If you've only ever done KL to Penang on the ETS, China's high-speed rail will spoil you. The Beijing–Shanghai line covers 1,318km in as little as 4 hours 18 minutes at 350km/h, more than 50 times a day.

Flying takes 2.5 hours, sure. But add the ride to Daxing, check-in, security and the trip from Hongqiao into town and you're at 5–6 hours door to door anyway. The train drops you in the city centre with no baggage belt. For a two-city trip, it just wins.

Which stations you'll actually use

Nearly every fast train leaves Beijing South Railway Station (Beijingnan), on metro Lines 4 and 14. Allow 40 minutes from Wangfujing.

You'll arrive at one of two stations, and this matters:

Shanghai Hongqiao — the big one, beside Hongqiao airport, on metro Lines 2, 10 and 17. About 30–40 minutes to the Bund.
Shanghai Railway Station — smaller, more central. Staying in Jing'an or near Nanjing Road? Trains like G3, G17, G29 and G33 save you a long metro ride.

Absolutely stunning hotel The hotel staff were incredibly helpful and the decor was absolutely stunning. It really does look just like the photos. Its also easy walking distance to Wangfujing shopping street, to multiple subway lines, and to the Forbidden City. Dozens of food options right across the street too, but also several in-house restaurants and room service. Our room was spotlessly clean, the air was fresh and clean, and the housekeeping cleaned up and replaced our towels and amenities daily. The gym was very well equipped with commercial gym standard equipment - it doesnt open til 7am though. The swimming pool area was also lovely though we were too busy exploring Beijing and never got a chance to swim in it! We would both, most definitely, stay with Legendale again and would thoroughly recommend to others, too. It was an absolute pleasure to stay there. We only wish we had stayed for a bit longer.

Communication, from the front desk staff to the lobby manager and even management, is smooth and efficient, with a low communication cost. The room decor and facilities aren't new, but they are perfectly adequate for business travelers and families. The hotel is equipped with an indoor pool and gym, which is very friendly for those who like to exercise while traveling. The breakfast selection and taste are very practical, and overall, my experience was great. I hope the hotel continues to uphold its commitment to brand and quality.

Opting for the New Otani Chang Fu Gong for my Beijing trip was a great choice; the overall stay was consistently excellent and thoughtful, truly reflecting the quality of a seasoned high-end hotel. The service was warm and meticulous. Every day, they'd leave Beijing specialty snacks in the room – classic local pastries and treats. Coming back after a day of sightseeing to these delightful surprises was incredibly heartwarming. The breakfast was of a high standard, with a rich variety of choices, and a distinct Japanese flair. The tender omelets, crispy capelin, and exquisite Japanese pastries were all authentically prepared. At the same time, Chinese and Western hot dishes, breads, congees, cold cuts, and braised meats were all available, catering to different tastes. The view from the breakfast restaurant was a particular highlight. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, you could see a serene courtyard: a neatly trimmed lawn, a rock garden pond, and even white geese leisurely strolling about. The garden scenery was elegant and comfortable. Enjoying breakfast while taking in the view really helped me slow down and relax. The guest room was clean and spacious, with a well-organized layout and good natural light, making for a relaxed and unconfined stay. The overall service was on point, and the breakfast was outstanding. I highly recommend this hotel for accommodation in Beijing.

The apex of Beijing, where the true heart of luxury beats! — A perfect stay at Kerry Hotel Beijing from July 25th-26th If Beijing is a flowing feast, then the Guomao CBD is its most dazzling stage, and Kerry Hotel Beijing sits right in the center of it. During this stay, I truly experienced what it means to “be amidst the bustle, yet privately enjoy luxury.” Arriving on the afternoon of the 25th, from the moment I stepped into the lobby, that grand sense of tranquility isolated me from the noise outside the window. The room was super spacious, and the floor-to-ceiling window offered an unparalleled city skyline view, with the CCTV Headquarters (the 'big trousers') and China Zun tower side-by-side. That feeling of having the imperial capital at your feet instantly made the room rate worthwhile! I must particularly praise the Kerry Club Lounge on the 18th floor! It was truly the highlight of my entire stay! The service from Ms. Lucy, Clara, and Seanna was simply delightful, making me feel incredibly welcome. The lounge's food, whether afternoon tea or evening happy hour, offered such a vast variety that it was hard to choose. The breakfast at 'Jia Pin Restaurant' on the morning of the 26th absolutely won me over—there were 7 ways to prepare eggs alone, plus fresh grapefruit. These kinds of details are truly a huge plus! Although I know this hotel is a representative of the 'old money' opened in 1999, the facilities are incredibly well-maintained. That sense of profound grandeur, refined by the passage of time, is a quality new hotels simply cannot replicate. The gym and heated swimming pool are top-tier for hotels in China, with huge spaces and comprehensive equipment. Even just a swim feels like a luxury. My two-day journey in the heart of luxury left me wanting more. Not only is the location unbeatable, but the service and dining are also exceptional! This is definitely the most 'aristocratic' hotel I've stayed at in Beijing, second to none! ♥️

Today I'm on duty at work. It's scorching hot and there's no air conditioning in the office. It's really unbearable. I emergency chose this Xinqiao Hotel. Facilities: I chose a windowless non-smoking room. The size is decent, and the facilities are quite complete. This hotel has several Chinese and Western restaurants, so dining is quite convenient. Hygiene: The hotel's hygiene is good; it's relatively clean. I specifically chose a non-smoking room. Because it's windowless, the room is equipped with an air purifier. Environment: It's very close to my workplace, only about two or three hundred meters away. The environment is good. Service: The check-in service at this hotel was relatively quick. Room cleaning was also quite prompt, and check-out was fast. The breakfast service was also pretty good, I guess?

I chose Orange Crystal for my trip to Beijing this time, and the experience exceeded my expectations. The location is excellent, right in the heart of Wangfujing, very close to Jinshi Hutong subway station on Line 8. It's incredibly convenient for shopping and dining, and also very easy to get to attractions like Yonghe Temple and the Forbidden City. The hotel's overall decor is simple yet stylish, and the lobby environment is clean and comfortable. The guest rooms are well-cleaned, and the bedding is soft, making for a very relaxing sleep. The room is equipped with smart controls, making it easy to operate the curtains and lighting. The bathroom has a separate wet and dry area, and toiletries are complete. It's truly a quiet resting environment in the midst of a bustling city. The front desk staff were friendly and efficient with check-in. There are many great food options nearby, and returning to the hotel after sightseeing is hassle-free. It's perfect for both tourist travel and short stays. I'll definitely prioritize this hotel next time I visit Beijing.

It’s a very good hotel located in ideal location . It’s very near to forbidden city which is just few streets away. Many restaurants located nearby, like Si Ji Min Fu Peking Duck. You could get help from the hotel to get the queue number and waiting at the hotel room before your turn. It’s really save a lot of time. The daily breakfast was good , just that the serving plates or cups were found cracked or chipped , the hotel still use that for serving customers during breakfast .We were given free drink voucher and you gotta to get the voucher from the service counter daily. Free laundry and free robot delivery service . As there’s only one robot for food delivery to room, and during peak hour , you might need to go down to collect the food at the hotel counter yourself . And the room cleaning service is awesome and they helped us to clean the baggage and left us a message in sticky note when the job’s done. Kudos to the dedicated room cleaner. Many local Beijing snacks and cold drinks are served at the hotel lobby and they are free. When we’re checked out , we’re given a small free goodie bag to bring back home.

I chose this star-rated hotel for my business trip, and it absolutely delivered on luxury—the experience was fantastic. The location deserves a special mention; it's incredibly convenient for getting around. You can walk to Metro Line 1 and Line 5, making travel effortless. Just 50 meters left from the hotel entrance is a mall with so many shopping and dining options, it's hard to choose—all your retail and food cravings are easily satisfied. The room was an even bigger surprise. It was incredibly spacious, bright, and well-lit. The floor-to-ceiling window offered an amazing view; lying in bed and enjoying the scenery was pure bliss. The amenities were comprehensive, and the pillows and mattress were perfectly comfortable. I slept like a log, straight until morning—it was incredibly refreshing. The breakfast was also noteworthy, with a wide variety of both Chinese and Western options. I was very satisfied every morning. I had such a pleasant stay these past few days that I'll definitely choose this place again on my next visit.

1. **Check-in:** The check-in process was inefficient. They strictly enforce the 2 PM check-in time, and there was a very long line with only two front desk staff members. It got even slower when foreign guests were checking in. It wasn't even that crowded during the National Day holiday. 2. **Room:** The room was very spacious. We booked a mountain-view room, and since we had kids, we had to push the beds together. Due to the bed design, there was a huge gap at the headboard, so next time we'll have to request bed guards. The glass was quite old, and the buttons in the room weren't very responsive. With two children, we were missing children's toiletries, slippers, and bathrobes, which had to be sent up separately. Shower gel and other amenities were only available in specific kids' rooms. It would be better if they provided slippers for the hot spring area next time; the disposable ones were quite slippery. 3. **Hotel Activities:** During the National Day holiday, there were activities every morning and afternoon, which the kids really enjoyed. Some required an extra charge. I'd recommend registering for the activities when you actually participate to get the discount (I used up my registration slot early by using the link over Wi-Fi the day before, which used up my mobile data). 4. **Water Park:** The room indicated complimentary tickets for two adults and one child. 'Child' means under 120cm, which is already free, so the hotel giving another 'complimentary' ticket felt a bit redundant. There are three pools in total. The largest one had a suitable water temperature, but the two smaller pools were cold. There were children running and playing wildly on the slides, and I suggest staff supervise and remind them to be careful. There are many outdoor hot springs, but one bubble pool was super cold, and the bubbles were covered in dirty mud, with no one cleaning it. There was also a lack of information about the outdoor hot springs; you had to walk to each one to find out the temperature and what kind of spring it was. There was no conditioner in the showers, so I recommend bringing your own. 5. **Kids' Club:** It was quite small, and the provided socks weren't non-slip. The kids played for a bit and then got bored. 6. **Hotel Breakfast:** The wontons were nowhere to be found... but all the bread was delicious! A hot bowl of noodles chased away the autumn chill. The corn porridge was mislabeled as millet porridge. Overall, there wasn't a huge variety of dishes, for example, only two types of cold dishes and two types of fruit. 7. **Service:** Feedback was addressed and handled promptly. The service was super satisfying!

The location is incredibly convenient; after a long day of walking, being able to get back to the hotel for a rest in just a few minutes by taxi is pure bliss. The stay itself was fantastic – the room facilities were great, and the front desk and restaurant staff were all friendly and kind. The hotel also offers a free shuttle to the amusement park, which is a thoughtful touch. Another satisfying and happy trip!

The hotel boasts an elegant environment, making you feel like you have an entire mountain to yourself. Built into the hillside, the two-bedroom suite we booked this time was located mid-mountain. The hotel community has complete facilities, and the main entrance is fenced off with a gate, so the security is reassuring and makes you feel very safe. The shuttle service uses Voyah commercial vans, which are super comfortable! The staff helped with our luggage, which was very thoughtful and attentive. It's about 10 kilometers from Badaling Great Wall, and Shuiguan Great Wall is nearby and not crowded. Juyongguan Great Wall is also conveniently located on the way to Beijing South Station, so we stopped by, making our trip even more rich and fulfilling.

Pros: 1. The hotel is nestled halfway up the mountain, offering fresh air and truly beautiful surroundings. It's a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle, and the hotel's decor and maintenance are quite good. Our butler, Bella, was incredibly meticulous and thoughtful, taking care of every little detail. She met all our needs, making our stay exceptionally comfortable. 2. There's a wide array of facilities and activities, including a mountainside hot spring, indoor pool, Hatha yoga, singing bowl therapy, a gym, and a kids' club. It's perfect for families, and the kids' club is large and newly renovated – it just reopened in May. It's definitely more fun than the kids' clubs at other hotels I've visited. Plus, children aged 4 and up can be supervised for free, which made my little one super happy! 3. The room key card came with a park map, showing hiking trails. There's an easy 5-kilometer mountain boardwalk, perfect for families, where you can visit the Eight Planets viewing platforms. 4. The breakfast was impressive! They had steaks, lamb chops, and a rich variety of both Chinese and Western dishes. However, the cured meats were generally a bit too salty. Cons: 1. The first floor has a tatami mat, which makes it hard for elderly guests to get up and lie down. If they need to get up at night, they would definitely need assistance. 2. While the room is large, whether the Japanese wabi-sabi style truly suits Chinese guests, especially for a hotel charging 5,000 yuan per night, is a question that needs consideration. The wabi-sabi aesthetic often translates to very sparse furnishings: no comfortable sofas, no bedside tables, no bedside lamps, and certainly no central control panel for all lights and appliances. The tatami mat essentially means sleeping on the floor with a low table, making it very inconvenient and challenging to get up, sit down, or place and retrieve items, which clashes with Chinese living habits. 3. The private hot spring bath in the room only has one switch for hot water, making it impossible to adjust the temperature. Its size is also awkward; it's fine for one person, but feels cramped for two. For a room type designed for six people, such a small bath is quite inconvenient. Furthermore, the inner wall of the bath is made of solid wood, raising concerns about hygiene. 4. The smart toilet was broken and remained unrepaired even after reporting it. 5. The two bedrooms on the second floor, designed to accommodate at least four people, share a single small bathroom, which is a very impractical design. Additionally, the entire Gubei Water Town is not suitable for elderly visitors with mobility issues, especially those in wheelchairs. The flagstone paths are very uneven, and there are many steps, which would make a wheelchair ride extremely bumpy and uncomfortable.

I particularly want to highlight the hotel's excellent service. A very enthusiastic girl at the front desk (who shares an English name with Eason Chan) was particularly helpful. The room was clean and tidy, and the turndown service was very well done. However, the room facilities are quite dated, especially the toilet. If they can't replace the toilet, at least a small shelf for phones would be helpful. Also, the bottled water in the room comes in cans, which might look high-class, but it's very inconvenient for women with long nails – I had to use a spoon to open it every time!

There's a side entrance less than 20 meters from Dengshikou Subway Station. Dongdan, Wangfujing, and Longfu Temple are all within walking distance. You can city walk and experience the hutongs or go shopping. Famous restaurants like Dongdan Nanmen Shuanrou, Kaorou Liu, and Bianyifang are all conveniently nearby. As an old five-star hotel, the service is top-notch – attentive but not intrusive, very comfortable and proper. The breakfast has a good variety of freshly made items; the scrambled eggs, beef noodles, and waffles were all delicious. The front desk and concierge staff were all very professional and proactive, quick to respond. They truly deserve praise. The pool design is also very thoughtful, with a small hot spring pool. In the morning, when the sun shines on it, it's absolutely beautiful. The steps and stone materials around the pool blend seamlessly with the environment. The family room was originally a corner room with a portable bed added. The portable bed was a bit short and the mattress was soft. Because the hotel is older, the outlets have been retrofitted. You can also see the effort put into maintenance from the cleanliness and attention to detail. However, the facilities are indeed old; the bathroom door was hard to slide open and close, and the cabinet doors were also worn. It's precisely because of its age that we were able to stay at a hotel with this location and service for this price. Very satisfied.

The view was excellent, offering a 270-degree view from three sides, directly facing the bustling Sanlitun Taikoo Li commercial district. This is one of Beijing's most vibrant areas, with many events, such as the outdoor fashion week happening right downstairs during my stay. The hotel's location is superb, surrounded by malls, bars, and restaurants. There's a constant flow of people and traffic throughout the day and well into the night. The InterContinental Club on the 22nd floor offered morning tea and afternoon tea with fewer crowds and excellent service – even more welcoming and attentive than other hotels. The gym and swimming pool were both good and not crowded at all. The emotional value of standing by the window in the panoramic view room and enjoying the scenery was truly immense. The downside, however, is the price; I wouldn't have been able to afford it if the hotel hadn't given me a discount. Also, the electric curtains on the front and both side panoramic windows are linked, meaning that most of the time, to block out the view of the neighboring guest room from one side, the other panoramic curtain also has to be closed, which is quite frustrating. It would be better if they were manual curtains instead.

When I visited Universal Studios Beijing this time, after doing my research and comparing options, I chose NUO Hotel, and it turns out I made the right choice. Don't let the seemingly greater distance from Universal Studios Hotel deter you; it's actually just a five-minute walk across the street. The room was twice the size, the slippers were incredibly comfortable, and they provided ten small bottles of water plus one large bottle daily... I was truly impressed. I bought a package that included a two-day, one-night stay + double breakfast + 1.5-day park tickets + early park access. This was absolutely worth it. Buying the tickets separately would cost around a thousand yuan, and with early access, it would be about 1,500 yuan. Deducting the breakfast cost, the room itself was effectively only a little over a thousand yuan... and it was so comfortable that I even extended my stay for another day. The extended stay didn't come with complimentary tickets, though, and cost 2,700 yuan. If I had to point out a flaw, it would be how difficult the toiletries were to squeeze out. As someone who works in the skincare and personal care industry, I truly believe such product design shouldn't be found in a five-star hotel... What's going on? Are they trying to prevent guests from using them? The breakfast was unbeatable! I loved the smoked salmon. The restaurant offered a good variety, and the taste was excellent with high-quality fruit. Five-star rating!

At the station: how it actually goes

Arrive 45 minutes early. Security is airport-style and Beijing South gets heavy at peak hours. Then: find your waiting hall on the departure board, locate your gate, scan your passport when it opens, and walk down to your carriage. Your ticket shows the car number, and floor markers on the platform tell you where to stand. Gate staff speak enough English to help.

Food, luggage and the small stuff

Onboard food is functional at best — trolley service with rice boxes and noodles, cash or card. The QR menu on your armrest needs a Chinese mobile number, so don't count on it.

For halal food, buy before you board. Nothing on the train is certified. Stock up at Niujie or look for the 清真 sign around Beijing South, and pack enough for the whole ride.

There's no strict weight check, but the rule is 20kg and 130cm total dimensions. Overhead racks take cabin bags; big suitcases go at the carriage ends, first come first served.
