Cambodia Tax Refund Guide: How to Claim VAT Refund for Tourists

Gambar Profil Penulis

If you're planning a shopping trip to Cambodia, here’s something I wish I had known earlier — you can actually get a tax refund on your purchases in Cambodia! 🛍️💸

I recently returned from an amazing trip to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (yes, the temples were breathtaking 😍), and along the way, I did a lot of shopping — silk scarves, silver jewelry, handmade souvenirs, even a few luxury items. What surprised me most? I got part of the tax I paid refunded at the airport before flying home. 🙌

It’s one of those travel hacks that many tourists don’t know about — but it can save you a good chunk of money, especially if you’re spending on gifts or fashion. And yes, the process is actually pretty simple.

🎯 Whether you’re heading to Angkor Wat or exploring the buzzing night markets in Phnom Penh, don’t miss out on this easy way to save!

In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Cambodia’s VAT refund for tourists — who qualifies, how much you can claim, and the exact steps I followed to get my refund smoothly at the airport. Ready to shop smarter and get your money back? Let’s go! 🧳🧾

🧐 What is a Tax Refund in Cambodia?

According to Cambodia’s General Department of Taxation, tourists who shop in Cambodia pay a 10% VAT (Value Added Tax) on goods.

As a non-Cambodian tourist, you’re eligible to reclaim some of this tax when you shop at authorized retailers and claim it at the airport before flying out. It’s like cashback on your shopping spree!

💰 How Much is VAT in Cambodia?

VAT in Cambodia is 10%, which is significant enough that it’s worth applying for a refund, especially on larger purchases.

🔙 How Much Can I Get Back?

You can typically get back up to 8.5% of the purchase value after processing fees. I spent about RM2,000 on local silk products and jewelry — and received a refund of nearly RM160. 🥳

♥️One of the biggest challenges when traveling abroad is how to stay connected in Cambodia? Don’t worry—you can opt for an Cambodia eSIM! It’s affordable and incredibly convenient!

High-end, elegant, and classy, as expected from a well-funded brand. Although the rooms aren't huge, they have a distinctive style. Downstairs, you'll find an entertainment complex and an inner-city duty-free shop. The Mekong River and the Royal Palace are right outside the door. What a perfect spot to get rich!

Undoubtedly a perfect score! 💯 This is a fantastic hotel with impeccable service, an excellent location, and absolutely stunning architecture. I believe the hotel was built upon an existing old structure, and the style is simply breathtaking. Especially at night 🌃, it has a super cool vibe – my photos honestly don't do it justice. The front desk staff were incredibly polite and had everything perfectly arranged. When I arrived in the middle of the night and saw two other groups checking in, I knew I had made the right hotel choice. The hotel is situated near the Royal Palace and close to the National Museum, placing it right in the heart of the main tourist area. Most attractions are within walking distance, making it the perfect choice for travelers. I *must* mention the breakfast here; it's incredibly high quality, almost perfect. They truly understand guest needs and provide a high standard of options. A simple example is the yogurt: they don't offer generic supermarket products but instead provide homemade, unsweetened yogurt. To cater to different tastes, you have choices like plain, with passion fruit, or with diced mango. They emphasize fresh, high-quality ingredients, a comfortable and beautiful dining environment, a rich selection of low-sugar options, mild flavors, and attentive service. You definitely need to try it. Special thanks to the front desk and the restaurant. Because we had to catch a very early flight, they specially prepared convenient packed meals for us upon request, which we picked up at the front desk at 5:30 AM. That was fantastic! This is the best hotel choice in Phnom Penh.

Every time I visit Phnom Penh, I stay at this hotel. The breakfast is fresh and plentiful. The pool and gym are clean. The hotel staff are enthusiastic, and the parking security guards are amiable. The foot massage parlor on the first floor of the hotel is also really nice! Plus, there are so many mango trees in the garden outside. It's also very close to the Royal Palace, less than 200 units away.

This hotel is pretty good, and it seems like a lot of Chinese travelers stay here. The front desk staff are also nice and some even speak a bit of Chinese, so check-in and check-out were smooth. Just a heads up, remember to prepare a $100 cash deposit. Also, a quick reminder: even if you don't eat durian, don't bring it into the room, as it can leave a lingering smell. Overall, the room is good and quite spacious. I'd definitely go back.

The location is lovely and as you arrive there’s a real wow feeling.  The service is excellent and the whole team are delightful. The pool was beautiful and the gardens were really lovely.  It was really quiet when we were there so the restaurant was often empty besides us which  felt a bit strange. The food was fine but could have been hotter, it felt that presentation took priority over heat. The prices in the restaurant seemed quite high. I love the idea that this place is eco friendly however if guests are expected to top up water bottles the water stations should be clean and inviting. The gym was a bit scruffy and not inviting but then I wasn’t there for that!  The place is relatively new however there were definite signs of the rooms being tired  but I think if cleaned more would make the place look spectacular - which I guess is the desired effect. Eg. Our courtyard was very scruffy and not welcoming. The TV wasn’t working and the windows in the apartment desperately needed cleaning.  Some little touches and attention to detail would bring this back to the 5* glory that it should be.  Overall we enjoyed our stay and hope that the management team take my comments on board because I think it could be fabulous.

The room was amazing, clean and big. The reception staff was brilliant. How ever we ran into a problem with one member of staff who was rude ( gave us dirty looks ) after we complained about our food order been wrong. We sent the same meal back 5 times after it was wrong. This was not a language barrier either because we translated it for said person. We told the manager who never got back to us. Other than that problem, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend.

Very good room, clean and got nice amenities. There is a rooftop smoking area on the 7th Floor that is 24/7, if you want easy access then be sure to ask to stay on the 7th floor. There's free lemon water downstairs in the lobby. Breakfast is quite decent, they make you a few different noodles as well as your standard breakfast buffet. There is a deposit of $100 USD required and they prefer cash as paying with card can take 1-30 days to return the money. There is some temporary parking out front so getting transport is quite easy, as well as getting food delivered. This place isn't marked on Grab so you'll need to be quite precise with the location for delivery, as well as providing a picture of outside of the hotel for your Grab delivery address. The room itself has automatic curtains, multi-styled plugs for international travelers, good lighting so you can sleep with the right amount of lights on if you want to. Hotel staff is confirmed to be 24/7 at reception, they'll always be someone there and they speak quite good English. Around the corner is a small local convenience store for buying extra water or local cigarettes. Down the road a bit is a 24/7 ABA Bank ATM that withdraws only in USD in amounts of 100USD bills so getting deposit for this place isn't that hard. However because the ATM does only 100USD bills, breaking this note at local shops is quite difficult.

I had a wonderful experience at Luxcity Hotel. From the moment I arrived, the staff were welcoming, professional, and very attentive. The check-in process was smooth and fast, which made a great first impression. The room was very big and spacious, much larger than I expected. It was beautifully designed, modern, and extremely comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean, from the bathroom to the bedding. The bed was soft and cozy, ensuring a very good night’s sleep. I also appreciated the quiet atmosphere, which made the stay even more relaxing. One of the highlights of my stay was that the hotel allowed a late check-out at 1:00 PM, which was very convenient for my schedule. The staff handled my request kindly and professionally, showing excellent customer service. The facilities were also impressive, including the rooftop pool and dining area. Overall, Luxcity Hotel offers great comfort, cleanliness, and outstanding service. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Phnom Penh, and I will definitely stay here again!

Favourite Hotel Ever!! As usual, it never disappoints. Truly remarkable that this is my 4th visit and I still get the same exceptional service and staff remember me. It is nice that they treat returning visitors as VIPs and are willing to factor this in when considering certain concessions. I had accidentally spilled my chocolate frappe on the sheets. The hotel charge me for the replacement cost (which was totally fair) and discounted the cost since I am their “loyal customer). I’m not saying they should always do this but it certainly impressed me that they considered all my visits and friends I’d encouraged to stay over. Besides this though they are still usually reasonable with such things. Per usual, there is everything around to make your stay completely seamless from shops to pharmacies to restaurants, etc. The room service is 24 hours and excellent. Quality produce and delivery. Staff, especially check in are very kind and helpful. I was really impressed by the check-in guy as I land early hours of the morning and he was very efficient. Plus, they had switched on the AC and the room was very comfortable after the long journey. Having written many reviews for this hotel, there is not much more I can say as they continue to improve and maintain very high standards. My only complaints are that the pool closes far too early at 8pm. I hope the hotel could consider extending the time. Secondly, the 4th four does not have a designated smoking section so it can become quite thick with the smoke smell. They might consider arranging ashtrays at more places than just the lift. A UM Undoubtedly, my hotel of choice whenever I’m in PP. Thank you to everyone for your kindness and making my stay, once again, truly wonderful! 🌹🌹

This is a great hotel. There is limited car parking, but it did not seem to be a problem. The staff were good. I had an issue with a water leak in the room. On this trip I upgraded to one of their apartments and that made my week even more comfortable.. Very spacious, bath, 2 showers 2 toilets, 2 good aircon units and a small balcony overlooking Wat Botum pagoda. A good family sized fridge freezer meant my drinks, milk meats and cheeses were cold. Basic utensils but top tip, bring a normal cutlery knife. Located on 4th floor, I woas treated to a spooky but spectacular lightning show without the rumble of thunder. Stood on balcony and had a fantastic view. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Breakfasts still very good, simple but plenty. However going 'self-catering' allowed me to get my cornflakes and ice cold milk in the morning. Cannot beat that! Next visit will see me booking an apartment only. So so convenient. Again, Le Botum was a superb location for me. Go to street 172. Plenty of expats....some characters too...and a 24hr supermarket called 'Smile' and you will. So much British stuff, it could have been anywhere in the UK. Book Le Botum. You won't be disappointed.

The hotel is located very close to the Royal Palace and National Museum, both within a 10 minute walk, as well as convenient to a number of restaurants. Staff were very caring and when I had a medical issue, they were able to check in on me as I was travelling alone. The breakfast buffet was wonderful, with a rotating selection of treats each day along with an egg station. I ate at the Pergola restaurant one evening, which is pricey by local standards, but was delicious and fresh. The poolside restaurant, where breakfast is served, is very realxing. Overall, I would not hesitate to stay here again.

I arrived at this hotel around 12 noon. The reception staff welcomed me kindly. There were a few other people waiting in the lobby at the same time. They told us that the rooms were not ready yet and that check-in time was at 2 PM. I said okay and started waiting, but since I thought it might take a while, I decided to go for a walk. I explored the nearby streets, went into a market, did some shopping, and spent some time outside. When I returned to the hotel around a little after 1 PM, I noticed that the people who had been waiting earlier were gone—so I assume their rooms had been given. The receptionist told me that my room was also ready. Then a staff member accompanied me to my room, which was on the 5th floor. The elevator in this hotel only goes up to the 4th floor, so you have to take the stairs up one more level to reach the 5th floor. The room itself was quite spacious. The Wi-Fi worked well without any issues. However, the TV did not seem to have smart features—there was no internet connection or anything like that. It was supposed to show regular channels, but due to poor antenna reception, it barely showed anything. The channels were full of static and not watchable, so the TV was essentially unusable. The air conditioner was working, but I think the gas might have been low, because the cooling was quite weak. Still, it was enough for me. There is a safe box in the room, but it seemed to have been locked previously and could only be used with a key. I couldn’t use it with a digital code. There is also a minibar with various drinks, but I didn’t use it. I only used the fridge to store items I bought myself. I think having a fridge is quite important in hot countries like this—it’s definitely useful. Hot water was available without any problems. One of the best things about this hotel is its location—it’s within walking distance to tourist areas and central entertainment spots. Other than that, I didn’t notice any particularly special features. The building itself is quite old, and I could see that it’s somewhat worn out. Still, it’s fine for a few days’ stay. But if you are expecting something luxurious, you should probably look for another hotel. For breakfast, there is a set menu. During my three-day stay, I had the same set menu every day. It was pretty standard, nothing special. There is also a restaurant at the entrance where you can order meals, but I didn’t try it—I only had breakfast there. That’s pretty much my experience. If you ask whether I would stay here again, I’d say it’s not bad, but you might be able to find a better place for the same price if you look around. The price was around the market average—not too expensive, not cheap either. Maybe you can find something better for the same price, but I’m not sure. These are my thoughts about the hotel. Have a great holiday everyone!

The hotel is quite far from the city's main airport (about an hour's drive, which is lengthy) and is also a bit distant from the main street and the flower market. Otherwise, it's a very pleasant resort. I enjoyed the spacious room and the lush greenery surrounding it. The breakfasts were fairly good, though they could use a little improvement. All in all, a decent place.
