Whether you're arriving at the airport with heavy luggage, traveling late at night after the last train, or simply looking for a more comfortable way to get around, taking a taxi can save both time and energy⚡.

What I love most about taxis in Japan is how clean, safe, and reliable they are. The service is excellent, the doors open automatically, and many drivers will even help with your luggage. Plus, with modern taxi apps, booking a ride is now easier than ever. In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about taking taxis in Japan, including the different taxi types, best taxi booking apps, fare rates, payment methods, and useful tips for a smooth journey.

🚖 Different Types of Taxis in Japan

Japan Taxi

If it's your first time taking a taxi in Japan, you might notice that taxis come in different shapes, sizes, and service levels. Unlike some countries, Japan doesn't have a standard taxi color, so don't be surprised if you see black, white, silver, or even colorful taxis on the road.

Japan Taxi

The easiest way to identify a legitimate taxi is to look for the illuminated roof sign and a green license plate (or a black plate with yellow characters for certain commercial vehicles). If you see a regular white private car without these features, don't assume it's a taxi.

Here are the main types of taxis you'll find in Japan:

🚕 Standard Taxi

This is the most common type of taxi and the one most tourists will use. You'll find them everywhere, from airports and train stations to busy city streets. Standard taxis are comfortable, clean, and suitable for 1–4 passengers.

💡 Best for: Everyday travel, sightseeing, and short-distance trips.

🚖 JPN Taxi (Universal Design Taxi)

The JPN Taxi is Japan's newer taxi model designed to be more accessible and spacious. It features a higher roof, sliding doors, and extra luggage space, making it popular with tourists carrying large suitcases.

💡 Best for: Airport transfers, families, and travelers with luggage.

🚐 Jumbo Taxi

Traveling with a group? A Jumbo Taxi can accommodate more passengers than a standard taxi, usually up to 6–9 people depending on the vehicle.

💡 Best for: Families, friend groups, and travelers with multiple suitcases.

Premium or Luxury Taxi

Some taxi companies offer higher-end vehicles with premium services, larger seats, and experienced drivers. These are commonly found in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka.

💡 Best for: Business travelers, special occasions, and those looking for extra comfort.

✈️ Airport Taxi

Many taxi companies offer dedicated airport transfer services that can be booked in advance through an app or online. While generally more expensive than public transport, they're incredibly convenient if you're arriving with heavy luggage or landing late at night.

💡 Best for: Direct airport-to-hotel transfers and stress-free arrivals.

📲 How to Book a Taxi in Japan

Japan Taxi Guide

Method 1: Book a Taxi Using an App

If you're using apps like GO Taxi, S.RIDE, Uber, or DiDi, simply follow these steps:

📲 Step

💡 What to Do

1️⃣ Open the app

Launch your preferred taxi booking app.

2️⃣ Enter your destination

Type in your hotel, attraction, restaurant, or address.

3️⃣ Confirm your pickup location

Use GPS or manually select your location.

4️⃣ Choose your taxi type

Select a standard taxi or other available options.

5️⃣ Check the estimated fare

Review the expected fare and waiting time.

6️⃣ Confirm your booking

Tap "Book" or "Request Ride".

7️⃣ Wait for your driver

Track your taxi in real time through the app.

8️⃣ Enjoy your ride

Arrive at your destination and pay via the app or your chosen payment method.

Method 2: Hail a Taxi on the Street

In busy areas like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, you can simply flag down a taxi from the roadside. Look at the sign displayed in the front windshield:

Hailing Japan Taxi

💡 Sign Status

❓ Meaning

🔴 Red Sign

Taxi is available for hire

❌ Blank / Other Sign

Taxi is occupied or unavailable

When you see an available taxi, raise your hand and wait for it to pull over safely.

Method 3: Use a Taxi Stand

Taxi stands are common throughout Japan and can usually be found at:

  • 🚉 Major train stations
  • ✈️ Airports
  • 🏨 Hotels
  • 🏬 Shopping malls
  • 🎡 Popular tourist attractions

Simply join the queue and wait for the next available taxi. This is often the easiest option if you're carrying luggage.

Taxi Stand

Method 4: Ask Your Hotel to Call One

If you don't have a taxi app or are staying at a hotel, simply ask the front desk staff to arrange a taxi for you. Many hotels can:

  • ✅ Book a taxi immediately
  • ✅ Schedule a pickup for a specific time
  • ✅ Help communicate your destination to the driver

This option is especially useful for airport transfers or early-morning departures.

💰 Japan Taxi Fares Explained

One thing that surprises many first-time visitors is that taxis in Japan are generally more expensive than in many other Asian countries. However, they're also known for being incredibly clean, safe, and reliable, so you're paying for convenience and quality service. The good news is that you don't need to worry about negotiating prices. Japanese taxis use meters, and fares are regulated.

🔍 Charge Type

❓ What It Means

🚕 Initial Fare

A fixed starting fare charged when your journey begins.

📍 Distance Charge

The fare increases gradually as the taxi travels further.

⏱️ Waiting Time Charge

Additional charges apply when the taxi is stuck in traffic or waiting.

🌙 Late-Night Surcharge

Higher fares usually apply during late-night hours.

🛣️ Toll Charges

Expressway and highway tolls are added to your final fare if used.

💵 Typical Taxi Fare Examples

The exact fare varies depending on the city, traffic conditions, and route taken, but here's a rough idea of what travelers can expect:

💡 Journey

💰 Estimated Fare (RM)

Short ride within city centre (1–2 km)

RM15–RM30

10-minute city ride

RM30–RM60

20-minute city ride

RM60–RM120

Tokyo Station → Shinjuku

RM45–RM75

Kyoto Station → Gion

RM30–RM55

City Centre → Airport

RM150–RM450+

💳 How to Pay for Taxis in Japan

Tokyo Taxi Pay

💴 Cash

Cash is still one of the safest payment methods when taking a taxi in Japan. Most taxis accept Japanese yen, and drivers usually carry enough change for smaller notes.

💡 Tip: It's a good idea to keep some Japanese yen with you, especially when taking taxis in smaller cities or rural areas where cashless payment may not always be available.

💳 Credit & Debit Cards

Many taxis in major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto accept international credit cards such as:

  • ✅ Visa
  • ✅ Mastercard
  • ✅ JCB
  • ✅ American Express

Simply let the driver know you want to pay by card before completing the ride. Some older taxis may still be cash-only, so it's better not to rely on cards 100%.

📱 Mobile Payments & IC Cards

Japan has become much more cashless-friendly, and many taxis now accept:

  • ✅ Suica
  • ✅ PASMO
  • ✅ ICOCA
  • ✅ Apple Pay / Google Pay (depending on the service)
  • ✅ Other local mobile payment methods

For travelers using public transport cards like Suica or PASMO, being able to use the same card for taxis can be very convenient.

🚕 In-App Payment

If you book through taxi apps like GO Taxi, S.RIDE, Uber, or DiDi, you can usually pay directly through the app. This is one of the easiest options because:

  • ✅ You don't need to prepare cash
  • ✅ Payment is completed automatically
  • ✅ You can see the fare before or after the ride
  • ✅ No language barrier when paying

💡 Must-Know Tips Before Taking a Taxi in Japan

Japan Taxi

🚪 1. Don’t Open the Taxi Door Yourself

One of the first things that surprises many tourists is that Japanese taxi doors open automatically. When the taxi stops, simply wait for the driver to open the rear door using a remote control. After getting in, the driver will also close the door automatically.

📍 2. Prepare Your Destination Before Getting In

Not all taxi drivers in Japan speak English, especially outside major tourist areas. To make communication easier, prepare your destination in advance:

  • ✅ Show the address on Google Maps
  • ✅ Save the Japanese name of your hotel or attraction
  • ✅ Take a screenshot of your destination

💴 3. Check the Fare Before Long Rides

Japan taxis use meters, so you don't need to negotiate the price. However, longer journeys can become expensive quickly. Before taking a taxi for a long distance, especially to airports or attractions outside the city, it's a good idea to:

  • ✅ Check the estimated fare on a taxi app
  • ✅ Compare the cost with trains or buses
  • ✅ Confirm if highway tolls are included

🚕 4. Queue Properly at Taxi Stands

At busy locations like airports, train stations, and tourist attractions, taxis usually line up at designated taxi stands. Simply join the queue and wait for your turn. Avoid approaching random taxis waiting in line, as they are usually assigned in order.

🙅‍♀️ 5. No Tipping Needed

Unlike some countries, tipping is not part of Japanese taxi culture. Simply pay the exact fare shown on the meter (or the app), collect your belongings, and thank the driver with a polite "Arigatou gozaimasu" (Thank you).

Beyond being a bit of a walk from the subway, everything else was impeccable. The room was spacious, and the corner glass windows offered great views. The tower building was affordable, unlike the main building which was out of my price range. The garden was expansive, though the cherry blossoms weren't in full bloom yet, so there weren't many flowers. The lower floors are all shopping malls; you can spend a lot of time just wandering around the hotel, from the tower to the main building. It's a great way to pass the time.

Location of the hotel is excellent and is within close proximity to major establishments/shopping areas in the Ginza area. There is a convenient store (”Natural Lawson”) on the ground floor of the building. I booked the Standard Room with Queen Bed as I was worried that the Standard Room with Single Bed would be too cramped. I'm glad I made that decision. At about 20sq.m., the room is spacious and comfortable enough for one person but may be slightly cramped for a couple. Then again, hotel rooms in Japan tend to be small in general. Everything was clean and well maintained, and the amenities were sufficient. The lobby of the hotel is located on the 16/F of the building, and the guestrooms are located from 17/F up, so you get a very nice view of the Ginza area. I didn't try the breakfast on this trip, but I've heard nice things about that. Will definitely try that next time. Recommended.

We enjoy staying in the Imperial Hotel for number of reasons. Convenient location in Ginza, easy to get taxi from the hotel. The hotel staffs are helpful and efficient. The check-in process is smooth and the luggages delivered to our room very quickly. The room is spacious as we are staying in Junior Suite. I love their shower with strong water pressure. Regarding buffet breakfast, they have a great choice of food. Two of the mornings we need to queue to get table for buffet breakfast, but the 3rd morning there was no waiting at all, so it depends which days you visit Japan to avoid the crowd. Overall, I will stay in Imperial again.

When I booked online for the room, I stated very clearly no corner room, but when I discovered my room is nearly at the end, was a bit not happy. The location is 7 mins walk to suidoboshi station. But it's not very near to places like shibuya or Tokyo, a bit disappointed the single room is a bit small, but the milk lotion, liquid cleanser, face wash packet they provided is gd. A bit surprised they don't provide spoon but stirrer. The room is clean, and there is lawson at 2nd floor and laundry service at 7th level. I have taken video of the room but can't attach here, wasted. Near the suidoboshi station are some eateries. They provide one water bottle daily and clean the room daily which is good. If you preferred a clean room, this hotel is apt for u. The hotel provided airport limousine bus to airport but not vice versa

Our family trip to Tokyo was made much easier by this hotel—it was an excellent choice for us. They offer adjoining rooms and sofa beds, which gave us plenty of space and flexibility. The location is another big plus: set within a family-friendly park, it’s just a short walk to Tokyo Tower, great restaurants, and nearby subway stations. One thing to keep in mind: the elevators are split—floors 1–18 and 19–32 are served separately, and access to floors 18–32 requires a key card. So if you’re booking multiple room types, just double-check which floors they’re on to avoid any confusion.

Room and bed were very comfortable, immaculately clean and modern. 2 mins walk from train station, if you need lift access to train then a 6 mins walk, we had a stroller. Breakfast was a bit of a zoo, we went during Christmas, very busy! But tables were spacious so even though there were so many people you don’t feel cramped. Good variety of food selection. We had dinner at the Japanese teppanyaki restaurant. Delicious, especially the tuna salad. I found the lobby staff a little lack of personality, at check in, no mentioning of where breakfast will be, what time check out is. Just checked you in and that’s it, no personal notes in the room. When I expressed I’ve lost my phone at the shop in Tokyo, no sign of empathy (it was a western male staff) no gesture of helpfulness, very cold and robotic. This goes for concierge also, he is an older western gentleman, he needs to use Google translate also which is frustrating cause I could do exactly the same research with Google translate. Overall, hardware is solid, need to fine tune the staff, sprinkle a little bit of personality in them.

We traveled to Nagano Prefecture for 2 days from Tokyo and returned to stay at the Conrad again. This time, we switched to a bay view suite. The room was still spacious, and having two bathrooms was very convenient. The view remained impeccable, and the housekeeping staff did a thorough and clean job. We needed packing tape, and they delivered two large rolls, which was a very thoughtful touch ❤️. The documents we needed printed were also handled very well. We have a small suggestion: could the bathtub be replaced with a deeper model? The current one is too shallow, and taller people can't fully enjoy it.

Overall, I'd give it 4 stars, mainly for the location and the night view, though the hotel's facilities are a bit dated. 🚃 Transportation (very convenient) Take the Yurikamome Line to Daiba Station, and it's a 3-5 minute walk to the hotel. You even get sea views along the way. Downstairs, there's an Airport Limousine bus that goes directly to Haneda and Narita airports, which is super convenient when you're traveling with luggage. 📍 Location & Surroundings This deserves high praise – it's right in the heart of Odaiba. You can walk to Fuji TV, Joypolis (Sega Amusements), and the Gundam statue at DiverCity. Aqua City is right downstairs, so dining and shopping are a breeze. It’s perfect for families with kids or young travelers. 🌉 Night View (highly recommended) I booked a room on the Rainbow Bridge side, and the night view of Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay was truly amazing. Just sitting by the window and zoning out made it worth every penny. 🍳 Breakfast (average) The buffet offers a mix of Japanese and Western options, but nothing particularly memorable. The taste was just okay, and I felt it wasn't great value for money. 🏨 Facilities & Room (gripes) The decor is a bit old-fashioned. My biggest complaint is the hairdryer in the room – it's so old and weak; drying long hair was a real struggle. I hope the hotel replaces it soon. Other facilities were acceptable.

I arrived at 11 PM for check-in, and the hotel is conveniently located right off Ginza's main street. The front desk staff was efficient, and communication in simple English was no problem. They even provided toiletries. As it's a new hotel, there's no need for power adapters; USB and Type-C ports are directly available. This was our second stay here, and it's super close to Tsukiji subway station – just turn the corner after exiting via 3a. Getting around is really convenient. The room was clean and tidy, and downstairs they provide daily cleaning supplies, including makeup remover, which was a thoughtful touch! There’s a small supermarket right near the hotel, making it easy to pick up daily essentials. It's only a 15-minute walk straight to Ginza. For Akihabara, it's just 5 stops directly on the Hibiya Line. Perfect for us anime fans!

First of all, location here is amazing. Walking distance to Age3, Cloud Matcha, Tonkatsu, Udon, a super nice ramen shop opposite of the hotel. The food scene at surrounding this hotel is amazing. If you’re not into eating in restaurants, walk a few mins more to Matsuya or Mitsukochi Dept store, go to their B1 B2 and get the food there and head back to hotel to eat. Food will still be warm! Room is small, but the spaces are sufficient to open up luggages, and still move around. I would say the hotel set up the spaces amazingly, where you can put your items near the entrance instead of concentrated on the bed area, which I think it seriously helps a lot when you want to leave certain things that you doesn’t need for a few days there. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel for its location, value to price, and also amazing staff services. Thank you!

Located on the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station, this hotel, though not large, offers exceptionally warm and attentive service. Every staff member I encountered greeted me proactively. I arrived at 2:15 PM, before check-in time, and stored my luggage. After a quick stroll around the area, I returned to find my bags already neatly placed in my room. When I needed more water, the front desk delivered it to my room in an instant. The room itself was very quiet and well-equipped with all necessary amenities. For such a central location, the value for money is outstanding. This was my first time staying at The Peninsula Tokyo, and the experience was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we began corresponding with the hotel before arrival, the team made it clear that this was going to be a special stay. I had reached out in advance as this was an important trip for our family, and the team – especially Ms. Kim – went above and beyond to help organise everything smoothly. Every detail was handled with care, and it really set the tone for our visit. Throughout our stay, every interaction made us feel genuinely welcome. The lobby team, the staff at Peter, and housekeeping were all consistently warm, professional, and attentive. Small gestures, friendly smiles, and a real willingness to help turned a simple hotel stay into a collection of memories we will cherish for a long time. Though small, this hotel has everything you need. Its Ginza location is incredibly convenient, perfect for shopping or quickly getting to Narita Airport via the expressway. What truly impressed me is how many features are packed into such a compact space. They have a coin-operated laundry and a large public bath. The room, which I'd estimate at about 20 square meters, even managed to fit bunk beds (1.2m/1.5m), making it very family-friendly. A minor point is that since the hotel is directly above the subway, you occasionally feel vibrations as trains pass. This led to a funny moment when an actual earthquake hit at night, and I initially thought it was just another train going by!

My overall experience with this stay was quite complex, feeling more like a test of service management capabilities. On the first day, the room cleaning quality was noticeably below expectations. The wash area, countertop details, and some amenities weren't clean enough, and the bedding wasn't tidied properly. From a housekeeping management perspective, this felt more like a failure in process execution rather than an isolated incident, and it definitely affected my first impression. However, after I raised the issue, the hotel's recovery actions were prompt. In the following days, the room cleaning was significantly more standardized, with noticeable improvements in detail. This indicates that the hotel is capable of good service, but the initial day's execution standards simply weren't met. In contrast, Trip.com's service experience during this incident left a deeper impression. The customer service proactively followed up, communicated efficiently, and handled the situation professionally. They were able to push for problem resolution from a customer experience perspective, demonstrating a mature platform service system. This level of after-sales responsiveness is quite high among current online travel platforms. Overall Rating: The hotel's hardware and positioning are fine, but there's room for improvement in service consistency, especially regarding the first-day delivery standards of housekeeping management. Trip.com's coordination and service performance in this incident, on the other hand, highlighted the professional value of their platform.

I’d wanted to stay at this hotel for a long time and loved the idea of a traditional-style hotel right in the heart of Tokyo. The staff were very friendly, and I was happy to get a room on a higher floor as I had requested. The room itself was very small and felt a bit outdated. For this price range, I expected a little more. However, the window — definitely the highlight of the room — offered an incredible view of the city. The onsen was quite small, but wow. Being able to relax in an outdoor bath right in the center of Tokyo while looking out at the city was an amazing experience. The breakfast was also very good.

It was a small but lovely hotel. You take your shoes off at the beginning and walk without shoes. At night they have free ramen which was delicious and their morning breakfast was crazy good. The hotel is a little older but it was clean. And all the amenities and it’s location make this place so worth it.

Fantastic, definitely a four-star hotel. The lobby feels like a five-star, and the rooms are very new and spacious. The bathtub was super comfortable, I used it every night. The only downside is it's a bit far from the city center, but I would still choose to stay here again on my next trip to Tokyo. The value for money exceeded my expectations!

Excellent for early morning flights! Super convenient! The subway takes you directly to Haneda Airport T3. Go up to the 2nd floor for arrivals, then to the 4th floor for self-check-in at the hotel's machines! There are complimentary skincare products available in the elevator lobby. The room isn't small. You can browse shops before security, though most restaurants close at 10 PM. There's a 24-hour convenience store. Don Quijote is on the 5th floor; it's smaller than the city ones but still nice to have, and it closes at 11 PM. For an 8:55 AM ANA flight, the food shops open at 6:30 AM, so you can grab common foods – plenty of time.

Great Stay with Excellent Amenities, Just a Bit Far Out I recently stayed at this hotel and had a wonderful experience overall. The cleanliness was impeccable; the room was spotless and well-maintained throughout my stay. I was also highly impressed by the excellent facilities, which provided everything I needed for a comfortable and relaxing trip. Additionally, the staff offered outstanding service—they were incredibly friendly, helpful, and attentive to every detail. The only downside is the location. It is a bit far from the main attractions, meaning you will need to factor in extra travel time to get around. However, if you don't mind the commute, the fantastic service and comfort make it well worth the stay!

The hotel isn't right next to a subway station, but the shuttle bus service is super convenient, running every 15 minutes to and from Meguro Station. It pretty much covers all your transportation needs. It wasn't until after we checked out that we realized they'd upgraded our room type! It was definitely bigger, and we could easily spread out three 28-inch suitcases, which was really handy. The only downside was that the facilities felt a bit old. Even though it had been renovated, there was still an unpleasant smell from the sink drain in the bathroom.

Coming directly from Tokyo Station, you can access the hotel's exclusive elevator via the Marunouchi underground passage, which saves you the hassle of crossing streets above ground. Being on a high floor, the view of Tokyo Station with its busy trains passing by is quite spectacular. The room is small but exquisite, typical of Tokyo style. Breakfast was relatively simple, and at 2500 JPY for a child, it felt a bit overpriced.

The newly renovated rooms come with multiple USB charging ports and modern amenities. High-floor rooms offer stunning views, perfect for overlooking Shinjuku's city nightscape in the evening. Welcoming service at Front Office / Reception. I feel great to return back. I have stayed in this hotel for so many times and it’s always my top list to stay when i visit Tokyo. It’s my first time to have breakfast in Its Coffee Shop. The egg station is excellent and the chef handles the egg orders one by one with his patience. For the service side, I think the service team need to pay more attention as we stack our plates for a long time and the waiters didn’t “see” them even passed by quite few times. For the hotel room, I feel comfortable and clean.

There’s also a free lounge that served simple drinks and small snacks which was much appreciated. Location is also great, within walking distance of the both the JR and metro stations. The location is decent, situated in Shinjuku, but it’s not exactly in the heart of the busiest areas. If you’re planning to visit restaurants or shopping spots, be prepared for a bit of a walk daily. The lobby is beautiful, and while the onsen and sauna are small, they are quite effective. The rooms are okay, though not very modern. Breakfast was also just average and not particularly impressive, given the price.

I visited Tokyo with my 88-year-old father. The hotel’s location is arguably the absolute best, making it incredibly convenient to visit Tokyo’s major attractions. The hotel facilities were also highly satisfying. First and foremost, the amenities in the guest room were excellent, and the thoughtful accessibility considerations for the elderly or infirm gave us great peace of mind. For instance, the provision of a bath chair with a backrest was very impressive. The hygiene and meticulous housekeeping were of the highest standard. Furthermore, the non-slip mat provided in the bathroom clearly reflected a deep consideration for the guests' specific needs. All of this, of course, is a testament to the staff’s proactive service and attentive care. If there was one minor disappointment, I wish a wider variety of pillows had been available in the room. In this regard, I felt it fell slightly short of meeting guests' diverse preferences. Additionally, as a helpful suggestion for safety, designing bathroom doors to open outward to facilitate emergency access in case of an accident inside is a fundamental design principle for luxury hotels. While preventing accidents altogether is ideal, being fully prepared for emergencies is what sets the highest standard of excellence. On another note, despite the hotel being located within a major railway station, there was absolutely no noise. The soundproofing was truly remarkable. The breakfast offered a rich and diverse selection, beautifully balancing traditional Japanese cuisine with Western options. While ordering a more unique or specialized beverage took a bit of time, the quality and taste were highly satisfying. The other facilities, particularly the restaurants and cafes, were exceptionally calm, elegant, and quiet, providing a very pleasant experience. The food, of course, tasted excellent. However, you must ensure you have ample time to enjoy it; it can require a significant amount of time and patience before the food is served in front of you. Overall, our experience was exceptionally satisfying and wonderful. With its rich historical background and narrative, the hotel offered a deeply engaging and far from boring stay.

The Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba is clean, comfortable, and offers exceptional value. Firstly, the spacious 33-square-meter Grand Floor Superior Twin room felt quite luxurious for Japan. From the bedding to the room layout, everything was exquisite. Toiletries, mineral water, coffee, and tea bags were all provided. The lighting was bright, and the floor-to-ceiling windows offered stunning views of Tokyo Bay. Secondly, the breakfast was abundant. The first and second floors offer buffet-style options (American and Japanese cuisine), while the 30th floor serves a sushi set meal. You can choose any of them; the dining areas are spacious, and the food is delicious and high-quality. Thirdly, Odaiba itself is worth exploring. Odaiba Marine Park and Fuji TV are within walking distance. A promenade directly connects the hotel to two large shopping malls, making shopping and dining very convenient. Fourthly, Odaiba Station is just a two-minute walk from the hotel. It's only about a 30-minute subway ride to Ginza. You can transfer to various subway lines at Shimbashi. Haneda Airport is particularly convenient, just 10 kilometers away. Fifthly, the service was meticulous and thoughtful. The front desk staff were warm and enthusiastic, and our luggage was delivered to our room. They even provided an electronic luggage scale. One minor drawback is that the hotel's pool is outdoors and can only be enjoyed in the height of summer. Also, there aren't any unique Japanese convenience stores nearby. The only regret is that as a JAL Hotels member, I didn't seem to receive any special benefits.

Stayed for four nights and was very satisfied. The front desk staff spoke good English and were friendly. The room wasn't small for Tokyo, and the booth seating was very convenient. They provided various skincare products and mineral water, which were replenished daily. On the 14th floor, there's a tea break area with free cookies and drinks, and also a spa, though the prices are quite expensive compared to back home. The room had a fridge, safe, and iron, and the view was excellent. I heard some rooms even have a view of Tokyo Tower. The breakfast had a wide variety. If 100 is a perfect score, this hotel has its pros and cons. The convenient location and room size both deserve a 90. The shower water pressure and the service from most of the staff are at least an 80. However, you can clearly hear the subway from the room, and even with the small window handle adjusted up or down, the noise persists. During my two-night stay, one night I couldn't fall asleep until the subway stopped running in the middle of the night. The next morning, I was woken up by the noise around 7 AM. I groggily recorded a video, but my phone's microphone near the bed didn't capture it well. The actual sound is about one to two times louder than what's in the video. The room also didn't provide earplugs, which is quite unbearable – I'm deducting 70 points for this. There were noticeable marks on the room walls and the bathroom floor, so I'm taking off another 50 points. The carpet is old and somewhat damaged, and the room looks dingy. For a room that costs over 1500 per night, this warrants another 60-point deduction. So, this is a hotel with overly distinct pros and cons.

Overall, my experience was okay, but the deposit process was a real hassle, and communication with the front desk was difficult. I tried to pay the deposit online twice, and both times it showed as 'Locked by Shangri-La Tokyo' for JPY 250,000 + JPY 100,000. The hotel responded that their finance team checked and found a system error, so they hadn't received the deposit. Finally, they sent me a new link, and I paid another JPY 100,000, which also showed as 'Locked by Shangri-La Tokyo.' This time, they claimed it was successful. Thank goodness! But even now, the deposit is still being held by the hotel. During my stay, I showed the front desk the emails I had exchanged with their reservations department, but the front desk said they hadn't received them! Even though the reservations system automatically replied to my emails, the front desk still denied receiving them! I also showed them a screenshot of the successful deposit payment, but the front desk said they needed to verify it in their system and wouldn't accept my screenshot. Fine, they said they would confirm the deposit payment in an hour, but we only found out it was received the next day. It was absolutely ridiculous! Unless absolutely necessary, I won't be going to Japan again! And even staying at a Shangri-La wasn't all that great! It was a lot of trouble, and I felt like they intentionally dragged their feet! BTW, all emails with the hotel were in English.

I come to Tokyo several times a year, staying a fortnight or more each time. This time I spent seven nights at The Capitol Hotel Tokyu. The room faced Hie Shrine. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows I could see the shrine's copper roof and half of Tokyo's skyline. The décor was modern without excess; the layout flowed easily, Bose speakers hidden in the walls, another set in the bathroom ceiling, connected by a 3.5mm jack. The curtains were motorized, though you hardly needed to close them. The turndown service. I would leave in the evening and return late to find the room changed: only the hallway light and bedside lamp left on, a bottle of water and a glass on the nightstand, two chocolates beside them. The evening tea and teacup, previously stored in the cabinet, had been moved next to the coffee machine. These changes were so slight you had to think back carefully to confirm they had happened at all. The temperature and humidity had been adjusted. As if the room itself remembered your habits. Room service fell short of the ryokan in Hakone or Lake Toya, but well above the ordinary hotel. Each day I made two or three cups of complimentary coffee, played music, read, wrote. In seven days I finished three books. The research ahead began to take shape. There were drawbacks. No washing machine, but a decent laundromat ten minutes' walk away—a chance to wander the streets of Akasaka. The room provided HDMI and ethernet ports but no cables; for those who came to rest, perhaps a mercy. The minibar fridge was mostly occupied by drinks for purchase, same as the Imperial, though there was still room for my sparkling water. The day I left it was half past five and fully dark. I could barely make out the faces of the bellhop and the taxi driver. Together they loaded my luggage into the boot. I wished the bellhop a happy new year in Japanese and told her I liked her hat. She smiled and returned the greeting. As the taxi pulled out of the underground drive, I thought of the inns Kawabata once wrote about: what had to be sought in the mountains of snow country can now be reached by elevator from the B2 exit of a metro station. I have watched the Shinagawa Prince Hotel loosen quietly over time, slip a little. That kind of decline is rarely one great error. It begins the day someone forgets to leave a glass of water, neglects to move a packet of tea, omits a newspaper. As for The Capitol Hotel Tokyu: in Japanese, what I experienced over these seven days is called ちょうどいい.

The room was quite small, basically just a place to sleep. You could open your suitcase, but it made the space feel a bit cramped. The room's amenities weren't very new. The only thing I found really practical was the spacious vanity, which was great for putting things down. However, I wouldn't say it was easy to do makeup, as the whole bathroom was quite basic, lacking a proper vanity light or mirror. Although this hotel came up as one of the top three (I think it was the first) when I searched for Shinjuku area accommodations, the closest subway station is actually Nishi-Shinjuku. It takes about a fifteen-minute walk to get to Shinjuku JR Station. There aren't many convenience stores nearby, as the hotel is located above the metropolitan government building. There were even some homeless people in the vicinity (?). The hotel staff automatically provide service in English, which made communication much smoother than in many other Japanese hotels. The guests were also predominantly Westerners. The most impressive part of the entire hotel was probably the grand lobby. Overall, the service was fine, but next time, I'd probably use a similar budget to stay at a different five-star hotel.

Mandarin Oriental once again gave me an unforgettable day. I've celebrated many birthdays at Mandarin Oriental before, and this time was no exception. The Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, was absolutely perfect. While the facilities are luxurious, they might not be considered top-tier luxury. The main perfection truly lies in the service. Michelle, the beautiful front desk staff from Indonesia, was incredibly thoughtful. On my birthday, the hotel provided several delightful surprises, further solidifying my belief that coming here to celebrate my birthday was the absolute right choice. Looking for delicious food? Mandarin Oriental offers classic French cuisine, the best pizza, and excellent sushi... And if that's not enough, downstairs you'll find the best fruits in Japan, the finest Spanish cuisine, and top-notch Chinese food. Right next to the hotel is the Mitsukoshi Main Store, so choosing a birthday gift was absolutely stress-free. The upgraded room was spacious, the internet was good, the facilities were excellent, the lighting design was well-thought-out, and the hot water in the bathroom was fantastic. Let's start with the positives: The location and facilities are excellent, the room is spacious, and I even had a view of the Imperial Palace from my window. Although it was partially obstructed, considering I booked a basic room, it was more than acceptable. Upon arrival, the staff immediately helped with my luggage and inquired about my name, which was very thoughtful. Turndown service and replenishment of amenities in the evening were prompt. All staff members throughout the hotel were professional and responsive. Now for the negatives: I wouldn't call it discrimination, but it's clear the hotel primarily caters to and prioritizes Western guests (there were many Westerners staying there). They even offer gluten-free bread at breakfast. I was assigned a room on the lowest floor, the 8th floor, and I didn't see any Western guests on my floor. When using the elevators, they were always going to floors 10 and above. Additionally, a cart with spare amenities was constantly parked right outside my room door, which was quite an eyesore every time I opened it. I brought this up during check-out, but I doubt they'll take it seriously.
