OMNY

Gambar Profil Penulis

Travelling around New York City is now easier with OMNY (One Metro New York), the city’s contactless fare payment system. Instead of purchasing separate transit tickets, Malaysian travellers can simply tap a contactless bank card, smartphone, or smartwatch to pay for rides on the subway and buses. As OMNY gradually replaces the MetroCard, it offers a faster and more convenient option for visitors exploring the city.

What is OMNY?

Source: OMNY Info

OMNY is the official contactless fare payment system used across much of New York City’s public transport network. It provides a quick and convenient tap-and-go method for paying fares without the need for paper tickets or cash. Travellers can simply tap an accepted payment method at the reader before boarding or entering the station.

For Malaysian travellers, OMNY can be especially convenient because there is often no need to queue for tickets or purchase a separate transport card if an existing contactless bank card is accepted. This makes travelling around the city more efficient, particularly for short visits.

To ensure smooth usage, travellers should confirm that international transactions are enabled, sufficient balance or available credit is maintained, overseas payments are not blocked by the bank, and the card supports contactless payments. It also provides added convenience if a physical bank card is misplaced during the trip.

The hotel's location is excellent, and the doorman service was outstanding, definitely deserving a bigger tip. My main dissatisfaction was that the room didn't match the photos; there was no city view, just a dense array of other guest rooms directly across, clearly visible.

This is a great hotel 1. First of all, the location is very good, located on Park Avenue and 28th Street, next to Fifth Avenue and only 1 minute away from the 28th Street subway station, which is very convenient for going to North or South Manhattan. We took the subway to Sumit, then walked along the way to Times Square and the shopping street, and finally passed the Empire State Building and walked back in less than half an hour! 2. A 5-minute walk away is a large supermarket WholeFood. It has a large buffet restaurant with a lot of oriental food, which is very convenient and delicious. There are nearly 10 kinds of soups to choose from. The buffet has a lot of cold dishes and cooked food. It feels like the problem of eating is completely solved. In addition, it also includes a sushi restaurant and a pizza restaurant, so no matter what kind of diet you need, it can be solved. Although the price is not as cheap as imagined, in New York, I think it is worth the money 😊 3. Although the equipment in the room is a bit old, it is modern so it doesn't look old. In addition, the size of the room is considered large in New York, which is a big advantage. 4. We stayed here for four nights. Room number 1401 was at least very quiet. The air conditioner, which is the most criticized in the United States, was very noisy. It didn't happen here at all. And its LCD air conditioner control was the simplest and most convenient to adjust by myself that I have ever used, so I slept well for four nights. 5. The staff is of good quality and helpful. The room service is mainly Chinese, so there is no problem in communication. They are also very polite, so I think this is a plus.

The location is fantastic, right in the heart of Times Square. It's super lively downstairs with tons of great food options nearby. The only downsides are the traffic congestion, which is to be expected, and the rooms are a bit on the small side. Other than that, everything was great, and the convenience factor truly can't be beaten.

I had a wonderful stay at a hotel near Wall Street in New York. The location was perfect, within walking distance of major financial landmarks and subway stations, making it easy to explore the city. The room was clean, modern, and well-equipped, with a comfortable bed and great city views. The staff were professional and attentive, always ready to help with any requests. Despite being in a busy area, the hotel was surprisingly quiet at night. Overall, it offered excellent value for money and a convenient base for both business and leisure travelers. I would definitely stay here again.

Room and sheets were very clean and I was given a quiet spot which I was really happy about. Water was well heated and pressure was perfect as well. Loved that I was able to cast my phone screen on to the TV as well. Room size was perfect for me because I was travelling solo. Location was safe and very convenient as well. But I have to say I was disappointed by the lack of bottled water and kettle in the room. I had to get my own bottle and refill it downstairs daily. Apart from this, I’d say I had a great experience and will definitely consider staying here again when I’m back in New York.

This is an older, established hotel with an excellent location right in Midtown Manhattan. It's convenient for taking the subway to the train station. I really appreciated the security guard checking room cards before entering the elevators in the lobby – it made me feel very safe. The room and bathroom were small, likely due to the hotel's age, and the poor soundproofing was a definite downside. The air conditioning was quite loud, but the temperature was stable. The view from the window was nice; you could even see The Edge. Housekeeping cleaned the room daily, and both the security guard and the housekeeping staff were very polite. I arrived from San Francisco at 10 AM, and it was raining and snowing and freezing outside. The front desk said I had to wait until 4 PM to check in, or pay an extra $75 for early check-in, which I couldn't do. Luggage storage wasn't free either; they charged $5 per bag.

Room was quite small and basic, and walls were thin. Staff was very helpful. There is no on site restaurant except for the steakhouse so it was not an option for my 15 night stay to dine there every night. Great location near to Central station. Overall, it was a pleasant stay.

I had a very pleasant stay at this hotel and would definitely recommend it to others. The rooms were clean, spacious, and well-maintained, with all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay. The staff was extremely courteous and always ready to help, which made the experience even better. Check-in and check-out were smooth and hassle-free. The location of the hotel is also a big advantage, as it is easily accessible and close to key areas. The food quality was excellent, with a good variety of options available. The front desk staff were proactive in trying to solve problems, but the cleanliness of the room was disappointing. We didn’t want to know, but we ended up learning the hair color of the previous guest. Having only two elevators was an inconvenience, but the relaxed pace of travel made it more tolerable. Physical OMNY Card

Source: Ellen Design

For travellers who prefer not to use a bank card or mobile wallet, the physical OMNY card is a practical alternative. It works like a reloadable transit card and can be tapped at OMNY readers across New York’s public transport network. This option is useful for visitors who want a dedicated transport card during their stay.

Physical OMNY cards can be purchased from OMNY vending machines located at many subway stations across New York City, as well as selected retail outlets. Availability continues to expand as OMNY replaces the MetroCard system. Top-ups can be made at OMNY vending machines using cash, debit cards, or credit cards, depending on the machine location. Users may also manage balance and reload options through an OMNY online account where available.

The physical OMNY card is especially suitable for travellers who do not wish to use their personal bank card overseas, those without mobile wallet access, families sharing travel funds, or visitors who prefer better control over transport spending.

Important Fare Tip: Use the Same Card Every Time

Source: Automation & Self Services

OMNY fare benefits are linked to the same payment method, so it is important to use one card or one device consistently throughout your trip. If you tap in with your smartphone in the morning and later use the physical bank card linked to that phone, OMNY may recognise them as two separate payment methods. This means your rides may not count together towards the weekly fare cap. To maximise savings, always use the same physical card or the same mobile device linked to that card for every journey.

The standard OMNY fare for subways and local buses is USD 2.90 per ride, which is approximately MYR 13 to MYR 14, depending on the current exchange rate. For travellers taking multiple rides daily, the weekly fare cap can offer good value. OMNY payment methods are generally intended for one passenger per tap. Each traveller should ideally use their own card or device. If two or more people are travelling together, separate payment methods are recommended so that each rider’s trips can be tracked correctly for fare cap benefits.

Fare Cap Advantage for Tourists

Near Shea Stadium

OMNY offers an automatic weekly fare cap, which can be especially valuable for tourists exploring New York City frequently. Once a passenger pays for 12 eligible rides within a rolling 7-day period using the same card, device, or OMNY card, any additional eligible rides during the rest of that 7-day period become free.

This means travellers do not need to buy a separate weekly pass in advance. Simply continue tapping the same payment method, and the system automatically stops charging once the fare cap is reached. For Malaysian travellers making several subway or bus trips each day, this can provide noticeable savings and better convenience.

Based on the standard fare of USD 2.90 per ride, the maximum cost to reach the cap is USD 34.80, which is approximately MYR 155 to MYR 165, depending on the exchange rate. After that, additional eligible rides within the same 7-day window are free.

If Your Malaysian Card Does Not Work

Source: Daily News

If your Malaysian bank card does not work with OMNY, there are several common reasons. In many cases, the issue is related to card settings, bank security controls, or payment processing restrictions rather than the OMNY system itself.

Some banks automatically block overseas transactions for security purposes, while others may require contactless payments to be activated manually. Insufficient balance, unavailable credit limit, or temporary fraud alerts can also cause a transaction to be declined. In some cases, tapping the card too quickly or removing it before the reader responds may also create a payment error.

The good news is that most issues can be resolved quickly. Travellers should try an alternative card, use a mobile wallet linked to the same account, or purchase a physical OMNY card for easier transit access. It is also advisable to notify your bank before travel and enable overseas spending through your banking application.

Contactless Disabled
