Rumah tumpangan di Sepilok

I stayed at this resort for 2 nights, for the obvious reason of visiting the very close Sepilok Orangutans Rehabilitation Centre. I was a bit worried reading some of the reviews here but I had a very nice experience. The hotel is in the middle of the jungle and that is an experience itself. I had a room in the building 5 minutes walk from the main area (the less you pay, the more far you are). The food is not the best and I think it's a bit expensive for the quality. The swimming pool setting is very nice though I have skin issues and didn't use the pool (wasn't super clean). The staff is okay. They kept my bag for free at the reception with them since I had valuables and the room wasn't ready already (I arrived before check in time). They organized the transport back to the airport (it takes about 40 minutes by car, you can easily use Grab for around 19RM but leaving early in the morning I preferred to book in advance). The room is nice. A/C works (not too strong), bathroom is fine, bed and pillows a bit hard but nothing too extreme. All in all, it was an amazing experience. The hotel is walking distance to both the orangutans and the sun bear centres (literally a 5 minutes walk) and about half an hour to the Rainforest Discovery Center (beware of stray dogs not in the hotel, but in the area around it). I would suggest this place to people who don't mind basic accommodation and want to stay in the jungle. The atmosphere with the other guests was nice and relaxed. Free breakfast included with the room price (at least as I am typing this review). They can also book tours.

It is comfortable and you hear the sounds of the forest and have a green outlook from your chalet. I liked the quirky outdoor shower area but be aware that it is a bit of a walk on uneven paths from some of the chalets to the restaurant. Food is tasty & ok value at the restaurant but alcohol seemed expensive. I always found the staff friendly and they were happy to transfer our bags to our chalets. Wifi only worked at the restaurant area.

Из приятного: непосредственная близость к Центрам реабилитации орангутанов и солнечных медведей, а также к Центру изучения дождевых лесов. 5-15 минут ходьбы. Прекрасная, почти нетронутая человеком природа вокруг. Территория отеля ухоженная и приятная. Номера хорошие с просторными санузлами. Есть кондиционер, который вполне сносно работает. Из плохого: невкусная однообразная еда ( альтернативы нет, мы в джунглях) завтраки съедобные, но не более, плохо обученный персонал в кафе, еле теплая вода в душе по утрам (голову помыть не решилась), отсутствие в номере щеток, расчесок, фена и т.д. Однако, все это простительно, объяснимо, и я бы не стала бы об этом писать, если бы не «вишенка на торте»: просто отвратительные подушки. Кусок высокого плотного поролона, от которого через минуту затекает шея. Уснуть на такой - задача не из простых. Условиями джунглей это издевательство над посетителями объяснить сложно.

This is the sort of place where the staff will always greet you with ”hello, sir/ma'am” whenever they see you. Nice swimming pool and very good food at the restaurant, even though slightly pricy at first (I guess it's fine being a resort), the portions are actually huge and very fresh. Try their lemon chicken on rice for 20 ringgit (February 2024). All you can eat breakfast included for free even with the dorm bed: fried noodles, a very thick pancake, fruit, British breakfast, beef sausages, coffee, juice, etc. Walk-in price is 80RM, cheaper here on Trip. The dorm looks exactly the same as the one I staid in Kinabatangan, which is always funny (same contractor?). Comfortable night, with a new AC and fan, specially so considering I had it all to myself since the other few guests they had had private accommodation. Dorm showers have plenty of hot water and are clean, but there's no soap or amenities beyond the towel they give you at check-in. Bring your own. The staff at the restaurant sometimes disappears for no reason in the middle of service, even if there's about 20 of them considering réception is right there. They helped me book a taxi to the airport (50 ringgit), since there's no grab available (spent 1h looking for one). Don't bother trying to get one, ask them to call a taxi for you, really. This resort is about 1km away from the three main things to do at sepilok. You will be walking on the side of the road to get anywhere since transportation options are scarce and expensive. Overall this is standard of service here in Borneo, so don't settle for less than this.
