JB to SG border by train

Gambar Profil Penulis

Cross border travel between Johor and Singapore is an essential daily routine for thousands of commuters, students, and travellers. For many years, the Johor Singapore Causeway has experienced heavy congestion, especially during peak hours and public holidays. To improve connectivity and reduce traffic pressure, both governments have introduced a modern rail solution that aims to make border crossings faster and more efficient.

At present, cross border train services are operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) through the Shuttle Tebrau service between Johor Bahru Sentral and Woodlands Train Checkpoint. Once the RTS Link begins operations, which is targeted for December 2026, it will become the main rail connection between Malaysia and Singapore, replacing the existing KTM shuttle service.

How to Travel from JB to Singapore by KTM Shuttle Tebrau

Source: bus online and ticket

The Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) Shuttle Tebrau is currently the fastest train option between Johor Bahru and Singapore. Below is an updated step by step guide for Malaysian travellers.

Step 1: Book Your Ticket Online

Purchase your KTM Shuttle Tebrau ticket online through the official KTM website or mobile app.

Tickets from Johor Bahru Sentral to Woodlands Train Checkpoint cost RM 5 one way and $5 (From SG)

It is strongly recommended to book in advance because tickets sell out quickly, especially during weekends, public holidays, and peak commuting hours. Over the counter purchases are limited and often unavailable on busy days.

Step 2: Arrive at JB Sentral

Travel to JB Sentral by Grab, taxi, or local bus. If you are coming from other parts of Johor Bahru, you may take a bus from Larkin Sentral to JB Sentral.

Arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before your departure time.

Step 3: Proceed to Gate A

Inside JB Sentral, head to Gate A, which is the departure gate for the KTM Shuttle Tebrau service.

The boarding gate opens 30 minutes before departure and closes 10 minutes before the train leaves. Late passengers will not be allowed to board.

Step 4: Complete Malaysian Immigration Clearance

After passing the boarding gate, prepare your passport. Your passport acts as your boarding pass and will be scanned at the Automated Control Gate.

Proceed downstairs via the escalator for immigration clearance. You may use either:

  • Manual immigration counters
  • Automated e gates, if eligible

Step 5: Board the Train to Singapore

After clearing immigration, wait at the designated waiting area until boarding begins.

Once announced, proceed to the platform and board the train.

The train ride across the Causeway takes approximately five minutes.

Step 6: Clear Singapore Immigration

Upon arrival at Woodlands Train Checkpoint, disembark and follow the signs to the immigration hall.

Complete Singapore immigration clearance at either the manual counters or automated gates.

Step 7: Continue Your Journey in Singapore

After immigration clearance, proceed via the overhead bridge to access:

  • Bus services
  • Taxi stand
  • Connecting transport options

You may then continue to your destination within Singapore.

Stayed here after more than 15 years. Booked the grand king bed and it was enormous. Arrived at 1pm and check in was completed in 5 minutes. Fantastic amenities with cable tv. Strong very hot shower. View of the swimming pool. Bed was comfortable but the pillows were too hard. Had a stiff neck the next day. Great food all around the hotel. Overall a wonderful stay.

The hotel's location is excellent; it's right across the road from the Johor Bahru checkpoint, just through the mall. There's also Haidilao downstairs, along with various cafes and bakeries. The hotel room was spacious enough. However, the only downside, and a very disappointing one, is the extremely poor soundproofing! There's a connecting door within the room that's shoddily sealed. We could hear everything from the next room, and even see the light through the door gap. If someone with ill intent were to spread a virus or something similar, it could easily lead to terrible consequences. The hotel's Wi-Fi was also incredibly unstable, disconnecting every five minutes, which was extremely frustrating. The hotel breakfast was also very unappetizing. Please choose carefully.

Capri JB has always been my choice to stay and this is the 1st time ever, it miserably failed in terms of customer service, all thanks to Ishamudin. The check in queue was already long when we arrived. Took 20mins to be attended. When Ishamudin served us, his replies were curt, not helpful & dismissive (snatched my sister's passport right out of her hand instead of asking for it nicely) He then said only 1 room was ready as we wanted all 3 rooms to be on same floor (we booked 3 rooms btw) and it was already 4.30pm. So he said if we all are going out, then when we come back the other 2 rooms will be ready by then. I then said, it doesn't matter if the rooms are on the same floor, as long as all 3 rooms are ready now (cos we are all tired & sweaty and just wanted to rest). He then snatched my sister's passport out of her hand. Made a call, stared on the computer screen then 5 mins later, just curtly placed 2 room cards on the counter. Without explaining anything, of course I had to ask questions like ”when will the 3rd room be ready?” , ”how will you be informing us when the 3rd room is ready?”, etc I had to ask questions instead of Ishamudin explaining what's going on. Ishamudin then said he will call 1 of the rooms to notify when the 3rd room is ready. Guess what?? At 5.40pm, I had to call the reception to check and find out myself! Asked for Ishamudin & guess what? He was already out from his shift! Explained to the reception & a nice Indian gentleman (sorry didn't get his name) came up to my room (instead of collecting it down at recep) & handed the 3rd room card. Now, that was customer service! Ishamudin could have said ”Sorry, the rooms are not available right now but once ready, I will send someone up to send u the 3rd room card” etc If Ishamudin has no passion to serve, please put him somewhere else. The least he could do is smile (which he didn't at all).

The location is fantastic, especially for visiting Singapore. From the balcony, you can clearly see Singapore across the strait – literally a view of two countries! It’s super convenient. Downstairs, there's a shopping complex with a JAYA supermarket and various restaurants, including Northeastern and Henan cuisine. Getting to CIQ (Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine) is a breeze, with covered walkways all the way, protecting you from the elements and with clear signage. With the RTS (Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System) coming soon, it'll be even more convenient.

Great place for a short stay. Great location. Great service from frontdesk. Friendly. Cleanliness: the bedroom cleanliness is good. The bathroom is not very clean. The white wall tiles are filled with black moldy lines. It's clear the housekeeping didnt even bother. Housekeeping: They forget to put towels in my room. But after calling reception they promptly sent one. So that's okay. Housekeepers start cleaning rooms at around 9am and they start banging the doors which were extremely disturbing. Hope this could be improved.

The kitchen got some ants around. And also the entrance towards the place was actually a bit hard to find although with video and guides coz the place is so big. Love the pool! The room was spacious with a lovely river view and good hygiene. Breakfast was just okay. There's a bus stop right outside and a subway station about 300 meters away, making transportation very convenient. They also offer Chinese-speaking service. 1. Early check-in and late check-out are available, charged hourly, though I don't recall the exact rates. The service was polite, but they don't offer luggage delivery to your room. 2. The location is indeed excellent. It's walking distance to the police station attraction, and taxis to various places cost around S$11-15, making it great for quick sightseers. 3. Breakfast was quite mediocre, like airplane food brought to the ground, and it was very crowded. You might as well skip it and try local street food; that experience is much better. The hotel pool is glass, which is beautiful, and I highly recommend trying it out – it's a bit like the one at the St. Regis. [Soundproofing] It's pretty poor; light sleepers will hear noise from outside the door. [Musty Smell] The rooms had a significant musty odor. If this bothers you, don't book here. I'd consider it an unpleasant smell. The upside is that for Singapore, it's not expensive, just a little over a thousand (SGD/CNY), so what more can you ask for?

## Environment: The location is good, very close to the subway, making transportation convenient. There's a convenience store downstairs, so it's easy to grab a bite if you get hungry at night. We East Asians might find the smell in some areas a bit uncomfortable (mainly in the elevator; the lobby and rooms are fine. You know the drill). ## Hygiene: The room was quite clean. ## Service: Check-in involved a bit of a wait. For Singapore, it seems there are fewer staff who speak Chinese. Also, my breakfast records for two days weren't logged, so I had to explain and confirm with the staff every morning. ## Breakfast: Perhaps to cater to the needs of Indian guests, the breakfast here was truly difficult to describe... ## Facilities: The hotel facilities are quite old, but! The important thing is that the rooms are really spacious. If you're not a fan of Singapore's super small-sized rooms, I highly recommend this place. Additionally, the hotel decor might remind you of the golden nineties; it's quite retro and stylish in its own way.

For this price, don't expect too much from the cleanliness. Lower your expectations, and you might find it just about okay. Public transport and MRT stations are a guaranteed 10-minute walk away, and there's a 7-Eleven within 5 minutes. Even though it was hot and we were tired in the afternoon, the kids still had energy, so we let them go to the pool. It's small, which is good, and not too deep, so I just relaxed on a lounge chair while they had a blast all afternoon. Clarke Quay is right next door. Cleanliness is just average, and the rooms are small. Next time, if I increase my budget slightly, I'd stay at the Ascott Roberson House nearby.
