🚖 Different Types of Taxis in Japan

Japan Taxi

If it's your first time taking a taxi in Japan, you might notice that taxis come in different shapes, sizes, and service levels. Unlike some countries, Japan doesn't have a standard taxi color, so don't be surprised if you see black, white, silver, or even colorful taxis on the road.

Japan Taxi

The easiest way to identify a legitimate taxi is to look for the illuminated roof sign and a green license plate (or a black plate with yellow characters for certain commercial vehicles). If you see a regular white private car without these features, don't assume it's a taxi.

Here are the main types of taxis you'll find in Japan:

🚕 Standard Taxi

This is the most common type of taxi and the one most tourists will use. You'll find them everywhere, from airports and train stations to busy city streets. Standard taxis are comfortable, clean, and suitable for 1–4 passengers.

💡 Best for: Everyday travel, sightseeing, and short-distance trips.

🚖 JPN Taxi (Universal Design Taxi)

The JPN Taxi is Japan's newer taxi model designed to be more accessible and spacious. It features a higher roof, sliding doors, and extra luggage space, making it popular with tourists carrying large suitcases.

💡 Best for: Airport transfers, families, and travelers with luggage.

🚐 Jumbo Taxi

Traveling with a group? A Jumbo Taxi can accommodate more passengers than a standard taxi, usually up to 6–9 people depending on the vehicle.

💡 Best for: Families, friend groups, and travelers with multiple suitcases.

Premium or Luxury Taxi

Some taxi companies offer higher-end vehicles with premium services, larger seats, and experienced drivers. These are commonly found in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka.

💡 Best for: Business travelers, special occasions, and those looking for extra comfort.

Many taxi companies offer dedicated airport transfer services that can be booked in advance through an app or online. While generally more expensive than public transport, they're incredibly convenient if you're arriving with heavy luggage or landing late at night.

💡 Best for: Direct airport-to-hotel transfers and stress-free arrivals.

📲 How to Book a Taxi in Japan

Japan Taxi Guide

If you're using apps like GO Taxi, S.RIDE, Uber, or DiDi, simply follow these steps:

📲 Step

💡 What to Do

1️⃣ Open the app

Launch your preferred taxi booking app.

2️⃣ Enter your destination

Type in your hotel, attraction, restaurant, or address.

3️⃣ Confirm your pickup location

Use GPS or manually select your location.

4️⃣ Choose your taxi type

Select a standard taxi or other available options.

5️⃣ Check the estimated fare

Review the expected fare and waiting time.

6️⃣ Confirm your booking

Tap "Book" or "Request Ride".

7️⃣ Wait for your driver

Track your taxi in real time through the app.

8️⃣ Enjoy your ride

Arrive at your destination and pay via the app or your chosen payment method.

In busy areas like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, you can simply flag down a taxi from the roadside. Look at the sign displayed in the front windshield:

Hailing Japan Taxi

💡 Sign Status

❓ Meaning

🔴 Red Sign

Taxi is available for hire

❌ Blank / Other Sign

Taxi is occupied or unavailable

When you see an available taxi, raise your hand and wait for it to pull over safely.

Taxi stands are common throughout Japan and can usually be found at:

  • 🚉 Major train stations
  • ✈️ Airports
  • 🏨 Hotels
  • 🏬 Shopping malls
  • 🎡 Popular tourist attractions

Simply join the queue and wait for the next available taxi. This is often the easiest option if you're carrying luggage.

Taxi Stand

If you don't have a taxi app or are staying at a hotel, simply ask the front desk staff to arrange a taxi for you. Many hotels can:

  • ✅ Book a taxi immediately
  • ✅ Schedule a pickup for a specific time
  • ✅ Help communicate your destination to the driver

This option is especially useful for airport transfers or early-morning departures.

💰 Japan Taxi Fares Explained

One thing that surprises many first-time visitors is that taxis in Japan are generally more expensive than in many other Asian countries. However, they're also known for being incredibly clean, safe, and reliable, so you're paying for convenience and quality service. The good news is that you don't need to worry about negotiating prices. Japanese taxis use meters, and fares are regulated.

🔍 Charge Type

❓ What It Means

🚕 Initial Fare

A fixed starting fare charged when your journey begins.

📍 Distance Charge

The fare increases gradually as the taxi travels further.

⏱️ Waiting Time Charge

Additional charges apply when the taxi is stuck in traffic or waiting.

🌙 Late-Night Surcharge

Higher fares usually apply during late-night hours.

🛣️ Toll Charges

Expressway and highway tolls are added to your final fare if used.

💵 Typical Taxi Fare Examples

The exact fare varies depending on the city, traffic conditions, and route taken, but here's a rough idea of what travelers can expect:

💡 Journey

💰 Estimated Fare (RM)

Short ride within city centre (1–2 km)

RM15–RM30

10-minute city ride

RM30–RM60

20-minute city ride

RM60–RM120

Tokyo Station → Shinjuku

RM45–RM75

Kyoto Station → Gion

RM30–RM55

City Centre → Airport

RM150–RM450+

💳 How to Pay for Taxis in Japan

Tokyo Taxi Pay

💴 Cash

Cash is still one of the safest payment methods when taking a taxi in Japan. Most taxis accept Japanese yen, and drivers usually carry enough change for smaller notes.

💡 Tip: It's a good idea to keep some Japanese yen with you, especially when taking taxis in smaller cities or rural areas where cashless payment may not always be available.

💳 Credit & Debit Cards

Many taxis in major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto accept international credit cards such as:

  • ✅ Visa
  • ✅ Mastercard
  • ✅ JCB
  • ✅ American Express

Simply let the driver know you want to pay by card before completing the ride. Some older taxis may still be cash-only, so it's better not to rely on cards 100%.

📱 Mobile Payments & IC Cards

Japan has become much more cashless-friendly, and many taxis now accept:

  • ✅ Suica
  • ✅ PASMO
  • ✅ ICOCA
  • ✅ Apple Pay / Google Pay (depending on the service)
  • ✅ Other local mobile payment methods

For travelers using public transport cards like Suica or PASMO, being able to use the same card for taxis can be very convenient.

🚕 In-App Payment

If you book through taxi apps like GO Taxi, S.RIDE, Uber, or DiDi, you can usually pay directly through the app. This is one of the easiest options because:

  • ✅ You don't need to prepare cash
  • ✅ Payment is completed automatically
  • ✅ You can see the fare before or after the ride
  • ✅ No language barrier when paying

💡 Must-Know Tips Before Taking a Taxi in Japan

Japan Taxi

🚪 1. Don’t Open the Taxi Door Yourself

One of the first things that surprises many tourists is that Japanese taxi doors open automatically. When the taxi stops, simply wait for the driver to open the rear door using a remote control. After getting in, the driver will also close the door automatically.

📍 2. Prepare Your Destination Before Getting In

Not all taxi drivers in Japan speak English, especially outside major tourist areas. To make communication easier, prepare your destination in advance:

  • ✅ Show the address on Google Maps
  • ✅ Save the Japanese name of your hotel or attraction
  • ✅ Take a screenshot of your destination

💴 3. Check the Fare Before Long Rides

Japan taxis use meters, so you don't need to negotiate the price. However, longer journeys can become expensive quickly. Before taking a taxi for a long distance, especially to airports or attractions outside the city, it's a good idea to:

  • ✅ Check the estimated fare on a taxi app
  • ✅ Compare the cost with trains or buses
  • ✅ Confirm if highway tolls are included

🚕 4. Queue Properly at Taxi Stands

At busy locations like airports, train stations, and tourist attractions, taxis usually line up at designated taxi stands. Simply join the queue and wait for your turn. Avoid approaching random taxis waiting in line, as they are usually assigned in order.

🙅‍♀️ 5. No Tipping Needed

Unlike some countries, tipping is not part of Japanese taxi culture. Simply pay the exact fare shown on the meter (or the app), collect your belongings, and thank the driver with a polite "Arigatou gozaimasu" (Thank you).

The best hotel I’ve stayed so far in Tokyo. Ginza is my most favorite district in Tokyo, and knowing Ginza as a luxury place, it is surprising to be at a 4-star hotel that doesn’t break the bank. I love the location that it is near to everything that you need - train station, Don Quijote, konbini, pharmacy, malls. The cherry on top - the great view of the skyscrapers of Tokyo, especially the Tokyo tower from a distance. I like how the room is designed to have a great view of the skyscrapers as well aside from the lobby. The room was quite small, but I do understand due to the limited spaces and such in Japan. Even though the room is small, I’d still give it a 5/5 due to the overall cleanliness, view, amneties, elegance and luxurious vibe that doesn’t need to be expensive, great toilet and bath as special mention. The staffs are very helpful and attentive. Their simple greetings and smiles are more than enough to make you feel welcome and brighten up your day/night. If I would go back to Tokyo in the next couple of months, I will definitely book again on this hotel, as this is the gem I’ve found. If the management will allow, I would like to have a special mention to Sue (I’m not sure if the spelling is correct). She is very attentive to me and helped me ensure that me and my dad’s luggage are secured, and of course when it was time for me to get the luggage. She is polite and made me felt warm with the little and quick side conversation we had. Hope to see Sue again when I come back. It is nice to meet her, and hopefully may keep in touch. Thank you management team for always keeping your guests welcome and at home. -Mark

We had a wonderful family stay at Tokyo Dome Hotel. The location was perfect — right next to Tokyo Dome City with plenty of entertainment, food options, and easy access to the subway. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and offered beautiful city views. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout our stay, making check-in smooth and ensuring we had everything we needed. Our child enjoyed the nearby attractions, and it made exploring Tokyo so convenient for the whole family. Overall, a great experience and a hotel we would happily return to on our next trip to Tokyo. I was really pleased with my stay at the Prince Hotel Tower in Tokyo! The location is incredibly convenient, with easy access to transportation, making it simple to explore the city. Upon entering the lobby, I was struck by its grandeur, yet the staff were friendly and welcoming, creating a warm atmosphere. The room was spacious and clean, with a stunning view. I was on a floor that offered a glimpse of Tokyo Tower, which looked beautiful when lit up at night. Just sitting by the window felt worth the price. The bed and pillows were very comfortable, ensuring a great night's sleep. I also recommend the breakfast, which had a wide variety of options, both Japanese and Western, all served elegantly. Plus, there’s a lovely garden nearby for a morning stroll, which was quite enjoyable. This hotel is definitely one I’d want to return to. Both the facilities and the quality of service instilled a sense of security, making my experience truly delightful.

Great hotel in a quiet part of Ginza . The room is spacious and all the staff is super nice , especially the uncle outside the hotel who always greets you with the biggest smile . Staff are very friendly and always on hand to help, nothing is ever too much. The comments about it being old-fashioned, tbh it looks vintage style like the 1930s which is a cool vibe which I loved. Vintage style elevators. I'd say if you love vintage you'd love this hotel. I booked an extra night because I felt comfortable staying here.

Location: Extremely convenient—within walking distance to Ginza and both the Ginza & Asakusa subway lines. There is also a direct train from Narita Airport to the hotel, and it’s an easy walk to the airport limousine bus station in the Ginza area. Room: As typical for Tokyo hotels, the room is compact, just enough for 2 people and 2 suitcases (not side by side). Despite the size, the hotel provides everything you need—even small extras like borrowing a hair curler. Noise & Comfort: The most impressive aspect was the noise control. Even though my room was next to the elevator and facing the road, it was very quiet. Double curtains blocked outside light completely, creating a peaceful, dark environment perfect for uninterrupted sleep. The only downside was the bed, which felt a bit hard, and the pillows, which were small and not very fluffy. Service: The staff were very helpful and responded promptly to queries via direct message, which made the stay smooth and comfortable. Overall, this hotel offers excellent convenience, thoughtful amenities, and a quiet environment for rest, with only minor room comfort issues.

Good location, nearby commercial and biz buildings, Tokyo station (which is accessible to multiple JR and metro lines) and Kobayashi Station (Ginza Line). There are a number of good food outlets nearby, worth to walk around. Hotel Amenities are good except the room pillow (very grainy and hard). One pax only can select 1 pillow from their pillow selection near the reception, but not the regular “western” fluffy hotel pillow. Free drink and cocktail at lobby in the evening. Public bath available too! Coin Laundry available at 300yen and dryer is for free. They do segregate ladies and men level for public amenities. Thumbs up! But a guy came down to the ladies level to use the dryer (all the ladies were staring down at him, but he seems oblivious or pretend not to care). It was raining during the period of my stay. The reception was able to loan out umbrella! Great service! Room was small but sufficient for 1 pax. It’s Japan, I adapt. All in all, great place to stay in. Will definitely be back in the future!

This was my first time staying at The Peninsula Tokyo, and the experience was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we began corresponding with the hotel before arrival, the team made it clear that this was going to be a special stay. I had reached out in advance as this was an important trip for our family, and the team – especially Ms. Kim – went above and beyond to help organise everything smoothly. Every detail was handled with care, and it really set the tone for our visit. Throughout our stay, every interaction made us feel genuinely welcome. The lobby team, the staff at Peter, and housekeeping were all consistently warm, professional, and attentive. Small gestures, friendly smiles, and a real willingness to help turned a simple hotel stay into a collection of memories we will cherish for a long time. This trip has made The Peninsula Tokyo our new fav stay in the city. We had a fantastic experience staying at the Tokyo Bay Shiomi Prince Hotel. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly welcoming and professional. I absolutely *loved* our stay here. From the rooftop onsen, with a fabulous views across Tokyo, to the lovely little extras (like the free ice-cream after the onsen, and 10pm treats). The entrance and lobby are just beautiful, a calm oasis after the madness of Tokyo. The location is perfect - far enough away from the busiest streets to be quiet at night, but close enough to be in the thick of things. Our road had a wonderful izakaya, a fantastic ramen place, and a gem of a breakfast cafe on it, as well as the obligatory 7-elevens, and was very close to the Shinjuku Gyoen National Gardens. Our room was tiny, but we knew this making the booking - I would advise paying close attention to the room size, so that you know what you're getting when you make the booking. There are much larger rooms available, for a higher price. The difference in room size could make a big difference to your stay, if you have a lot of luggage (which we didn't). I will absolutely stay here again, next time I'm in Tokyo.

The hygiene at this hotel is impeccable. When you arrive you are not allowed to wear any shoes inside the hotel and you clean your suitcase before entering. The room is a good size, with a strong shower in the bathroom. Bed and pillow is quite hard but it didn't affect my sleep. I loved the onsen area. They have onsen, cold bath and a mineral bath as well as a sauna. It was great to use this after a day of walking. The only downside was breakfast, there is a good range and I did eat some of the food. However, I just felt like when I'd read reviews online it was praising the breakfast. For me though, I thought it was avergae. I didn't think it was worth the money. The hotel is a good location not too far from some of the metro lines and has a number of restaurants and supermarkets close by. Would definitely consider staying here again. The hotel is good value for money.

My room was spotless, comfortable, and well-equipped with modern amenities. Housekeeping maintained impeccable standards throughout my stay. The staff were exceptionally polite, friendly, and attentive, offering warm and professional service from check-in to departure. Overall, this hotel perfectly combines a prime location, comfortable accommodations, relaxing facilities, and genuine hospitality. Outstanding Stay — Exceptional Service and Perfect Location Our stay at Marunouchi Hotel was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. The level of service was consistently high, with staff who were attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming at every interaction. The room was impeccably maintained. Housekeeping was flawless — everything was spotless, well organized, and clearly cared for. Amenities were generously provided and thoughtfully topped up daily, which made our stay extremely comfortable and stress-free. The location is unbeatable. Being just steps from Tokyo Station made travel incredibly convenient, and the nearby Marunouchi tree-lined streets, beautifully lit in the evenings, created a magical atmosphere that we looked forward to every night. Marunouchi Hotel truly delivers on quality, cleanliness, and service excellence. We felt well cared for throughout our stay and would absolutely return without hesitation. Highly recommended.

Hotel has a convenient location with Otemachi station entrance in same exact building around the corner. A few 24h conbini’s are located around. We had a room facing the park with a stunning view at the sunset and Mt.Fuji. The room itself is clean and spacious, everything needed was inside, staff changed towels daily. Smoking room is around reception and is really comfy as there are 2 vending machines. The only downside - pool operating ours are ending early, which is a bit strange as walking around Tokyo usually does not end around 6-7 pm. and would be great to stretch you legs after a long walk swimming in a pool before going to sleep

The hotel's location is great, quite close to the subway station, and it's convenient to walk to Ginza. In my opinion, the one major drawback is that the staff's English proficiency is absolutely terrible! On both occasions I've stayed here, the front desk staff could barely speak English during check-in, requiring a translation device, which wasted a lot of time and effort. Even more ridiculous, when I called from my room to request an extra pillow, the staff member who answered couldn't understand English. We repeated the English word for ”pillow” at least ten times, and even spelled out the letters one by one, but it was still useless – we simply couldn't communicate. Overall, the hotel has a good location and the rooms are generally decent, but the English level of the staff is genuinely the worst I've encountered in any Japanese hotel.

The location is fantastic! It's right outside the subway exit, so you don't have to worry about getting wet if it rains. There's also a bus stop directly across the street with services to both Narita and Haneda airports, which is a huge plus. It makes getting around incredibly convenient. The hotel offers dedicated English service, which is excellent. While the facilities are a bit dated, they do have a currency exchange machine for Japanese Yen, and the breakfast is also very good.

This hotel is conveniently located right next to Tokyo Station and a luxury shopping mall, making it super easy to get around and shop. The hotel entrance and lobby are a bit small, so you really have to look for it. If your room faces the central station, you might get some noise, even on higher floors. The staff are very welcoming, and there are even some who speak Chinese, providing professional and friendly service. Both the Italian and Japanese restaurants are excellent, though you'll need reservations. The turndown service also comes with unique little snacks, which is a nice touch. This is my second time staying here, and I still think it's well worth it.

I come to Tokyo several times a year, staying a fortnight or more each time. This time I spent seven nights at The Capitol Hotel Tokyu. The room faced Hie Shrine. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows I could see the shrine's copper roof and half of Tokyo's skyline. The décor was modern without excess; the layout flowed easily, Bose speakers hidden in the walls, another set in the bathroom ceiling, connected by a 3.5mm jack. The curtains were motorized, though you hardly needed to close them. The turndown service. I would leave in the evening and return late to find the room changed: only the hallway light and bedside lamp left on, a bottle of water and a glass on the nightstand, two chocolates beside them. The evening tea and teacup, previously stored in the cabinet, had been moved next to the coffee machine. These changes were so slight you had to think back carefully to confirm they had happened at all. The temperature and humidity had been adjusted. As if the room itself remembered your habits. Room service fell short of the ryokan in Hakone or Lake Toya, but well above the ordinary hotel. Each day I made two or three cups of complimentary coffee, played music, read, wrote. In seven days I finished three books. The research ahead began to take shape. There were drawbacks. No washing machine, but a decent laundromat ten minutes' walk away—a chance to wander the streets of Akasaka. The room provided HDMI and ethernet ports but no cables; for those who came to rest, perhaps a mercy. The minibar fridge was mostly occupied by drinks for purchase, same as the Imperial, though there was still room for my sparkling water. The day I left it was half past five and fully dark. I could barely make out the faces of the bellhop and the taxi driver. Together they loaded my luggage into the boot. I wished the bellhop a happy new year in Japanese and told her I liked her hat. She smiled and returned the greeting. As the taxi pulled out of the underground drive, I thought of the inns Kawabata once wrote about: what had to be sought in the mountains of snow country can now be reached by elevator from the B2 exit of a metro station. I have watched the Shinagawa Prince Hotel loosen quietly over time, slip a little. That kind of decline is rarely one great error. It begins the day someone forgets to leave a glass of water, neglects to move a packet of tea, omits a newspaper. As for The Capitol Hotel Tokyu: in Japanese, what I experienced over these seven days is called ちょうどいい.

The room is on the smaller side, but perfectly fine for a solo traveler. Having a capsule coffee machine is a nice touch. The hotel itself is a bit dated but quite large, and it seems to be popular, even designated for airline crews. Be prepared to queue for both check-in and check-out. Booking through Trip.com was very convenient and quick. The location is excellent, with direct shuttle buses to both Haneda and Narita airports, and another shuttle to Shinjuku Station. There's a 7-Eleven on the first floor, but you have to go outside to access it, you can't get there directly from inside the hotel. It's right next to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, and I'd recommend staying here just to try their canteen for lunch sometime – it's quite an interesting experience.

Very disappointing Spa facilities for ladies. Only a warm (38 °C) marble sauna. The male facilities have a proper dry sauna and jacuzzi. Also, while visiting the Chinese restaurant, we ordered their 1/4 duck, but the rolls were only made with the Duck skin. We were told they dispose of the Duck meat. Crazy! After querying, they brought us another 1/4 duck with skin and meat, but we were charged for it. We didn't even ask for the second portion. Paid for both orders in the end. I regret booking this hotel. Not worth the high rate.

A very clean hotel with a great location — Lawson, Family Mart, 7/11, and plenty of cafés are nearby, plus the metro is within walking distance. The staff was very kind; thank you for helping me send my suitcase to Osaka. The room was nice, the bathroom was clean, and in the lobby there’s complimentary coffee, lemon water, and a few other drinks (I don’t quite remember 🫣). The only downside was the window facing a wall 🥲. I didn’t complain, but it did leave a bit of an unpleasant impression. Overall though, it’s a good hotel.

It was a good choice to stay if you need to be close to the Haneda airport. The best thing they have free shuttle to the airport (as early as 4am), so that's a great bonus (first come first served), the shuttle seats around 10ppl. 2 station from the airport line. The room was actually a nice decent size for a hotel, a seperate eating ,table area with kitchenette . No noise from the planes at all. ❓ FAQs: About Japan Taxi App🚕

  • 1. What is the best taxi app to use in Japan?

For most tourists, GO Taxi is one of the best options because it has wide coverage across Japan, supports English, and is easy to use. Other popular choices include S.RIDE, Uber Japan, and DiDi Taxi, depending on your location and travel needs.
  • 2. Can tourists use taxi apps in Japan without speaking Japanese?

Yes! Most major taxi apps in Japan are tourist-friendly and support English. You can simply enter your destination, choose your pickup location, and book a ride through the app without needing to communicate in Japanese.
  • 3. Is Uber available in Japan?

Yes, Uber is available in Japan, but it works differently from many other countries. Instead of private drivers, Uber mainly connects passengers with licensed taxi operators. It is a convenient option for travelers who already have the Uber app installed.
  • 4. Are taxis expensive in Japan?

Compared to Malaysia, taxis in Japan are generally more expensive. However, they offer excellent service, safety, and convenience. Taking a taxi is especially worth it when traveling with luggage, in a group, after the last train, or for short distances where multiple train transfers are needed.
  • 5. Do I need cash to take a taxi in Japan?

Not always. Many taxis in major cities accept credit cards, IC cards like Suica and PASMO, and in-app payments through taxi apps. However, it is still recommended to carry some Japanese yen as a backup, especially when traveling outside major cities.
