Singapore Tax Refund Guide – Claim GST Back as a Tourist

Gambar Profil Penulis

If you're planning a trip to Singapore and love shopping as much as I do, then listen up — because this travel tip will seriously help you stretch your Ringgit! 💸 As a Malaysian traveler, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Singapore offers tax refunds (GST refunds) for tourists on a wide range of purchases.

From Orchard Road’s fashion boutiques to skincare at Changi Airport, you can claim back part of the 9% GST (Goods and Services Tax) on your spending — and yes, it’s easier than you might think! 😍🛍️

Whether you’re visiting Singapore for a weekend getaway, family trip, or quick shopping run, knowing how the Singapore Tourist Refund Scheme works can help you save more while enjoying the Lion City. 🧴👟🎧

In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how Singapore’s tax refund system works, how much you can get back, who’s eligible, and my own step-by-step experience. 💼✈️💳

🧐 What is a Singapore Tax Refund?

When you shop in Singapore, you pay a Goods and Services Tax (GST) — which is 9% as of 2024. But here’s the best part: as a non-resident tourist, you can get a refund on GST for eligible purchases made at participating stores under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). 🙌

It’s like a mini cashback reward just for shopping across the Causeway 😄🛒

💰 How Much is GST in Singapore?

GST is currently 9% on most goods. If you’re shopping for luxury items, electronics, or branded skincare, that can add up quickly. Good news is, you can get most of that refunded! 💳💸

🔙 How Much Can I Get Back?

After administrative fees, you can usually expect a refund of around 7%–8%. For example, I spent about SGD 800 (~RM2,800) and got back around SGD 60 (~RM210) — which I happily spent on snacks at Changi Airport! 😆🍫

Location is very convenient. In between 2 MRT stations, Havelock station exit 4 and Great World Station. We’ve upgraded room at top floor. Nice scenery. Bed and pillows are very comfortable. Breakfast is amazing. There’s one thing that made us disappointed is….the hotel staff are not attentive enough towards guests. When I book this hotel, I’ve stated in the remarks that this staycation is to celebrate my husband’s birthday. However, the hotel staff didn’t prepare anything or give any complimentary cake to surprise us.

I stayed here for a week because I was too lazy to switch hotels. The location is great, just a few minutes' walk to Orchard Road and the MRT station, and there's a bus stop right outside, making transportation very convenient. However, it seems like they don't have any Chinese-speaking staff, so it might not be ideal for independent travelers who don't speak English well. I also have to complain about the housekeeping; it was obvious they did a very perfunctory job. When they changed the sheets, they'd take my pajamas off the bed and instead of folding them or at least putting them back on the bed, they'd leave them on the bedside table or even tucked inside the drawer. I bring most of my own toiletries and rarely use the hotel's, but even for the few things I did use, they weren't replenished during cleaning. There's also no complimentary bottled water in the room, even though I saw full cases of water on the cleaning cart, which makes me assume you have to specifically ask for it.

An excellent stay that exceeded expectations. We were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary room upgrade, which immediately elevated the experience with a more spacious, well-appointed layout and refined interior details. The hotel was also exceptionally baby-friendly—a clean, sturdy, and thoughtfully prepared baby crib was provided, making the stay comfortable and stress-free for families. The highlight was the majestic Garden by the Bay view, visible from the room and balcony, offering a serene, lush panorama that felt both calming and iconic, especially with natural daylight filling the space. Overall, a seamless blend of comfort, thoughtful hospitality, and an outstanding view—highly recommended.

The hotel boasts an excellent location right next to CHIJMES, with Raffles City just across the street, making shopping and dining incredibly convenient. We arrived at the hotel at 11:30 PM, and the front desk clerk gave us a huge, great-view room – a three-room suite with views from two sides. It was beyond our expectations, and we even saw fireworks on New Year's Eve! The hotel's location is excellent, though the soundproofing isn't great.

After my business was done, I deliberately stayed an extra night to enjoy Vietnam's 'Little Paris of the East,' but honestly, I was a bit disappointed! The hotel is right in the heart of Saigon's old quarter, close to the Opera House and the Governor's Palace. It's surrounded by Saigon's bustling commercial district, so you can just step out and explore. The Governor's Palace and Ho Chi Minh Memorial Square are a short ten-minute walk away, and it's close to the Saigon River. The hotel is a charming, old-world five-star property; the facilities are a bit dated, but they are well-maintained and clean. The bed is very comfortable, and you can watch international Chinese channels and Dragon TV. Outside the window, you can see the Saigon riverside and commercial area, witnessing Saigon's development and changes firsthand. However, the motorbike noise is quite loud – it truly is a kingdom of motorbikes! It's also very convenient to find Vietnamese food and the bar street is nearby. All in all, it was a decent stay!

This was my first time in Singapore, and I blindly chose this hotel from many options because the pictures looked great and it was close to the MTR (subway). Upon arrival, I found that it truly is very close to the MTR; you can access the station by walking through the mall without even going outside. It's about a kilometer from the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands, and there are attractions like the National Gallery nearby. It's perfect for an after-dinner stroll, as it might even be faster to walk than take public transport for those short distances. The service was excellent, and the breakfast was incredibly rich and delicious. It might be the best hotel breakfast I've ever had, definitely on par with a Park Hyatt. I had read some reviews mentioning poor soundproofing, but I didn't experience that during my stay. The hotel has wooden floors, with a carpeted area around the bed, which is great for someone with allergies like me. The hotel is truly beautiful, and the Christmas decorations were very thoughtfully done. I really felt like I didn't want to leave and would definitely stay here again next time. The only downside, in my opinion, was the hairdryer. It really didn't match the overall decor; it was an old-fashioned type that was noisy and didn't have concentrated airflow, making it slow to dry hair. I hope they can upgrade the hairdryers next time.

The hotel's location is truly excellent, making it convenient to get anywhere, and there are plenty of dining options, with many highly-rated restaurants right in the building. As for the service, well, the best is the older Black doorman, who is so dedicated and loves chatting with kids. Others are more enthusiastic if you speak English. The worst was an older Black bell desk attendant; he was polite when Malaysians and Chinese guests were around, but his attitude was genuinely mediocre otherwise. After noticing this difference on the first day, I just spoke English throughout the rest of my stay, and the front desk service was genuinely good – they proactively offered late check-out, chatted, and gave gifts to my child. I can understand, though, that during Chinese New Year, the number of tourists skyrockets, and the lobby was full of Chinese families waiting for rooms or checking out, almost like an airport terminal. As for the room itself, the city view balcony room wasn't bad, and the view from the 25th floor, which isn't super high, was also lovely (see image below).

Stayed 3D2N with my daughter to meet my youngest daughter from SMU. The hotel nearby SMU Campus . The hotel room is very big room compare i survey the other hotel, , newly renovated and clean. The staff are very friendly, especially the front counter staff. The hotel provides a water filter machine on every floor (reminder: bring your own tumbler 👍). The location is very convenient for MRT — just a few steps away from Bras Basah MRT 🚇, and Bus Stop are available directly to Suntec City Mall and Marina Bay. Within a 5-minute walk, you can reach Bugis Street, Bugis Junction, and Bugis+ for shopping and food. In front of the the Bugis Malll, there’s a Chinese hawker stall — the chicken rice is nice, cheap, and delicious 😋. Overall, it’s a great place to stay. Worth the money, and I will definitely come back for my next trip!

The staff were courteous and even surprised me with a small birthday gift, which added a personal touch to my stay. ## Environment: The location is good, very close to the subway, making transportation convenient. There's a convenience store downstairs, so it's easy to grab a bite if you get hungry at night. We East Asians might find the smell in some areas a bit uncomfortable (mainly in the elevator; the lobby and rooms are fine. You know the drill). ## Hygiene: The room was quite clean. ## Service: Check-in involved a bit of a wait. For Singapore, it seems there are fewer staff who speak Chinese. Also, my breakfast records for two days weren't logged, so I had to explain and confirm with the staff every morning. ## Breakfast: Perhaps to cater to the needs of Indian guests, the breakfast here was truly difficult to describe... ## Facilities: The hotel facilities are quite old, but! The important thing is that the rooms are really spacious. If you're not a fan of Singapore's super small-sized rooms, I highly recommend this place. Additionally, the hotel decor might remind you of the golden nineties; it's quite retro and stylish in its own way.

I brought my whole family, including kids and elders, to Singapore and chose this serviced apartment. For Singapore, where space is at a premium, the room was quite spacious. The mini-bar was restocked daily with complimentary drinks, including coffee, tea bags, and snacks. And the best part was the free ice cream served in the lobby every afternoon from 3 to 6 PM – absolutely fantastic! The room decor is modern, and it was cleaned thoroughly every day. The front desk service was excellent; they patiently answered my questions about directions and how to get to shops multiple times. The water pressure in the bathroom was a little low; it would be perfect if it were stronger.

The hotel is conveniently located near a shopping mall and is easily accessible by bus and MRT. Although the room for two was slightly compact, it was well equipped with all the basic amenities, including a safe box, hairdryer, hangers, and a fridge. The location is absolutely fantastic! You can walk to Fort Canning Park, and Clarke Quay is right next door, which gets really lively at night with a whole street of bars and late-night food. It's also not far from the MRT. On our first day, we took a cable car to Sentosa Island and used GRAB for the round trip, but after that, we mostly used the MRT for getting around. Bus stop just outside hotel entrance and took us straight to chinatown too very affordable!
