Vietnam Tax Refund Guide – Claim VAT as a Tourist

Gambar Profil Penulis

Hi friends! 👋 I just returned from an exciting shopping trip in Vietnam – and I’m still buzzing from all the great buys! From beauty products and fashion to unique local souvenirs and electronics, Vietnam is a shopper’s paradise. But here’s a tip many international visitors might not know: you can actually claim a tax refund on your shopping in Vietnam!

That’s right – with Vietnam’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), eligible tourists can get a refund on the Value-Added Tax (VAT) paid on purchases from participating stores. So, if you’re planning a shopping spree in Vietnam, don’t miss this opportunity to save. Let me guide you through everything you need to know – from how the refund process works to how you can claim it easily before flying home. ✨💼💵

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemption in Vietnam

When shopping in Vietnam, you’ll often notice that prices include the 8% Value-Added Tax (VAT), which is applied to most goods and services.

But here’s the great news: International tourists can get a refund on this tax for eligible purchases made at participating stores under Vietnam’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of phở or bánh mì 🍜
✅ Extra beauty products or handicrafts to take home 💅
✅ And more unique souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Value-Added Tax (VAT) in Vietnam

Vietnam’s VAT is set at 8%, and it applies to many common purchases, including:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍬 Snacks and local treats
🥤 Non-alcoholic drinks

You might not notice it at first, but the VAT can quietly add up—especially when shopping in popular places like Saigon Centre, Lotte Department Store, or Aeon Mall.

🧠 Tip: Look out for stores with the “VAT Refund for Tourists” logo, and always confirm if the displayed price includes VAT. Most stores do, but it’s smart to double-check!

📜 Vietnam’s Current Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible?

In Vietnam, tax refunds for international tourists fall under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), and only specific items are eligible. Here’s a clear breakdown of what qualifies:

1. General Goods

This includes items such as clothing, electronics, souvenirs, accessories, and other non-consumable products.

Conditions:

  • Minimum spend: VND 2 million (in a single receipt) at a participating store.
  • Purchases must be made within 60 days before your departure from Vietnam.
  • Items must be taken out of the country within this time frame.
  • You must depart from a designated international airport such as Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City), Noi Bai (Hanoi), Da Nang, or Phu Quoc.

2. Consumable Goods

Some consumables, such as packaged snacks or sealed personal care products, may be eligible for refund – but they must be unused and carried out of Vietnam in your checked or carry-on luggage.

Important Notes:

  • Refunds apply only to purchases made at approved TRS retailers – look for shops displaying the “VAT Refund for Tourists” logo.
  • You must present the items, original receipts, completed VAT refund form, and your passport at the refund counter before check-in.
  • ⚠️ Not all shops allow combining receipts or refund both item categories, so always check with the cashier or look for the TRS signage before you buy!

Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Vietnam?

To qualify for a VAT refund under Vietnam’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), you must meet the following conditions:

You must be:

  • A non-Vietnamese citizen
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Visiting Vietnam on a tourist visa or under visa exemption
  • Departing Vietnam by air from one of the designated international airports (e.g., Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai, Da Nang, or Phu Quoc)

You must:

  • Present your original passport at the time of purchase (photocopies are not accepted)
  • Spend at least VND 2 million in a single receipt at a participating TRS store
  • Make the purchase within 60 days before your departure date
  • Take the goods out of Vietnam — items must be for personal use only, not for resale or commercial purposes

✈️ Important: Customs officers may inspect your purchases before departure, so be sure to keep all receipts, your passport, and the purchased items easily accessible in your carry-on luggage.

🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How to Claim It in Vietnam

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you claim your VAT refund in Vietnam:

🛍️ At the Store:

  • Shop at a participating Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) retailer. Look for the “VAT Refund for Tourists” logo.
  • Inform the cashier that you plan to claim a tax refund.
  • Present your original passport for verification. The store will record your information and issue a VAT refund form along with the purchase receipt.
  • Keep all your tax refund documents and receipts safe and organized—preferably in a pouch or folder for easy access.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before your flight, as the refund process can take some time.
  • Head to the Customs Inspection Counter before check-in to verify your goods. Present your passport, receipts, refund forms, and the actual items you purchased. Customs may inspect them.
  • After customs approval, proceed to the VAT Refund Counter, usually located in the departure area after immigration.
  • Depending on the airport, your refund will be processed either in cash (Vietnamese Dong) or credited to your credit card.

🧠 Tip: Refund counter procedures and operating hours may vary by airport, so it’s a good idea to check in advance. Keep your goods and documents in your carry-on for easy inspection.

Overall, it was excellent! The facilities were comprehensive, and the staff were very friendly, with some even offering Chinese language services. The location is convenient, and there's a supermarket nearby for any essentials. I would definitely choose to stay here again on my next visit!

We stayed here during our trip to Vietnam for my father's birthday. It was his first time in Vietnam, and he had a very comfortable stay. Our whole family had a wonderful time. We are grateful for the warm hospitality of all the staff. They even surprised my father with a cake for his birthday, which made for a truly special memory. He was absolutely delighted. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast, with Vietnamese dishes like pho and banh mi. It was very satisfying. Overall, we had a comfortable stay and it's a wonderful hotel that we would definitely like to visit again. Thank you very much.

I had a lot of hotels to choose from in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. I'd stayed at another one twice before and really liked it, but this time I wanted to be even closer to the city center. After a lot of searching, I picked this one and was absolutely thrilled after checking in! First off, the location is unbeatable, truly unbeatable. It's right next to the Opera House, next to the Sheraton, and super close to all the attractions. Everything is within walking distance downstairs, and if you want to shop, it's incredibly convenient with various malls right below. Plus, there are tons of great restaurants and cafes nearby. Seriously, it's just awesome. I'll definitely stay here again next time!

Hello, I was the guest in room 206, checking in on June 30th. After resting for a bit, I went out around 3 PM. When I left, my suitcase was open, and inside were clothes and a GoPro camera, which was attached to a neck strap mount and not easy to remove. When I returned in the evening, I noticed the room had been tidied. The next morning, I checked out and left my luggage at the hotel. Around 6 PM that afternoon, I returned to pick up my luggage to go to the airport. During that time, I opened my suitcase once at the luggage storage area to put something in. I didn't use the GoPro at all during my two days and one night in Ho Chi Minh City, so I didn't pay close attention to it. Afterward, I flew directly to Hanoi, and at the hotel there, I discovered my GoPro was missing from my suitcase, with only the neck strap mount remaining. I contacted you to help me look for the camera, but you said it hadn't been seen. After returning home, I carefully replayed all the events in my mind, and it's only possible that it went missing at your hotel. I hope that after seeing this review, you can help me check the surveillance footage again and contact me.

Hotel Nikko Saigon — one of the best hotel stays I’ve ever had My stay at Hotel Nikko Saigon was genuinely exceptional. I have stayed at other Nikko properties before, including Nikko Kansai Airport and Nikko Guam, and I can honestly say that Nikko Saigon exceeded both of them. In fact, the level of service was even better than what I experienced at my previous destination in Singapore, including at the Marriott hotel where I stayed. From the moment I arrived, I was incredibly impressed by the staff. The doormen and reception staff were waiting to greet guests at the entrance, and one of the staff members noticed my Japanese passport and kindly spoke to me in Japanese. She explained everything about the hotel and even helped carry my heavy backpack. These small details made me feel genuinely welcomed and cared for. One moment in particular made a very strong impression on me. I was travelling alone, and when my Grab driver suddenly started asking me for additional payment, claiming that he had “forgotten to add it through the app,” I was completely caught off guard. I had no cash with me because I thought I could manage a 22-hour layover entirely cashless. I wasn’t even sure what amount the driver was asking for in the end, but the hotel staff immediately stepped in. They scanned a QR code, checked something on the driver’s phone, and I asked whether he had paid or whether I could transfer the amount or add it to my hotel bill. The staff simply told me not to worry about it and handled the situation themselves. As a young woman travelling alone, I honestly don’t know what I would have done if I had arrived at a hotel where the staff had not intervened. The two doormen in particular made sure the situation was handled and that I was safely away from the car. I am incredibly grateful to them. The turn-down service was also absolutely outstanding. It was so seamless and thoughtful that it genuinely surprised me. The staff entered the room while I was away, and although I had left my belongings somewhat scattered around, they had taken such care with everything. They had even carefully flattened out the wrinkled receipts I had left on the table, cleared away my empty coffee cup, and left chocolates on the bed. It was an incredibly thoughtful touch. The only thing I would mention as a small concern is that I was not aware that the staff had entered my room while I was away. Since I had left some personal belongings scattered around, I would have appreciated being informed beforehand. That said, the care they took with the room and the little details more than demonstrated how attentive the staff were. Literally, this is one of the best hotel experiences I have ever had. The combination of genuinely warm hospitality, attentiveness, and thoughtful service was outstanding. Hotel Nikko Saigon has set an extremely high standard for me, and I would happily return without hesitation.

Description is overselling this property a bit but all in all a good place to stay. Good space and design is nice though finish a bit worn. Balcony tub seemed interesting but when the view is a huge AC vent a few meters across the alley it wasn’t that inviting in the end. Anyway did not encounter any real problems during the stay and the staff was consistently good. Location is good, yet quiet at night. Check- in procedure was overly complicated and I get the idea with welcome drink and snack and someone coming to you with the paperwork as a kind of premium experience but I think its better saved for a resort than a city hotel. Did like the restaurant and breakfast spread is very good with both local and international options. All in all a good stay but in my personal opinion value for money was less good than some of the other properties in this area.

Pros: amazingly delicious buffet breakfast from western to asian cuisines. Delicious food and always fresh seasonal fruits. Menu changes daily. Their Triple Roomnis quiet spacious with bonggavillas on window sills. Room is cleaned and linens changed on a daily basis. Bar at the rooftop with jacuzzis and spa pool which added to the zen vibes. Lobby is dimly lighted but just enough to light the way which I think uphholds to its ZEN vibes. The location is superb. Next to it are spas for hair, nails, massage and 3 mins walk right through ben thanh market, saigon square, saigon center. 10 mins walk to Notre Dame Cathedral. Easy to catch Grab. Staff are all very friendly, helpful and communicates in English well. Cons: they don't have a swimming pool as what is advertised on its amenities. It's more like a spa pool where clients can sit, dip and maybe drink some coctails while watching the night lights and relaxing with the zen environment. However, the spa pool is perfect for my 8 yo nephew. He can play, swim on the pool without us worrying that the water might be deep for him. Bath tub is high so its not good for a short elderly client who got issues with mobility. My 78 yo mom got a hard time climbing in and out of the tub as its also slippery. We finally managed by letting her sit on th edge of the tub first before putting her foot in/out of the tub and putting towel on the floor of the tub while she's showering.

I visit Ho Chi Minh City every 3-4 months and always book my stay here. It's close to Ben Thanh Market and within walking distance to Bui Vien. The breakfast is also excellent. Plus, Manager Tien is incredibly kind and perceptive; even with my limited English, communication during check-in and when addressing any issues was never a problem.

The hotel is conveniently located in District 1, close to every attractions and restaurants. What I asbsolutely love about this hotel is 24-hour stay policy. I check in around 1AM and check out around 10PM, which is perfect and no other hotel in the city offers this kind of flexibility. The hotel holds a youthful vibe. You can feel it through their modern, chic design and the lobby space. The room, however, would be a little small for 2 guests. When I arrive, my room had a stinky smell of mold. I told the front desk and they brought in a dehumidifier immediately.

You can see the river from the room, and there were no strange odors. However, the soundproofing wasn't great, as I could hear noise from the hallway. Overall, it was a good stay. It's also very convenient to get to Japan Town, making it suitable for solo travelers or those with family and friends.

I was a bit skeptical about the cleanliness and facilities since it's an old hotel, but I was highly satisfied with everything. Many people recommend it for its location, but I'd like to recommend it for its hotel facilities and the staff's attitude. I'd definitely recommend this hotel to Koreans traveling to Ho Chi Minh City. One convenient aspect compared to other hotels was being able to call a Grab right to the hotel entrance. Many other 5-star hotels have congested entrances, making it difficult to call a Grab there, forcing you to walk out a bit to hail one. Plus, I thought it would be great for private car rentals too, as there's ample space at the entrance for drivers to park and wait without inconvenience. My only regret was that my 4-night, 5-day trip felt too short, and I wanted to extend my stay by another 3 nights, even changing my flight schedule. However, despite being a fairly large hotel, all rooms were fully booked on the third additional night, so I could only extend for 2 days and had to book elsewhere for the last night. Personally, I had a better impression of this hotel than the Premier Residences Phu Quoc. I had a great 6-day stay here!

This is my go-to hotel whenever I'm in Ho Chi Minh City. It truly feels like coming home. It's a chain of serviced apartments, offering one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom layouts. Each type of apartment has the same basic layout and decor. The cleanliness is so exceptional that even someone with OCD would approve. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking, and the best part is you don't even have to do the dishes or clean the pots—housekeeping comes daily to clean the apartment and tidy up the kitchen.

Breakfast

Overall, the hardware is excellent, but the front desk service needs improvement. My overall stay was actually quite good. The hotel lobby is spacious and beautiful, with a strong sense of design, and there are many comfortable seats, making the wait during check-in quite pleasant. The room was also satisfactory – clean, spacious, and equipped with a bathtub; the overall hardware facilities were excellent. The breakfast was the highlight. The breakfast area is on the top floor, where you can walk out onto the outdoor terrace to enjoy views of Ho Chi Minh City. The morning breeze was very refreshing. The food selection was incredibly diverse, including Vietnamese, Chinese, Western, Japanese, and Indian cuisines, offering such a wide variety it felt like a dinner buffet, just without seafood. One or two floors above the top floor, there’s also a large infinity pool, with a very relaxing environment. However, the pool is quite deep, reaching around shoulder height, so be mindful when using it. However, some unpleasant incidents occurred on the day of check-out. There's an electronic entertainment/game area on the 4th floor, and staff mentioned that each guest room receives a USD25 voucher. After I collected the voucher for my room, my friend was checking out of their room next to me. I reminded the front desk staff to give them their voucher, but the staff member seemed to ignore me and continued with the check-out process. Only afterwards did they say that since the room was already checked out, they couldn't issue the voucher. When I tried to explain further, the staff member became impatient and even slammed documents on the counter, making their colleagues a bit awkward. Ultimately, I had to escalate the issue to another manager, who then helped to cancel the original check-out process and re-issue the voucher to my friend. Additionally, for a hotel of this caliber, I had expected a welcome drink to be offered proactively, but it was self-service, requiring guests to fetch it themselves. I felt that the attention to service details could be better. In summary, the hotel's hardware, rooms, breakfast, and pool are all quite good, but the front desk's service attitude and how they handle guest inquiries still have room for improvement. The hardware is highly recommended, but the service experience didn't fully align with the hotel's positioning.

A quaint and cosy hotel in a good location, walking distance to Saigon Centre, Saigon Square, Ben Thanh Market, Bookstreet and Vincom Centre. Room is spacious but can have more lighting. Sound proofing is not very good as we can hear an elderly couple quarreling on our 2nd night at a building rooftop near the hotel. Made a remark in my booking on our wedding anniversary and hotel made the effort to design the bed. There were issues with the aircon before we checked in and we were offered drinks on their 10th floor cafe (which served hi-tea for guest daily). Hotel breakfast spread is good, mix of local food and intercontinental breakfast. Overall good for the location and breakfast selection.

Hello! We stayed in Ho Chi Minh City in early August 2026. We booked this hotel in advance and didn't regret it! We even returned for another night on our way back, which is the best review of our stay! The design, furniture, and interior items are all in my favorite colonial (I assume) style, which gives the hotel an authentic feel! The breakfasts are also worth mentioning positively; there's a buffet selection, and you can order several additional dishes from the menu (traditional soup, eggs Benedict on toast, pancakes)! You can have breakfast either inside or on the veranda. The restaurant is located on the 10th floor and offers a great view! The restaurant also operates à la carte. In the evening, you can truly enjoy dishes in a pleasant atmosphere with a beautiful view of the city lights! The à la carte prices at the restaurant are somewhat higher than average, but standard for restaurants with a similar ambiance. The dishes are interesting. The hotel staff is pleasant, very responsive, and ready to help at any moment! Our interactions with the hotel staff were very comfortable. Thank you again! The location is also excellent – not on a busy road, yet close to attractions, activities, and cafes. We walked to the main shopping centers! We definitely recommend this hotel! And perhaps we'll even return to stay there ourselves someday!

The room was tiny and not worth the price; it felt more like a motel than a hotel. The breakfast buffet wasn't very rich – wouldn't recommend it. No wonder there were so few people... In the public facilities, the two treadmills in the gym seemed different, which was odd. The pool was actually quite small (it looked much bigger in photos), but the rooftop view was pretty good. Some amenities were available on the second floor for self-service. Also, the restaurant was located one floor above the guest rooms, which was a bit strange to have to take the stairs up. Luckily, we were assigned to the top floor, so we could just walk up directly without having to take the elevator and then stairs. The only good thing was its convenient location in the city center; the area around it was also very lively. The room cleaning was spotless, and the front desk staff were very friendly. The TV could connect to Netflix and YouTube. Plus, there were free washing and drying machines, which was a nice bonus. If I were to stay again, I wouldn't add breakfast, and if the price is over 2,000 NTD, I wouldn't choose this place again. (I had previously stayed at another 4-star hotel at a similar price point, but the overall experience here was very disappointing in comparison. That other hotel was also in District 1, with much larger rooms and bathrooms, and it also had a gym and pool, plus a more extensive breakfast buffet.)

This is a hotel of contradictions. The facade is impressive. It's centrally located in District 1 near restaurants, shops and the Western quarter. The buffet breakfast selection is pleasing. The room size is generous. Staff are friendly and helpful. There's a forward thinking eco-friendly policy which clearly implemented throughout the hotel. However, the hotel is let down by some of its facilities. For example, in the bathroom a spa has been placed under a shower head so that when you shower the water runs down the wall and floods across the bathroom floor from one side to the other and in front of the hand basin. The hot and cold water taps turn on in opposite directions and the cold tap is not fitted properly which causes it to move. My children were unable to turn the shower on or off without adult help. The shower head is also too low and my 6 foot husband had to crouch down to shower. Another problem area is the rooftop pool area. The clear rooptop pool perimeter fence is woefully too low. I watched a child climb out of the pool to the ledge between the pool and the perimeter fence and I was very worried for his safety. One wrong slip or stumble and there's nothing stopping the child from toppling over the edge and 11 floors down. This hotel has a lot going for it but also has further room for improvement.

Here are some helpful tips I wish I had known before shopping in Vietnam – learn from my experience! 👇

🔖 Keep Your Passport Accessible

Always have your original passport ready when shopping at participating stores—you’ll need to show it to process your VAT refund paperwork.

🗃️ Stay Organized

Keep all your receipts, VAT refund forms, and purchase documents in one place. A small folder or pouch makes it easy and prevents anything from getting lost.

🛍️ Plan Your Purchases Wisely

Aim to spend VND 2 million or more in a single receipt at a TRS store to qualify for the refund. It’s better to make larger purchases at fewer stores than several small ones that won’t qualify.

Keep Your Goods Easily Accessible

Customs may inspect your purchases at the airport, so keep the items unpacked and in your carry-on luggage for quick access.

📍 Airport Refund Counters Are Your Backup

If you didn’t complete the refund process in-store, don’t worry. You can still claim your VAT refund at designated counters at airports like Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc.

📱 Use a Translation App

While many staff are helpful, not everyone speaks English fluently. Apps like Google Translate can make communication faster and smoother.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Pay with a card that offers good exchange rates and no foreign fees—you’ll get better value than exchanging cash.

Final Thoughts – It’s Totally Worth It!

Shopping in Vietnam is already an exciting experience, but being able to claim a VAT refund? That’s a major bonus! 🏆 The process might seem a little confusing at first, but once you understand the steps, it’s actually quite easy.

If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, my advice is: shop smart, shop tax-free! 🛍️✨ And don’t forget your passport and maybe leave a little extra space in your suitcase—you’re going to need it. 😉
