Whether you're arriving at the airport with heavy luggage, traveling late at night after the last train, or simply looking for a more comfortable way to get around, taking a taxi can save both time and energy⚡.

What I love most about taxis in Japan is how clean, safe, and reliable they are. The service is excellent, the doors open automatically, and many drivers will even help with your luggage. Plus, with modern taxi apps, booking a ride is now easier than ever. In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about taking taxis in Japan, including the different taxi types, best taxi booking apps, fare rates, payment methods, and useful tips for a smooth journey.

🚖 Different Types of Taxis in Japan

Japan Taxi

If it's your first time taking a taxi in Japan, you might notice that taxis come in different shapes, sizes, and service levels. Unlike some countries, Japan doesn't have a standard taxi color, so don't be surprised if you see black, white, silver, or even colorful taxis on the road.

Japan Taxi

The easiest way to identify a legitimate taxi is to look for the illuminated roof sign and a green license plate (or a black plate with yellow characters for certain commercial vehicles). If you see a regular white private car without these features, don't assume it's a taxi.

Here are the main types of taxis you'll find in Japan:

🚕 Standard Taxi

This is the most common type of taxi and the one most tourists will use. You'll find them everywhere, from airports and train stations to busy city streets. Standard taxis are comfortable, clean, and suitable for 1–4 passengers.

💡 Best for: Everyday travel, sightseeing, and short-distance trips.

🚖 JPN Taxi (Universal Design Taxi)

The JPN Taxi is Japan's newer taxi model designed to be more accessible and spacious. It features a higher roof, sliding doors, and extra luggage space, making it popular with tourists carrying large suitcases.

💡 Best for: Airport transfers, families, and travelers with luggage.

🚐 Jumbo Taxi

Traveling with a group? A Jumbo Taxi can accommodate more passengers than a standard taxi, usually up to 6–9 people depending on the vehicle.

💡 Best for: Families, friend groups, and travelers with multiple suitcases.

Premium or Luxury Taxi

Some taxi companies offer higher-end vehicles with premium services, larger seats, and experienced drivers. These are commonly found in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka.

💡 Best for: Business travelers, special occasions, and those looking for extra comfort.

✈️ Airport Taxi

Many taxi companies offer dedicated airport transfer services that can be booked in advance through an app or online. While generally more expensive than public transport, they're incredibly convenient if you're arriving with heavy luggage or landing late at night.

💡 Best for: Direct airport-to-hotel transfers and stress-free arrivals.

📱 Best Taxi Booking Apps in Japan

While it's still easy to find taxis at train stations, airports, and busy streets, using a taxi app is often the most convenient option for travelers. You can book a ride in advance, view estimated fares, track your driver, and pay digitally, ALL from your phone📲.

📲 How to Book a Taxi in Japan

Japan Taxi Guide

Method 1: Book a Taxi Using an App

If you're using apps like GO Taxi, S.RIDE, Uber, or DiDi, simply follow these steps:

📲 Step

💡 What to Do

1️⃣ Open the app

Launch your preferred taxi booking app.

2️⃣ Enter your destination

Type in your hotel, attraction, restaurant, or address.

3️⃣ Confirm your pickup location

Use GPS or manually select your location.

4️⃣ Choose your taxi type

Select a standard taxi or other available options.

5️⃣ Check the estimated fare

Review the expected fare and waiting time.

6️⃣ Confirm your booking

Tap "Book" or "Request Ride".

7️⃣ Wait for your driver

Track your taxi in real time through the app.

8️⃣ Enjoy your ride

Arrive at your destination and pay via the app or your chosen payment method.

Method 2: Hail a Taxi on the Street

In busy areas like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, you can simply flag down a taxi from the roadside. Look at the sign displayed in the front windshield:

Hailing Japan Taxi

💡 Sign Status

❓ Meaning

🔴 Red Sign

Taxi is available for hire

❌ Blank / Other Sign

Taxi is occupied or unavailable

When you see an available taxi, raise your hand and wait for it to pull over safely.

Method 3: Use a Taxi Stand

Taxi stands are common throughout Japan and can usually be found at:

  • 🚉 Major train stations
  • ✈️ Airports
  • 🏨 Hotels
  • 🏬 Shopping malls
  • 🎡 Popular tourist attractions

Simply join the queue and wait for the next available taxi. This is often the easiest option if you're carrying luggage.

Taxi Stand

Method 4: Ask Your Hotel to Call One

If you don't have a taxi app or are staying at a hotel, simply ask the front desk staff to arrange a taxi for you. Many hotels can:

  • ✅ Book a taxi immediately
  • ✅ Schedule a pickup for a specific time
  • ✅ Help communicate your destination to the driver

This option is especially useful for airport transfers or early-morning departures.

💰 Japan Taxi Fares Explained

One thing that surprises many first-time visitors is that taxis in Japan are generally more expensive than in many other Asian countries. However, they're also known for being incredibly clean, safe, and reliable, so you're paying for convenience and quality service. The good news is that you don't need to worry about negotiating prices. Japanese taxis use meters, and fares are regulated.

🔍 Charge Type

❓ What It Means

🚕 Initial Fare

A fixed starting fare charged when your journey begins.

📍 Distance Charge

The fare increases gradually as the taxi travels further.

⏱️ Waiting Time Charge

Additional charges apply when the taxi is stuck in traffic or waiting.

🌙 Late-Night Surcharge

Higher fares usually apply during late-night hours.

🛣️ Toll Charges

Expressway and highway tolls are added to your final fare if used.

💵 Typical Taxi Fare Examples

The exact fare varies depending on the city, traffic conditions, and route taken, but here's a rough idea of what travelers can expect:

💡 Journey

💰 Estimated Fare (RM)

Short ride within city centre (1–2 km)

RM15–RM30

10-minute city ride

RM30–RM60

20-minute city ride

RM60–RM120

Tokyo Station → Shinjuku

RM45–RM75

Kyoto Station → Gion

RM30–RM55

City Centre → Airport

RM150–RM450+

💳 How to Pay for Taxis in Japan

Tokyo Taxi Pay

💴 Cash

Cash is still one of the safest payment methods when taking a taxi in Japan. Most taxis accept Japanese yen, and drivers usually carry enough change for smaller notes.

💡 Tip: It's a good idea to keep some Japanese yen with you, especially when taking taxis in smaller cities or rural areas where cashless payment may not always be available.

💳 Credit & Debit Cards

Many taxis in major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto accept international credit cards such as:

  • ✅ Visa
  • ✅ Mastercard
  • ✅ JCB
  • ✅ American Express

Simply let the driver know you want to pay by card before completing the ride. Some older taxis may still be cash-only, so it's better not to rely on cards 100%.

📱 Mobile Payments & IC Cards

Japan has become much more cashless-friendly, and many taxis now accept:

  • ✅ Suica
  • ✅ PASMO
  • ✅ ICOCA
  • ✅ Apple Pay / Google Pay (depending on the service)
  • ✅ Other local mobile payment methods

For travelers using public transport cards like Suica or PASMO, being able to use the same card for taxis can be very convenient.

🚕 In-App Payment

If you book through taxi apps like GO Taxi, S.RIDE, Uber, or DiDi, you can usually pay directly through the app. This is one of the easiest options because:

  • ✅ You don't need to prepare cash
  • ✅ Payment is completed automatically
  • ✅ You can see the fare before or after the ride
  • ✅ No language barrier when paying

💡 Must-Know Tips Before Taking a Taxi in Japan

Japan Taxi

🚪 1. Don’t Open the Taxi Door Yourself

One of the first things that surprises many tourists is that Japanese taxi doors open automatically. When the taxi stops, simply wait for the driver to open the rear door using a remote control. After getting in, the driver will also close the door automatically.

📍 2. Prepare Your Destination Before Getting In

Not all taxi drivers in Japan speak English, especially outside major tourist areas. To make communication easier, prepare your destination in advance:

  • ✅ Show the address on Google Maps
  • ✅ Save the Japanese name of your hotel or attraction
  • ✅ Take a screenshot of your destination

💴 3. Check the Fare Before Long Rides

Japan taxis use meters, so you don't need to negotiate the price. However, longer journeys can become expensive quickly. Before taking a taxi for a long distance, especially to airports or attractions outside the city, it's a good idea to:

  • ✅ Check the estimated fare on a taxi app
  • ✅ Compare the cost with trains or buses
  • ✅ Confirm if highway tolls are included

🚕 4. Queue Properly at Taxi Stands

At busy locations like airports, train stations, and tourist attractions, taxis usually line up at designated taxi stands. Simply join the queue and wait for your turn. Avoid approaching random taxis waiting in line, as they are usually assigned in order.

🙅‍♀️ 5. No Tipping Needed

Unlike some countries, tipping is not part of Japanese taxi culture. Simply pay the exact fare shown on the meter (or the app), collect your belongings, and thank the driver with a polite "Arigatou gozaimasu" (Thank you).

Hotel staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. The bell boy who helped me with bringing my luggages to the room was very friendly and helpful, spoke good English too. Though not all staff spoke good English, they tried their best to assist me. Their service standard is consistent throughout. The room and the toilet was spacious and clean. There were 4 restuarants that I could go to for breakfast. The Garden Lounge which served buffet breakfast has a wide selection of food and drink. Most importantly the food was yummy! I enjoyed looking at the beautiful garden with waterfall view as I was seated by the window during breakfast.

We had a fantastic stay at Mitsui Garden Hotel Ginza. The location is perfect—within walking distance of great shopping, restaurants, public transport, the famous Tsukiji Market, and just a stone's throw from the beautiful Hama-rikyu Gardens, which made our stay even more special as it's where we got engaged. The service was exceptional, with friendly and professional staff who made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Our room was spotless, modern, surprisingly spacious, and offered a beautiful view of the city. Breakfast was excellent, with a wonderful selection of fresh Japanese and Western dishes to start each day. Everything about our stay exceeded our expectations. We would happily stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Tokyo. Everything about our stay exceeded our expectations. The service at the Imperial Hotel is truly exceptional. From the front desk concierge who escorts guests to their rooms and explains the facilities, the staff are incredibly friendly without being overly formal. It perfectly embodies the hospitality and service standards from Japan's economic boom era. Honestly, the photos don't do the hotel justice, and the facilities aren't the newest, but once you stay, you'll find it incredibly comfortable. The provided toiletries are also excellent. The toilet area, designed so you can sit and do your makeup, is a really thoughtful touch – the Imperial Hotel in Osaka has the same feature. It might look unassuming, but it's very thoughtful and provides a comfortable stay. I found the breakfast buffet to be just okay, not as amazing as some reviews suggest, but it's definitely superior to many hotels in the same price range. Personally, I prefer the Japanese set menu; it truly captures the essence of a Japanese breakfast.

The room was incredibly spacious, and the elevators were very efficient. There are plenty of dining options nearby, and it's conveniently located close to both JR and subway lines, making transportation a breeze. The staff were very friendly, and the self-service check-in and check-out made everything super convenient. You can store your luggage after checking out, and there's a bus service to Haneda Airport.

We booked the Tokyo tower side view room. When lying on the bed we are directly facing to the side of the Tokyo tower to enjoy the fantastic tower view. The room is with good size. There is a ventilation feature on the window bay where you can get some fresh air. The bathtub has the bottom massage function which I quite like it. The TV is a bit old and small though. The breakfast we chose is on the top floor where you can enjoy the city view around the hotel. Breakfast options are not too many but definitely enough, the taste is quite good I would say. There are many entertainment options in the hotel, such as public bath and bowling.

Room and bed were very comfortable, immaculately clean and modern. 2 mins walk from train station, if you need lift access to train then a 6 mins walk, we had a stroller. Breakfast was a bit of a zoo, we went during Christmas, very busy! But tables were spacious so even though there were so many people you don’t feel cramped. Good variety of food selection. We had dinner at the Japanese teppanyaki restaurant. Delicious, especially the tuna salad. I found the lobby staff a little lack of personality, at check in, no mentioning of where breakfast will be, what time check out is. Just checked you in and that’s it, no personal notes in the room. When I expressed I’ve lost my phone at the shop in Tokyo, no sign of empathy (it was a western male staff) no gesture of helpfulness, very cold and robotic. This goes for concierge also, he is an older western gentleman, he needs to use Google translate also which is frustrating cause I could do exactly the same research with Google translate. Overall, hardware is solid, need to fine tune the staff, sprinkle a little bit of personality in them.

Getting to the hotel from Shinagawa was super easy, there's a direct bus. Plus, the hotel is really close to the subway station – you can even see the Yurikamome Line platform right from your room. The best part, though, was going to Disney! The hotel has a direct shuttle that takes you right to the park entrance. The soundproofing is terrible; I barely slept because it was so noisy. You can hear every step from upstairs, and I didn't get a good night's sleep for three days. The hotel is quite old. Overall, it's pretty good. The room isn't huge, but there's enough space to open three suitcases comfortably. It's very clean, and they bring fresh pajamas daily. The amenities are comprehensive, including a fridge – though a microwave would have been a nice addition. Both check-in and check-out are semi-self-service, which is very efficient. Thumbs up! The biggest plus is definitely the location; it's super convenient for getting anywhere. It’s only a five to six-minute walk from Ginza Station, and the surrounding shopping area is fantastic for browsing. Plus, there are plenty of convenience stores nearby.

I arrived at 11 PM for check-in, and the hotel is conveniently located right off Ginza's main street. The front desk staff was efficient, and communication in simple English was no problem. They even provided toiletries. As it's a new hotel, there's no need for power adapters; USB and Type-C ports are directly available. The room is very spacious, and the bathroom has a separate wet and dry area. I could easily open up my 28-inch suitcase. Breakfast was also good, with plenty of choices.

This was my third stay, and this hotel truly is a hidden gem among all the hotels in Tokyo. Every morning, I'd wake up and walk to the outer market for breakfast. The hotel service is also excellent. Previously, the bathroom in the same room type was different, so I contacted Trip.com. Trip.com then reached out to the hotel, and a dedicated staff member showed us several room types to understand the situation, and then changed us to a satisfactory room. On each floor, room numbers 20-25 are double rooms. Rooms 20 and 25 have bathrooms like the one shown in picture two, while rooms 21-24 have better bathrooms with separate bathtubs and showers. Also, rooms 21-24 have beds that are actually 1.8m, while rooms 20 and 25 have 1.6m beds, even though all are listed as 1.6m – they are actually different! However, room 20 is the furthest from the elevator, so it depends on personal preference. All in all, I'm very satisfied with this price point in Tokyo.

Considering Tokyo's premium on space, the hotel room was surprisingly spacious. We were able to fully open two 30-inch suitcases with no problem. You can even see the Tokyo Tower right from your room – I'd recommend opting for a higher floor for an even more stunning night view. The hotel service was excellent too; check-in was super quick. Located on the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station, this hotel, though not large, offers exceptionally warm and attentive service. Every staff member I encountered greeted me proactively. I arrived at 2:15 PM, before check-in time, and stored my luggage. After a quick stroll around the area, I returned to find my bags already neatly placed in my room. When I needed more water, the front desk delivered it to my room in an instant. The room itself was very quiet and well-equipped with all necessary amenities. For such a central location, the value for money is outstanding. The view from the window is excellent; during the day, the train tracks are busy with trains coming and going, while at night, the city lights are spectacular. The hotel is at great location (right across the road from the Shinagawa train station) but upon check in. They were so disappointing. First I waited in the self check in for 15 mins but were then told i can’t check in for two rooms there. Then I waited 20 mins in the manual check in queue and then all of the sudden. All receptionists left the reception desk. Waited another 15 mins and 2 complains later. The reception ladies came back out. And then there was the breakfast queues. Every morning we had to wait 20 mins to get into breakfast however this was not their fault, there were so many guests and they did try by opening the second floor and directed people to another location. The breakfast options were increditable. The amenities were great but they were all additional costs. The swimming pool was extra £25 per person to use. And when I looked down from my room. It was empty 😅。 The left luggage queue was also another 30 mins. So in total I wasted a day queueing. But the facilities and location was amazing.

Lovely hotel with in great location. However, not truly a five star hotel. At best it is a four star in my opinion. Lack of explanation of their amenities and what needs to be booked on checking in. Eg Concierge not aware that the jazz club needed to be booked in advance. Not his fault really as he has perhaps never been trained On arrival to the club, we were then literally ushered out to our embarrassment as all other sitting guests observed this as there were three members of staff attempting to use body language as they could not communicate in English nor did they wish to use their phone translate app. Very unlike Japanese people’s calm and kind style. Many areas in cerulean floor requires updating. On reporting the above, we were told that a QR code should have been provided and they forgot.

It was 5:30 PM in Otemachi, Tokyo, and a massive halo, like a holy light, enveloped the area, reflecting the silhouette of the world's most beautiful CBD on the glass facade of Otemachi Tower. Perched atop this magnificent skyscraper, Aman Tokyo, which stunned the world a decade ago, remains an unparalleled benchmark for modern city hotels. |The soaring 30-meter high atrium, crafted with washi lanterns, wood textures, and concrete and rock, creates a 'dry landscape' garden in the urban clouds. |The view facing the Imperial Palace is arguably Tokyo's most beautiful skyline (it ruthlessly trumps the already impressive view from the neighboring Bulgari). |While the ambiance at Arva, the Italian restaurant on the other side of the lobby, is superb, the food wasn't to my taste. I'd recommend the Aman Cafe on the first floor, a glasshouse enveloped by the 'Otemachi Forest' oasis instead.

This was my first time staying at The Peninsula Tokyo, and the experience was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we began corresponding with the hotel before arrival, the team made it clear that this was going to be a special stay. I had reached out in advance as this was an important trip for our family, and the team – especially Ms. Kim – went above and beyond to help organise everything smoothly. Every detail was handled with care, and it really set the tone for our visit. Throughout our stay, every interaction made us feel genuinely welcome. The lobby team, the staff at Peter, and housekeeping were all consistently warm, professional, and attentive. Small gestures, friendly smiles, and a real willingness to help turned a simple hotel stay into a collection of memories we will cherish for a long time. The room was a little small, but with eight suitcases we expected that. The one thing that did make me uncomfortable was the bathroom. The floor didn’t feel stable — it seemed to shift or sit on an angle, which made me feel like I was moving, almost like being in an airplane lavatory. I didn’t feel good standing in there. On the positive side, the location was excellent and close to everything. We were on floor 12, very nice views. Though small, this hotel has everything you need. Its Ginza location is incredibly convenient, perfect for shopping or quickly getting to Narita Airport via the expressway. What truly impressed me is how many features are packed into such a compact space. They have a coin-operated laundry and a large public bath. The room, which I'd estimate at about 20 square meters, even managed to fit bunk beds (1.2m/1.5m), making it very family-friendly. A minor point is that since the hotel is directly above the subway, you occasionally feel vibrations as trains pass. This led to a funny moment when an actual earthquake hit at night, and I initially thought it was just another train going by!

My overall experience with this stay was quite complex, feeling more like a test of service management capabilities. On the first day, the room cleaning quality was noticeably below expectations. The wash area, countertop details, and some amenities weren't clean enough, and the bedding wasn't tidied properly. From a housekeeping management perspective, this felt more like a failure in process execution rather than an isolated incident, and it definitely affected my first impression. However, after I raised the issue, the hotel's recovery actions were prompt. In the following days, the room cleaning was significantly more standardized, with noticeable improvements in detail. This indicates that the hotel is capable of good service, but the initial day's execution standards simply weren't met. In contrast, Trip.com's service experience during this incident left a deeper impression. The customer service proactively followed up, communicated efficiently, and handled the situation professionally. They were able to push for problem resolution from a customer experience perspective, demonstrating a mature platform service system. This level of after-sales responsiveness is quite high among current online travel platforms. Overall Rating: The hotel's hardware and positioning are fine, but there's room for improvement in service consistency, especially regarding the first-day delivery standards of housekeeping management. Trip.com's coordination and service performance in this incident, on the other hand, highlighted the professional value of their platform.

I’d wanted to stay at this hotel for a long time and loved the idea of a traditional-style hotel right in the heart of Tokyo. The staff were very friendly, and I was happy to get a room on a higher floor as I had requested. The room itself was very small and felt a bit outdated. For this price range, I expected a little more. However, the window — definitely the highlight of the room — offered an incredible view of the city. The onsen was quite small, but wow. Being able to relax in an outdoor bath right in the center of Tokyo while looking out at the city was an amazing experience. The breakfast was also very good.

The room was very clean and even had a small sofa. There's a supermarket downstairs, though it closes a bit early. A Lawson convenience store is just a five-minute walk away, and the subway station isn't far either, making it very convenient for getting around. The only downside was that the air conditioner was leaking, right at the end of the building. Since there was a language barrier, I just put a plastic bag under it. Overall, it was still very good.

Haneda Airport/Kamata Tokyo|14.15km dari pusat bandar
The Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Haneda proved to be an excellent choice for my latest trip to Japan. After arriving it was super convenient to just walk over from Terminal 3 and check in. There were some issues retrieving my booking with the terminals but the staff were quick to sort it out. Travelling to and fro was easy too thanks to the airport connections. The room itself was excellent - roomier than many Tokyo hotels, with a great view of the river, and all the expected amenities. The best part was the quietness. Despite being next to the airport I couldn't hear the planes at all or any noise from the hall or adjoining rooms. I stayed in a Japan Airlines themed room which was amusing for an aviation nerd like me. The hotel onsen was also excellent and worth the extra fee. The baths were very relaxing but the advertised view couldn't be appreciated from the windows being fogged up by the steam. That was more than offset though by the excellent restaurant that had great service and delicious food for a very reasonable price. I opted to eat there rather than the very crowded breakfast buffet in the mornings. It was great for dinner too especially after a relaxing bath. One thing I didn't care for was the extra fee for the fitness room, unlike most hotels I've stayed at. There was a free area with just weight machines but if you wanted to use the treadmills there was an additional fee. Regardless of that, I would definitely stay here again without hesitation.

The room is clean and sanitary. I stay here every time I go on a business trip. The location is convenient, the staff has a good service attitude, the scenery is also very good, especially the bedding and toiletries in the store are more comfortable, and the air conditioner is not dry, the temperature is suitable, in short, it is quite comfortable.

The hotel offers an exceptional breakfast selection, featuring high-quality sashimi that is perfect for raw fish lovers. The view is spectacular both day and night, overlooking the new Toyosu Fish Market and the Rainbow Bridge. Additionally, the onsen experience—with both indoor and outdoor baths—is an absolute highlight that you will surely love.

Coming directly from Tokyo Station, you can access the hotel's exclusive elevator via the Marunouchi underground passage, which saves you the hassle of crossing streets above ground. Being on a high floor, the view of Tokyo Station with its busy trains passing by is quite spectacular. The room is small but exquisite, typical of Tokyo style. Breakfast was relatively simple, and at 2500 JPY for a child, it felt a bit overpriced.

This was my second stay here, primarily because of its excellent location. It's a convenient 5-minute walk from the JR station and about 20 minutes to Isetan, making it easy to get anywhere. Plus, there's a direct shuttle bus to the airport that gets you there in just 1.5 hours. I stayed in the South Wing, and the room was a bit dated, but everything else was fine. There's a Komeda right outside, which is great for a high-value breakfast. On the second floor, there's a Family Mart, so it's super convenient for grabbing anything you need. The service is also very good; they provide complimentary water and buckwheat pillows. I highly recommend this as the top choice for Shinjuku, especially for its unbeatable value for money. Last time, there were Chinese-speaking staff at the front desk to help with check-in, but I didn't see any this time.

Every time I visit Tokyo, I stay here because it's so convenient. **Amenities**: They have a microwave, self-service laundry, and a gym (which costs extra to use). **Location**: It's right by Ikebukuro West Exit, making it super easy to get to LUMINE and TOBU. Plus, major lines like the JR Yamanote Line, Marunouchi Line, and Yurakucho Line all converge here, so getting anywhere else is a breeze. **Cleanliness**: Most of the housekeeping staff seemed to be from South Asia. **Service**: The front desk really saved the day this time! I had the wrong time for my return bus, and thankfully, the staff reminded me in time, so I didn't miss it.

Hotel service was impeccable, staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were very clean and well maintained, especially loved the toilet and showers which were spacious with good water pressure. There’s also a free lounge that served simple drinks and small snacks which was much appreciated. Location is also great, within walking distance of the both the JR and metro stations. Shimbashi station is well connected to various lines that you’d use to hit the common attractions, also close enough to Ginza. Highly recommended and would definitely return again for my next trip to Tokyo

The location is decent, situated in Shinjuku, but it’s not exactly in the heart of the busiest areas. If you’re planning to visit restaurants or shopping spots, be prepared for a bit of a walk daily. The lobby is beautiful, and while the onsen and sauna are small, they are quite effective. The rooms are okay, though not very modern. Breakfast was also just average and not particularly impressive, given the price.

Staying at this luxury hotel, nestled within a historic building at Tokyo Station, was an absolute delight. Both the facilities and services were outstanding. The shower and faucet in the room felt incredibly luxurious – a truly 'premium' experience. The hotel's long guest room corridors, with their wall sconces, created a wonderfully warm and inviting sense of depth. A major highlight was the hotel's breakfast and its setting. Served on the 4th floor, the breakfast offered a rich and diverse selection. The peaked, herringbone-patterned ceiling, with one side a wooden roof and the other a light-transmitting glass roof equipped with awnings, filled the space with bright, natural light, making for a truly comfortable start to the day.

I booked a standard room below the 20th floor and requested a higher floor with a view of the Statue of Liberty. When I checked in, I spoke to the front desk, and they told me that for the price I paid, I'd only get a tiny glimpse of the Statue of Liberty, even on the 18th floor. To get a direct view from a higher floor (20+), I'd have to pay extra. I decided to take a gamble and stick with my original booking, and it turned out great! The money I saved was enough to cover breakfast at the hotel every day, which was a nice bonus. There are three breakfast options: the garden restaurant on the first floor, the café on the second floor, and a sushi set on the 30th floor. The first and second-floor menus are identical, but the first floor is larger. I tried the sushi once on the 30th floor, but it was just okay; the fish slices were quite thin, and I could get better sushi for the same price at other places. There are several shopping malls nearby, all accessible directly from the hotel lobby (on the second floor) via connecting skywalks. You can also directly access the Yurikamome subway line. The terminal station is Shimbashi, which is about a 20-30 minute ride from the hotel. From Shimbashi, it's about a 1km walk to Ginza, or one stop on the Ginza subway line, or a 700 yen taxi ride. The transportation is very convenient. I also participated in a Tokyo Bay cruise afternoon tea activity nearby; it was just a three-stop train ride from the hotel to Hinode Station, and the Symphony cruise ship pier was right outside the station.

This hotel is super convenient, just a 5-6 minute walk from Roppongi Subway Exit 5, and you get to enjoy the twinkling Tokyo Tower lights on the way. My 5th-floor room offered street views and a glimpse of the Tokyo Tower, and it was really clean and quiet. I chose the twin bed option, and while the beds aren't small, they are placed right next to each other. The shower and bathtub get a big thumbs up – very well designed! The room isn't huge, but considering it's Roppongi in Tokyo, it's totally acceptable. The hotel breakfast was delicious, and the staff were very nice. The lobby also has good quality toiletries available, which you can pick up as needed. Shoutout to the nearby Taketora Ramen – fantastic! There's also a Don Quijote for some affordable shopping. Overall, I was very happy with my stay.

The hotel's location is great, quite close to the subway station, and it's convenient to walk to Ginza. In my opinion, the one major drawback is that the staff's English proficiency is absolutely terrible! On both occasions I've stayed here, the front desk staff could barely speak English during check-in, requiring a translation device, which wasted a lot of time and effort. Even more ridiculous, when I called from my room to request an extra pillow, the staff member who answered couldn't understand English. We repeated the English word for ”pillow” at least ten times, and even spelled out the letters one by one, but it was still useless – we simply couldn't communicate. Overall, the hotel has a good location and the rooms are generally decent, but the English level of the staff is genuinely the worst I've encountered in any Japanese hotel.

The hotel is conveniently located right next to the shuttle bus stop for both Haneda and Narita airports. If you head left out of the hotel, there's a great spot on a bridge to photograph the Tokyo Skytree, and to the right, you'll find the famous Ningyo-yaki shop and lots of delicious restaurants. The Suitengu-mae subway station is directly accessible from the hotel's basement (B1), which is incredibly convenient.

Overall, my experience was okay, but the deposit process was a real hassle, and communication with the front desk was difficult. I tried to pay the deposit online twice, and both times it showed as 'Locked by Shangri-La Tokyo' for JPY 250,000 + JPY 100,000. The hotel responded that their finance team checked and found a system error, so they hadn't received the deposit. Finally, they sent me a new link, and I paid another JPY 100,000, which also showed as 'Locked by Shangri-La Tokyo.' This time, they claimed it was successful. Thank goodness! But even now, the deposit is still being held by the hotel. During my stay, I showed the front desk the emails I had exchanged with their reservations department, but the front desk said they hadn't received them! Even though the reservations system automatically replied to my emails, the front desk still denied receiving them! I also showed them a screenshot of the successful deposit payment, but the front desk said they needed to verify it in their system and wouldn't accept my screenshot. Fine, they said they would confirm the deposit payment in an hour, but we only found out it was received the next day. It was absolutely ridiculous! Unless absolutely necessary, I won't be going to Japan again! And even staying at a Shangri-La wasn't all that great! It was a lot of trouble, and I felt like they intentionally dragged their feet! BTW, all emails with the hotel were in English.

I come to Tokyo several times a year, staying a fortnight or more each time. This time I spent seven nights at The Capitol Hotel Tokyu. The room faced Hie Shrine. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows I could see the shrine's copper roof and half of Tokyo's skyline. The décor was modern without excess; the layout flowed easily, Bose speakers hidden in the walls, another set in the bathroom ceiling, connected by a 3.5mm jack. The curtains were motorized, though you hardly needed to close them. The turndown service. I would leave in the evening and return late to find the room changed: only the hallway light and bedside lamp left on, a bottle of water and a glass on the nightstand, two chocolates beside them. The evening tea and teacup, previously stored in the cabinet, had been moved next to the coffee machine. These changes were so slight you had to think back carefully to confirm they had happened at all. The temperature and humidity had been adjusted. As if the room itself remembered your habits. Room service fell short of the ryokan in Hakone or Lake Toya, but well above the ordinary hotel. Each day I made two or three cups of complimentary coffee, played music, read, wrote. In seven days I finished three books. The research ahead began to take shape. There were drawbacks. No washing machine, but a decent laundromat ten minutes' walk away—a chance to wander the streets of Akasaka. The room provided HDMI and ethernet ports but no cables; for those who came to rest, perhaps a mercy. The minibar fridge was mostly occupied by drinks for purchase, same as the Imperial, though there was still room for my sparkling water. The day I left it was half past five and fully dark. I could barely make out the faces of the bellhop and the taxi driver. Together they loaded my luggage into the boot. I wished the bellhop a happy new year in Japanese and told her I liked her hat. She smiled and returned the greeting. As the taxi pulled out of the underground drive, I thought of the inns Kawabata once wrote about: what had to be sought in the mountains of snow country can now be reached by elevator from the B2 exit of a metro station. I have watched the Shinagawa Prince Hotel loosen quietly over time, slip a little. That kind of decline is rarely one great error. It begins the day someone forgets to leave a glass of water, neglects to move a packet of tea, omits a newspaper. As for The Capitol Hotel Tokyu: in Japanese, what I experienced over these seven days is called ちょうどいい.

Facilities: I'm not sure if the cabinets were renovated, but the edges are incredibly sharp. It really doesn't fit the Japanese emphasis on detail. I actually cut my arm. Ambiance: The lobby is beautiful, and the transportation is very convenient. There are shuttle buses right outside the hotel that go to the city center and the airport. Service: The front desk staff were nice, but when we tried to book a restaurant, they asked a bunch of questions about allergies. Only after all those questions did they call the restaurant, only to tell us there were no tables available. Couldn't they have checked availability first and skipped all the allergy questions? It was a huge waste of time. Cleanliness: Unfortunately, the room cleaning wasn't very thorough. Every time we came back, the trash on the floor was still there. In the mornings, they kept ringing the doorbell before we were even awake. The sheets weren't changed when they were dirty, and when a pillow fell on the floor, they just picked it up and put it back on the bed, still covered in dust from the floor. This really doesn't live up to five-star standards.

Mandarin Oriental once again gave me an unforgettable day. I've celebrated many birthdays at Mandarin Oriental before, and this time was no exception. The Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, was absolutely perfect. While the facilities are luxurious, they might not be considered top-tier luxury. The main perfection truly lies in the service. Michelle, the beautiful front desk staff from Indonesia, was incredibly thoughtful. On my birthday, the hotel provided several delightful surprises, further solidifying my belief that coming here to celebrate my birthday was the absolute right choice. Looking for delicious food? Mandarin Oriental offers classic French cuisine, the best pizza, and excellent sushi... And if that's not enough, downstairs you'll find the best fruits in Japan, the finest Spanish cuisine, and top-notch Chinese food. Right next to the hotel is the Mitsukoshi Main Store, so choosing a birthday gift was absolutely stress-free. The upgraded room was spacious, the internet was good, the facilities were excellent, the lighting design was well-thought-out, and the hot water in the bathroom was fantastic. Let's start with the positives: The location and facilities are excellent, the room is spacious, and I even had a view of the Imperial Palace from my window. Although it was partially obstructed, considering I booked a basic room, it was more than acceptable. Upon arrival, the staff immediately helped with my luggage and inquired about my name, which was very thoughtful. Turndown service and replenishment of amenities in the evening were prompt. All staff members throughout the hotel were professional and responsive. Now for the negatives: I wouldn't call it discrimination, but it's clear the hotel primarily caters to and prioritizes Western guests (there were many Westerners staying there). They even offer gluten-free bread at breakfast. I was assigned a room on the lowest floor, the 8th floor, and I didn't see any Western guests on my floor. When using the elevators, they were always going to floors 10 and above. Additionally, a cart with spare amenities was constantly parked right outside my room door, which was quite an eyesore every time I opened it. I brought this up during check-out, but I doubt they'll take it seriously.

Pros: the duty manager Mai who is fluent in English and demonstrated outstanding attentiveness and a genuine dedication to hospitality. She took the time to truly understand my specific needs and thoughtfully arranged the perfect room for me. To be quite honest, this level of personalized care and attention to detail is something rarely encountered in the hospitality industry nowadays. I was both deeply impressed and delightfully surprised by this experience. Cons: regarding the housekeeping service during my stay, While I appreciate that the bedsheets were changed diligently, the overall cleanliness and attention to detail have been highly disappointing. Instead of clearing the room, the housekeeper consistently left trash behind after cleaning. Day1 The housekeeper actually stuffed a piece of paper waste into the room card slot. Day 2 The trash remained unclean. Day 3 The housekeeper even left their own dirty cleaning towel right next to the bathroom sink. (see the picture) As a guest, I expected a high standard of hygiene and professionalism, but these incidents have made my stay quite uncomfortable.
