Flights from Sydney to Melbourne: The Fastest Commute

For the vast majority of travelers, flying is the ultimate no-brainer. The Sydney to Melbourne corridor is consistently ranked as one of the busiest flight routes in the entire world. Airlines like Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar operate flights every 15 to 20 minutes during peak morning and evening hours. You will depart from Sydney’s T2 or T3 Domestic terminals and arrive at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport (MEL) in roughly 90 minutes.

Keep in mind that domestic travel in Australia is incredibly efficient. You only need to arrive at the airport about 60 to 90 minutes before your scheduled departure. Qantas and Virgin Australia include checked baggage in most standard fares, whereas Jetstar operates strictly a-la-carte—so be prepared to pay extra at checkout if you are carrying more than a standard 7kg cabin bag.

If you are looking for ultra-budget fares, consider flying into Avalon Airport (AVV). Jetstar operates frequent flights here, but keep in mind that Avalon is located much closer to Geelong, requiring a 50-minute SkyBus transfer to Melbourne's city center.

Pro-Tip for Flyers: To maximize your savings, skip the expensive airport taxi queues. In Sydney, take the Airport Link train from Central Station directly to the terminal (about AUD 19 / ~MYR 54). Upon landing in Melbourne, the red SkyBus is your absolute best friend, whisking you directly to Southern Cross Station in the CBD for around AUD 24 (~MYR 68).

What is the best train from Sydney to Melbourne?

The best train from Sydney to Melbourne is the NSW TrainLink XPT, departing twice daily from Sydney Central Station to Melbourne's Southern Cross Station. The 11-hour journey offers economy, first-class seating, and overnight sleeper cabins, making it an excellent choice for scenic, relaxed travel.

Australians might prefer flying for efficiency, but the train journey between these two capitals is an incredibly underrated experience for international visitors. The NSW TrainLink XPT operates two services daily: a morning departure (around 7:40 AM) and an overnight service (around 8:42 PM). The daytime route sweeps through beautiful regional transport hubs like Goulburn, Wagga Wagga, and Albury, showcasing the vast, sun-drenched Australian countryside right outside your window.

Standard economy off-peak tickets run around AUD 99 (~MYR 283). Inside the XPT, you will find a dedicated buffet car serving hot meals, snacks, and barista-style coffee, which makes the long ride much more enjoyable. You are also allowed a generous luggage allowance—typically two bags up to 20kg each—without the hefty excess baggage fees you would encounter on a budget airline. If you choose the night train, we highly recommend upgrading to a sleeper berth for an additional AUD 88 (~MYR 252). You will get a proper bed and wake up right in the heart of Melbourne, fully refreshed and ready to explore.

Taking the Bus: The Ultimate Budget Option

If you want to stretch your travel dollars to the absolute maximum, the interstate coach is king. Operators like Greyhound Australia, Firefly Express, and FlixBus offer daily runs from Sydney’s Central Station Coach Terminal straight down to Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station.

The journey takes around 12 hours. Modern buses are equipped with strong air conditioning, onboard restrooms, USB charging ports, and free Wi-Fi, making the long-haul surprisingly tolerable. Keep in mind that long-haul buses in Australia mandate a strict luggage limit, usually mirroring airline standards (one 20kg stowed bag and a small carry-on).

The drivers will make scheduled meal stops at regional highway roadhouses, allowing you to stretch your legs, grab a hot pie, and use terminal facilities. By booking an overnight coach, you effectively combine your transport and accommodation costs into one neat package of around AUD 65–90 (~MYR 185–257).

What are the best stops on a Sydney to Melbourne road trip?

The best stops on a Sydney to Melbourne road trip via the coastal Princes Highway include the Kiama Blowhole, the pristine white sands of Jervis Bay, the oyster farms in Narooma, and the stunning wildlife trails of Wilsons Promontory National Park before reaching Melbourne.

If you have three to five days to spare, renting a car and driving is the ultimate way to experience the geographical transition from New South Wales into Victoria. While the inland Hume Highway takes just 9 hours, the coastal Princes Highway (spanning over 1,000 kilometers) is the real star of the show for tourists. Before embarking, ensure your rental vehicle is equipped with a toll pass, as navigating out of Sydney involves several toll roads. Also, be deeply mindful of dawn and dusk driving; Australian wildlife, particularly kangaroos, are highly active during these twilight hours.

Top Coastal Road Trip Stops:

  • Kiama: Just 90 minutes south of Sydney, this breezy seaside town is famous for the Kiama Blowhole, which shoots angry ocean water up to 10 meters into the air.
  • Jervis Bay: Home to Hyams Beach, officially recognized for having some of the whitest and finest sand in the world. Keep an eye out for resident bottlenose dolphins!
  • Narooma & Central Tilba: Narooma offers incredible local rock oysters and boat tours to see fur seals. A short detour takes you to Central Tilba, a beautifully preserved historic dairy village famous for its rich cheeses.
  • Wilsons Promontory: As you cross into Victoria, "The Prom" is a non-negotiable nature stop. Hike up Mount Oberon for panoramic ocean views and spot wild wombats freely roaming near Norman Beach.

The reviews mentioned the hotel was old, but I found it to be very well-maintained. The carpets were spotless, and there was no musty smell. As a family of three, the room size was more than sufficient. The location is also excellent, with a commercial district just a 5-minute walk away, which was incredibly convenient.

The overall experience leans towards a high-end boutique hotel style. The location is excellent, close to Collins Street, making it very convenient for getting around. The rooms are well-designed, modern, and tasteful, with comfortable bedding and good soundproofing. The service is professional yet unobtrusive, making it ideal for business travelers or those seeking a touch of quality.

The place is a bit dated, specially noticeable in the pool/gym amenities. However, what it lacks in newness, it makes up with excellent service. My child was celebrating her birthday and was surprised with a birthday treat during breakfast. This may be a small thing, but we appreciated it as she is anaphylactic to dairy and the staff made sure everything on her cake was dairy-free. We were also allowed to check in a bit later.

One of the not-so-great hotels I have stayed in (And I travel a lot!) - Staff is the only good thing I found in this hotel- Always smiling & willing to help, right from staff in housekeeping to reception. - Located right in the heart of Melbourne city center, but surrounded by buildings on 3 sides. Just 2 top end rooms on every floor that get a street view. All others either have a wall facing them, or a tin roof of a lower building. Felt quite claustrophobic. - Minimal amenities: No laundry service in the hotel (Only dry cleaning), no water in the room (Get it from a tap in the floor - I got locked out twice because I forgot my key in the room), not even a wire to hang/dry something in the bathroom. Definitely not meant for someone who wants basic amenities - not for business travellers for sure.

An antique-style hotel, like stepping into an old movie. The location is excellent, right across from the Parliament building. Sometimes, you can even see newlyweds taking wedding photos. The hotel is beautiful, full of British charm, and the facilities are perfect. I absolutely loved it! 💕

Our family of three stayed for one night. First, upon check-in, our room wasn't ready because cleaning was still in progress. We waited in the lounge where we were offered snacks and drinks. It took about 30 minutes, and as an apology, we received two bar vouchers. So far, so good. However, the next morning at 9:30 AM, a cleaning staff member came to our room to ask when we would be checking out. Check-out was at 11 AM, so I don't understand why they needed to come to the room to prompt us to leave. Then, 15 minutes before check-out, someone came to the room again, saying there was an apology gift (bottled beer and Coca-Cola, which were inconvenient to carry). We also received a call from reception. Our relaxing morning was completely ruined. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a peaceful stay.

My stay at Brady Hotel Central Melbourne was absolutely fantastic! The biggest highlight has to be its superb location – incredibly close to the subway entrance, making it super easy to get around. For foodies like me, it was even better: the hotel is surrounded by all sorts of restaurants and eateries. There's so much variety, and you don't even have to go far to find great food. The room itself was very comfortable, and the overall facilities and service were top-notch. It's rare to find a hotel in Melbourne with such convenient transport links and amazing food options nearby. It offers excellent value for money, and I highly recommend it!

We recently stayed at Novotel Melbourne on Little Collins, and overall had a comfortable and convenient experience. The biggest highlight is definitely the excellent location in the heart of Melbourne CBD. It’s very easy to get around, with plenty of shopping, dining, and attractions within walking distance. We arrived earlier than check-in time, and the staff kindly allowed us to store our luggage, which made things much easier. We were also offered a discounted breakfast option during check-in, which was a nice touch. The gym facilities were well-maintained, and we enjoyed using them during our stay. The room was a bit more compact compared to other hotels we stayed at during this trip, but still clean and functional. Although we had requested a higher floor, we were assigned a lower-level room, which currently faces some construction. One thing to note is that the lift system can be slightly inconvenient, as the reception is on Level 3 and requires a transfer between lifts. There were also a few instances where the lift didn’t respond as expected. Additionally, there isn’t a self-service laundry facility available. Overall, despite a few minor inconveniences, we enjoyed our stay—especially because of the prime location and helpful service.

Honestly, I found it just okay... The facilities are quite old. On the first day, my room wasn't cleaned, and when I asked the front desk for some shower gel, it took them ages to bring it. Eventually, they knocked, and when I opened the door, I saw three small bottles just lying on the floor outside. On the second day, the trash can in the bathroom had its liner separated from the bin, and there was no trash bag inside; the liner was just sitting on the toilet. What was most frustrating was encountering a double check-in... Ugh, anyway, the front desk staff really weren't very enthusiastic... Maybe it was because they saw an Asian face.

The hotel is located in the city center, with an Asian supermarket, Chinese restaurants, and cafes just down the street – extremely convenient. The facilities are on par with the hotel's price. You'll need to ask the front desk for toiletries and slippers. The staff, from the front desk to the restaurant servers and concierge, were all warm and polite. After checking in, there's a one-on-one WhatsApp service, though responses were a bit slow. The breakfast selection was decent, and the quality was acceptable. At $28, it might be better to visit a nearby cafe instead.

I booked this hotel during a Ctrip promotion, and honestly, the price was a steal at 1000/night. First, the pros: Location: It's right in the city center, first ring, free zone. You can take the tram for a free city walk. If you're on a day tour, the bus pick-up point is just a two-minute walk away. The front desk staff, Holy, and the senior gentleman from concierge were both very nice. Now, for the cons: The coffee spoon wasn't clean, it was dirty. The minibar fridge had cooling issues; the bottom was full of water. These, I could overlook. However, and seriously, as a Hyatt Globalist, I rarely stay at InterContinental, and I have never, in all my previous experiences, encountered an unlocked room door. I left my room early Friday morning for a day tour and returned at 9:30 PM to find my room door unlocked, just as pictured. I was shocked. The next day, I spoke to the duty manager, and they checked the surveillance footage, confirming that no one had entered my room. But my stay experience was truly poor. Such carelessness, forgetting to lock the guest's door after cleaning. Plus, this hotel's elevators don't require a room card swipe. At 9:30 PM, both the front desk and concierge were empty, making it easy for anyone to access any floor. I somewhat regret not spending a bit more to stay at the Grand Hyatt. Also, I heard this hotel is rebranding to Regent, oh my! InterContinental truly feels like a makeshift operation. To think they dare to rebrand to Regent like this! This hotel usually sells at the same price as the Grand Hyatt, and if it weren't for this promotion, I definitely wouldn't have chosen it. InterContinental left such a terrible impression on me; it's really hard not to come here and complain.

The location is absolutely unbeatable, right in the heart of Melbourne's city center. Stepping out, you're immediately at St. Paul's Cathedral and Federation Square, with major shopping areas and attractions all within walking distance, making getting around and shopping incredibly convenient. The hotel itself boasts a style of understated luxury. The rooms are spacious, with a high-quality decor, and the bathroom amenities are top-notch, ensuring a very comfortable stay. The service throughout was attentive and thoughtful, with professional and detailed concierge and turndown services that were promptly delivered. The breakfast spread was extensive, offering a full range of both Chinese and Western options with fresh ingredients. The only minor downsides were that the building has some age, with a few facilities showing their years, and during peak breakfast hours, it can get crowded with a slightly slower refill rate for dishes. Overall, it remains a prime choice among Melbourne's high-end hotels, perfect for both business trips and leisure stays.

Location-wise, it's right opposite the SkyBus terminal and next to Southern Cross Station. There's a Coles supermarket right by the hotel entrance, which is super convenient for grabbing snacks. While it is not located right in the heart of the city center, it is a very easy walk to the tram station, so getting around was convenient. Rooms and bathrooms didn’t seem to be cleaned much however, showers had hair in the drain the whole time, and general mess on bedroom floors not ever hoovered up in the 5 days I was there. The apartments are good but dirty. The staff smiles to guests but don’t solve problems. First, when I arrived to the hotel it was early, their check in is after 3pm. The guy at the reception offered me to complete paperwork for check in. He also said that I can go for a walk and they will contact me once the room is ready. I gave him my Australian number but I never got a call. When I came back around 3:30pm the room key was ready for me, but why couldn’t they call me as promised? Second, the room was dirty especially bath tub (see photos). It had hair and skin of previous guests there- it seems they don’t really clean it. Second, next day morning I asked for packed breakfast because I went for a tour but the lady continued asking me why I need it and whether I want to check out one day early, why?.. third, the internet password did not work, so I went to reception and asked them to fix the problem. A lady took my phone and fixed it but instead solving the password issue she just reconnected using different option but she didn’t tell it to me . When I went back to my room it appeared that I still cannot connect my laptop so I had to go to the reception again. If the hotel staff know ls about Internet problem why not to fix it for everyone? Finally, they ask guests to clean their rooms before leaving otherwise cleaning charge will be applied. This is nonsense!

I recently stayed at Citadines on Bourke Melbourne for 8 nights and overall had a good experience, which I would rate around 4 out of 5 stars. The location is excellent and the hotel offers good value for a stay in Melbourne’s CBD. The room was comfortable and well-equipped, and I appreciated that housekeeping was provided every two days rather than daily, which I was perfectly happy with. However, there were a few areas where the experience could be improved. Housekeeping was somewhat inconsistent during my stay. On several occasions, floor towels were not replaced, some areas of the room appeared to be missed during cleaning, pillow covers were not changed when expected, and not all toiletries were refilled. It was frustrating to discover there was no soap or shampoo while already in the shower, requiring a call to reception and a wait for replenishment. The shower itself could also be improved, as the hot water temperature fluctuated quite noticeably between hot and cold, making it difficult to maintain a comfortable shower. There were also a couple of minor inconveniences upon arrival. The parking, while available, costs approximately AUD $45 per day and the process of locating and accessing it was somewhat confusing on the first day. Additionally, there was no HDMI cable in the room, which meant I had to request one from reception. Housekeeping also occasionally forgot to clear the trash, which added to the inconsistency of the service. The kitchenette could also be better equipped. I found the dustbin to be quite small for an extended stay, the knives were not very sharp, and there was no chopping board provided, which made preparing meals less convenient. On a positive note, after our 8-night stay, the hotel was able to provide us with a complimentary one-hour late checkout, which was appreciated and helped end the stay on a better note. Despite these issues, the staff were generally helpful when assistance was needed, and the overall stay was pleasant. With a little more attention to housekeeping consistency, maintenance, and guest amenities, this hotel could easily provide an even better experience. Overall, I would still consider staying here again due to the great location and comfortable accommodation.

Stayed at DoubleTree by Hilton Melbourne – Flinders Street for a short city break. The location is excellent, directly opposite Flinders Street Station and within easy walking distance of Federation Square, the Yarra River, restaurants and Melbourne's laneways. The hotel itself is functional rather than impressive. It appears to be a converted office building, which means the layout is a little different from purpose-built hotels and there are no particularly memorable views despite the prime location. The room was comfortable enough, but the finishes and fixtures lacked the polished feel I've experienced at other DoubleTree properties. Business travellers looking for a more premium or contemporary fit-out may find it falls short of expectations. During our stay there was an issue with our baggage, however the staff handled the situation professionally, resolved the problem and provided complimentary drink vouchers as a goodwill gesture, which was appreciated. One disappointment was that the gym was closed during our stay, as this is a facility I normally like to use when travelling. Overall, the hotel's strongest selling point is its outstanding location. It works well as a tourist base for exploring Melbourne, but business travellers who prioritise hotel facilities, room finishes and a more modern feel may prefer some of the newer hotels in the CBD.

I was actually quite happy with my stay. The room was spacious enough, and while breakfast was the same every day, it tasted decent. The bedside lamp with wireless charging was very convenient. But, and this is a big 'but,' when I returned to the hotel the night before check-out, I discovered the little penguin plushie I bought at the zoo was missing. I asked the front desk that night, and they said they'd ask housekeeping the next morning. However, when I asked again the next day, the front desk clearly had no idea about it, so I had to explain it all over again. I asked again right before checking out... One of the front desk staff members kindly went to check my room, but of course, it wasn't there. If I could have found it in the room, why would I have even asked them? I still haven't heard anything back, and I really hope the hotel responds.

This place offers incredible value for money! The location in the CBD is super convenient, the room is spacious and comes with cooking facilities, and it gets cleaned daily. Honestly, it feels even better than a typical Airbnb, and the price is fantastic. However, if you're particular about cleanliness and facilities, be aware that serviced apartments generally don't quite match up to a standard hotel in those aspects. All in all, it's an excellent choice if value is your top priority.

I stayed here for two nights, and the Ctrip price for this hotel was significantly lower than on other platforms. For the same price, other hotels weren't as new. Comparing them, this hotel is ideal, from its location to its rooms. The hotel also has USB ports on its outlets. From a distance while walking along the river, you can easily spot the 'vibe' blue letters on the building, making it easy to find your way back. There's a path right outside the entrance that crosses the river. The Urban Rooms are located on floors below the sixth floor. If you want a view, you should opt for a River View Room on the sixth floor or higher. Just a heads-up: they don't provide toothpaste or toothbrushes, so remember to bring your own.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Being able to cook for ourselves was a huge plus, and the balcony overlooked Flagstaff Gardens. It was perfect timing, as public transport was free in April, making it super convenient to connect to V-line trains. The gym was also great! We did have a slight mishap during our stay: the cleaning staff accidentally wrapped my AirPods in the bedsheets. Luckily, with the (presumably) manager's help, we managed to find them – what an adventure! The cleanliness was actually quite good, and the shower had excellent water pressure. I'm giving it full marks, and hopefully, I can get a discount next time, haha!

The location is excellent, right across from the popular dessert spot 'Lun e'. The supermarket is very convenient for daily grocery shopping, and transportation is superb – everything is close by. We enjoyed unlimited free regional train rides, which was a huge plus. My child and I had a wonderful time here. The host is very nice, and everything else was great too.

It's a serviced apartment with basically no services. If you stay for a long time and prepare to cook your own food, you can. There are large supermarkets and Chinese supermarkets nearby. You can clean the bathroom yourself, wash the bath towels yourself, and there is a dishwasher and washing machine, which is also convenient.

The one-bedroom apartment I originally booked was upgraded to a three-bedroom apartment (actually a two-bedroom and one-studio) without any notice. The original one-bedroom was very cheap. The kitchen is a rare gas stove in an Australian hotel apartment, which is convenient for cooking. The swimming pool is small, but there is a 25 meter walkway, and there is a spa, sauna, and the night view of the Yarra River is also beautiful, which is really good value. The traffic is normal. It is close to the Southern Cross Station, but it is far from Federation Square, which means that it is not close to Chinatown and the main shopping area. It is close to the office area, which is suitable for business trips. The only pity is that its front office is beside a turntable, and there is no place to park for free around it. The only parking spaces that can be seen are also for the police. In this way, after you drive out of the garage, returning the keys is a very crazy thing. I don't know if anyone else solved it. I parked the car on the turntable, rushed in, threw the key and ran. . . . . . Too embarrassing. Check-in also has this problem, because its garage requires a key to go in. It can't be like other hotels. Stop in and then go out to check in. But if you do n’t check in, you do n’t have the key. . . .

The hotel's location is really good. It's super convenient to get to the hotel from the terminal. The room size is good for unpack & repack your stuff for the trip. Since we didn't have breakfast included in the booking. There are 2 choices for the breakfast: 1. Hotel's breakfast for 35AUD/person 2. Deli cafe. We had a sandwich & muffin there. It's quick and easy to get ready in the morning.

I've always been a big fan of Indigo hotels worldwide, and this Indigo in Melbourne didn't disappoint. The room was just as artistic as pictured, and I have to commend the front desk service – it was really warm and welcoming. My favorite was Catherine, the restaurant server; she was super nice.

The transportation is very convenient. The place to live is exactly the center of the city center. It is very convenient to go to all places. The large shopping mall is located at the corner of the hotel, which is the free tram. It is less than ten minutes walking distance from Chinatown. , The only bad place, the hotel entrance is in Hengjie, it is difficult to find the first time you stay.

The night receptionists were great, with excellent service. The location is in Zone 2, and you can catch a ride right outside the corner, though for a group, taking an Uber to the city center might be more cost-effective. The hotel's design meant that none of the bathroom doors had locks. In our first room, the bathroom door was semi-transparent with a large gap on the side, making it uncomfortable and awkward since there were four of us sharing the room. After speaking with the staff, we were moved to another room with a solid wooden bathroom door, which was much better. However, the new room's lighting was very dim, and some power outlets were loose; even their own lamp would fall out. The small cooking light in the kitchen was also broken. The towel rack in the bathroom was attached to the ceiling, but the ceiling around it was cracked and looked like it was about to fall, which felt quite dangerous. One day, I requested room cleaning and left a note asking them not to make the bed, but the staff didn't even empty the bathroom trash; instead, they left a trash bag for me to change myself.... There were only two tissues left, and they weren't refilled. When I went down to the reception, the staff said they could only make a note to refill them tomorrow, as they didn't have any immediately available. There was no phone in the room, so I had to go to the front desk myself to find staff. Each shift only had one receptionist, so usually, I'd have to wait 10-15 minutes while they dealt with other guests, which was ridiculous. It's not that the staff are bad, but they are severely understaffed! Also, because there was a kitchen but no cooking utensils, when I asked the front desk, the receptionist had to personally bring a set up... they're clearly too busy!

I paid over 1500 for 3 nights! No greeting drink, free mini bar was a can of soda water 1 can of coke. No room service! I went to reception a couple of times for basic questions & the greeting by the younger lady was non existent it was like I was a hassle!! I did not feel welcomed at all & made me steer clear of her! The lady when I checked in was really nice & the man who checked me out was absolutely lovely, stood with me until my Uber arrived he was a gentleman & wish I could have dealt with him the whole stay & the First Lady on check in! Very very disappointed value for money was non existent!!

First of all, I would like to thank the hotel's service team for their warm service, because Jetstar Airlines' unreliable delay delayed my suitcase, registered the address of the adina hotel at the airport, the hotel front desk helped to receive the airport phone and immediately informed me of the luggage delivery arrangement by email. Although I checked out early the next morning and went to other places to travel, the service team still helped me sign and store it until the third night. Because the phone communication was worried that the English expression was not clear, we were all email communication, four communication emails were promptly feedback, and the service was particularly intimate. The studio apartment we booked actually arranged a two-room apartment. The living room and dining room are very large, with a kitchen and washing machine, suitable for family travel. There is a paid parking lot in the building. In the complex parking environment in the city, it is much more convenient to park directly in the hotel. There is a supermarket downstairs, walking distance to many attractions and large shopping centers in the city, especially recommended.

We would definitely come back; the apartment itself was larger than expected and we really liked it. More cutlery would have been nice. The fact that there was a small swimming pool was also a great bonus. And we were able to park our car in the hotel's basement. The location is perfect for families because you can quickly get to the city center, yet it's still quiet and beautiful.

I think the facilities are worth the price. There were two outlets next to the bed, but one of them couldn't fit because of the width of the bed rail and the size of the plug. I paid $6 for towels when I checked in, and got $5 back when I checked out.
