the park. Pop Street holds the shops, snack bars and photo stops, Labubu Adventure Forest is the treehouse section, Molly's Castle has a free walk-through attraction in the basement, and Dimoo's Lake has the waterside restaurant.

Tickets changed on 30 April 2026, when the first renovated half reopened. A standard ticket now runs ¥148 on a weekday and ¥178 at peak, while an entry-only sightseeing ticket costs ¥88 and ¥118. The big rides charge ¥30 to ¥45 extra.

Timing matters here. Character greetings have capacity limits and the queue shuts before each session, so line up twenty minutes early. Allow three to five hours. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are calmest; 2pm to 5pm is always busy.

Take Metro Line 14 to Zaoying station and leave by Exit D, a 200 metre walk. One thing to know before you plan: Beijing has no Disney park at all.

Beijing Zoo and the pandas

Beijing Zoo opened in 1906, the oldest public zoo in China, and it holds more than 5,000 animals across roughly 400 species.

A new giant panda house opened on 16 July 2026, with 13,000 square metres of climbing frames, play pools and misting systems for hot days. Ten pandas moved in, including Meng Lan, the one with the internet fan club. Arrive between 8.30am and 10.30am to see them awake, because by early afternoon they are flat out.

Peak season runs 1 April to 31 October, when an adult pays ¥15, or ¥19 for the combo that adds the panda house. Off-peak, those fall to ¥10 and ¥14. Children under 1.2 metres enter free and students pay half, and the zoo's WeChat account sells tickets a day ahead. Carry the passport you booked with, because the gate scans it.

The zoo opens at 7.30am daily and closes at 6pm in peak season. Allow four hours for the loop, and expect a long walk between the pandas and the giraffes.

Theme parks: Happy Valley or Universal Studios Beijing

Happy Valley is the local favourite. The OCT Group opened it in July 2006, and at 560,000 square metres it ranks among the biggest parks in northern China, with seven zones running from Fjord Forest to Atlantis.

The rides are serious. Extreme Coaster launches at about 100km/h and needs a minimum height of 1.4 metres. Families with younger children should head for Dessert Kingdom, which holds the carousel, a family coaster, a 4D cinema and the Fantasy Aquarium.

Expect around ¥300 for an adult day ticket, about ¥195 for children, and night tickets from ¥149. Metro Line 7 to Happy Valley Scenic Area station and Exit B leaves you a five-minute walk from the gate.

Universal Studios Beijing is bigger and glossier, with dynamic tickets from ¥418 to ¥748. Children under three are free, and ages three to eleven pay roughly three-quarters of the adult rate. Pricing follows age rather than height, which catches out first-time visitors.

Ride Metro Line 1 or Line 7 to Universal Resort station, then walk to the fifteenth carriage, which stops nearest Exit B. No halal-certified kitchens operate inside, but CityWalk has Donglaishun for halal hotpot.

More attractions that win with kids

The Beijing Aquarium sits a short walk from the zoo's north side and pairs well with a panda morning. The Beijing Planetarium stands 400 metres south of the zoo gate, and the Natural History Museum, 600 metres southwest, is the dinosaur stop.

Beijing Wildlife Park is the drive-through safari option out in Daxing, where animals come to the bus window.

Then there is the Great Wall. Mutianyu is the family-friendly section, less steep than Badaling and far quieter. The cable car lifts you to the ridge, and a 1,580 metre toboggan slide brings you down, the part your children will remember.

Flights from Malaysia with children

Non-stop Kuala Lumpur services land at two airports. Malaysia Airlines MH318 and AirAsia X D7 342 both use Daxing (PKX), while Air China flies to Capital (PEK).

Fares respond to timing more than airline. A recent AirAsia X low was RM522 one way, and September is the cheapest month at about RM576. Wednesday is the cheapest day to fly and Saturday the worst, so book around 40 days ahead.

Baggage is where families save or lose money. Malaysia Airlines allows 7kg of cabin baggage and 32kg checked, while AirAsia X charges less for a 32kg bag added during booking than at the airport.

Flying with an infant? Request a bassinet position when you book, because airlines carry only a few per flight.

Getting around and where to stay

The metro works well with a buggy on newer lines. Do not plan to drive, because Malaysian licences and International Driving Permits are not valid in mainland China, where visitors cannot self-drive anyway. Use DiDi, which takes foreign cards.

Beijing lists 10,589 hotels, so location is the real decision. Book within a five-minute walk of a metro station on Line 1, Line 7 or Line 14 and you can reach the parks, the zoo and Pop Land without a taxi. The homestay side is appealing. Courtyard guesthouses, called siheyuan, cluster in Dongcheng around Shichahai and Nanluoguxiang, and sleeping around a central courtyard is memorable for children.

Book that type carefully. Hotels in China must hold a licence to register foreign guests, and small guesthouses often cannot process a foreign passport. Ask before you pay.

Food, crowds and what to pack

Northern Chinese food is saltier than what Malaysian children are used to, so ask for less salt. Beijing duck, dumplings, noodles and jianbing are the safe wins, and Niujie street covers halal, though its mosque is closed for renovation until 2027.

April to May and September to October are the comfortable windows, and Malaysian school holidays in 2026 fall on 21 to 29 March, 23 May to 7 June, 29 August to 6 September, and 5 to 31 December.

Avoid Chinese New Year week and the 1 to 7 October golden week, when crowds peak and hotel rates jump. December is cold rather than busy, with days averaging 3.7°C and nights near -5°C, so pack thermals, gloves and a hat for each child.

Malaysians need no visa for China. The agreement gives 30 days per entry and 90 days within any 180-day window, and it runs until July 2030. Fill the free China Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours of arrival.
