Best Things to Do in Kuching for Your Perfect Getaway | Trip.com

My first thoughts of Kuching were of lush greenery, serene river views, and the unique charm of Sarawak’s capital city. Kuching, with its blend of colonial architecture, local heritage, and laid-back atmosphere, feels like a peaceful retreat compared to the fast pace of Kuala Lumpur. Life here moves slower, and it's easy to unwind—whether you're taking a leisurely walk along the Kuching Waterfront or exploring the quiet lanes of Carpenter Street, there’s a calming rhythm to the city.

Malaysians will enjoy the local shopping experience, from traditional handicraft shops to weekend markets offering Sarawak souvenirs and unique finds. The food scene is a true highlight—think hearty laksa, crispy midin belacan, and fresh seafood that suits every taste and budget. If you’re looking to relax, Kuching also offers wellness options, including massage parlours and day spas. Wondering where to stay in Kuching? You’ll find everything from affordable guesthouses to boutique hotels with plenty of character.

🌅 Stroll Along the Kuching Waterfront at Sunset

Kuching Waterfront

As the golden sun began to dip below the horizon, I found myself walking along the Kuching Waterfront, mesmerised by the warm hues dancing across the calm Sarawak River. A soft breeze brushed against my skin, carrying the smell of satay grilling from nearby food stalls. The rhythmic sound of water lapping against the embankment mixed with the distant beat of a street musician’s drum. I paused to watch children laughing by the fountains while couples captured moments beneath the glowing Darul Hana Bridge. With every step, I felt more connected to the city’s gentle charm. The view of the grand State Legislative Assembly building lit up the skyline—majestic, calm, and unforgettable.

This is probably my 5th or 6th time staying at The Waterfront Hoteland for good reason! It remains my favourite hotel in the city. The view from the room is simply magnificent, whether day or night, and always takes my breath away. I absolutely love the pool area it’s such a relaxing spot to unwind, especially with the scenic backdrop. Another major plus is the hotel’s direct connection to the mall, which makes shopping and dining super convenient without having to leave the building. The room is well-equipped with complete toiletries, which I really appreciate. Everything is kept clean and comfortable, making each stay feel like a mini escape. One small downside: the toilet floor tends to be quite slippery. Although a small toilet mat is provided, it doesn’t quite cover enough area to prevent slipping, so that’s something to be cautious about.

The room itself was very big and spacious line a 5 star hotel but it was looking rather worn and dull aesthetically speaking . Perhaps because it is before renovation. Currently there is a renovation and some parts of the hotel are already complete, im sure guests would love it at that time. The service was pretty good though.

I stayed at the Imperial Riverbank Hotel and overall had a pleasant experience. The room is average-sized but very comfortable, with a good bed that made for a restful sleep. I really liked that the desk is long and spacious enough to spread out my things, there are convenient sockets just beside the bed, making it easy to charge my phone and other devices. The air conditioning works very well and kept the room nice and cool throughout my stay. The bathroom is quite small and could use a few more amenities, but it was clean and functional. One of the best things about this hotel is its excellent location. It’s right by the riverside, close to the old streets, and within walking distance. The Darul Hana Bridge is just a 10–15 minute walk away, and the famous Cat Statue is about five minutes on foot. There’s even a 7-Eleven next door. Overall, Imperial Riverbank Hotel is a convenient and comfortable place to stay, especially if you want to explore the city on foot and have easy access to nearby shops and eateries.

I’ve been to Kuching for business travel, and Raia Hotel & Convention Centre Kuching truly stands out as one of the best choices for business travellers. It’s a relatively new, modern, and well-maintained hotel — conveniently located just minutes away from Kuching International Airport (KIA). The facilities are complete and equipped with good-quality, well-kept amenities suitable for both work and rest. The rooms are exceptionally clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed for business stays. Most importantly, I would like to give special credit to all the staff — they are genuinely friendly, helpful, and passionate about what they do. Their warm hospitality and professionalism reflect the true spirit of Sarawakian service, making every stay pleasant and memorable. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kuching, whether for business or leisure For guests who need local transport, I also recommend Aris Rental Services (Motor Kuching) — they offer reliable motorbike rental with excellent service. For those who may not know, the lobby is located on level 2 and is accessible by lift. The room I stayed in was very spacious; however, the cleanliness could be improved, as there were stains on the white duvet cover. I was on the 10th floor, and it was quiet at night, despite being in the city center. A water purifier is available along the corridor, and cooking utensils are provided, so you can prepare your own meals if you'd like. My recent stay at the hotel was overall satisfactory, though not particularly memorable. The check-in process was smooth, and the staff were generally polite and helpful throughout my visit. The room was clean and had the basic amenities needed for a comfortable stay, but it lacked the attention to detail or charm that might have made the experience stand out. While the location was convenient and made it easy to get around, some aspects of the hotel felt a bit dated and could benefit from renovation or improvement. The facilities were functional, though not especially modern or luxurious. Noise levels were manageable, and housekeeping maintained a reasonable standard of cleanliness. In summary, the hotel served its purpose for a short trip. It wasn’t exceptional, but it provided a reasonable level of comfort. With a few updates and some more attention to service quality, it could offer a much more enjoyable experience.

Generally very good stay. Will stay again. It's good value for money. Aircon is cold enough. Bedding clean and comfortable. Breakfast was ok - nice kolo mee. The grounds are very well kept - pls see photo. There are a no of necessary improvements though 1. Housekeeping not great - body finished but not refilled. Had to ring but already shampooed. 2. Bathtub ceiling too low. I'm 1.78 m and had to crouch to shower 3. Low water pressure 4. Breakfast pastries hard and dry

The hotel is located in the town area, just walking distance to the main bazaar, waterfront, and other tourist attractions. Very convenient. The pool and cardio room is located at the other wing, there is a bridge to walk over.

The facilities are a bit dated and show their age. The location isn't ideal for walking to attractions, so you'll need to rely on Grab. Conveniently, there's a 7-Eleven right next door for essentials. The staff were very warm and friendly.

Hotel located a little quiet area. Chinese restaurant and many kopitiam shops around. Hotel room given was rather small. Although there were power points but it cannot fit the size of my plug so I had to use the only power point behind the TV. Chair was tall, table a bit low so a bit difficult to sit but I still use it nevertheless. One night was itching all over and had house cleaning to change the bedsheets. While the staff was changing, I realise the mattress protector was quite dirty. I m glad they responded quickly and change it. Was a pleasant sleep without itch after that. House keeping was very fast n helpful to attend to our needs. Generally it is a very nice place to stay despite some mentioned issues.
